As a sandwich connoisseur I feel I'm pretty judgmental with sandwiches... Without the right bread the sandwich can never be great. I dropped by here based on previous reviews for a quick bite during jury duty (chose this place over Panera, which I also like), and was pleasantly surprised. Ordered the pesto chicken and dried tomato sandwich and loved it. Bread was fresh, lightly browned on the inside, sauces were amazing, chicken was slightly over done but for a rush hour lunch I couldn't have done it any better. Highly recommended. To top it off, the guy who took my order (the line was at least 10-12 people out the door), saw me eating about 20min later, came over, addressed me by name (gave my name when I placed the order), and asked how my food was. First off let me say the food is DELICIOUS. I love the sandwiches and the salads!! I have been eating from Urbane Cafe when they were still called Urban cafe. The one issue I have is some of the employees .... about 50% of the time they are very nice and great but then other times the cashiers are utterly rude i mean rude enough that I do not want to eat there or have someone else pick up my food because they make me feel so uncomfortable. They act as if they're doing me a favor and annoyed with my order changes. I guess you can't have great food and great service 100% of the time. read more

I love Urbane. I visit this spot when I work in the area. Every sandwich or salad I have had always been very savory and fresh. At my last visit, I had the turkey club. Had my first Urbane Cafe lunch this week and WOW! I am a fan. The sandwich ingredients are fresh and the dressing was clean, simple and delicious. Urbane Cafe Breakdown: -The Food: The food is pretty good. Not outstanding, but makes a quick and simple lunch. -The Value: It's relatively inexpensive. About $8-10/person -The Experience: The service was okay. BUT the bathroom at this location was disgusting!!! It reeked and was clearly not cleaned very often. It smelled like a fast food joint bathroom off of a well-traveled freeway. You know the ones I'm talking about! That one fast food place EVERYBODY stops at traveling from NorCal to SoCal or vice versa. That "one bathroom" which smells sooooo terrible? Anyway, I'd like to say that the value and food are reasons for me to come back, but It's been months since my first time there, and I still have not managed to get myself to go there since discovering the state of their restroom. We were looking for something yummy for lunch and after reading the reviews on Yelp we decided to give Urbane a try. It was sort of tough to find and the parking lot was packed, but the meal and atmosphere totally made up for it! While it was lunch time, we didn't encounter the line out the door that was mentioned in a few other reviews, but they were definitely busy. The menu has lots of yummy and healthy options. I went with the special of the day- Fiesta sandwich and my boyfriend had the So Cal sandwich. We were pleasantly surprised that our sandwiches came with a large side salad with Mandarin oranges and goat cheese. If you aren't super hungry a sandwich could easily be split and shared. The fountain soda was a little syrupy, so I opted for the iced tea which was a delicious passion fruit flavor. We will be back next time we are in town. I really want this chain to do awesome + blow up, so that there's Urbane Cafes everywhere (at least all over Southern California). Seriously: Best. Sandwiches. Ever. I'm from Ventura but live down in Orange County now, and every time I go visit I try to cram in Nature's Grill, Snapper Jack's Taco Shack, + this place. There is nothing that is not fabulous about the menu, from their ambiance to their menu to their passion iced tea. All the sandwiches come with a little field greens salad, so it's a complete meal. During the lunch hours this place is PACKED with a line out the door and no available seating: that alone should tell you how yummy it is. I try to avoid the busy hours and go in the late afternoon so that I can get a seat inside and enjoy my Californian Sandwich :) read more

