Time for a feel good great service story. This past Saturday I had a routine oil change at Valvoline in Alexandria. Upon leaving their facility I accepted a Lyft rider to Manassas. While cruising down I-66 the check engine light appeared on the dashboard. Upon completing the ride, I attempted to call the Alexandria Valvoline- couldn't even get a ring. Penny called, asked to speak to their manager..... nobody picked up. At this point I'm driving winding rural Virginia roads in a full blown panic. Penny then called the Fairfax location and spoke with their manager, Anna. They told me to bring the car into Fairfax ASAP. Within 15 minutes I was at the Fairfax Valvoline. Despite being the fourth car in line, Anna greeted me with the diagnostic sensor remote. After a quick read, it was the catalytic converter which trigged the check engine light. This was a first for my car. She then reset the dashboard. Upon her recommendation, I went next door to Meinecke. The manager there gave me a full blown lesson on catalytic converters and said it was quite possible the oxygen sensors 'got lazy' and gave a false read. Regardless, the current result is the probable false alarm from the dashboard and does not affect the performance of my car. If the light does reappear, the kind gentleman at Meinecke will do a more thorough analysis. Ultimately, it's great to have Penny come through in the clutch and Anna following through on a promise to take care of my car so efficiently in their shop, even though they did not initially service my car!! 5 Star Service! read more

For 25 years, we've been taking our 4 cars to Valvoline for oil changes and vehicle repairs. Always get excellent, honest advice at fair pricing. My most recent "episode" was yesterday upon hearing noises which sounded like it was from under the hood, while driving home with a car full of groceries. I stopped at Valvoline, and Mr. Ammoury drove my car a bit, after which he said there was no noise. We both guessed that perhaps there was something stuck under the car which fell off. I would give this place zero stars if I could. I went in for an oil change which is typically ~$80 in this area in my experience. It cost $103 here. Going to another place they would've done the oil change along with replenishing liquid levels for the vehicle and I've also received many tire rotations too complimentary - none of that here. The whole place was a mess and staff could not speak English. The icing on the cake here was that they left a HUGE oil stain on my car seat and now I'm struggling to get it out. 2 years ago we had a brake line failure in our 2006 Tahoe. Took it here because it was close. They were supposed to replace all metal lines. We just found out they didn't change the hardest one to get to, above frame rail going to rear wheels. It just broke. Have called them about it. Still working the issue. I came here for an oil change on a whim, as my usual place up the street was busy and this shop had really good reviews. I generally stay away from express oil change places because I don't think they are reliable for other kinds of maintenance (belts, fluids, brakes, etc). They either don't do the inspection or they recommend work you don't need. I was surprised to find out that they recommended a transmission fluid change. It made me even more suspicious when he said tranmission fluid needed changed every 2 years. No way that's true. My fears were slightly alleviated when he told me there wasn't time to take care of it at that visit (Saturday is too busy). Would he really push me out the door and recommend work I don't need at the same time? Hmm. He said the fluid was "really dirty" and when I asked if it could wait a month he said it needed to be "changed immediately." I got home and checked the fluid myself, it wasn't brand new but didn't seem terribly dirty. So I took the car to a transmission shop for a second opinion on that and some other work that I needed done. That guy - again, a shop that focuses on transmissions - told me the fluid was not that bad. He said he'd run some cleaner through it and do a change but it certainly didn't need flushed and that "oil change places are always going to tell you to replace fluids." That flies in the face of so many of these Yelp reviews who say this place is trustworthy. Maybe they aren't getting second opinions. I'm giving three stars because the oil change was speedy and cheap for the area. -2 for the recommendations on other work. read more

Took my car here for an oil change because of good reviews. They recommended the passenger side axle change which was leaking but instead changed the driver side by mistake. Tried to argue that it is the one they agreed to change but luckily receipt stated clearly it was the passenger side. So got it replaced for free. Three months later both axles were leaking. Fixed under warranty. 6 months later driver side axle was leaking again. Changed again under warranty. 6 months later leaking again. Had to take it to a different place at that time. I don't know if they just used inferior parts or also did subpar installation but based on that experience I won't use them again read more

I stumbled on this shop when I purchased an older car from Ammoury Auto Sales. I had some work done on that car, and in the process also had work done on my older Volkswagen Jetta. The work done was fast, affordable and fair, and high quality. I LOVE working with Lewis, Mike and John. Lewis takes the time to show me what needs repaired and how, and he's always been very truthful about what can and can't be done. John is very diligent in getting the repairs right. It's taken a lot of visits and shops to find a place that I trust and respect, and they have won it. I was told many times "we value our reputation," and it's true. They really do. I only wish they were open a little earlier or later to accommodate my 9-5:30 workday schedule and travel time from DC, but otherwise I've had a great experience and intend to keep returning. read more

I can't thank Lewis enough for what he did today. I've had the smell of gasoline in my car for over a week now, so this morning I got so fed up with it and ended up pouring over four gallons of water into the carpet (with dish detergent) as another attempt to get out the smell (I've tried coffee grounds, vinegar, baking soda, another professional company, and nothing has worked). Of course, that ended up being a horrible idea considering how much water I dumped into the car. So, when my car barely made it to Valvoline Express Care (at that point the airbag, seat belt, esp, psp indicator lights were all going off, and it was also hard getting the car to accelerate), Lewis was there to help me. I told him what happened, and even though they're not a cleaning/detailing company, he went out of his way and immediately helped vacuum up the water that was still sitting there on the car floor. He then recommended me the car detailing place he takes his car too, and also suggested I go to the dealer afterwards seeing as they'd be more likely to have the replacements parts I'd need, if the water damage persists. I'm just so thankful for how willing he was to help me, and also how genuine he was. He didn't try to rip me off or anything, he just treated me like a friend, and I can't thank him enough especially being someone who's been through my fair share of poor automobile experiences. Trustworthy auto shop that won't gouge you. My Tahoe needed 100k mile service. According to online tools, parts and labor should have cost anywhere between $800-1200. I received several estimates from auto shops in Falls Church and McLean. The estimates ranged from $800 to $2800 for the same list of items. That's how bad some auto shops will fleece you. Went in and had exceptionally quick service despite it being the middle of the day and they were busy. Told them what I needed (change of headlight and oil) and they said no problem. Promptly took my keys. About 15 minutes later they called me over and said that they couldn't change my headlight because they didn't have a tool to get into it. They had already taken quite a bit of stuff out to get to it, but didn't complain. 5 Minutes later I was done, and there was no labor charge for looking at the headlight. A rare gem among auto mechanics! This shop has always been honest, given me a fair price and did not try to sell me things that I did not need. I worked on cars myself when I had time, so I understand what needs to be done and how it should be done. I have always agreed with what Luis recommended. The people who work here are also kind, polite, and friendly. I brought my car here to get a second opinion after Curry's quoted $2500 for "recommended" work, and none of it was needed. The minor things that needed to be fixed were done at a much lower cost than Curry's, and they even fixed a flat tire on another one of my cars for free.
