I don't get all the hype about urbn. They have quite a few locations and I've heard great things about them but I really wasn't impressed with the pizza. I will say I'm more of a pan or deep dish fan but this crust was too thin and crunchy and barely any toppings. Honestly I'd rather have Domino's or Pizza Hut vs urbn. And if those chains aren't your thing, there are plenty of other local pizza joints that are better in my humble opinion. read more

Note to Blue Ribbon across the street from URBN: When you close at 9pm on a Sunday and URBN is open until 10pm, I go to URBN at 9:10pm for a pizza fix. Had the Peppered Salami. The first thing that hit me was the sauce, which is always a good thing for me, as a lot of pizzas don't give the sauce much thought. This pizza was absolutely terrific. Chewy dough with toppings that had a kick. Not crazy about square cut on a Neapolitan style pizza, but I was able to deal with that. See the problem is squares don't fold properly as traditional cut does. Squares squirt out the ingredients... Anyway, delicious, flavorful pizza. The pizza is so good at URBN but I hate that the Encinitas location switched to the counter ordering model without table service. It's so half-assed for the prices. When I spend $80 on a pizza, a salad and two sodas and a beer, I (at least) expect a server to drop off some plates! I could tell other customers were confused too, like were they going to get plates or what? We go out to eat to relax. Have decent service. The counter service only model should only be for cheap to-go places without a bar, but every hipster place in North County is doing it because management is lazy and cheap with their employees and customers. Here are the top 5 reasons ordering at the counter at sit down restaurant sucks: 1. You have to go to the counter and pay EVERY TIME you want another drink. 2. You can't keep an open ticket. So much for upselling or ordering more. 3. Staff is cheated out of bigger tips because customers do all the work. I'm also not tipping after every drink I buy at the counter. The staff doesn't get tipped extra for effort because they have no opportunity to build a rapport with a table. 4. I love this spot! Super cute and small little location. They have great and creative pizza and you can make your own. My boyfriend and I got pizzas to go. He got the mashed potato one, I got the vegan with soyrizo. I tried to get him to do one half pizza, but he wanted his own. Good news is, you can do half pizzas! This isn't a review for URBN so much as it is about the delivery. I had a choice between Postmates and Slice... I don't have Postmates, so I used slice. I ordered 2 pizzas with a bunch of toppings. An hour and 45 min later I heard a truck out front and looked out the window just as it drove away. When I went out to see if it was the pizza it was sitting outside the gate. No call. No text. It was so fresh, clean, vibrant and flavorful. I was surprised. Main: Gluten free small "fresh clam" add sausage. White pie with oregano, Evoo, parm. The crust was cooked perfectly. The clams and sausage were flavorful and again extremely fresh tasting. First of all, urbn and basic have some of the greatest pizza in San Diego, and this location is terrific. The pizza is coal fired, thin crust, fresh, homemade toppings. The crust is a perfection of a great crunch but not too crispy. My husband likes a traditional pizza with sausage and pepperoni. He can eat this pizza 5 nights a week. The salads are very generous and filling. I've enjoyed the chopped Italian as a meal, or order one and share it with a group from 2-4 as an appetizer. They also have gluten free pizza. My favorite is the "mashed potato" pizza with a side of ranch. Might sound strange but it's worth trying, you won't regret it. I give zero stars to the city of Encinitas and five stars URBN...last time we were there they had to close their windows due to city regulations with the windows being open while having an open kitchen. What Happened ??? YUCK This was our favorite pizza, place, great salad, urban salads great pizza, but recently went and the experience was not good. We were not greeted when we came in!! and we were not acknowledged when we left!! Bad customer service, then we asked the guy to clean off the table. He seemed very annoyed. He came with a dirty rag and wipe the table and left glasses, forks, napkins, and a bunch of grease still on the table . The waitress was carrying the plates under her arm and proceeded to throw the paper plates down on the table. the pizza was very greasy And the salads that we usually loved, the recipe must've changed the salad dressing was very watery. I guess no one filled up the stations because there was hardly any blue cheese or nuts on the salads but there was too many pears as I looked around well I seen very dirty cooking station greasy dirty utensils, stuff on the floor, food, napkins, dirt and over flowing garbage can looked bad so I wonder what was behind the door?? My favorite was the mashed potato pizza but the chicken pesto and eggplant parm were second. Didn't really care for the meatball which is usually my fave. Meatballs were skimpy and dry. Some complaints. It was hot in there on a not so hot night. They had one fan going but could use some more. Or get a seat closer to the Windows. Only their own brand of beer on draft. Thin crust pizza spot, been here a few times and each time it didn't disappoint. I wouldn't say it's the best pizza out there, but it's solid. I usually get the peppered salame pizza which has peppered salame and pepperoncinis on it which is a nice combo. The large size is easy to grind on and it's easily gone with 2 people as long as you are both normal eaters. It's such a thin crust it's just easy to keep throwing them down. I wish they'd mix up the beer selection more often, but I guess it's ok since I don't come here every week, but still more rotation would be good. Coal Fired pizza is quite unique and pretty tough to find, but I am sure glad they have it here in hometown Encinitas! To be sure, Pizza is hugely subjective: but this is the one regular spot that I often go to... especially just after a Swami's ocean session. Normally, thin crust pizza isn't my thing. I'm a lover of Pizza Port's hearty, thick crust. However, URBN Pizza was so delicate and thin... and I wasn't mad about it at all! The pizza is best eaten with a fork, and comes served on a metal baking sheet. I had the BBQ pizza, which surprised me! It's not normally something I would go for, but it's delicious! My friend and I split it, and left with only three pieces left over. I felt that it was expensive for the two of us and would be better for a family dinner. Owners and managers as well as servers, have to understand customers go out to eat for the experience--and for good food too. Although the food was really good, the service was terrible. We waited about and hour to get our food. Why? Well good question and you would think our server would of at least told us that the kitchen was slammed with "togo" orders. Or maybe even tell us that they were out of lettuce for our salad and if it was ok to sub spinach. I mean they did tell us, but that was like 45 minutes after we ordered. That is not acceptable. I asked who was in charge and the 2 servers pointed to the the guy making dough. I told them that the food was very good but service was terrible. He said it wasn't the servers fault but he was slammed with to-go orders. Well guess what? Customers don't really care. You need to get more guys in the kitchen and figure it out. And it is the servers faults cuz they didn't communicate with us the situation and the one server was just dragging her feet like she didn't really care. At first I was hesitant to support a place that uses a coal oven, because... coal. A friend recommended I try the place and so I set my prejudices aside, and using the offered online service placed a pick up order. When I arrived, I found the place not crowded, and sat down at the bar, choosing instead to dine in. The bartender and cook was a really good dude, and asked why I used the online ordering (which I thing on Yelp is offered through Eat24 or GrubHub) anyway, he said for pick up orders it's cheaper to not use the services. I explained there was no other way to order online! So we decided in the future I will just call. The food -- Thinking a small pie described as 12" would be enough for me for several days, I ordered one with kalamata, fresh basil, and maybe one other item. What was placed in front of me was in my opinion wonderfully huge. The crust had that well done and slightly tough texture I adore, and the toppings were super fresh and dee-lish. Highly recommend. The coal -- I walked around the building looking for flumes of thick black waste and found none, and although I am still not a proponent of the use of coal, I also could not find evidence of any adverse effect from cooking pizza this way.
