If you're looking for a great stylish short haircut, Hannah is the best. I had my hair cut very short in a Pixie style to cut off all my color almost 2 years ago - first cut great - second with same stylist looked like a bowl cut so I started searching for a great stylist again. I found some that were good - but not great. Questions that I had about why my hair was doing certain things - no one knew - then I found Hannah. She is so marvelous and knew the answers to all my questions and was able to work with my hair in a most wonderful way. I'm now in love with my hair (bear in mind my hair is super straight and fine) and have been able to lock her in as my new stylist. Oh I hate doing this but my poor teenager just got BUTCHERED. My child cut her own hair- our normal stylist at paces ferry location was busy so we made an spot at sandy springs with Spencer. When she went in it was just a trim up we needed - but when she was done she has NO HAIR in the front!!!??? How do you chop off someone's bangs so far short that it looks like he literally took her bangs and chopped them off at her FOREHEAD. This is gonna take months to grow out. She is devastated. This is the absolute worst haircut we've ever had in our lives. She did a better job herself with the kitchen scissors. She's been crying for days. Ugh! read more

Avery is phenomenal! She took the time to listen to what I wanted, making sure to repeat back what I said and offering suggestions based on my lifestyle. I haven't had a cut like this in years. We took a before and after picture and I honestly couldn't believe the difference! She's passionate about what she does, but most importantly, she cares about what you want. The entire staff was SO friendly and you can tell the people there like working together. The front of the building is unassuming, but when you walk in, the place is massive and smells amazing! I was so excited to go to this salon bc I've heard such great things about it, I went in to have a cut with color ,I first saw Naomi the colorist we had a consultation and decided it was going to take several sessions to get my hair to the level I was wanting "ash blonde" with dark roots the first day she did the base all was well and I then went to Kenny the stylist he was great and the cut was fab so I go back the NEXT day and NAOMI was suppose to bring my hair up a level or two Nope she took my dark hair from dark brown to platinum blonde in one session I knew then there was going to be breakage I then went to see Kenny to style my hair again and he looked in shock that my hair so platinum and began to style my hair was breaking off while he was styling it looked like cotton and it was floating through the air Kenny had to recut my hair from the previous days cut also I have naturally curly hair and my curls are gone I don't know if it's from the Olaplex or what but my hair is ruined also I paid everything in advance and the desk couldn't figure that out I still was charged 25.00 for a treatment I believed I had paid for already. I will be coming back to Kenny but I have to let Naomi go the price for color was too much for my hair to be still falling out! VERY DISSATISFIED CUSTOMER. read more

Haven't been in a while, but everyone I saw here was fantastic. Sadie's blonde formula was always amazing. Nikki gave the best haircut I've ever had. When I was bartending I handed out so many of Nikki's business cards she should've been paying me! Let me first say that I usually cry after haircuts, especially when my stylist takes off more than two inches. But Gwendolyn is a gem!! I've been coming to Van Michael for years, and I don't remember the last time I felt this great after a haircut! My hair looks so healthy & fabulous (and my hair is shorter now than it's been in years- normally I mourn my losses after, not so this time)! I have never gotten so many compliments on my hair from complete strangers. Gwendolyn really listened to what I wanted but still added her own unique flair to my cut. What's more, I legitimately enjoyed my time in the chair with her- none of the awkward, forced conversations I have endured with stylists elsewhere in the past. I'm surprised at the number of 5-star reviews for this place. A couple of weeks ago, I had my first trip to a Van Michaels salon. The colorist saw fit to lecture me on how my chosen color "just wouldn't work" (yet afterward simpered that it "looked fabulous") -- and only AFTER applying the dye to my hair, asked me to sign a form stating that I had waived a patch test to check for allergies to the dye. The haircut itself was fine. Not the best cut I've ever received, but it wasn't butchered, at least. The staff was distant and disinterested, to the point of being rude. Not skilled for long and thick hair!! I went in for a cut to reduce the puffiness in my long hair Had to go back for a redo since the 1st cut was just not even close to the picture I showed of how my hair was previously cut. They were very friendly and accommodating about the redo but after the 2nd cut, my hair is now shorter, puffier, harder to manage and a very unflattering style. The people are so nice and warm I hate writing this but I feel anyone with long, thick hair would be disappointed at the Van Michaels in Sandy Springs. I am so sad that all I can do is wait for it to grow out and go to a place with more experience please do not make the same mistake. I think it's worth adding that I was a customer of VM for years at another location and they always did a super job. The Sandy Springs location seems to lack the experience and skill that I've known from this establishment. read more

