It's nice to have "nice things " on the Eastside. That said, the total experience falls between a remodeled fast food place and Panera or Corner Bakery. The latter two have similar food, better amenities, and similar prices. In fairness, I didn't try the cookies (and I was asked if I wanted to order one.) I see that others have raved about them. My chicken banh mi sandwich wasn't bad, but I'm sure neither the local Vietnamese restaurants nor Sequoia Sandwich are worrying. For starters, wrong bread. An authentic version calls for a crusty baguette. The sauce is too sweet, too American. I still recommend this spot when you're on Mt. Vernon and want something better than fast food read more

I was very disappointed. I had a short lunch and I ordered a salad online for pickup. I picked up my order in a hurry, failing to realize they gave me the wrong order. They gave me a sandwich and to make matters worse the sandwich had onions which I hate. I literally had no time to even go back or call due to my short lunch. Horrible experience. This is a surprisingly great lunch spot on the east side. The atmosphere is clean and trendy with great music, and the service is excellent. I've seen this chain in LA, but hadn't tried it before. There is no gluten-free bread option, but they do lettuce wraps on request. The sandwiches include chicken, turkey, steak, and vegetarian, and they use fresh baked focaccia. They also have about 8 salad options and a couple of soups. Additionally, they have a kids menu and a creative soda fountain, including Snozberry, black passion tea, and a few types on lemonade. The food is fresh and really good. I spoke with the GM, and he said they have plans to expand into the DT or west side of Bakersfield as well. better than Panera. Yup. Better! The food has not yet disappointed nor I think it will. The bread there is so soft and made fresh. The cookies you will need to get more than one. The salads are so refreshing and filling. The sandwiches are soooo good and filling as well. You might not even finish it for they come with a small salad on the side that you will want to pick at while you enjoy those two piece of bread with an amazing filling inside. Kids eat free weekends so that's a +. Customer service is whatever, I mean you're not at a Chick-fil-A restaurant. The food does come out fairly quick. I had the cilantro chicken torta, my husband had the southwest , wasn't bad wasn't great. They have their own soft drinks, their chocolate chip cookies were good. Once I seen a snap from my cousin, I knew I had to try this place! This is your basic sandwich shop but so much more! Once I arrived they had an assembly line of staff making the dishes right in front of you. Their oven-baked bread is made fresh on a daily basis and served about 30 minutes once out of the oven. I chose the cilantro chicken torta but it did have the same focaccia bread (bread was amazing). Each sandwich comes with a small salad on the side. The sandwich had a surprising amount of flavor and came with a side of salsa, which added more flavor with a kick! I tried the watermelon and mango lemonade, both were delicious! I also had a double chocolate cookie. I am definitely going a returning customer even though I live about 20 minutes away. read more

Food is always great! They had a new soup the chicken w poblano peppers. I asked the young lady taking my order if I could try it because I didn't want to get something that I didn't like. She rudely said we dnt do that. My husband talked me into trying it anyway. It was very good but the soup was cold. My husband noticed the same young woman was then on her phone while the other lady was in the back doing dishes. My husband was just appalled that this young lady just kept getting on her phone. the lady who made our food did great and she brought it out to us which was super nice! Giving this location two stars because of the other times I've visited; it's usually been pleasant. I don't know what was going on today, but If I was doing a secret shop, y'all would've failed. Around 6:22 pm 1/29/2022, There were no customers in the store and no music was playing, so idk how the employees didn't know I was in the store. Oh yeah, probably because they were having a real good conversation. The young lady was at least utilizing company time, but the young man was just leaning on the counter, sipping his drink keekeeing. Lol anyways I wasn't helped, nor greeted. The employees were at the end of the kitchen, near the soda machines. When I was standing at the counter, I leaned to the left, so someone could see me. The young man looked at me, and continued his conversation with his co worker, so I left. I understand everyone is short staffed, and they probably didn't see me at first. But he looked directly at me, and I still wasn't greeted or helped. No big deal, but this is how your company is being represented, and it's not a good look. The bread . You can never go wrong with a soft airy bread for a sandwhich. I got the rosemary chicken. The sauce was delicious I just wish they slathered it more everywhere since the chicken was dry. However, this is a sandwhich place. Cannot expect to have juicy chicken. The mango lemonade was my favorite. The perfect drink for somebody who loves a bitter sweet drink. New place on Mt Vernon in the Smart & Final parking lot. A couple things: Newly opened restaurant on the Eastside which I love, because bringing business to our area is always good! The food was really good, very fresh, lots a selections, organized staff, and very clean. Love the creative drink options and the cookies are to die for! That being said, the parking is tricky (although new construction is in progress), & the prices are OUTRAGEOUS (like $16.59 for one person)! I literally ordered the protein salad with tri-tip, a cookie, and a drink. I would have given five stars, but I'm not sure I can afford to eat here! read more

I've only been here once so far and I was pretty impressed. I came after the lunch rush so thankfully it wasn't packed. I love the decor inside and the employees were really nice. I ordered the Santa Maria BBQ chicken sandwich and it was delicious. The bread was so soft and the portions were perfect. For the drink I got a watermelon mint lemonade and it was so refreshing, which was perfect for a hot day in Bakersfield. I definitely plan to go again and try something else. Came with a green pesto type dressing that was mildly sweet. I was surprised when i picked the bowl up as I thought it was bigger. That photo they have on the menu makes it look bigger. Bowl wasn't that deep but enough for one person. Very neatly presented with ingredients all layered in a clean organized almost like Korean style bowl. Flavor: very good. You think you're eating a salad but that chicken was very moist and tender. I had to add some salt to the bowl. Just a little salt made a world of difference like it brought it to life. Really fresh ingredients. Best damn thing I've had in a while. It comes with a slice of bread which u can't go wrong with. The grains are big plump grains that remind u of lentils. Idk if they're lentils or barely or what but they're really really good. I want to say there seemed like a pico de gayo type thing at the bottom that popped with flavor. I've been to many Urbane Cafe's and this is a decent location. I walked in with a party of five on a very slow Saturday afternoon. The cashier appeared overwelmed because we ordered a lot of food but she handled our transaction well. Some of the sandwiches we ordered were the Ahi Tuna, Tuscan and Gourmet Grilled Cheese along with chocolate chip cookies. The focaccia bread tasted excellent, as usual. The sandwich fillings, side salads and chocolate chip cookies were fresh and flavorful. And the mango lemonade was refreshing. We ate in the outdoor patio and noticed that many of the surrounding tables were unclean. In the one hour that we were there no employees cleaned any of the surrounding tables. read more

Our 1st time at an Urbane Cafe & likely our last time for a while, surely our last at this location. We walked in, it was fairly empty & silent. No greetings from the guy working the front. Not a word until, whom I assume was the manager, came to the front & met us at the register but then left after explaining the menu. We picked our seats, most needed to be wiped down which was very unpleasant because of how empty & slow the restaurant was. My husband came back from picking up our food & said it was very awkward. Not a word from the same guy that took our order. We even witnessed how he called a pager for another customer's order then left to the restroom. The customer went to pick up his order but was very confused as to why no one was on the other end. Food was good. Love the focaccia. Thanks for the entertainment? We enjoyed watching the 10 other people that eventually walked in after us look confused when picking up their order. Oh & they weren't greeted either when they walked in WHICH made me wonder if thats just the culture here, cos we're not from the area. But then we went to Smart & Final across the parking lot for some kombucha. I was greeted as I walked in. The cashier not only greeted me & smiled but even initiated a conversation. So yea..
