Urbane Café is my go-to meal for lunch or dinner or whenever I want to eat something healthy & relatively affordable. Sure, the salads are $10 but they are so worth it. Plus, I rarely get to finish one meal in one seating so I end up with two meals for the price of one. If you can, you should get their half and half cookie. It is the best of both worlds - 1/2 chocolate chip and 1/2 chocolate fudge with white chocolate chip. Best of all, their salads come with a side of their delicious intoxicatingly fresh baked bread. I was doing a little Christmas shopping at the mall and I decided to get some food before I went home. I searched for "healthy food" on yelp and this location popped up. I know it's new and to be honest El Cajon does need a lot more healthy options other than over priced and over hyped Panera.. When I came in, it was very quiet and small. It was raining outside so probably not to many people out and about. While I was looking at the menu a fit and happy man swung up to the register with a big smile and asked if I was ready to order. I told him I needed a few minutes to look over the menu and he smiled wide and responded with, "Not a problem, we are slow right now." and almost danced away. I don't know what had me thinking he was a fancy salsa dancer, but that's how I read him. He seemed hyper and happy and I wanted whatever he had for lunch. I ordered the Santa Maria BBQ chicken salad. The salad read; roasted BBQ chicken, chop salad slaw mix, Applewood-smoked bacon, crumbled goat cheese, corn & black bean salsa, grape tomatoes, blackberry BBQ sauce drizzle, with chipotle ranch dressing. I was given a beeper although there was only one other couple inside the restaurant and they had already gotten there food..strange. When I went to go find the water I was confused. Than I realized water was it's own option with the other craft sodas. Although I had a beeper they still called out my name right after my beeper started buzzing. The salsa man smiled as he placed the salad at the desk and pointed to a hole where other beepers were. I slide the beeper in the hole, grabbed my salad and returned to my booth. The salad looked phenomenal and even better, tasted phenomenal as well. My eyes rolled to the back of my head with the first bite. Glad the other couple had left. Didn't want them seeing my feisty facial reactions or hear my suttle, yet creepy, moans of enjoyment. There is an area where you can set your plates down next to the trash. When I was leaving someone from the kitchen wearing a hairnet said "Thank you." as I existed out the door. I read on my receipt that the salsa mans name is Gio. Gio was extremely friendly and kind. We find the food always to be well prepared and taste great. The employees are always pleasant and helpful. We prefer water to drink while eating. We like the set up where they have cups available and single out water fountain. And the cookies are great. read more

I Stopped by today here, to my surprise, the cashier was incredibly patience, knowledgeable and fast at taking the order of the 6 people ahead of me. The food was wonderful, I had the tomato soup and salad, yummy! And the chicken pesto sandwich and was absolutely fantastic. The order arrived to my table perfectly aby a gentleman who addressed me by name, with a smile on his face offering all kinds of additional napkins, straw, utensils needed. While all the employees that we encountered were nice, I'll suggest to the ownership to hand the keys over to Caitlyn (spelling?) and let her run the place. Both her attention to detail and the food were top-notch! My chicken salad was just right in so many ways. Just right in portion size, just right in flavor intensity, just right in price. My wife was equally as impressed with her ahi sandwich and as the fat kids we are, we also ordered a kids pizza (add bacon) to keep us true to form. Oh, remember Caitlyn? She's the one who suggested the bacon addition and then while eating our pizza she strolled up to the table, tossed us a side of chipotle ranch, and said "dip your pizza in that." Calling beforehand with my order. My wife and I decided to go on the lighter side for lunch. With a day full of activities, we wanted something filling without feeling weighed down. We wisely chose Urbane Cafe. With a nice variety of salads and sandwiches. There was something we each could order that we could enjoy. Having different tastes. That was a good thing. I actually ordered too much food getting the chicken banh mi sandwich and the ahi salad. Should of ordered just one because the banh mi actually came with it's own salad. My wife ordered the cafe salad with chicken. Calling ahead of time was the perfect call. As soon as we walked in. Our order was there waiting for us. No waiting at all. The salads themselves were fantastic- fresh, light, flavorful but not overly seasoned. The chicken banh mi sandwich and the ahi salad were delicious. Loved both but couldn't finish both. Not sure which one I would order over the other. Both were real good. A good problem to have. Overall a good lunch. Felt good after without feeling like I needed to take a nap. A perfect place to go on a lunch break if your working. Service is fast but definitely call ahead of time. Support local business especially if they are good. While you waited in line, the gracious staff and management made sure you were happy. Cookies came down the lines. You had the opportunity to get a meal which included a drink. We enjoyed a BBQ Santa Maria with tortilla soup, BBQ Tri-tip with salad and a seasonal Salmon salad. Everything was fresh and delicious! The biggest surprise was noticing how happy the customers were too. Plenty of courtesy abound! Love it! One sweet treat was meeting the Original UC, Tom! We joked about where the locally-sourced cranberry bogs might be. But it was good. We opted for fruit instead of the included salad. And then we risked our lives in the hideous parking lot, where Tom Dooley drives in circles forever looking for a spot. At one end of the small lot is an In 'n Out. What idiot thought this could work? Followup: As the owner commented, they do have cookies. Of course, the no cocktails remark was joking. We returned on another day and had another good sandwich. However, being somewhat new to El Cajon, I missed the left turn off Fletcher. Whatever you do, do not do that. It took me forever to get back. Apparently the genius who did the parking lot also designed the local road network. So up a star for the restaurant, but to get to five you will need to relocate. read more

But it was just too much The tables weren't cleaned so had to get a little creative and wipe down so we could eat. I liked though that they use real plates so there's not so much waste on disposables going into the trash. Now on to what matters most. The food. I had their soup of the day which was a dumpling soup, it was good size and pretty yummy. I had a seasonal sandwich off the menu with salmon, didn't have much of a description but it's kinda like a bah min with salmon. It was definitely good I will add but not amazingly good. For the hype this place has gotten I guess I had my hopes up. Good place but the menu is limited. The location is great off the 67 so easy to access and plenty of parking. Fresh, healthy food at reasonable prices. This place has a variety of sandwiches, salads, and soups. They have fresh lemonade and craft beverages. The staff and service are exceptional. Everyone is friendly and even though the sandwiches and salads are made to order, they are fast. This will definitely be one of my go-tos for lunch. The location is right across from Parkway Plaza so getting out of the parking lot requires right turn only but I would definitely make the u-turn for this place. I order from here all the time because it has the best salads! I religiously eat and think of their ahi tuna salad with their Japanese style dressing. It's so fresh and filling. Their focaccia bread is amazing as well as their cookies. You really can't go wrong with anything here. I've been satisfied every time for at least 5 times now. However, I knocked off a star because I called to let them know of my food allergy and if they could do me a favor and not pack it, maybe add more of something else instead. They weren't able to accommodate and I heard over the phone "no we already closed the container." I really didn't like hearing that and thought it was something simple enough to make a new one of if it has already been made. Excellent fresh sandwiches which are made to order and also comes with a side salad. I ordered the So Cal sandwich which is roasted chicken, pepper jack cheese, and avocado. The bread was so soft and warm and each bite had chicken. I can't wait to come here again! Shoot I might be back again this weekend! read more
