One of my helpers wanted to try Val's as he'd heard of it but never tried it since he was from Fremont. We drove into the sparsely utilized parking lot on a Friday afternoon. As we walked up, now noting the restaurant is vacant but there are a couple of outdoor tables available under a canopy. An older lady took our order, we ordered 3 mama burgers and one bag of fries. A younger lady served us our order. The burgers were made medium as we requested and enjoyably tasty. The one size bag of fries was sufficient for 4 people. We asked the server if there are plans to reopen the restaurant and she didn't know. As we found out later, the restaurant is only open Friday and Saturday, cash only, for take out or limited outdoor eating area. It had been a while since I had eaten here when inside was available, disappointing as the appeal of old style architecture and memorabilia surroundings is missed. However, the meal was good, just missing the nostalgia. read more

Tbh at this price, and flavor....just get five guys, more toppings, better tasting, open everyday, not cash only, more fries, same size burger and about the same price if not cheaper. ONLY DOWNFALL IS YOU CANNOT EAT INSIDE. You order through a phone number on the door or the nice lady comes out and takes your order. The dining room gives off the perfect 1950's diner vibe and is so incredibly cute. We were greeted immediately, we ordered and they have a nice seating arrangement around the back. The older gentleman, I assume the chef was super nice. They both kept cing and checking on our party. Great charbroiled burger and delicious fries!!! read more

So, this place was the place to go back in the day. Everything was spot on. Burgers, Shakes, Onion rings, even steaks were top notch and not even top priced. Alas, COVID-19 took it's toll and they no longer have inside service. RIP to the inside part of the restaurant. Still wins best burger awards. read more

An east bay staple. It's unfortunate they no longer have indoor seating and a slimed down menu, but hey it's better than nothing at all. The hamburgers are still legendary as are the big bags of fries. read more

Val's burgers used to be the spot. The service was absolutely great. The lady that answered the phone was just so polite and, and had very good energy. This is what I remember about the service from Val's in the past. There's not really any ambience right now because they only do takeout. The food in comparison to price was absolutely horrible. I hope they really use some of these reviews, as a learning experience. Our food was really bad. Cheeseburger bun was soaked in mayonnaise and mustard and ketchup literally the buns are drenched the sodas are coming in cans. We basically paid $50 for fries, two burgers and two cans sodas. I understand that inflation is up but there's no need to gouge off of your customers. I hope Val's comes back to the way it used to be. read more

When we drove up, we were met immediately at our car by George's wife taking our order and making sure we know where to go to to sit and eat outside. The bottom line is the best hamburgers cooked perfectly to order the best french fries and when you can get it the best milkshake on earth I've been coming here for at least 40 years. The prices are a little steep for a neighborhood burger joint at first look but the quality in the love that's put into this food is beyond Compare anywhere. The only thing that I can say I miss is having the full restaurant open, where we all could come in and sit with our friends and neighbors, and enjoy the best food and watch bowels team make memories that have lasted for our lifetimes. Val's is my favorite spot every Saturday. I have been coming here for over 50 years and it never disappoints. Fun fact is that the hamburger here is always fresh and never frozen. Shakes are great and the extra crispy fries are the best. Post Covid, Val's is open Friday and Saturday for pick up only. The family that operates the restaurant are the best to boot! I recommend you give Val's a try. Unbelievable that they have been in Hayward since 1958. I heard that today is the last day for milk shakes for the season so run on over and enjoy! read more

It had been years I have came to Vals and decided to order from them. I checked their website which is outdated and gave them a call. A Lively gal answered the phone and told me they no longer have their little burgers so I opted for 3 mamá burgers, fries and onion rings. She told me $70 bucks with no lettuce, onions, tomato or a fountain drink. I felt like canceling it but gave them the benefit of the doubt. Arrived and see why their burgers are soo expensive. Please avoid and drive down the strip where theres Bouvelard, Nations and a few other spots to grab a burger with fries and soda. Not again read more

