This is my second try at the Takahashi. And whoa... Food: Seared Salmon (5/5) Whoa. Thick cut and excellent. Savory and very tender, with a nice balance of flavor and texture. This was easily the standout dish and the reason I would come back. Veggie Roll (5/5) Good portions with thick avocado and a solid mix of sesame, carrots, and cucumber. Fresh, clean flavors and very satisfying for a simple roll. Smoked Salmon (5/5) Good, thick pieces with nice smoky flavor. Fresh and well prepared. Overall, the food was consistent and high quality across everything we ordered. Service (4/5): Good overall, though it felt like there was only one hostess working during the rush hour. Because of that, things moved a bit slower than expected, but the staff was still polite and helpful. Ambiance (3/5): There are tables in the main dining area, bar seating, and more tables in the back. It works well for groups and families, but I would recommend making a reservation during busy hours. Parking is the biggest challenge. It is very tight and limited, especially when the restaurant is busy, which adds some stress before you even walk in. Came back for dinner on a Wednesday night and everything was great! Service was a lot better this time around. Our waitress was attentive, kind, and helpful. She was proactively checking in with the tables although she was busy with packing orders and making sure everyone was doing what they needed. 5 from me! Food tasted even better than last time. Mango was out of season for the Kango roll, so our waitress offered avocado as a substitute and the roll was just as delicious. Not sure what this restaurant was before it was a sushi place but the decor is interesting. Ramen was not great. The volcano roll was eh. The nigiri was cut thick and the fish tasted fresh. That's the only reason why I gave three stars. I don't know, maybe there are other things on the menu that people love that would make them give this place more than 3 stars but I just didn't think it was very good. read more

I've passed this place a hundred times a finally decided to stop. I was surprised at how busy it was for a random weeknight. There was only one server covering all the tables in the back and she was so apologetic for the wait time, to which she also acknowledged that it isn't normally that busy. This biz has apparently been around a long time! They've been open since 1985, I think. I've driven by many times and finally got the chance to stop in. There is a small parking lot out front, shared with the other business in this tiny strip mall which include a weed store and a bar so it's often busy. There's a gravel lot to the side for overflow. Inside Takahashi, there is much more seating than you expect, as they have a back area. As a solo diner, I was seated at the bar which was not ideal. I didn't have a great view of the chefs making the food. There was also a fan running behind me (to prevent the neighboring weed store's smell from infiltrating, somewhat unsuccessfully). Orders can be placed by sharpie on a laminated menu, which I love. Staff was friendly and kept an eye on my water. Portion sizes per price were generous - I got a lot of sushi! I don't know if it was the highest quality sushi I've had but it was tasty and filling. I'd come back, especially as it looks like they do some promos and specials at different hours on various nights of the week. read more

We had sat bar, and we just hear pure cussing within works as well the music was too loud so I couldn't even hear my husband. The short bald guy was wiping his sweat from his head then proceeded to touch the nigiri's!!! Takahashi has been a family favorite of ours for the last decade. They have wonderful staff and service and their food selection makes it a great place to go eat with the whole family. The restaurant is small so it fills quick during busy hours so expect a wait if you're dropping in during prime dinner time. Also be patient, with a smaller restaurant the wait time for food during busy hours can take a little longer. They serve a great selection of Japanese dishes and sushi. Their Uni pricing is hard to beat, and can normally be sold out (highly recommend a weeknight). Most sushi menus can be repetitive and similar but their menu has some nice specialties. Cho Cho is a great option for those looking to mix things up. I'd also recommend the Firecracker Roll, Seared Salmon, and Salmon Belly. I also enjoy their combo teriyaki plates and don bowls. read more

