On a recent visit with friends, we were all very impressed with the continuing development along the Columbia River. There are many great restaurants here and lots of features to explore. It was a warm night when we were there so we saw tons of people, families and children having a great time. Some playing in the water feature, others relaxing on the grassy areas between the walkways. My favorite feature was the iconic, cable-stayed Grant Street Pier that juts out over the river (see photo). Trust...

A nice lovely place to go for a brisk walk and enjoy the view into Portland from Vancouver. The walk is nice although rather short. It is rather pricey to go here since you must pay for parking. There's a good assortment of restaurants/bars to enjoy if you're on a date.

The Vancouver Waterfront is fantastic! If only Portland would take notice and realize that they could do the same. When you contrast the two waterfronts, there is no comparison. Vancouver is leaps and bounds better - clean, no tents and homeless and drugs. Just a wide, clean, well lit path along the water with clean restrooms, green space, and lots of restaurants, tasting rooms and cocktail lounges to enjoy. Many condos, parks and trails Also line this area. Having lived in Portland for 22 years, I've seen the massive decline that lack of leadership creates. I had never really spent time in Vancouver, only going there to visit friends who moved there 7 years ago when Portland first started to decline. I teased them about living in "Vantucky" and how there was nothing worth visiting in Vancouver other than them. Flash forward 7 years and I'm eating my words. When friends and I want a nice meal with a gorgeous view, in a place where we feel safe parking and walking and don't want to be surrounded by tents, filth and graffiti, we head to Vancouver. Which means, I frequent those restaurants more than the ones in Portland these days. Parking is cheapest on the street where you only have to pay the meter until 6pm, use the Parking Kitty app for convenience. If no street parking, use the lots where you have to pay for all hours and they ticket if you are even five minutes late. So don't try to beat paying the parking or you will pay far more in a ticket. The Vancouver Waterfront is an example of what can be accomplished And how to create usability of prime real estate for all to enjoy. This area has contributed to the city's growth, jobs, tourism and is a gateway to Vancouver and the rest of Washington.

On the north bank of the Columbia River, is Vancouver's waterfront development that brings the downtown to the river's edge. The focal point of this area is the cable-stayed pier and magnificent water feature. The park incorporates areas for picnics, biking, riverfront access, walking trails, a water feature and an expansive greenspace. Its scattered with beautiful restaurants and apartments and provides a very modern yet scenic appeal . To say I absolutely love seeing the sunsets here would be an understatement . No matter what time of the day , the waterfront is always lively -there is live music , kids playing , lots of people hanging out in the area , I have even seen a proposal or two on the pier. It is open to the public from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m and there are no fees. There is a huge parking lot right across the street and also metered street parking.

The waterfront and pier area is a great spot for a short walk, dining, and hanging out. The views, especially at night, are simply amazing. There are plenty of shops and restaurants to explore, and the area is very clean and modern. The paved roads make for an easy stroll, and there are some great wineries nearby to enjoy as well.

As a (former) lifelong resident of Vancouver, I was pretty skeptical of the waterfront project when they first announced it. Before I knew it, buildings began to spring up and to life all down the renovated strip of riverfront real estate, and I had to check it out. Downtown Vancouver had been struggling for decades, and several prominent local businesses and enterprises (The Holland restaurant, Lucky Brewery, etc) had faded away into memory, and urban decay had begun to set in. The area around Esther Short gentrified, but it seemed as if that momentum was lost, since nothing else of significance had happened for quite some time. Then the Waterfront project happened, and for once, there's hope of true transformation to modernity in Vancouver, and that is a welcome change! There are some truly fabulous restaurants, wine tasting rooms, parks, walks and trails here. I've reviewed several individually, so I won't expand on them here, but as a communal and commercial space as a whole, the Vancouver Waterfront is exactly what this town needed. Modernity. Relevancy. Sophistication. Fun. Worth a visit just to see what's new, what's going on, and what's yet to come, as things continue to grow and expand. The gateway to Washington State on the I-5 corridor (and one of the few border crossings of significance in the state) has needed this for quite some time. Finally, we have something to show off!

But I can't honestly tell you that. The truth is, I chose to stand there on principle. I had absolutely no intention of swimming, using the slides, or taking advantage of any of the attractions. I simply wanted to spend the day with my grandsons, watching them laugh and making memories together. Instead, I was expected to pay approximately $40 simply to walk through the gate and be with my family. I understand that every business has the right to set its own admission policies, and I respect that. But I also have the right to decide when a policy simply doesn't make sense. So, for four hours, I stood just inside the front entrance near the front door while my grandsons enjoyed the park--not because I had to, but because I couldn't justify paying full admission for services I never intended to use. My hope is that Wings & Waves will reconsider this policy. A reasonably priced spectator pass for grandparents, parents, caregivers, or anyone who simply wants to accompany their family without participating would make the park far more welcoming to families. I truly hope no other grandparent has to make the same choice I did.