We finally got a chance to return to Val's yesterday! we live in Pinole and don't have much reason to head to Hayward. The burger is just as wonderful as I remember, the fries were yummy. The limited menu did not offer my all around chocolate shake so at least I saved a few thousand calories. I am so happy to have that flame burger patty, cooked rare as requested. Before we start know this *CASH ONLY* so there's a 711 across the street if u need to make a run to the ATM. First time coming here but it won't be the last! Heard a lot about this place so I had high expectations. Ordered the Mommy burger and it was amazing. Great char and seasoning on it, reminds me of a great backyard BBQ burger with plenty of fresh ingredients and great protein used! The fries are basically a WHOLE POTATO SACK! Burgers are awesome as always....No complaints on quality. We hadent gone to Vals since they closed for covid and never reopend their dining room. Decided to order "to go" today. Super nice folks, great service. Major sticker shock. We ordered 2 papa burgers and 2 orders of onion rings and the bill came to $80. I understand that they are open two days a week for take out only and have got bills to pay like everyone else. Went there for the first time in about 10 years today, expecting to be disappointed. I was reluctant to go because I don't remember the burgers being all that great before. Take out only and cash only, with limited hours. Prices are really expensive. BUT, the burgers were phenomenal (with tomato, relish and grilled onions) and the extra crispy fries were extra delicious. We had one order of fries and two burgers, but the fries portion was so large that we still have enough fries for another meal. Friendly service. Recommended for a bit of a splurge! read more

This burger place holds a special place in my wife's heart. Growing up in the Bay Area, she went to this place and insisted that it was one of the best burgers she ever had. She wanted to share the experience with me and I agree, it was a phenomenal burger. Unfortunately we couldn't sit inside but they were open so we ate on some small tables they set up in the back. We both got their big mama burgers and a single order of fries. The single order of fries could literally feed four people. The burger was amazing! Flavorful and cooked exactly how I wanted it. Service was friendly. We had to call from outside and place our order. They brought it out us when it was done. Val's was a great place and made a delicious burger. I had a really good burger, but basically everything else was very bad. Expensive: basic burger was $16 and fries were $7. Seems ridiculously overpriced. Ambiance: Horrible. The restaurant is shut down and they force guests in an actual parking lot. Gross and definitely unappetizing. Service: Very Bad. We showed up and they asked us to call a phone number written on a piece of cardboard on the window, rather than taking our order themselves. Additionally it was cash only and we had to physically walk to a 711 to retrieve cash. Overall the vibe was very unwelcoming like they didn't really want customers. read more

They are a great snack while you wait for your meal. 9/10 - The ube pancakes: These were pretty solid. I didn't think that the pancakes themselves had a very strong ube flavor, if any. I think all of the flavor was in the ube coconut sauce that they come with. However, there is only sauce on the first layer so you might want to get extra! It is an additional $2.75 or so to get the extra side of ube sauce, though. The pancakes themselves could have been a little more moist and fluffy, as they were a bit dry and dense. I loved the fruit and sauce, so that definitely made up for it! I'm glad that I got to try, but I don't think I'd get them again. Instead, I would get a regular pancake and a side of the ube coconut cream! 8/10 - The chorizo burrito: My bf said that this was also a pretty good option. The menu also boasts lots of great drinks including mate tea! Lucky us, the empanadas we ordered weren't in stock so we had to wait ~10 for freshly baked ones. They came out buttery and piping hot, even with little hand-stamped letters on them so you know what you're eating, and it was so delicious. Most are about $5.50 each. Add oregano chimichurri for a bit extra if you want or pair with a tea, but these empanadas really hit the snacky spot. Lots of wooden tables with fresh flowers make Pampas a great space to chat with friends or to sit and do some work. The most standout feature was the friendly and efficient staff who seem to build connections with everybody who walks in the door. Worth a drive to Castro Valley!
