I forgot why I stopped going here. I won't forget again. When I arrived I asked if I would be done by 3, she said yes. I also asked how much my services would be, I was quoted $60/65. My wait time was short. At the bowl the lady shampooing my hair asked if I wanted a deep conditioner. I told her yes initially, she told me it'd be an extra $10 I said ok. I look at the time a realized I didn't have enough time to do the deep conditioner, she said ok. She proceeded to do what I assumed was a regular conditioner and detangle (I'm natural this was also VERY visible when I entered the salon) I was told to sit in another chair (with conditioner in my hair) she began washing someone else then after speaking with her coworker decided to rinse my hair out. For some reason my hair got blowdried instead of set on rollers. I go up to the desk to pay and the owner says "oh you got a deep conditioner too right" I explained to her what happens and she says ok. She then proceeded to tell me that my services came up to $80, a $15-$20 hike SUDDENLY. When I asked why is it something different than what I was quoted, and she told me it was due to my hair needing to be detangled. When I asked if they could tell me that the deep conditioner was an added service why didn't they mention the added detangling fee, she responded with the total again saying my hair was really tangled. The detangling process took all of 15 mins ( I KEEEP my hair pressed, I'm a "straight natural"). I wouldn't spend another copper red cent here. I'm also terrified I have heat damage now because of the amount times she passed the flat iron over my hair. I need to edit this and say that my scalp is still dirty but according to the owner my scalp is dry. Save yourself and save your coins. read more

Beware if You Have Type 3c - 4c Hair - Especially 4C I had an incredibly disappointing and heartbreaking experience at Vanessa's Salon. If you have Type 3 or 4 hair particularly 4C please proceed with caution. I went in with a full head of healthy, shoulder-length hair. I had just taken out braids and detangled my hair before my appointment. Despite that, the stylist handled my hair with little to no care during the shampoo and conditioning process. It became painfully clear that they were not trained or equipped to properly manage 4C hair textures. By the time my appointment ended, I was in tears. I went in with thick, healthy hair and left with thin, broken strands and see-through ends. Damaged to the point where I will now have to go back to a pixie cut. To make matters worse, I didn't even receive a style that involved direct heat just a roller set under a dryer. So there is no reason my hair should have sustained this level of damage. When I brought up my concerns to the owner, instead of offering an apology or trying to make it right, she told me my hair was already broken when I arrived. That was simply not true. My regular stylist, who has helped me grow my hair out from a pixie cut over the past four years, can vouch for the condition my hair was in before I walked into this salon. The only reason I came here was because my usual stylist was unavailable. To be dismissed, insulted, and told to leave the salon because I voiced my frustration was incredibly unprofessional. Hearing the owner insult me in Spanish on top of everything else only made the experience worse. This salon does not prioritize the health of your hair, nor does it have the skill or care to manage natural textures. Please save yourself the trauma and go somewhere that respects and understands your hair type. Worst decision I've made for my hair. I'll never return--and I hope you don't either. read more

At first i thought i was having PP hair loss for the longest bc my hair was shedding like a snakes skin it became so fragile that if i were to just comb thru my hair it'd fall out. I also had chucks of hair missing as if i cut it off. I only went once a month maybe twice but I have now found out that there is PERM IN THE SHAMPOO. First of all the name of the place is Vanessa so that's one star off top. Any who, I'm visiting New Orleans and my hair was rained on so I needed somewhere quickly. I was told this place was a gem. When I arrived it was in the semi hood. It was very small. The people were so sweet. At first I wanted a wet set. The lady told me 45 and that's pretty decent. She did a great job shampooing my hair. Now a couple of reviews mentioned relaxer. If my curls don't return I'll update the post. There was no burning and I smelled my hair and it didn't smell like it. She was gently with my hair. My deep conditioning was awesome. So I'm under the dryer and I asked how long for the wet set. She said 2 hours at least... I said no thank you. She did a flat iron instead. That dryer is too hot. It burned my scalp but the style was great and I was able to pin curl. Will definitely come to this shop for Mardi Gras if I come read more

