    Grilled Sustainable Salmon
    Justin C.

Urban Plates is a casual order at the counter restaurant serving fresh high quality proteins, vegetables, and carbs. This location of Urban Plates is located in the popular Del Mar shopping plaza. We ordered: - Grilled Sustainable salmon with roasted carrots and potatoes - Grilled skirt steak with roasted Brussels sprouts and macaroni and cheese and a side skewer garlic shrimp protein Food is consistently fresh and delicious. You can taste the fresh quality with each bite. My steak was a little overcooked but still tender and my garlic shrimp sauce was a bit coagulated. I really like that they offer grilled butter bread as well it's an underrated part of the meal. Prices are on the higher side for the portion of food you get. The two dishes cost us around $55 out the door. That being said, this a great spot for nutritious delicious food that will keep you on track with your daily macro goals! Will definitely be back.

Just reviewing their cakes. Did you know you can get their wonderful hummingbird cake to go? It has pineapple, nuts, and raisins, plus a wonderful cream cheese frosting. It's different from carrot cake, almost an alternative. Just absolutely delicious and flavorful. Great staff and loved how it was decorated.

URBAN PLATES @ DEL MAR HIGHLANDS Parking is available right out front, and there's plenty of it since Urban Plates is located in the Del Mar Highlands plaza. The area has tons of restaurants, shops, and even a movie theater, so it's a really convenient spot overall. My boyfriend and I decided to stop by for dinner. The restaurant is definitely on the casual side. It's one of those places where you walk in, order at the counter, grab a number, and sit wherever you'd like. The staff then brings the food to your table. It's simple and easy, especially if you're looking for something quick. Price-wise, it's a bit on the higher end for what it is. Most plates range from about $18-$25, and our total came out to around $45. My boyfriend ordered the steak plate, which came with two sides, a beet salad and vegetables. I got the grilled onion cheeseburger with fries, and we also added a side of mac & cheese because it looked really good. The steak was definitely the highlight. It was cooked perfectly, super tender, soft, and full of flavor. That said, I do wish the portion size was a little bigger. The burger itself tasted good too, but they didn't ask how I wanted it cooked, so it came out more medium/overcooked than I would've preferred. Again, decent flavor, just smaller than expected. The mac & cheese was honestly the biggest letdown. I even asked if they could bake it a little extra, but it came out pretty standard. It didn't have much flavor and felt pretty basic, I hate to say it, but I've had better mac & cheese from Chick-fil-A. Overall, the quality was decent, but I wasn't super full after eating, which was disappointing considering the price. It's a solid casual, grab-and-go type of spot, but it didn't wow me enough to make me want to come back.

Bought the Turkey Family Feast this year. It's fantastic! Ordered online a few weeks before and chose a time slot. They were very organized and on time during pick up. Awesome service! Directions to reheat is easy to follow. Turkey was moist, soft and delicious. Kids love the Mac and cheese. It fed our family of 10 and we still had leftovers. We will definitely do this again. Very convenient and tasty!

Another great meal featuring fast preparation, balanced meals, versatile menu, and lots of kid-friendly options! *We got the surf and turf plate and the grilled chicken plate. Everything was delicious. I'd like to highlight that the chicken was juicy and perfectly seasoned for my tastes (light seasoning). Everyone agreed that they enjoyed the chicken more than the steak (opportunity for improvement) *The mac n cheese was decadent and I totally dip the chicken and the (less glazed bits of) broccoli in. *The sesame glaze on the broccoli could stand on it's own as well! Absolutely amazing. *The mash potatoes were extra creamy, and the shrimp were delicious as well. *toasted bread with olive oil- wonderful. Our friends also came with us, with their two kids. *Their kids had loved the mediterranean chicken bowl-- specifically the rice and the pita bread, and side of garlic french fries. *The dragonfruit refresher- I watched their toddler chug it at the end of the meal. (Side note, they also have a pretty good kids menu for those who want to get their kid their own plate.) The parents were pretty happy their kids could eat here. Seating was plentiful (today is saturday nigjt), with some large booths. Service was speedy, so we hungry people never have to wait too long. This is the second time I have brought guests here and loved it, as there's always a personalized plate for everyone! I am a huge fan!

Grown-up "cafeteria" in the Del Mar Highlands Shopping Plaza with food made from scratch and industrial decor. No trailblazing here in the menu, just basic good eats. The assembly-style service line moves fast, but I still prefer to come at off-peak hours to avoid potential lunch crowds!

Urban plates is the family go to spot for a healthy (salads) or unhealthy meal (fried chicken and fries) like they have many options and I would say their dessert variety is tasty. My son always opts for the unhealthy and for many kids the home made Mac and cheese is their favorite. This is located in a high traffic spot near sky deck Del Mar and one paseo but it's never too crowded even on the weekends. I've gone to the University City one and that's my go to spot for meetings. It's priced what you expect for the area and I've been contemplating their "plate pass" for some time but just haven't gotten around to it because I'm not frequent in urban plates that much. I feel the variety and choice give this place its stars and I know they pride themselves on organic and fresh which is good--I can see it but most of the time my kids just go for the tenders and fries. Not fully 5 stars because the food presentation and taste is still needing a bit extra but I still rate it high.