Pros, Cons, then Summary Went here with my family for a fundraiser recently. PROs--It's a clean establishment. The workers there were very friendly, and the guy who took our order was very funny and respectful. The location is nice too, in a nice plaza and right off the freeway for easy access. CONs--The food was merely mediocre. I did not like my sandwich at all, and I don't care for the bread they use. The Santa Maria BBQ sandwich I got was small, and not very filling. The tiny salad in the container was pretty useless as well because it was just too small. For the price, I expect more. For the record, my wife liked her sandwich, but this is my review and she may write her own. Have better types of sandwiches, different types of meat, maybe a large cheese steak sandwich or something. Took about 25 minutes to get our order!! WTF? Nonsense, these are sandwiches and it doesn't take that long to make them. Would I go back? No, I'll take my business to a place that has better food, and larger portions. I've been coming to Urbane cafe for years now. I thought it was about time to post my review! This is a great go-to spot for me and a great place to go if you're a vegetarian as they have several vegetarian friendly sandwiches and salads to choose from. The Californian sandwich is always so delicious and the Seasonal quinoa and corn salad w/cilantro vinaigrette is perhaps the tastiest salad I have ever found! I have yet to find something similar in taste to the cilantro vinaigrette they serve, but haven't found it yet, it's soooo good! I've never been disappointed by urbane cafe, the food is consistently good and even if a mistake was made on an order, they are quick to fix it (this has only happened once and I've been going to this spot for years!) Yum! I was driving back from Santa Barbara and wanted a quick healthy option. This was definitely the right choice. It's located in a shopping center and you order at the counter and could sit at the tables inside or on the patio. Both sandwiches and salads were great. They cut the sandwich in 1/2 so you could save it for later if you choose. I would definitely go back when I'm in the area. Too bad there isn't one closer to me. read more

So I work with over 200 employees close to this location and most of us go out to pick up food and bring it back to our office. Today, Sunday, a coworker and I went over to get a bit and wanted to eat there because they only have one size drinks (smaller cup) and that way we could get a refill since we are eating on their patio ( a lot of my workers won't go there because of that. ) by the time there done with their food they're still thirsty and if you get it to go, they don't offer a bigger size to accommodate to go customers. Any way. I mention that every time I go there but anyway, TODAY, Sunday 6/21/20 around 2;30 we went and got our food and I asked for some ranch dressing to put on my side salad and she said oh that's 25cents. (Maybe this the new normal) but I was like of fine and I was looking into my picket for a measly 25cents and didn't have it so I was looking into my wallet for a dollar and she said, I have to go back around to the front and pay with a credit card and I was at the back patio door already, on a lunch break and it seamed ridiculous that I would have to stop, go out my food on a table, and walk back around to the front of the store go wait in line to pay the 25 cents to get some ranch dressing meanwhile my sandwich is getting cold and taking up time. I like the food and the people seem to be nice but seriously for less than 5 cents worth of ranch dressing they couldn't just say, "Here you go enjoy" At this point I was irritated I just said F it. I'll eat it as is (not what I wanted) and ate the salad with the dressing that I didn't want! Maybe times are tougher than I thought ? No empathy and I didn't get what I ordered then to ask for 25 cents???? I'm done. I will shout this to everyone at work and think it's petty crappy to not get what you want then ask me to go around stand in line to try to correct my order then pay 25 cents more! Uh. No thank you.! Was down in Ventura on our way to LA and stopped to catch a youth basketball tournament. At break we decided to try Urbane Cafe, in a shopping center 2-miles southwest of Ventura College. The young girls ate at a Mexican restaurant we had never heard of. The adults tried Urbane's salads. I asked if the Ahi was large cuts or slices? It was cut in chunks, was fresh and came with a choice of dressings. Prior to this I had only had their sandwiches in San Luis Obispo. Sometimes you have to try new places. I'm glad we did. DELICIOUS. Chicken protein salad with balsamic is packed with mushrooms, corn, black beans, pecans, garbanzo beans, mozzarella cheese, tons of chicken, and basil! And their freshly baked bread is chewy carb goodness. Southwest chicken sandwich is also very good with similar toppings, chicken melted with avo, corn, mozzarella, and black beans. Chicken and corn chowder complimented nicely as well. Are we noticing a theme? Was meeting two friends for (lower-cost) lunch and wasn't sure where to go but I knew this had a lot of vegetarian options so...and we were all really happy! Sandwiches are about $7 which I don't think is cheap-cheap but it comes with a big side salad and mine was full