Well I was expecting authentic Cuban sandwich but was very disappointed. Never had a Cuban sandwich with shredded pork and a single slice of ham. Should have been sliced pork and equal parts pork and ham with mustard, pickles and cheese. There was cheese but only 2-3 pickles and couldn't taste the standard yellow mustard. Authentic Cuban food, as far as I know as I have not visited Cuba but can imagine this is exactly how the food would taste. Get any meat here from the Lechon, to the steaks, and try the different appetizers. Sangria was fantastic. Visiting Naples and looked for "the best" Cuban restaurant near the resort. We went to the restaurant and were handed a diner menu - we quickly realized that the dinner menu did not have the Cuban sandwich on it. When are server returned we told him that we are not from Naples, we cam here because of the reviews, and we came because supposedly they have the best Cuban sandwich. He said they would be happy to make us the sandwiches. So first of all, thanks to the server for allowing us to deviate from the dinner menu. Secondly, the reviews were not wrong. Small room big menu friendly staff but just not up to the job. Food was a mishmash of Cuban staples not very tasty and it took forty five minutes to get the order together. I was looking for some place I could walk to from the Hampton inn and saw this place on Yelp and being a fan of all sorts of Latin cuisine decided to try it. Even before I looked at the rating. Walked past Andre's steak House on the way and it smelled amazing, but according to yelp's $$$$ it's outside of my work per diem, and I had my eye on van van already. Place was pretty empty save for 3-4 tables of people. They all looked pleased. Nice enough looking place. Ordered the tostones rellenos with beef. They were amazing. Little hot sauce on the side. I was going to eat a few and take the rest back to the hotel fridge for post bulliet bourbon noshing but I couldn't stop eating the crunchy little cups of deliciousness. I had originally set out to try the churrasco salad, but after asking for one of everything and getting a "your kidding right bro" look, and discussion with the server (who I later learned owns they place with his sister) I decided against his Lechon asado recommendation and got the masitas de puerco with sweet plantains and fried yuca. OMFG was it good. The entree WAS $24 and was a small dish of maybe 5-6 chunks of crispy but tender pork. But. It. Was. Amazing. Grilled onions on top. More hot sauce. Chopped the yuca up and chucked it in the pork bowl to sop up all those juices. I may have been eating it in an untraditional way but I wanted to get it in my mouth hole asap. The sweet plantains served as dessert. I REALLY wanted to try the tres leches cake as it is about my all time favorite... But in an attempt to please my AME I went with a shot of Cuban coffee instead. I think I might stop on the way to work tomrw and get the Lechon for lunch to eat at the airport. Or the salad. Maybe both, screw it. Guess they've only been open a month or so, and some other people have complained about the price, but the food was amazing and I didn't leave feeling stuffed so the portion size was great. We ended up trying this place after we couldn't get into our first choice restaurant. The food is so good. The lechon asado was cooked perfectly. Tender yet slightly crispy on one side and bursting with flavor. The moros was okay. You can't go wrong with fried sweet plantains. I usually don't review a place after the first visit, but I want to for the fact that the service here was top notch. It was a quiet night for Sunday, but it was my older brothers birthday and he was visiting. I wanted to bring him here since it is new and also because I read in the paper that the chef has quite the resume. The food here is awesome along with the drinks. Going back to my brothers bday. Basically it was a was a surprise for both him and the staff. The young man who was our waiter along with the rest of the staff played a birthday tune and got us a lava cake with a scoop of ice cream and a candle. It was an excellent put together surprise for my brother who had no idea about it. I give great credit to the staff for it with zero notice to put that together and I thank you for helping. Can't wait to return for lunch since dinner was excellent. Update: I would just like to point out how fucked up Yelp is for throttling the reviews on this place. 1 month ago there were 4 other reviews here. Now I see 2. One being some bitch boy crying about pricing which is pathetic bc the prices are fine. Never depend on Yelp as the go to reviews. Use at least 2 or 3 other websites to make a decision. This is a very good Cuban restaurant. I had the Churasco, and it was excellent...nice and flat, very tender, and seasoned perfectly. My only complaint would be dessert. I ordered the chocolate lava cake which was dry and had no lava. My husband ordered the benuelo's which was like a tasteless pretzel soaked in Karo syrup. We ate there for the first time last night and everything was delicious. Mojitos were excellent. Our appetizer was the Van Van strips and the pork was out of this world. The service was very good, but the place is small, the decor is lacking, cleanliness was about average...but the prices were through the roof. I mean, this place is expensive and the food is just meh. I actually don't think this restaurant could survive back in Miami, where there are dozens of Cuban restaurants with much better food and far more reasonable prices. I was really looking forward to trying this place before it opened recently. The food is good, no doubt. The prices, however, are astronomical for what you get. It's like hotel prices without a room! Ouch! I mean, rice and beans, is rice and beans. It doesn't matter if it has liquid gold in it, it is still rice & beans. Generally speaking, if the food is good, people will come back for more. If the pricres are astronomical, they won't. Its that simple. I am from Miami, and I am not even comparing Van Van to Miami. They would survive with their prices. I can appreciate the sacrifice it takes to open up a restautant. But if there is an expectation that you pay $12 to $13 (high side) for a plate of ropa vieja, and all of a sudden you are faced with $18 to $24, that's a problem. This is Cuban soul food. Hey it's a business, but they would be better off making profit off of volume. Naples is seasonal. The off season, at those prices, they'll be hardpressed to survive. I wish them well. The food is tasty good, but I won't be back at thier current prices. The food is simply overpriced. read more
