My favorite breakfast and lunch spot in Ventura! At this point, I think I've tried everything on the menu! I've even gotten to the point of creating my own little custom breakfast by combining different side dishes! All the fruit is fresh, the salads and sandwiches are big enough to share, and the coffee is good enough to get one to go for an afternoon pick me up (they close at 2pm). I love the high quality ingredients they use, from the eggs to the produce, nothing is industriel or pre-made. Very kitchy, laid back, modern, farmer stand style café with indoor/outdoor seating. Kid and pet friendly. Big Ranch breakfast is very popular. Everyone at my table ordered it and claimed the potatoes were amazing. I had the milk toast. It was average. I felt it was all overpriced. They had a difficult time keeping the one canister of ice water full compared to the number of staff on the floor. This is the most joyous place - I'm in love!! It's located in a business park. Street parking is easy. We checked in with the hostess and had a 15 minute wait. Once your seat is ready, you order at the counter and you get a number. The staff that took our order was awesome. Friendly, warm, high energy, and efficient. Our order came out in about 10-15 min. Water is self serve. Drip coffee- perfect and high quality. It tasted like Kona coffee! Lavender matcha- great and well balanced Japanese milk bread- this fell a tad short for me. I would've liked both sides to be seasoned/flavored. Japanese Milk bread is typically moist and fluffy , however this was a little dry likely due to the toasting of the bread. The color overall was lighter than expected. It's served with a berry sauce which is really yummy. Side of smashed potatoes- really good. Perfectly seasoned and ketchup tasted homemade Aussie meat pie- soooooo delicious! The crust was awesome and the meat was tender. We also loved the side salad because it had a little zing of lemon. A rare moment where a side salad is actually fantastic! Miso chicken katsu Sando- really loved this! The chicken breast is huge. As other reviews stated, it's not a typical chicken katsu. If you like honey, you'll like this. The honey sauce hits you on the front end and ends with a little acidity from the aioli and slaw. The sandwich was super juicy and flavorful. While large, it didn't feel heavy. Each bite got better and better. Brontë bowl - OUR FAVORITE!!!! Ok first off, I hate mushrooms with a passion, but I kept them in the order because they are curried and I knew theyre an essential part of the dish. They were awesome. I didn't mind them one bit. This dish does not need salmon, and if anything I think adding it would've been too salty. I naturally eat fast but this bowl makes you slow down because of the layers/elements. The sweetness of onions, the creaminess of the feta and avocado, the crunch from the seeds, the delicious pesto, the buttered bread, the perfectly poached eggs - UGH! So perfect! Everything had a purpose. I am obsessed with this bowl. It is so much more filling than you'd think. I could eat this everyday and I hope they never change it. Ambiance was great. We sat at the bar which felt spacious. The inside is gorgeous and just puts you in a good mood. The best thing about this place is the staff. We stopped here on a Sunday morning. Street parking available and there was a parking spot on the side with various businesses. Given that it was a Sunday, most of those businesses were closed, so we parked there. The wait was 15-20mins for a table. We couldn't order until the table was available though. Which makes sense. The place is on the smaller side but they have vast sitting spaces. Indoor and outdoor. You can bring pets to the outdoor section. Restroom is outside and the space is not very handicapped friendly. The food was amazing! They had some freshly baked desserts! My friend is German and she said their cake was pretty delicious and similar to German style without frosting and very natural like. I had their avocado toast with smoked salmon. Their Salmon is from Santa Barbara Smoke house, they use Atlantic wild Salmon. I usually prefer Pacific but.. this was pretty delicious! Totally recommend it. I also had their matcha lavender latte with almond milk. The cup was pretty but due to the marine layer and cold morning, the matcha got cold so fast. I asked the girl to kindly reheat it for me (I assumed there was a microwave un there) but she proceeded to say "we can't warm it up" and so I told her ok then take it away because it didn't taste good cold. She offered to remake it and put it in a to-go cup. I was pleased with it. I recommend you use a to-go cup if you will seat outside or ask for it extra-hot if its rather chilly out and you like to enjoy your coffee with mini sips rather than chugging it. My son and I stopped at this open and delightful cafe where you order up front and then choose your table. For me being Celiac, I really liked the fact they had gluten free bread so I ordered the SMASHED AVOCADO TOAST with pickled vegelables, herbs, nut & seed dukkah GF, with smoked salmon. What drew me to this cafe was the multitude of positive reviews and the appealing atmosphere. It's an adorable west coast cafe with a photo-worthy aesthetic. But after my 3rd visit to frontside, I'm pretty confident this is on my skip-it list of coffee shops in Ventura. All 3 times I've come here, I waited a minimum of 20 minutes for my coffee. Regardless of the busyness level. I have yet to have a positive interaction with any of the employees. All drinks come in one size (I truly don't think it is even a 16 ounce) and the price for a small cold brew is ridiculous. Mind as well obtain some magic powder or something to make the unreasonable priced small brew worth it. I asked for half sweet coffee the last two times I've been here because of how sweet the first one was. Neither time was the request respected. 3rd time I finally asked for a new drink w just no flavor. That one took forever to come out. I also ate here once with my fiancé and for two coffees and one Aussie breakfast our total was $48 dollars not including tip. I truly pray that was a mistake and people aren't actually willing to pay that. read more