of a lot of good chicken (I had the rosemary chicken). My friends were really happy, too. They had the special - a really big salad with lots of tasty toppings that didn't run out in a way-more lettuce to topping ratio (I hate when that happens:). I'm definitely going to come back. I might try a different bread than the focaccia which is what it came with - but, that's because I really like bread and this wasn't that thick (but then again - that's probably better on keeping calorie count down). I might try one of their salads because my friends' were big and they loved them. I saw someone wrote about too much Balsamic vinegar. Saw the great yelp reviews on this place, so we decided to order dinner for pickup. I called ahead, and finally found the place (no signs on the road, hidden in a fancy shopping strip mall). GIANT line, literally out the door. So I go around to the back, and am told that I must wait in the line to pickup my sandwiches! Other people waiting glare at me. I'm clearly from out of town. I waited in the line, which did more quickly - I was out of there in 10 minutes which was amazing. We got into the food and were amazed. Excellent quality, excellent bread, amazing salad. 3.5 STARS, really. This is a solid food option. I found the prices to be super friendly to the fact that we are in a complete global financial meltdown. I grabbed the Gourmet Grilled Cheese sandwich, was on a pillowy mound of mild focaccia bread - different array of cheese, including the pungent gorgonzola... a type of green tomatillo salsa and then the nice calming taste of avocado slush, all mixed in together. It was a solid sandwich, that sat next to a little splash of salad. Baby spring mix of lettuce, goat cheese crumbles, and mandarin oranges... Also grabbed the namesake salad, large plate of super fresh greens sprinkled with feta cheese, walnuts, a few hidden pieces of avocado, really clean thin slices of white meat chicken - and some tangy balsamic on the side. I happen to love their rendition of balsamic, it is so over the top that it burns my throat a little - in a good way. 2 really good size dishes for $14 bucks... One little tip to the ownership. What a pleasant surprise. I expected just another so-so strip-mall spot where the food was decent, but nothing to write home about. Sandwich options are fresh, creative, and come with a better-than-expected side salad including mandarins and feta. They also have salads, which I've never attempted. The bread was different.. in a really good way... a cross somewhere between a pita and focaccia, and not too hefty. I like it. Mixed greens instead of iceburg. Moist chicken. Varied styles of sandwiches from bbq to to chipotle to pesto to California style. I found the perfect little place... Homeade bread, fresh salads, yummy sandwiches.. Oh my. I want one in Slo. THis place was quick, tastey, friendly and clean!!! The food is trendy which I love. The decor is alluring. It is reasonably priced and could possibly be addicting. Whoever thought of this little chain is brilliant. The only thing I would say is they need one up in Paso or San luis obispo area. We are desperate for this kind of food and enviornment! Can't wait to go back to Ventura. read more

My favorite is the bbq tri tip sandwich. The bread is always fresh. The salad that comes with it is perfect.. the balsamic dressing it comes with is my favorite. This review is about 3 weeks late as life's been a little hectic but I wanted to make sure I submitted this! I always have a great experience at this location. About 3 weeks ago I was blown away by customer service. My order was wrong and I had driven all the way home and didn't realize until I got home. I have an allergy so I drove it back and the worker named Alicia was AMAZING. She listened to my whole story and then ended up crediting me back the price for my meal and then also gave me a free meal for next time. She apologized for what happened and made me feel so taken care of. I wasn't expecting anything but the sandwich to be remade and the customer service exceeded my expectations. The Santa Fe chicken sandwich was just OK. The chicken was bland, certainly not Cajun. There was a little evidence of corn and black bean salsa that had apparently slid off of the sandwich and ended up on the prep table. The single slice of avocado was black around the edges. There was no chipotle aioli. Fortunately, my wife's salad came with some sort of chipotle dressing, which I applied to my sandwich with pretty good results. This was a two star sandwich but maybe on a different night with a different person working, it would have been good. Doesn't matter, though, I'm not interested in finding out if they can do better.
