I've been here several times in the past few weeks. I'm no ramen expert. If you don't count "Top Ramen" I've eaten Pho' way more. However that is only because I hadn't made the plunge in to restaurant Ramen. I first came to Tokyo Ya a few weeks ago & as I write I'm here for the fourth time. I can really only speak for 2 items on the menu. the #3 Ramen(Tonkotsu Miso) & the Pork Steamed buns. I had a gift card to Tokyo-Ya. Located in the Eastport Plaza mall, it's not the most desirable destination. Easy parking in the lot. For a little under $50, we got two ramen bowls, edamame, sesame balls, green tea, and mochi ice cream. Everything was fine - decent noodles and broth, wish my spicy bowl had a more kick to it, good portion size. Staff was attentive. Service was quick. Decor was nice and the place was clean. We've driven by on numerous occasions. Finally decided to stop and give it a try. Our server was fairly quick in taking our order, but not especially friendly. The menu claims the Tonkotsu Miso Ramen is their most popular item. We ordered Tonkotsu Miso Ramen and Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen. Hubby said he thought the Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen broth was more flavorful than his Tonkotsu Miso broth. Ramen additions include corn kernels, bamboo shoots, slivered green onions 1/2 tomago (egg) and 2 slices of seared char siu pork belly. The Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen also came with 2 squares of nori (dried seaweed) The texture of the ramen was good. The Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen broth was flavorful. Unfortunately, the char sui pork belly did not taste fresh. It tasted like old pork which ruined the experience for me. The chicken karaage was tasty and is served with a dipping sauce. (spicy mayo) I would have preferred the chicken to a bit more crispy, but I guess that is personal preference. The ramen was okay. I've had better...I've had worse. Would I go back? The first gloomy day in portland. I was feeling particularly cozy, and felt that the evening called for some nice, hot, comforting soup. We ordered it to-go, and i was handed the most disappointing bowl of soup i have EVER received. Only a 3 minute drive from our house, the broth was cold and flavorless. I'll keep it short and simple. I got the number 2, which was the spicy ramen. Noodles were chewy. Good texture, not too soft and not too hard. Loved it. Soup base could have been better. I had no spicy kick that made my pores open up. The menu gave it 2 spicy chili signs...yea, it's more like none. The extra side stuff in the ramen was also just okay. In terms of constructive criticism, this could have been strengthened if the soup base had more flavor and was more potent. It was more watery unfortunately. My friend got the miso ramen, the most popular item. He wants to move to Japan and so he was getting the japenese ramen experience. In this way, he said that this spot was okay. Taking a step back from my previous enthusiastic review. Since my earlier review Tokyo-Ya Ramen has done away with their happy-hour specials of half-price appetizers, and now the restaurant is cutting back on some toppings. While before they'd garnish your bowl of ramen with three heatlhy slices of pork, the slices now are much thinner and they give the bowl only two. Their pork-bone broths remain the same as do our favorites -- the tonkotsu shoyu and the tonkotsu miso. Still, very good ramen, but not five stars. read more

I've had better and I think my expectations were set too high from word of mouth. The spicy karaage don was really yummy although maybe a touch too salty. The tonkatsu miso ramen ramen is advertised as the most popular bowl. It was flavorful and satisfied my ramen craving well. Although I think it was, like the karaage, a little too salty. It had traditional toppings (soft boiled egg, pork, bamboo, and fish cake) and was just what I was expecting. My partner's Tan tan bowl though was really bland. The difference between the two was staggering. If you're deciding between the two, go with the tonkatsu broth. Also, it's advertised right outside the door on their sidewalk sign that they have happy hour 2-5pm. Yet, when I asked the waitress about it, she said it was 11-2pm. Not sure what's up with their happy hours... either let your servers know or change the signs? I give this place 3.5 stars, but since they're just beginning and figuring out the kinks I'll round up. If you like it watered down, and flavorless ramen this is probably the spot for you. It didn't seem like the broth was seasoned well at all. It just tasted like water with a slight sesame aftertaste. Happy that an izakaya has opened on this side of town. This is a pretty restaurant and the bathroom is clean and modern. We ordered the potato croquettes, spicy karaage don, and miso ramen. The croquettes were freshly fried and creamy. The miso ramen was a big bowl of tasty noodles, broth, pork, and poached egg. The broth was good, just not as much flavor as I hoped. As for the menu, they had 6 ramen options, donburi rice bowls, and appetizers like calamari, gyoza, karaage, and takoyaki. The prices were very reasonable.
