I went shopping at Valley Harvest Foods on Military Road in Auburn and noticed the Mexican restaurant inside the market with a casual appeal, a fairly decent dining area and a cafeteria-style counter. The service was friendly. After checking out their salsa bar, we took a chance and ordered the Chile Rellenos, a 3 Taco Combination Plate with Asada, Pollo, and Pastor, along with Chips and Salsa and a Piña drink. Their food reminded me of a family-run restaurant with authentic street food taste. The chips and salsa were fresh and made a great starter. The salsa was flavorful. They don't pull back on the heat which is perfect. We also tried the Piña drink, which was refreshing and paired perfectly with the meal. The Chile Rellenos did not disappoint. The pepper was tender, good amount of cheese filling and their tomato sauce paired well. The 3 Taco Combination Plate was the highlight of the meal. The meats were flavorful, the rice and beans was traditional and everything paired well with the salsa from the bar. I was so impressed with their table side service. This is truly a hidden gem and the prices are on par with other area restaurants. I definitely enjoyed the experience which was amplified with a World Cup football game on TV, a small cheering squad and would highly recommend this spot. read more

I am not a Tamales person since they don't have enough fillings for me. We'll I have finally found a place that sells them and make them fresh daily. Also, if you like freshly made chicherons come here in their mexican resturant. Chicherons are by the meat department if not already sold out. But definitely come to the Mexican Resturant, you will not de disappointEd. People are very friendly too. If you went by looks, you would not think this place would have good food. This review is for the Mexican restaurant operation inside the grocery store. Discovered information about this place from a posted notice at a senior center activity board. Always looking for ethic food venues. This food court operation that served Mexican style food did not disappoint. Since they had a rotating menu, we didn't get the choice initially wanted. Since it was our first time there we took a chance and had what looked the best in the display case. We shared an order of the beef soup, roasted pork ribs, and a chili relleno. The ribs were a bit dry but still good. The soup was excellent. Beef was well simmered to just right tenderness and in a full flavored broth. The relleno was typical pre-made cook to order, but done right. Had the option of not getting it all junked up with sour cream and other American stuff. Got to enjoy the egg batter and chile flavor on its own. Good selection of beer from the self served case. As a food court type eatery, I was very pleased with both the quality of food, skill in preparation, and the table service. After shopping, we decided to get additional food as takeout for dinner that night...selected "beef ranchero", a style of stew", piece of beef birria, and two termales. All tasted excellent that night and the next day as leftovers... noted that the beef items were properly stewed when the leftover cooled meat were in a congealed liquid ... indicating it had cooked the connective tissue to right doneness... to give the full beefy flavor in the sauce...We will go back to try other items ... especially on weekends when they will have pasole, chili verde, and menudo read more

If you want some authentic Hispanic food products and not wanting overpriced specific grocery items like avocados, this is it. They have a wide variety of grocery items, produce, sauces, a bakery in the back, a deli, and a hot food area. I saw someone without their mask on handling with the baked goods and especially during covid times, I would very hesitant on grabbing baked goods or requesting a cake. They also have self served baked goods, where you can grab whatever baked goods that are on the shelves, but again, with covid times, I would have thought they would change up the self serve. read more

Stopped today out of curiosity. Seeing as how we've moved to an apartment in close proximity, we decided drop in for a tour. Not impressed at all. Place needs serious cleaning and organizing. The covered pans containing prepared (hot) foods were covered in splashes of gravy, sauces and bits of food. YUCK! There was another counter (staffed) serving food, but what was on display appeared dry and/or old. The cantaloupes had seen better days and many were pot-marked with what appeared to be mold. Many of the vegetables on display suffered the same look. Don't think we'll be back. read more

