Van Van is a hidden gem tucked away in Naples, FL, and it's truly a charming and intimate Cuban cafe that deserves recognition. While the dark ambiance and lighting might not be everyone's cup of tea, the excellent service and delicious food more than make up for it. We started our experience with two cafe cubanos, and they were a delightful way to kick off our Cuban culinary adventure. Rich and robust, they set the stage for what was to come. The star of the show was the chicken churrasco with moros and boiled yuca. The chicken was tender and perfectly seasoned, and the combination with moros (black beans and rice) and boiled yuca was a match made in heaven. The only downside was the yuca being a tad sour, but it didn't overshadow the overall fantastic taste. Speaking of sides, we decided to sample a variety, including yellow rice, black beans, sweet plantains, boiled yuca, and jalapeno bites for our vegan companion. Each side was a burst of flavor in its own right, and it added a lot of variety to our meal. The sweet plantains, in particular, were a delightful sweet contrast to the savory dishes. Last but not least, we tried the shrimp al ajillo with moros and tostones. The flavors were bold, and the combination of the shrimp, moros, and tostones created a memorable dish. The slight sourness and saltiness I mentioned added a unique depth to the flavors, and we found it to be a pleasant surprise. My Husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant last evening. The ropa vieja I had was exactly the way the friendly waiter described, with perfectly roasted beef in savory brown sauce. The fried sweet plantains were terrific. My Husband lechon asado was the star of the evening however. The marinated pork was incredibly tender and savory and yet had been finished on a grill to give it a terrific crispy crust. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside all flavored wonderfully with the tang of the mojo marinade. The sides of black bean and yellow rice were also plentiful and delicious. Afterwards, we received our fancy appetizer tostones rellenos following the recommendation of our server Myriel, and wow that ground beef was just out of this world. The soup was packaged in a tall Styrofoam container with a weak, sloppy lid that broke during delivery. Half the soup ended up in the bag. The Uber driver clearly tried his best, but if your packaging can't survive a normal delivery, that's already a bad sign. What little remained arrived cold. After transferring it to a bowl and reheating it, I discovered the real problem: the broth was swimming in oil. I spent more time skimming grease off the top than I did waiting for the order to arrive. And then there was the salt. This soup was saltier than a fisherman's pants. I managed to eat the chicken, noodles, and egg, but the broth itself was nearly inedible. Had I actually finished the soup, I might have needed a blood pressure monitor afterward. Caldo de gallina is supposed to be comforting, rich, and healing. This was cold, greasy, and overwhelmingly salty. Between the poor packaging and the disappointing quality, this was a complete miss. I should have just cooked at home, but I was feeling lazy. That's on me. Ordering this, however, was the bigger mistake.