I absolutely loved the sushi. It was fresh and they did not shy away from giving big portions. The uni was so creamy and the salmon toro was so fresh. I would definitely come back again. The ambiance was adorable. All the decor was giving vibes as if you were actually in Japan and the server was so nice. I came on a Wednesday night, parking lot looked full, but got seated right away! They usually give 2 menus: one that seems like their main menu and one that has specials. Honestly, it's easy to get overwhelmed with all of the options, but any of the sushi I've tried has never disappointed. Portions are big and generous. Some sushi is up to 25% off! For this visit, we tried the fresh salmon nirigi, extreme unagi roll, volcano roll and firecracker roll. My partner and I are a big fan of the hamachi (yellowtail) nigiri and now the firecracker roll -- mostly because of the Cho Cho! We personally could have done without the extreme unagi and volcano. The big thing about parking is if you plan on parking in front of the restaurant, it's hard to get in and out with oncoming traffic because it's sort of narrow. There is a gravel lot on the opposite end for more space. I saw a review mentioning that the restaurant smelled like marijuana (since there is a store next door), but I can confirm that I could only smell tempura being fried! Takahashi is definitely one of my favorite sushi places in Portland. Before every visit, I tell myself to not order everything, but obviously that never happens. The service is always amazing and I always feel very welcomed everytime I visit. They always have smiles on their face and are very friendly. The fish always tastes fresh, I've never had a problem with the quality. The three pictures include everything that is a must get at Takahashi. The best item that gets us coming back is the roll topped with avocado and fried imitation crab. When you go in, make sure to write "kari kari" in the special orders box. If you're feeling adventurous, I definitely recommend the snake eyes. It's the combination of salmon eggs, tobiko, and a quail egg. You get creamy, salty, and rich flavors all in one bite. My last order recommendation is salmon belly. It will melt in your mouth which will make you melt in your seat. I would recommend getting here early since I've never had to wait for a table when I come early. This place would get a 11/10 rating if I could give that many stars. read more

Takahashi has been around in SE Portland for many years, We finally came on a Wednesday evening to try it out and got seated right away. On Wednesdays, many different type of sushi are at a discounted price. We tried nigiris and handroll, and rolls. My personal favorite is the hamachi nigiri!! It will literally melt in your mouth. The sushi was fresh and flavorful and I love the presentation. the restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and was huge! There was a bar seating area and multiple tables to sit at. I tried to attend Takahashi several years ago, but the overwhelming stench of marijuana smoke compelled us to leave immediately after being seated. Takahashi is in a strip mall and is located right next-door to a dispensary, and the common building HVAC seemed to be a very unfortunate conduit for cross-contamination. While I fully know that this is no fault of the restaurant, it didn't eliminate that actuality at the time, and actively deterred me from returning. Based on an absolutely glowing recommendation from a close friend whose opinion I highly respect, I decided to give it another try with a close friend who also loves sushi. On this trip, there was mercifully no marijuana stench. We were told it would be a 25-minute wait, and we were finally seated 90 minutes later. We were seated at the bar, which was frustrating since we'd have much rather had a table, especially after waiting 90 minutes. Service wasn't great. The couple who were in line in front of us, who were seated ten minutes before us, and who ordered before we were even seated, got their food AFTER we got ours. Since we were seated right next to each other at the bar, we thought that the waitress brought us their food, but she confirmed that it was our order, and asked why I asked. That seemed odd, but I told her that those seated next to us had ordered well before we did, and she said that wasn't the case. Very weird. This was on a Wednesday, which turned our to be their weekly "discount sushi" day. There are two different discount levels, depending on what you order. This makes for a low price of the quantity ordered. Aside from the long wait, weird service, and disappointingly getting seated at the smallish bar, how was the food? Nothing exceptional. The rolls are competent, and there were no issues, it just didn't stand out. There are some curious rolls on the menu, such as the "fried chicken and cream cheese" roll, but that doesn't seem appealing if one's looking for authentic sushi. There is a large tempura menu, which is nice, but none of our tempura seemed particularly expertly prepared. The mushrooms were undercooked in the middle, and the tempura on the salmon was not light and crisp, but was rather on the soggy side, suggesting that it may have sat for too long after it was fried and before it was served. Parking here is TERRIBLE! There are a few spaces up-front, and a few more in the back and on the side. The condition of the lot is awful, full of pot holes and very uneven. If you're in the neighborhood anyway, or happen to be shopping at the outstanding and huge garden center next-door, it may be worth stopping in, but I'd not recommend going out of your way to visit Takahashi. read more