After getting my hair done and it frizzing after two days, I'm highly disappointed. I went back to the salon and gave the unprofessional owner "Vanessa" a chance to fix my hair. That went astray when she took every customer before me and had me wait for 4 hours. I finally left when I realized that she really wasn't going to fix my hair. So let me start off by saying they are the BEST at what they do! I really enjoy getting my hair done by them! I love how they do scratch your scalp when washing it. They actually take their time. If your big on heat, its a lot of heat on your hair. The price is very reasonable. They amount you spend at another salon, you could go by the Dominicans at pay to get 2 people hair done. They don't stop and watch TV and take breaks. Amazing! I'm not a fan of getting my hair done like that. I prefer to get braid or double strand twist. They are such nice people. I don't know what the difference is between a regular blowout and a Dominican blowout. So, if you thought I would answer that for you, sorry, I'm not that enlightened with answers of the universe. What I do know is that Vanessa's has Dominicans who do blowouts. And they are AMAZING! If you know me, you know I can change my hairstyle like other people change their shoes. Very very often. I have what some might call an addiction to weave and hair commitment issues. I'm always looking to switch it up. In between those times, when I need to let my hair breathe, I lovvvvvvve a good Domincan blowout. Vanessa's doesn't take appointments so you just show up and put your name on the list. Depending on the day and time of day, you might get right into the chair, or you may just have a few people ahead of you making it an hour wait. It really all depends. But, I have never regretted waiting before. When you leave, no doubt you'll have soft, straight, silky hair that is worth way more than the $30 and short wait time. BONUS: They give amazing shampoo. Just moved to the New Orleans area and needed a hair salon ASAP. I like Dominican hair salons because of their blow drying techniques. I finally found this one after much internet research. The shop itself isn't much to look at but the people are friendly. They speak mostly Spanish and some english. Once you tell them what you want their hands are working their magic. Vanessa (the owner) greeted me and also took care of me. When she washed my hair I felt like I was in heaven. Her fingertips message every inch of my scalp. The specialty here is a roller set. Your hair is washed, put into rollers, under the dryer, blown out straight, then flat ironed! Your left with beautiful straight free flowing hair. If your a women of color and do not want to put chemicals in your hair to straighten it then tis is a great option for you. read more

Highlights: The ladies were very nice and friendly and the service was a really good price. They move quickly and make sure you're happy with your service. Your hair will be extremely straight. Cons: i just washed it and I have heat damage. My curls are way looser and some part of it is almost straight. I heard that you have to use a neutralizer shampoo to make your curls revert back so maybe I should try that. My hair had a burnt smell to it after I got done and the lady did so many heat passes on my hair. I know not everyone has this experience. Maybe it's just my hair. I visited this salon back in Feb 2020 for a silk press and long story short, my natural hair was no more. I had to start completely over after 5 years of natural growth. My heart was broken. Service has gone down. I haven't been here for a while, but it was a lot worse than I remembered. I spent over 4 hours in the salon for a simple wash; condition, and blow dry. I arrive around 220 and am seated for a wash about 20 minutes after arrival. So far so good. They put a dab of shampoo on my hair without massage and sat me under the dryer for 30 minutes. The timer ends and I sit there for an additional 30 minutes under no heat until someone takes me for the "real" shampoo and conditioning. I then sit under the dryer with conditioner for another hour. An additional 40 minutes pass before anyone even checks on the status of my hair. They rinse the conditioner and lead me to a chair for the blow out. Things seem to finally be starting to move, except no . . They forgot about another client who was ahead of me. I'm asked to sit in the waiting area with my hair soaking wet, no heating cap - no nothing, as water drips down my shirt for an additional 40 minutes while they work on another client. At this point I almost walked out with wet hair. Long story short I got there at 2:20, they didn't even start blow drying my hair until 5:30. I didn't leave the salon until a quarter to 7. Most of that time was spent waiting for someone to be available for the next. If you value your time at all, go elsewhere. I definitely understand that things can get busy, but a more professional place would place you on a waitlist or call you back when they were ready for you. I've worked so hard on my hair to restore my natural curl pattern. My fro was EVERYTHING, healthy, full and thick! After one straightening appointment at this salon my hair was severely heat damaged!!!! I will not lie, my hair had never been so straight in this New Orleans humidity. Great Dominican Hair Salon to go if you're in a bind and need your hair blown out without an appointment. Cheap too. About $35 for a typical wash, set, blow out, flat iron. Know the rules: first come, first served. On Saturdays this means showing up 30 mins to an hour before the salon opens to get your name on the sign up sheet. Leave and come back when they open or bring something to do in your car. If you want to get out quicker, skip the roller set. Some people show up with their hair already washed and just get their hair blown out. I don't know if it's cheaper, but it could save you time since you won't have to wait for the wash bowl (they only have two). read more