Had this place bookmarked for ages and it did not disappoint! Went back in Memorial Day weekend and didn't wait too long to be seated. This is a pay up front type of eatery. The service was good despite how busy it was. Even with a waitlist, street parking was fairly easy to find. The restaurant feels breezy thanks to its partially open structure. The interior looks aesthetically pleasing too. Their honey latte was very good, even better than one I got later in the day at a coffee shop. I didn't expect the brekkie roll to be filling but it was. Everything tasted great and the breeze coming from the beach made it even better. I finally made it to frontside cafe! This beautiful beachy brunch restaurant has been on my list for a long while now. I love everything about this place, the decor, the layout, the menu and the friendly staff. My friend and I wandered in for lunch and I'm happy that this spot is so popular. Definitely a busy loved local spot so plan ahead. We were lucky to get the only left corner table during a busy brunch/lunch rush. You order at the counter and then find yourself a seat. Service was friendly and all good vibes. The gal at the register was sweet and helpful as we asked questions about the menu. We also appreciated that even though we were paying separately she would put our order on the same number system to ensure our meals came out as close together as they could (which they did and that was wonderful). Even though this restaurant is only counter service even when they brought our food out to us they were nice, we had great service for a casual spot. I love their menu here. Simple but classic fun items. I also am dying to give their spritz a try next time. Appreciate the variety of their spritz cocktail options. Pricing is reasonable and again, really just love the vibe inside. My friend had the Katsu fried chicken sandwich which they loved. I was impressed with how generous the chicken portion was that I will definitely get that next time. I had an amazing granola bowl here. Love that they mix up their granola bowl with different seasonal fruits and toppings. My bowl had blackberries plus delicious yogurt, chia pudding and almond butter. A 10/10 breakfast dish and nice to find something I loved that was on the healthier side. Skip the peach iced tea though, just didn't taste like anything other than a plain iced tea. Their food is so fresh, savory, delicious and doesn't make you feel gross or weighed down like a traditional American breakfast spot does. The Yogurt Bowl is my go to, homemade granola, fruit medley with mint, honey Greek style yogurt. YUM. When I'm feeling more savory the "Full Brekki" plate is the move. Eggs your way, thick slices of sourdough, we get the sausage patties, grilled tomato and homemade jams and ketchup?! Say less. They have an awesome selection of pastries and a top tier coffee program - you honestly can't go wrong. Service is so sweet and have always been more than accommodating for me and my toddler! The food was genuinely good, and that's what makes this experience difficult to rate. The dishes were well-prepared, flavorful, and arrived promptly. What left me uncomfortable was the service. Throughout the meal, I felt singled out and dismissed in ways that were hard to ignore. I can't speak to anyone's intentions, but the overall experience left me feeling unwelcome despite the surface-level friendliness. I came away wondering whether bias played a role in how I was treated. What stood out most was the contrast between how we were treated and how some others were treated. From where we were seated, I observed other customers receiving noticeably warmer service, including more smiles, friendlier conversation, and a more welcoming attitude. First off, you have to give your name to a host to wait to get a table, but then after that you order at the counter. The food took FOREVER and all we ordered was a yogurt parfait and a meat pie (which I imagine just had to be heated up), but it wasn't even just that the food was slow. The drinks (drip coffee and a chai latte) took forever too. I get that they were busy, but it seemed unreasonably slow - took 45 minutes from ordering to get our food with a QSR model. The food was good - the yogurt parfait was very tasty although the portion of yogurt is pretty minimal, there's more berries/granola/almond butter than yogurt really. One person's meal was forgotten, so we had to check in with the kitchen. They eventually brought it out. The bathrooms were also pretty gross, which was disappointing. There was a hostess taking names, but there was no thought given to how people were given tables - many people were waiting with dogs for one of the few outdoor tables (plenty of indoor seating options), but they would seat people without outdoor needs at the outdoor tables. There were also some open tables left empty simply because there were no chairs for them. We ordered drinks as we waited and got our lattes within about 20 minutes, but our regular drip coffee never showed up. When I finally asked, they spent a few minutes trying to figure out what happened only to find out they "finished" the order without serving half the drinks. Drip coffee was decent, but the lattes tasted watered down and were lacking flavor. Food was average. Everything tasted good, but nothing was spectacular to come back for. Would come back here if someone I was going with really wanted to go as the food was still decent. Otherwise, based on the poor service and organization skills, no desire to return at this time. read more

Frontside Cafe is an absolute must for brunch! I was planning on eating somewhere else and stumbled upon this restaurant. I'm so glad I stopped here to eat! Upon entering the aesthetic of the restaurant is very calming and has a clean feel from the decor and plants. You have to order first and then find a table. We ordered the Aussie meat pie, miso chicken sandwich, and smashed potatoes. Everything was 10/10! I loved the short rib in the meat pie. It was super tender and the crust was nice and crispy. The chicken sandwich was amazing with a nice thick piece of fried chicken. Loved the balance of the chicken and slaw. Would totally order this again. I arrived right when it opened and was immediately able to place my order. You order at the counter and then take a number and find the seats. Our food came out quickly, and the server was friendly. The Brontë bowl was so delicious. I definitely could've eaten half the portion as it was large enough, however, it was so good I ended up eating the whole thing. I did add the smoked salmon although it wasn't necessary because the bowl itself is so tasty, however, I love smoked salmon so I really enjoyed that addition. Ok, first off yes, it's expensive. Not your typical continental breakfast variety, but oh it's good!! I had the bronte bowl with salmon and hubby had the brekkie roll. He wasn't a fan of the chutney, but I was. My bowl was great! I felt like i hit all the healthy food groups in one! We also shared the lavender matcha latte. Delicious, but drink fast because it got cold quick. However, we were outside so likely why it got cold faster. But it was a beautiful day. We also had the Japanese bread. It was good, but I don't have much to compare it to. The hostess was kind and welcoming. Inside was clean and organized. I liked the fact that you order, pay then sit. Joel is a fine dining chef who KNOWS how to beautifully prepare each plate with exceptional ability and knowledge. Freshest local ingredients, clean eating at its best as well as indulgent treats that you might be craving. Joel's food is the most creative, consistent and delicious in town! The supportive staff is always excellent, something not easy to find, or hire, in today's economy.