Whenever my eyebrows start to mimic caterpillars that are about to eat my eyes (just a slight exaggeration) I head to Van Michael's to get them cleaned up and manageable. They do a good job of making the caterpillars head back to their cocoons. read more

I checked in at the front desk but somehow my stylist was never notified. After waiting 15-20 minutes I asked about it and apparently my checkin had not been noted. Therefore I was sent into a nightmare experience of getting shampooed, combed out, colored by no less than five people. They forgot to put the glaze on in the process of my going from one person to another and I left with dull flat hair color. When checking out, they asked if I had a good experience and I told them my plight. They were very apologetic and comped my charges. I should go back and let them try again but it's a long drive for me and I think my original stylist (Sienna or Sierra) was miffed thinking I was late. When I told her I'd sat in the reception area for 15-20 minutes after check in, she didn't seem to believe me. It seemed to send her into a frenzy of what on earth to do with me. read more

I highly recommend Laurie Boeyink, stylist at Van Michael. I wanted a new style, and had a photo to work from. I am also a low maintenance, no product kind of girl (not exactly a stylist's favorite), Laurie took lots of time with me, gave me the exact cut I wanted (from a picture), and walked me through all the tricks of styling it myself without products. She was patient, personable, and did a fantastic job. I would recommend her to anyone, especially people looking for a style change! For around $60, you can't get a better shampoo/cut/style. I chose her after reading great reviews about her, but can't find those reviews now, so thought I would put one up. read more

my thoughts on Van Michael are as follows: 1. it is everything you want a salon to be. it is an attractive atmosphere with attractive employees and feels fancy. everybody seems busy and means business. it's like the movie version of a hair salon in real life. 2. the staff is incredibly personable and makes for a fun time at the salon if you find the stylist who suits your personality. i visited 2 dudes (one for cut, one for color) and while their personalities were total opposite they were adorable and pleasant and made me want to come back. 3. the quality of the work is, however, sub-par. i felt like they expected me to know lingo and procedures i would have no way of knowing. i'm an accountant. i want to be blonde but my hair is naturally auburn. i don't know the difference between a partial highlight and a full. i don't know when i need low-lights, but i do know that when i leave there after 3 washings my hair looks brassy and this continues to happen every time i visit...but the guy did the same thing. i also know that the top of my hair had nice evenly placed looking highlights, but never putting in lowlights made the bottom one ugly color that turned brassy and orange 4. when it came to getting my haircut i stated I WANT TO GROW MY HAIR OUT, and every time he gave me the exact same haircut cutting off the exact same amount of length and it took me getting kind of nasty to keep the length and get him to space out my cuts rumor is you can make a lot of money if you follow the van michael program. my thoughts are that i would rather some one take pride in their work than count the dollar signs at the end of my appointment. read more

I had an appointment scheduled and the stylist called out sick. Because I didn't get the message and had to come back they comped the haircut. I would have paid everything as well for the style I got by kiersten she was incredible and I have never loved my hair as much as I love it now. Complimentary neck and scalp massage, beautiful hair and going above and beyond to compensate for a missed call that they did give me to let me know. Nice, I used the new talents since it's less money then using the higher experiance people. I was a few min late so normally I guess they'll give u a tour but didn't have time. they did offer me something to drink. I was then taken back after given gown to put on. After telling my hair dresser (allie) what I wanted she offered head and back message. Then off to get washed then cut. I wanted my hair curled not permed just simply curled ether with curl iron or curlers. Was told that had to be a seperate appointment and seperate money. Didn't relize that but at the end asked if I would like it curled with flatiron wiched worked just as well and my hair ended up looking really cute. Not bad. Enjoyed my hair cut!! Recamend using new talents if u don't want a 50 or higher hair cut which does I would assume just as well. Well hopes this helps.. read more