This is an ethnic Grocer with many items you can get at your regular grocery but many you cannot. But I'm not here to tell you about groceries. I come here to eat because these guys have the best damn Mexican food I think I have ever had. The service is fabulous and the food is so good I can't explain. All the AquaFresca offerings I've ever seen! Puerca Verde (with cactus)....Awesome! BBQ Lamb (Barbacoa Borrego) to die for! Fajita shrimp, Encheladas Suisa, fresh tamales, fresh made tortillas. Enough cannot be said about their generosity and their amazing food. Looking for a Carniceria? Look no further! I am going to stop this review here because I could go on forever about how good this place is. Take it or leave it they've got it going on, so don't hesitate. At first I was kinda thrown -off by the different look of the "order at the counter-eat at the table and pay when you leave" style, but I have yet to have better Mexican food; and I am one tough customer! You're probably wondering why I'm rating this place 4 stars. There's a lot more to this place than it looks. First of all, It is locally owned and there are a lot more things to buy here than you think. Unfortunately, I could say very little about the Mexican restaurant and their pink rice except for their exceptional carnitas. Don't eat there as it's really not that good. The produce section is great when they have fresh stuff. I skip when they don't. The produce outside are so cheap. But on sunny days, they get the sun. The carniceria is great! Keep in mind if you chose to buy steaks here, your jaw may be in pain. They are not USDA choice so skip the steak. Everything else is great if you eat all kinds of meat! They even make chorizo and smoke them in here. Their chicken breasts are thinly sliced and the adobada is not bad. There a lot of interesting meats if you're experimental in cooking like me. You'll find cheese in here, too specifically mexican cheese. I love tge fresca and Oaxaca. They come cheap and are great for lasagna or chile relleno. Explore the grain and flour area. They have all kinds of grains and flour from all over the world. I found plantain flour and cassava flour. There are tons of goodies from everywhere. If you like plantain chips, spicy peanuts, you'll find it here. There are tons of ethnic spices and food items. It's convenient if you're needing a special ingredient. The only drawback is there's a slight markup on it. Keep in mind HMart serves nationwide while this place serves the local area. At the freezer area, we discovered Puff Paratha. Great discovery. The bakery is great! Tons of cheap pastries and bread. They have pound cake, bolilo rolls, flan, tres leches, donuts and mexican pastries. You can also order cakes. Neat! Red Square Market: The STAR of the show is the annexed Eastern European deli store. I believe their either Ukranian or Polish. Their deli section is great! This is the place to get authentic Kielbasa, headcheese, mortadella, cured ham, etc. They even let you try samples if you are nice. The kielbasa here are not like your Jenny-Os. They are meatier in taste and leaner. The fridge is chockful of pelmenis, ice cream, dairy and more pastries. I sampled their ice cream and they're delicious and unique. If you dive in deeper in the store, you'll find selection of chocolates, pastries, authentic bottled and canned food items. Yes! They have pate! I don't understand cyrillic but most of it is obvious. Fresh baked bread! In terms of service, both Valley Harvest and the Deli delivers. Don't be put off by its looks. This place is great. read more

It has definitely improved since the last time I was here (several years ago). They still have LOTS of rotten produce (yuck - I don't want bananas with fruit flies on them for .19 a lb!) The girls got 2 Mexican sodas and a small box of Mexican cookies for $9 - are you f****ing kidding me.........Everything in the store was double the price you should pay (but they have a captive audience with all the apartments and the trailer park). The russian deli and the carnitas counter which are "seperate" actually had reasonable prices and I may come back to try them out. read more

Went here after church service to grab some lunch. Was referred from family who stated they have island/samoan food. Walked in and tried to find where the samoan food was being served. There are no signs to direct you. It's a busy store because it's a market and they serve hot food (Samoan & Mexican). So we walk in and turn right to get to our destination. You can just smell the food. It's 7.99/lb for the hot food which is self serve. I don't really like that idea. Wish they had someone there to plate your food because you never know with people grabbing food on their own-kind if yuck. Only thing they will plate for you is the poke and oka. Ordered tilapia (also 7.99 each) and they fry it as soon as you order it. Took about 7-10mins. They checked us out there. Food is pricey but it was tasty. Staff was friendly. They were pretty busy when we were there. Would come again. read more

