This place needs a major overhaul. The ambience is outdated and comes with a grease, old musty smell. The owner needs to invest in remodeling the outside and inside. From the outside, you have to know from the community that the location is open. The hashbrown and bacon drips from deep fried grease? As a table, we had cheese eggs, bacon? Waffle,toast. I remember having meals here years ago before they closed. The turn off Warwick comes up quickly however you have plenty of parking right out front. It had a rather dated interior but I also remember the good prices for basic food offerings. It was a no pretense place, a change from the chains with a formulaic interior, just OK food, not so great service and pricy. I recently stopped in and nothing has changed inside and lucky for us the price is still more than fair. This is "diner food", not trendy or fancy but comforting. My cost for my veal parmasean dinner, carrot cake and a soft drink in cash was $20.22 sans the tip, and that is a good price these days. Service was attentive and polite and that is hard to come by these days. I like to support locally owned businesses, and now they they reopened it looks like I will pay them a visit again, especially for Breakfast where they seem to have a strong following. read more

I eat here a couple time a week. As a travel surgical assistant my schedule is insane and to find a restaurant that has that home cooked feel to it is a WIN. I recommend them highly. Well, when I moved to the area, several locals raved about this place. So, I have been to try it at least three times. Each time, the food quality went down and the service became less and less attentive. The biggest problem... IT'S OLD and DINGY! Seriously, it's a restaurant that looks like the 60s-70s is still a thing in design culture. I wish the owners would spend money updating things and remodeling. To me, and a lot of younger diners, this place scares us to eat at, because it's dark, dated, and smells funny. Overall, the food tastes like everything comes from the freezer and is prepared without love or passion. 4 Stars because of our waitress. She was very patient and kind while we ordered. I ordered an omelette and asked for two eggs vice three, with tomatoes, green peppers and feta cheese. My mother ordered biscuits and gravy and a side order of an egg and bacon. I have to say, their biscuits and gravy hit the spot. Much better than the last breakfast place we stopped into the day before. When my omelette came out wrong, she was telling me not to apologize and that she would fix it. As she was telling the cook, "what did my ticket say", another waitress was stating that it happened multiple times that day. Waitress were very frustrated with the kitchen. When the kitchen makes mistakes, it affects their tips. For most, this is a known fact. Others may not be aware of. Anyway, When my omelette came out the 2nd time, it was right. We are a family of 5, three of which are our growing sons who consume a ton of food and it's getting super expensive to go out these days. Our boys don't eat off the children's menu anymore. So $53.61to feed 5 people is pretty freaking good! The Calzone was so freaking amazing!!!!!! It is so huge and perfect! It's pretty perfect! Ordered the spaghetti! Pretty decent. Meat sauce. Huge portion! Got a Philly cheese steak. But ordered it with grilled onions, mushrooms and peppers and without lettuce, tomato and mayo. Equals soft and I mean so soft Philly that just melted in our mouths. Lots of fighting between the boys in hopes of someone not finishing it. The burgers were good. Nothing spectacular. Vancostas is back! They found some new staff and brought back Billy, who seems to be the new manager! Yes, Moe and Steph are still the owners. The food is as good as ever. If anything, letting Billy move up seems to have expanded the menu a little. New dishes keep popping up based on whatever is in season. Always check the specials board and ask the server what's new. New dishes seem to rotate, so if it looks good grab it while you can! Last time I went everyone was raving about the meat loaf, but I'm more into the grilled fish and potato wedges. The interior hasn't really changed. A few things have been patched up, but the age of the building definitely shows. Ignore the 1950's bathroom and focus on the cheap and tasty food. Ok, so this place reopened, I really wanted to like this place but I just had an experience from hell!! I ordered a country steak breakfast, no problem there but the potatoes weren't cooked well. My wife ordered French toast. She specifically asked that it was done light cause she can't stand the taste of burnt eggs on French toast. It comes out, burnt, dark, and disgusting to her. We asked them to please recook it and not over cook it this time, while she was back dealing with the cook, who refused to do it cause he said that would mean the eggs would be raw.... (We do this all over the place, with no problem) but then I see something troubling in my waffle , a pubic hair, I go to looking , like there is no way that's what I think it is..... I go to pull it out (it was baked inside the waffle) and it PLUCKED out because it was cooked in. I was completely disgusted. We asked for someone to please come help, we got a guy, I think he was the owner, first he didn't even go to the right table , started asking a different table about there French Toast, I am like, sir we are over here, when I show him the hair he was like oh that's just egg, happens all the time, his attitude about it was the worst! I could see when he realized (oh that's a root for the hair) but by then we were so disgusted we wanted to leave. Other than that, the biscuit for the biscuits and gravy was laughable in size, and eggs were over cooked. Never ever going back there again! Now, if you can set the ambiance aside for a moment, you're gonna dig what's cookin'! Wait, the Rock is here too? That's crazy!! The Old Timer who runs the joint is beyond nice, and they make a mean calzone. I can't attest to any other item on the menu yet, but I suspect I'll be diggin' other items just as much. In terms of décor (what décor?!), this restaurant could use some serious help and a serious case of updating. 1981 has left the building, but you wouldn't know it from the inside. Our server was friendly but a poor listener, and I had to repeat certain parts of my order several times in order to get what I asked for. I ordered a fried shrimp meal, which came with salad (simple but fresh and tasty enough) and fries, and it was ordinary, painless, and fine. My partner ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato on it, and said that it was just fine. For a price roughly comparable to McDonald's and other fast food places, Vancosta's offers fresher food and bigger portions. A great dining experience? Definitely not. A safe bet for a basic lunch? Sure, Vancostas has never been updated to match the 21st century, but why does it matter? I've grown up on this place's pizza but had never been inside. We decided to go in (20 minutes past breakfast damn!) and enjoy a childhood classic. Our server, Charlotte, was sweet and attentive. She made jokes with our table and made us feel welcome without feeling overbearing. Our food was perfect and was very clearly fresh made. Maybe I'm biased, but I love this place's pizza. The dough is great, crisp but soft and doughy at the same time. The prices are unbeatable, and at that price point + the over saturation of chain restaurants in our city, cut them some slack for the decor!! This restaurant has so much much potential but fails in every category.When you walk in your immediately greeted by a very strong foul odor the restaurant was old and out dated.The sever was friendly but did not know anything about the menu and constantly had to ask other staff members questions regarding the menu.The food is mediocre at best a side salad is simple a bed of iceberg lettuce with a plethora of onions and a few tomatoes. Diner, diner, diner! This was my spot when I lived in Newport News. The staff was very personable, the food was hot and it was rather inexpensive. This wasn't highest quality food, but it's light-years ahead of the surrounding dining establishments (not the decor though, because it's rather behind the times). Vancostas would be a very popular place in a bigger city, but it's stuck in the middle of the strip-mall hell that is Warwick Blvd. It had a jukebox, vinyl seats, quarter candy machines at the door and open faced roast beef sandwiches. I preferred to get the gyro because they put pepperoncini peppers on it. That was killer. I think they had an all you can eat pizza deal on Monday's, but I would call before showing up, just to make sure. read more