Stopped by yesterday on our way to a movie. We placed our order at 6:44PM, and the food took about 20 mins. Slightly longer than normal, but the issue was they didn't bring everything. They said the missing fries would be out in a few minutes. We ate our entire meal and the fries never arrived. In addition to them being included with the meal, I even paid the extra $2 to upgrade to truffle parm fries. I didn't want to waste anymore time so we left. I had already tipped at checkout too, so no way to really adjust your tip based on service. We ate at urban plates in Carlsbad on Saturday and normally go to that one. Guess this location is a dud.

I've been to other locations and loved urban plates! However this time around we ended up in the Del Mar location. The food, we ordered the blackened salmon with broccoli and mashed potatoes as well as the chimichurri steak with rice. The blackened salmon was extremely salty, the broccoli was flavorless and the mashed potatoes were good but too buttery. While the ambiance was chill and relaxed, the food left a lot to be desired.

First time trying this place. We got delivery on Thursday night. My friend orders food here often. I ordered the grilled salmon, sesame broccolini and turmeric basmati rice. She got the braised beef with potatoes. Food arrived in 20 minutes and was hot. The portions were big but I ate every last bite. Menu seemed to be on the healthier side. Lots of variety to choose from.

The building where this eatery can be found was in the middle of the complex and not visible from the roadside. That made it difficult for anyone not working in one of the adjacent offices to find this place. If you were not from on-site like me, then it's best to pull into the below ground parking structure at the 11220 El Camino Real address and then exit on the surface level to follow the sidewalk signs to reach The Kitchen. The operating hours were limited between 10 am to 3 pm on weekdays. I would have thought they would be open early to serve breakfast hours and maybe that is in the future plans. There were large tables outside for al fresco dining while the inside seating was modern and spacious. It resembled what you would find in the lobby of an upscale, boutique hotel. I read the seating capacity was up to 200 diners. Four menu boards hung above one of the service stations where the cashier was situated. Salads, bowls, and sandwiches were the main categories. A make-your-own bowl or wrap bar was also available for custom made creations. From the Chef's Choice Bowls, my selection was the Soba Salmon Noodles. Three small pieces of soy sesame glazed salmon were accompanied by buckwheat soba, cabbage, cucumber, carrot, edamame, and green onion. If you look at the photo of my order, then you will notice the meager serving as the amount of food did not even fill half of the bowl. That was disappointing for a price of $15. The taste of the mix was fine as the soy flavor was prominent. Between the portion size and the challenging location, I limited my rating of The Kitchen at Torrey View to three stars.

The place was empty but alot of to go orders being prepped. A guy helped me and I asked for all kale for my base. The portion seemed small so I asked him for more base kale and he gave me side eye. Keep in mind this is for their BASE (not toppings or premium toppings) - just the base (you'll see portion at end). I subbed tomato for cabbage and then he added the small scoops of parm and cheese crisps. Then tossed with Cesar dressing (it didn't look familiar this time around). The portion was so small that he even looked at it when ringing it up and I was waiting for him to say 'you want me to add more base' but instead shrugged and said 'it's b/c you omitted chicken'. Thanks guy. I could only shake my head when I opened the container. It wasn't even half full. And for $11. I could have gone to Jimbos for a bigger portion at their self serve salad. Or gone to Urbane Cafe (my fave place right now) for ahi kale salad for $13.95. The salad tasted bitter today (like radicchio for some reason) and the dressing didn't taste like their familiar Cesar. The setup is pretty casual, you order at the counter and then find your own table. We grabbed a nice corner booth with which worked out great for our group and all the kids. We ordered the calamari, parmesan garlic fries, and the cornmeal battered fish. Our friends got the quinoa bowl with cod and the garlic shrimp rice plate. The standout for me was definitely the cornmeal battered fish. It was fresh, juicy, and cooked really well. The fries that came with it were just okay, but the coleslaw was surprisingly one of my favorites I've had. The Parmesan garlic fries were interesting, there was too much garlic and the garlic was way too spicy and overpowering. It was inexpensive, which probably explains why there seemed to be more batter than actual calamari. The texture was also inconsistent, some pieces were so chewy that we could barely bite through them. But I'd honestly come back just for that fish and slaw combo. The calamari was a little disappointing. My biggest and only issue was the wait for our food. Our friends got their meals pretty quickly, but ours never came out. My husband checked twice, and both times we were told it was coming soon. Meanwhile, two tables that came in after us got their food, and one even finished and left before ours arrived. Our friends were deliberately eating slowly so we could all eat together, but they still ended up finishing before our food showed up which sucked since they had to wait for us later. Despite that, I thought the food was good overall. Hopefully the delay was just an off day because the fish was definitely worth ordering and eating again!