It's easy to overlook Takahashi as it is located in an older looking plaza. The restaurant is a little outdated, but adds to the ambiance. My wife and I found this place by accident and really glad we did. My wife and I shared a bento box and some sushi. The price can be a little on the higher side, but their portions more than make up for it as we've had leftovers every time we went. Their nigiris have a good rice to fish ratio and don't skimp on the sushi fish cuts. My favorite is the salmon belly. The ribeye beef bowl was seared perfectly medium rare. Most Japanese places serve thinly sliced beef but Takahashi has thick, juicy cuts. The servers are very friendly and check up on you often. We've been back a few times since we discovered this place. Sushi is well manicured on the plate and has a creamy taste. The atmosphere is low light but not dark. I felt like I was on an old Japanese trading ship or a flagship at first as the ocean pirate decor threw me off. But once you sit and order your expensive plate of food, you can enjoy at your leisure. Not overly crowded the times I've been. The servers have very sweet faces and this helps as it can take quite some time for the order to come. I admit this is "alright" because they are made to order. Well now...on the strength of some comments on reddit, we tried to hit Takahashi a few weeks ago. Got there some 6:30, there was no parking in front or behind the restaurant. Given the neighborhood, we decided to try another time. And we're glad we did! Came in last night right after opening, plenty of open seats. Service was quick, our order was taken. I'm no sushi expert - I just like to eat fish and rice. We had a friend with us who lived in Japan and from the look of contentment on his face, I'm guessing we did ok. We ate and ate and ate - there were no bad dishes. Spent around $100 (including a flask of "premium" sake) between the three of us and we had no complaints. read more

This restaurant is so truly awesome! I am embarrassed to say that we have lived nearby for years, exactly four minutes away. Whenever I would drive by I always thought that it looked interesting and I love their sign with the retro design and lights. I knew we had to go one day, and when we finally did, I had INSTANT regret for not going sooner. It's such high quality and well prepared sushi. The spot itself is so cozy and unique and I really felt at home there! I was so impressed and curious, I sent a message to them on Facebook to ask about the history of the restaurant and they sent it to me! Takahashi has always been the spot for quick, pretty good sushi. They used to have 35% off on Wednesday's for sushi menu , but I'm not sure if they actually do that anymore. The staff is friendly, and are always making sure you have enough water, want to order anything else, or are doing alright. The interior is rustic and homey; definitely not minimalistic and not trying too hard. I do like the train that runs along the ceiling - it's a nice touch. I've tried different things on the menu, but one that's always good and satisfactory is the futomaki. It reminds me of Korean kimbap, and is HUGE. I also always get tempura, because at $1.00 for two pieces of potato or carrot?! That's a deal. It's never overly greasy or too fried. It always has the perfect crunch and goes great when dipped in the tempura sauce or sweet chili. I tried the tempura banana the other day and wow, I will be getting again. read more

I have heard good things about Takahashi and I would definitely confirm to that notion after eating here for the first time. I would like to mention that as soon as I entered the restaurant, there was a man who was also waiting for his food that said he has been coming to Takahashi for 20 years. He said that the food here is really good and all the staff knows him. I came on a Wednesday which was actually the best day that you could go on due to the 30% off special discount. My meal was very inexpensive compared to what I get at other sushi restaurants! I couldn't believe it at first and I thought it was a mistake, however it wasn't. When I called and ordered my food to go, It took around 30 minutes for my order to complete. I ordered 5 pieces of nigiri: Sweet shrimp, Yellowtail, Octopus, Mackeral and Red Crab. I also ordered a spicy tuna hand roll (really spicy) and the Catapillar Roll. All incredibly delicious and meticulously concocted. The waitress was kind and the workplace environment was comforting. If I lived closer I would always get my sushi from here. I'll have to just swing by the Takahashi when I'm around the area. read more

Cozy and inviting. The ambiance here is amazing. It's a little chaotic but it works and it was great to admire the decor. As for the food, not the best sushi I've had in my life and I'm not sure if it satisfied my sushi craving. The salmon nigiri was pretty solid. My boyfriend usually enjoys creamy scallop but did not really like it. It was cut up very finely so it was kind of hard tasting that scallop flavor. The seared salmon was not it. It was basically cooked all the way through and thus not too enjoyable. As for the rolls, one of them had too much rice for my liking. The other, the waitress recommended the monkey brains. Not listed on the menu but probably one of the better things I ate that night. It was a large fried roll with tuna, avocado and crab meat. The sushi is good and the prices are great. I'm impressed by how well it held up for takeout considering how much we ordered. Some places have huge rolls and most of it is rice, but not here. Takahashi has been a favorite of mine for years. My visit 10/27/24 was a huge disappointment, and they didn't appear to be swamped with customers as we arrived. Tempura was (as usual) wonderful except for not having one of the standard ingredients. The service was not up to the usual standards, and the sushi roll was sloppily done, IMHO, with the rice unevenly distributed around the roll which made it fall apart while trying to eat it. My miso soup came with the delivery of the tempura - too late. The tempura was cooled off by the time even some of the soup was consumed. Teeny portion of green tea was almost insulting, sushi roll was poorly made. We were provided with ONE napkin each and no convenient way to acquire another when needed, and it was necessary to request chopsticks for our take-away order.
