The young lady there is very nice. I ordered a 10/2 and a young man prepared the sandwich. He actually gave me a old sandwich. First the paper was soaked thru with oil and the ends of the roll was so hard, like a 2 day old roll. Could not bite the ends. Lettuce was not crisp. Placed a big order this morning for 7 subs. 5- 6+2's and 2 turkey and cheese. We get the subs and the turkey and cheese was $13.50. I called back and asked why so much? Its because you got swiss cheese on 1 and pepper jack on the other so that's an additional $1.75 each! When asked what cheese normally comes on it she said PROVOLONE!!!!! Can you honestly upcharge for swiss and pepper jack? Was never told there was an upcharge. We gave them the benefit of the doubt since last order subs were more like 4+1's. It is a store a store you buy stuff at and leave . But if you're there to eat you gotta go with the eight meat two cheese at least. However, I was picking up my car from the dealership and realized that the deli was less than 2 miles from work. What luck! A few quick turns and I was pulling into one of the parking spots out front. The deli is small, with a small refrigerated case displaying a few sides. Two lovely people were managing the lines. One, who was assembling the subs and the other who rang up the orders. The menu is quite simple. You need to decide on the number of deli slices and cheeses, as well as the bread type. For example, if you want 5 meats and 1 cheese, it would be a 5x1. I had a 6x2 on a hard roll. The end result was quite good. The roll was fresh and crusty, loaded with deli meats and cheese, lettuce and thinly-sliced tomatoes, no onions, and Italian dressing. It was so good (for the soul) and definitely better tasting than my usual salad. Service was exceptionally quick. Went in today and ordered a couple hard roll 6&2s, but after we got home, we noticed they mistakenly made 5&1s, which were tasty, but definitely not as good. Too much bread, not enough filling. We asked about the different refrigerated salads and they said the pasta and mustard-potato were both homemade. We went with the $2 mustard potato and found it tasted far too sweet. My coworker brought me here and bought me an Italian sub. It was lunchtime badness, and yes, it had Italian dressing all over.

Hoagie - HOE-gee: could be in reference in to pork or "hog" meat sandwiches, or a possible racial slur of "honky sandwich" (my personal favorite interpretation of the etymology of the word) I've been on a hoagie kick. Quick, easy, delicious, and satisfying. So far I've been to Alcamo's, here and all the way out to Ventimiglia on a quest for the most meaty, delicious, appetite suppressing hoagie. Service is smug, but quick. Two teenage boys making subs, an older gentleman taking orders, in an unusually dark, extremely quiet, and otherwise spartan place. There's no life. It takes on the feel that much of Detroit has. Some embers still burn, there's a soul somewhere, but it's clear that it ain't what it used to be. Enough social history, on the physical exam: the sub was as sad as the interior. Five layers of meat? Whoa. Take a look for yourself. It is some of the saddest, thinnest layers of meat ever. The mortadella they use is not remarkable in any way. Not spicy, more like Oscar Meyer baloney than actual true salume. And the sauce? Unremarkable, could hardly taste it. Where has all the flavor gone? What the real kicker was, what really got this a 2 star instead of a 3 star experience? The lettuce was browning. The shredded lettuce, the SAME shredded lettuce that Subway uses, was past its prime. 5 meat + 1 cheese = $5 (don't ask what the 5 meats ARE, because I didn't see any description, just assume pork, pork, and more pork) 6 meat + 2 cheese = $5.75 15 layers meat + 3 layers cheese = $10.75 They've got regular deli and grilled sandwiches too. They accept credit cards, and do not carry my precious Dr. Browns. I wouldn't come running here, but if you're around Dearborn -- and looking for something that doesn't resemble a falafel -- try one of the hoagie shops! I'm surprised to be the first to review this place. It's a long-time favorite for awesome subs/grinders/hoagies (depending on where you're from) in a no-nonsense atmosphere. I originally grew up in Southwest Detroit and the Gonella's there was my first exposure to quality meats on a crusty loaf of bread. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the same meats, bread etc is available right my current neighborhood in Dearborn. This is my home away from my kitchen when it comes to sandwiches. Their subs are GREAT!! I've spent many years at the Detroit location and this one. Both spots are fantastic but the Detroit spot changed owners a few years back and just isn't the same as years past. I come here fairly often with my work group. We call it Gonella's in the park: grab some sandwiches and head over to the park across the street and eat at the park benches. There is only one way to order here: Meat/Cheese Combo, Hard/Soft, Toppings. You'll be judged by the regulars if you say too many words in your order. Examples: "5 & 1, Soft, No Onions", "6 & 2, Hard, Everything". Their sandwiches are the bomb, just keep it simple and order off the main menu. It's fast, the staff is friendly, and I always get a smiley drawn on my sandwich. I've been going to Gonella's for about 20 years. Never had a bad sandwich. I keep it simple with a 5 and 1 on a soft roll. Add a pickle and a bag of chips and you've got a meal that's better than any of the garbage low quality sandwich's from subway. Staff is always friendly and fast. For those who are confused with the ordering system, the first # is the amount of meat and the second # is amount of cheese.