GROSS! After the windstorms and power outage (a week without power), these people just let their soggy, thawed food refreeze in their freezers and resold it. Not even at a discount. I complained and everyone suddenly didnt speak English! They knew what I was talking about....the really insidious part of this is that their clientele consists mainly of Russian and Spanish speaking people....who are new to this country and do not know the health laws.... If you are searching for Russian made products, they do lease a small section of the store to a Russian Bakery/Deli. They carry lots of interesting foods...and I noticed that their deli case was empty after the power outage...except for the dried meat products. These folks import lots of Russian brands...along with other European delicacies, try their cakes....they are layers of wafers with fillings and frostings....mmmmmmm! Their homebaked breads are heavy, healthy, and wonderful. Please note that Valley Harvest itself is not safe to shop in....they have a goat, yes an entire goat...in the freezer section....that has been there since before the wind-storm....it is partially unwrapped, freezerburned, covered in ice crystals...and it smells...even when frozen it smells. Yes, the place is not the cleanest but I don't care as long as they have what I need and I need carnitas!!!!! The carnitas, chicharron and tamales are to die for. They have a great variety of mexican produce and its very cheap compared to other places. They also sell flan and tres leches cake in the bakery section and both are soooo good and again, the prices are reasonable. The pan dulce is very authentic and they have a good selection. They have an European food space next to them and it seems like they have a lot of things that european people would like. I would love to try it but I would need an expert to help me out. Went in on 9/2/14 and ordered a tres leches cake for my daughter for her birthday on 9/3/14 paid for it 30 bucks no big deal its for my baby girl . So I go to pick it up at 3pm they can't find it?????? No management on site the girl helping me had to call the baker that was not on site also he shows up and said....... I thought it was for tomorrow 9/4/14. His paper work my paper work had 9/3/14on it. Got my money back not once did the baker say sorry or anything. Pissed me off no cake for my daughter on her birthday I will never shop there again and telling all my Mexican friends to do the same!!!! Be very careful on what you buy here at the Hot Samoan food section. Just purchased 3 orders of fe'e (Octopus) and when I got home, it smelt very spoiled!! I went back to get my money back and hoping that they can compensate something else do to selling spoiled food and my grandma not feeling good after eating it. But, they said all they can do was return my money back. They opened the container and couldn't tell if it was spoiled or not. How can you not tell what spoiled food smells like!? Especially if you're running a business with selling hot foods!?!? Not pleased at all with my visit here today. Poor customer care. Spent over $100+ on food today here. Never coming back!! As with the other reviewers, the produce here seems a little sketchy to me. But I go for the carnitas, which are consistently pretty good. It is a unique market which seems to have a strong Russian and Latino following, and that's just fine by me. If you're in the area it's worth a trip just to see something out of the ordinary. About the only thing I buy here is chicken fajita meat and tortillas. Produce always seems a little overly ripe for my taste. Everything else I don't bother with because it seems like it may have been there for a while, besides I think I get a better deal across the street at that grocery store. read more

Manager is late on a regular basis and store opens at 8am and I have had to wait over 15 minutes several times. She is rude and doesn't care about her customers or her staff. When I have reminded her that the store opens at 8am and other customers have left, her comment is always oh well... If you need to be there at 8am, don't arrive until 8:30am. read more

I have been craving for Tres Leche for months. I randomly found this place and it did not disappoint!

It's kinda far from where I live but it's worth it I absolutely love their tres leches cake the best there is in the area it's worth the try

I almost wanted to give this place one star for being so dirty alone...you can find some! good buys..but I felt that I had to really search for them..and finding something that didn't look like it had been on the shelves for 10 years was a challenge. It is a shame that more care isn't taken in cleaning it up because I think it could be a great place to find non traditional groceries at...for example they carry some of my favorite Hawaiian juices. I wasn't impressed with the home made tortillas..I got both the corn and flour and felt both were very dry and not FRESH tasting at all. I have lived in Mexico and do know what a fresh made one tastes like. It did look like the liquor are might be interesting so I will be back to check that out. read more

They have food here from different cultures which is great, however I wish they would care more for the store up keep. On some level you have to enjoy the appearance of the store from which you want to purchase and spend your hard earned money at. This must be a new place with a new owner, since 2007. There's a village atmosphere with staff that speak many languages. I came in for veggies and ended up buying: Beef marrow bones for my Grandmother's Soup Recipe, Oxtails for a stew that I learned to make in Germany, and am yet to try the Beef Shank steaks in a pot roast. The meat was fresh and the two meals I cooked were wonderful! I also bought Tea from Kenya, canned "Imam Bayaldi" from Turkey ( I used to live there, so am anxious to try it), Filo dough, Cookies from Germany, American made whole grain pasta, rice sticks and seaweed from Japan. I love cooking ethinc foods, the assortment of ingredients found at Valley Harvest will keep me coming back! By the way, I did not have to pick through the veggies for what I wanted any more than I do at Major Grocery Stores. There is also a Mexican Taquera next to the meat section that makes fresh burritos on the spot (I had a delicious carnitas burrito while shopping) He also makes fresh Chicharones (fried pork rinds) right there. I also took home a pound of Head Cheese from the Russian Deli. (there was an assortment of 5 to choose from and the clerk gave me a sample of each so I could decide. read more