Daniel is just the BEST!! I've had to deal with hair issues since I was 18 and Daniel has always made me feel special and I always leave happy with my cut. Daniel is one of the few stylist that can cut in a hair piece to work perfectly with your own hair and make it look 100% natural. He's so sweet and very discreet which is so important to me. He understands my challenges and always fits me in even when he's booked. I honestly cannot say enough great things about Daniel. I have had some traumatic hairstyles so therefore I am not expiremental or at all. So when I moved to Atlanta I was terrified to find a new stylist. Thankfully Avery entered my life. She is amazing at what she does. She never rushes a client and books you for extra time if you need it (I do b/c I have a lot of hair and it takes ages to dry). I walked in to set an appointment and asked Jenny Donovan what she would do with my curly hair if she cut it. Boy, she had lots of suggestions, was knowledgeable, helpful and very nice. Nothing like a good first impression when you enter a salon! Then a stylist named Christopher Barrett walked by and I said "I want my hair to look like his" and he promptly told me exactly how to do it, which product to use, how to style it, etc. I IMMEDIATELY bought Be Curly and Flaxseed just based on his recommendation. Can't wait to do what he said in the am and see if the combo of products works for my hair! FINGERS CROSSED!! Lena is the absolute best at hair color! A true expert. I went to her to get my hair highlighted for the first time. I was very nervous and explained to her I wanted a very natural look and she delivered! Pricing was $95 for partial highlights which I thought was really good especially for the quality of work that was done. Came here after a few TRAGIC haircuts at a "highly rated" Buckhead salon. My stylist Dustin awesome! He understood why I hated my hair, fixed it, and was reasonably priced too. The salon is great- a medium/large size, but is sectioned off so it feels very intimate and relaxed, and I did not feel like I was just going down the conveyer belt. If you have textured, kinky/curly hair avoid this salon. My curl pattern/texture was severely altered after visiting this salon, and a year later my hair has not completely recovered. Olaplex was applied to my hair, and either it was misapplied or my hair simply did not respond well to it. To add insult to injury, I told the stylist that I did not want "bone straight" hair and to limit the heat during the flat ironing process, and he chose to do my hair the way he wanted - super straight with excessive heat. This salon does not value feedback, consultation, nor the health of your hair. Simply avoid it. read more

My stylist the first time I went there was Jameson. Went there a year ago to get a few inches taken off since the last time I had cut my hair was in 2010 (I know, it was bad), and I left with my hair in perfect shape! I then bleached the life out of it over the summer and wanted to bring it back to the living, so I booked another appointment a month or so ago. I wanted to get my hair cut about eleven inches to remove all of the bleached/dyed/frayed areas. The stylist, Saul/Sal/Sol something like that, looked at me and nodded as I described to him what I wanted, showed me some pictures, and had me select one. I showed him the one I liked, and he said, "How about something like this?" pointing to a similar one but without layers. I said, "I like that, but my hair is curly so I need layers or it's going to look like a yield sign when it's natural. I need some long layers." So he said okay, washed my hair, and started cutting it. When almost all my hair was on the floor, he said, "By the way, I don't know if this style is going to work on your hair at all, so we're going to have to see how it turns out. You're the guinea pig." AFTER REMOVING MOST OF THE HAIR ON MY HEAD, HE TOLD ME IT WAS PROBABLY NOT GOING TO WORK OUT. Luckily, it turned out fine, and I left pleased enough. What I didn't realize at the time (because it was styled all straight and pretty and sneakily) was that there were ABSOLUTELY NO LAYERS. It was fine for a little while, because it was short enough that I could straighten it in about ten minutes, but it's been about four weeks and it's grown two inches. Now it's puffy, triangular, and hideous, even when I straighten it. So I just called them an hour ago and scheduled a cut for this Friday. This time, I'm pulling an Emma Watson. It's all gone. I've got Jameson again, so hopefully it won't turn out looking like crap like last time with Saul/Sal/Sol whatever his name is. DO NOT GO TO HIM unless you know how to assert yourself while he's cutting your hair, or he won't listen to a word you say. This is the last chance I'm giving them, and if it doesn't pan out then I may as well switch to Great Clips because at least they're upfront about the quality of their cuts and they won't overcharge you for a stylist who can't hear your requests over his ego. He was complaining and cursing the entire time about the radio station to the stylist next to us. Not a fan of this guy, not at all. He was a joke and would have been better off wielding a club like a caveman than a pair of scissors. read more

We used the Buckhead location for my daughter's bridal party. I made the appointments around the stylists that could/would do updos. I paid for updos. The girls arrived at the wedding they did not have updos. (bride, Moh & Mob had hair done on site by different salon) One of the girls told us that they negotiated for a cheaper hair style so they could use the leftover money for professional makeup. When confronted with this info, the salon denied it. The only reason I am writing is because of the Bridal consultant's denial. I have photos.