I love how this park is integrated with the surrounding businesses - you'll find restaurants, shops, and other amenities around the waterfront, so it's definitely a place you can spend half a day or more wandering around. The best part of this park is Grant Street Pier, which is a huge pier that pokes out of the ground like a sun dial, or much better, the billow of a passing sailboat. It's a great place to take photos! As a bonus, the pier has educational diagrams about bridges and piers etched into the metal as a little learning experience. Sometimes the city shuts down the road that is adjacent to this park. I asked one of the restaurant workers why, and apparently sometimes people will purposely park and rev their engines and cause noise pollution, so the city is trying to nip this in the bud and make sure this park is enjoyable for all.

Five Stars for Doing a Waterfront Right…read more Over the last five or six years, I've had the pleasure of watching the Vancouver Waterfront transform from an older stretch along the Columbia into one of the nicest waterfronts in the Pacific Northwest. It wasn't bad before it just needed a little facelift. Well... they didn't give it a facelift. They gave it a whole new body. Every time I come back, there's something new. Old buildings are gone, beautiful restaurants have taken their place, modern apartments overlook the river, wide walking paths stretch for miles, fountains splash in the sunshine, and everything feels fresh, clean, and alive. Then there's the atmosphere. Kids are running through the fountains like they own the place. Couples are holding hands pretending they don't notice they're getting their daily steps in. Friends are laughing over coffee, people are walking their dogs, and everyone just seems... happy. It's one of those rare places where you can't help but smile. Even people-watching deserves five stars. Speaking of five stars... Five stars for being unbelievably clean. Five stars for the modern design. Five stars for creating a place where people actually want to spend time outside. Portland, I love you... but maybe sneak across the river and take some notes. Vancouver is showing everyone how it's done. If you're looking for a nice date night, this is your spot. Grab dinner, watch the sunset over the Columbia River, and enjoy the bridges lighting up across the water. Just one tip: if you're driving, keep your eyes peeled for the parking garage sign. It's mounted so high I thought they were directing airplanes instead of cars. One of my favorite things is how easy it is to turn this into an adventure. You can stroll the waterfront, head toward Fort Vancouver, wander through Officer's Row, and loop back for a relaxing seven- or eight-mile walk. Not feeling that ambitious? No problem. Cut it short and make it a three- or four-mile loop. Either way, you're getting incredible scenery every step of the way. The Saturday market is fantastic too, but honestly, any day is a good day to come here. Whether you're looking for exercise, a romantic evening, a family outing, or just a peaceful place to clear your head, the Vancouver Waterfront delivers. It's clean. It's beautiful. It's welcoming. And every visit reminds me that sometimes the best thing a city can do is build a place where people simply enjoy being together.

I'm not really rating Cascade AC on the whole in this review but rather their policy or lack…read morethereof. I enjoy swimming and Cascade has the best pool in the area so participation here is a matter of limited selection. My problem is the lack of policy/signs/refereeing something that keeps inconsiderate lane swimmers in line. Cascade has no posted policy or signs that direct how people should behave when there are others waiting for a lane. Since there are numerous older adults that seem to have developed blindness because they don't 'see' people waiting nor do they ask anyone. Instead, they see someone getting out of the pool and head directly to the lane that just opened up simply not caring that others are waiting. Most people seem to want to avoid conflict so nothing gets said empowering those who are already feel privileged enough to just jump in. Then there's me. I will say something and I might not be nice about it because your rudeness put you in my path. So, lane cutters if you can't turn to those waiting and ask then expect to get called out or for me to jump in 'your' lane. I simply won't stand for your rude behavior or whatever excuse you have for being like you are. As for Cascade - this on you. You have no policy, no guidance and no monitoring leaving us adults to police themselves. Fortunately, most do an exceptional job of policing themselves and have decency and courtesy. However, there are some that don't possess decency and probably have limited self-control when confronted about their behavior that could lead to an altercation between parties. If this were to happen to me you can bet that I would seeing you in court... And, while you are pondering this matter please scrub the pool! It's filthy. The walls and floor of the pool are coated in brown slime that cause slip when trying to push off. P.S. this also applies to those that are in a lane and invite someone that just shows up to join them instead of the next person in line as it should be. Friends don't get a free pass to the head of the line.
