This place used to be of the better ones, its gone down hill. Staff are always rushing people to get out. Long lines not enough products, bad attitudes. 15 mins before closing they are more focus, on getting people out, telling people that rushing they started turning off lights 15 mins before closing, people that were walking in 10 mins before closing were told they were about to close in 3 mins. 1 cashier running because they had already close the registers and honestly, what the are they doing here..... stored locked the door at least 7 mins before it was supposed. read more

I have been meaning to come here for quite some time in search of syrups for my coffee at a better price. I love the Torani brand but at $10 a bottle at places like World Market, I needed see if there was an alternative place to buy and I hit the coffee syrup jackpot! The store is open to the public so no membership or anything like that is needed. They have SO MANY flavors that I didn't even know existed and a huge selection of the sugar free versions as well. Each bottle is priced at $6.69 so I was basically about to get 2 for the price I pay for just one elsewhere. There's also so much more avaliable from cleaning supplies to produce and yes tons of restaurant supply things that you can use in everyday life like containers for meal prepping or leftovers storage and everything is very well priced. read more

I had a few visits here, and while I wasn't impressed, I also wasn't really disappointed because I got what I needed. The staff is laid-back and a little distant, but they will definitely help you if you ask. Not much else to say. It fulfills a need, has the essentials, and is centrally located, albeit in an inconvenient plaza with ongoing construction. It's not the place to go to for quality items, killer deals, or a steal -- for that, you'd best go to the real restaurant supply stores in the East Side or Milpitas. But if you have a last minute dinner part and need a giant bag of onions, a decent Winco hotel pan, or a large stock pot and can't wait for Amazon Prime delivery, this is where you go. read more

I went in to look for some coffee syrup, and let me tell you--I found everything I was looking for! Great customer service!

Remember when this place actually used to be good? You used to walk in and be warmly greeted, and the prices were fair and the workers actually knew what they were doing? Not anymore. Now you walk in and get stared at, no one greets you, and the store just feels cold and unwelcoming. They have hired new staff and it's clear the store was desperate because these poor souls are so overwhelmed. I watched 2 people get double charged, and the cashier had the audacity to argue back with them until the assistant manager stepped in and corrected him. All in all, definitely will not be stopping in here again. read more

This is a pretty cool market. Really more for restaurants than for individual cooking but with that said you could absolutely buy some things for home. They've got a meat section with tons of meat you could bring home and cook yourself. Even some of the huge bag/can/jars of whatever food they sell, some of it you could buy for your own kitchen. Dealing with inconsiderate disrespectful rude behavior is not worth the few pennies discount you get from this store. And the old saying every penny counts is bull. Especially when the pennies don't add up to no more than a couple of dollars. It's not worth the aggravation or my time. In my opinion, the same attitude over the phone is the same attitude in person. I contacted these people for the price of one of their meat products. First he wanted to know Is that the only question you have. It's not the question he asked but the way in which he asked as if I was wasting his time. This store might not seem like your go-to place, but trust me, it's worth a visit. They have so much more than just big quantities for businesses. They have awesome deals on small things too. I come here mainly for syrup for my kid's snow cones, but I've also gotten fruit, bread, and even meat from here. I think the quality is better than Smart and Final for most stuff. This isn't a regular grocery store, but you should definitely check it out and see what you can get and how much you can save here. And the best part is, no lines, no crowds like Costco. read more

Love this place, The dairy and meat are always top notch. I buy the beef tenderloin and cut up my own filets mignon. Pity about the manager though. During my most recent visit, he triggered the pulsed LASER security system which made me forget how to pay my bill. I just handed over random cash and hoped it was enough. OK this place is great if you know what to expect. Do NOT expect high end luxury foodstuffs or equipment. If you instead want affordably priced wholesale quantity and large format ingredients and equipment, you will be happy. Bought 3 full size flank steaks for $5/lb and some restaurant pans. Flashback to March 2020, and you might recall everyone was baking bread and no grocery stores had flour. That's what led me to discover Smart Foodservice, and they solved all my problems. For the record, I had been baking bread for a few months pre-pandemic, but of course I stepped up my game as well. And a 25-lb. bag of bread flour for $10 really helped feed that addiction. The best part is it was always in stock here! I'm at least 100 pounds of flour in at this point, and I've really enjoyed coming to Smart Foodservice to get my fix. It's pretty fun to just wander the aisles and see all the restaurant-size items. I don't have a giant family, so unfortunately most sizes of things are just way too much for me, but I know I'm also not the primary customer of the store and that's ok (but I am glad they let me shop here!). There are a few random finds of things that are more normal size, especially produce. I usually pick up some fruit or something when I'm here on my flour trip. The store is also relatively quiet - never insane like Costco - so it's not too stressful to shop there during these pandemic times. Their website also has a great search functionality... I'm not sure if it has ALL items, but it helps to be able to search for items you might be in the market for before coming to the store to get an idea of the type of stuff that they have in stock here. read more

This place is a hidden gem. Yes, you often have to buy huge sizes, similar to Costco. But, they have things that we were not able to buy at regular stores. It's not a full service store so you have to wander around and figure things out for yourself. However, we were able to find tofu which we were unable to find for a month. They had gloves and some paper products, and cleaning supplies. Again, you need to buy large sizes. What we found was the coffee syrups at an Excellent price, so becoming our own barista has not been a problem. They don't have a huge variety of items but they have what you need. read more

Hmmmm... I don't like leaving bad reviews for any businesses but when the store advertises certain sales one would expect to have those items available. The store located on San Carlos in midtown San Jose does have a lot of variety but the item I came to purchase was not even available at all, not due to inventory but due to broken refrigeration for the seafood section. It's a good sized store that could be considered a mini Costco. Disappointed, I left to go to another similar store down the same street and got what I needed for my party. I'd be back to check out the refrigerated meat section, and, hopefully, the refrigeration for the seafood will be fixed by then. I recommend calling the store ahead of time to check on their stock or store status. read more

I love this place. Enough said really. You do not need a business license to frequent this store and they have a multitude of very good food and packaging items perfect for a regular consumer, business owners, restaurant owners, etc. I overheard an employee kindly greeting a regular customer and telling her he had been there for 14 years. This business values loyalty and that really matters to me. Sometimes I'd like to see a higher amount of selection when it comes to certain categories of items, but I understand that this business is also competing with online availability and needs to remain profitable and suit local needs as well. The prices are great but equally important is the people they hire. Today I was looking for flank steak that they always have but the bin was empty. I found one of the workers stocking a different aisle and asked if by chance there was any more flank steak that hasn't been put out yet. (I think he had the name Buster on his shirt) he immediately stopped what he was doing and checked the cases in meat dept and it wasn't there. Then he went looking in the dairy dept (I'm guessing they temporarily use that refrigeration area for overflow) and went through the pallet carefully and found a case. It didn't matter to him that I only needed one bag. He was still going to look thoroughly to find it for me! That's service! Sometimes people don't care so much for customers or can't be bothered. This guy went out of his way to be helpful. Hope management sees this and recognizes the asset they have in him! Stopped in again today. I had hoped a couple of months would see things improving. they aren't. selection is falling further, and prices are getting silly. I bought exactly one thing on my list. Everything else was out of stock or crazy overpriced. I have learned to look at the smart and final retail grocer across the street and down a couple of blocks for pricing. There are other wholesalers that are even cheaper, but if a RETAIL store is cheaper, you know Chefs'store is in trouble. I mean - what is the point of saying you are in the wholesale business when your prices are way above retail? Are you just trying to cheat the public? Seriously, prices at Chef'store today were just out of line (compared to a retail grocer!!!) -peanut oil was 1/3 more than at the retail "smart and final" store! -I needed a few sleeves of foam hot cups - also priced higher than the retail price at smart and final (for exactly the same brand). -Had planned to pick up a couple of spices we were running low on - their price is more than double (DOUBLE!) smart and final. -Even a sack of flour was about 15% higher. And don't even get me started on their meat prices.... -(Note that none of the prices I mention from the retail grocer are "sale" prices. Just their everyday prices). So, I guess my visits to Chef'store are going to become even more infrequent. So sad to see a good business ruined by a greedy (or unbelievably incompetent) new owner.... read more

Never have I ever seen such MASSIVE quantities of....sugar, spices, sprinkles, candy, drinks and more This place is intended to be a restaurant supply store, and supply they do! What I bought: - I came for Torani syurps at good prices - DELIVERED. They didn't have all the flavors, but I found an amazingly yummy brown sugar flavor Torani syrup for under $5 (World Market has them for $8 and Smart and Final is usually $6). They also have Monin and Da Vinci syrups. - I couldn't pass up the huge container of cherry tomatoes for $4!