Today was my first visit to this salon after several recommendations over the past couple of years. I wish I would have visited sooner as I have been sleeping on this (hidden) gem. My service was phenomenal. I arrived at approximately 9:10, thinking there would be a wait but to my surprise, they don't open until 9:30 during the week and 9 on Fridays Saturdays. Anyhoot, I signed in at the front desk and had a seat. I was called back about 10 minutes after signing in as the ladies were prepping the service area. I had an awesome scalp scrub/ wash. The ladies were courteous. I walked out at EXACTLY 1038 and that was after paying!! Although my service was fast, it was not rushed. I will DEFINITELY be back along with my daughter. read more

The people at Vanessa's were really nice! The shop was clean and service was fast! I'm giving them two stars because they are extremely rough on hair. I have really coarse natural hair and I don't feel that they know how to properly care for my type of hair. I was in pain from the moment I sat in the chair. I wouldn't recommend this place to naturals that take good care of their hair. They use a LOT of heat! My scalp was burned constantly and even though I complained they never attempted to adjust the heat or rough manner in which they handled my hair. I will say my hair was beautiful when it was finished! Unfortunately when I washed my hair I had severe heat damage...weird considering the fact that I have really coarse hair. Some strands lack a curl pattern completely as if I had a relaxer. My hair also shed a whole lot and is still continuing to shed. I will never return. I've learned to go to professional, natural hairstylists that will care for my hair. I rather pay a little more for my hair to stay healthy, than pay cheap and have my hair ruined. If you're a person that doesn't wear your natural hair and prefer to have it straightened I believe Vanessa's is a great salon. Let me just say my blow out was bomb... However, my hair is ruined! Hand fulls of my hair came out when I washed it and I have heat damage some parts of my hair is straight and will not curl. If you love your natural hair and curl pattern DON'T DO IT. I visited the salon for the fist time on a Saturday around 1 in the afternoon not knowing what to expect. There are no appointments and you walk in sign your name on a sheet and wait. There were 6 hairdressers working. everyone that walked out hair looked amazing. I saw blowouts mostly but also some weaves were being sewn in. Yes, I waited a long time but it was worth the wait. for the next visit If you go on a Saturday get their early before they are open at 9:30 sign your name up and then come back to be seen . (if you want to be done early) there's no price list. they base the price on your hair texture and length. I will definitely return now that I know "the rules". they are closed Mondays and closed at 5:30 pm weekdays. read more

I would not recommend for anyone who is natural to go here. I got my hair blown out and straighten . This was my first time having my hair straighten in 3 years. They were very rough and I felt like I had more hair in the brush and on the floor but I thought I just may be too critical. Well I wasn't, I washed my hair yesterday after having it straighten for a week and I have severe heat damage! I deep conditioned 3 times and nothing has worked!! I'm natural and my hair was about 2 or 3 inches from touching my waist when it was flat ironed, well that was before I visited the salon. I am a former cosmetologist and new mom so i went to the salon twice when I didn't have time to do it myself.... big mistake. I brought my own shampoo and conditioner each time, but both times they still used their own products along with with I brought. Both times they left a product in my hair for minutes and then unnecessarily shampooed my hair several times.... similar to what is done after a relaxer. My hair didn't have the same smell that it normally has after I shampoo with the shampoo that I brought and the texture was completely different. Each time I went I asked the stylist if a chemical was used on my hair because I noticed a change in texture, but I was told "no". The first time I went I noticed that my hair was abnormally straight, even after being in extremely humid weather or near steam. I also noticed that when I ran my fingers through my hair the strands would be stuck together. I googled and tried to figure out what kind of "sticky" products could have been placed on my hair but I didn't have any luck. After I decided to wash my hair two weeks later, the sticky substance cause it to mat up and I didn't have time or patience to do it myself (big mistake) so I went back to the salon. The stylist made me feel extremely uncomfortable by continuously talking about my hair being tangled.... even though it was because of their prior service. When the stylist was done blow drying she asked if I wanted a hair trim... I asked her how much would she cut and she said "very little" while demonstrating about 1/2 an inch. After the cut She pin curled my hair and I don't notice that a significant amount of my hair was cut. I realized that my hair was no longer as long as it previously was... it was now a few inches past my shoulders. A friend previously warned me about visiting this salon because of the excessive heat that is used during the services, but I didn't listen now I wish that I did. read more

I booked an appointment via telephone and left a message and was contacted back by the owner Vanessa. Not once did she mention prices have gone up due to the corona virus! And once I arrived on 07/17/2020 she did not say prices have increased. My hair is shoulder length and prior to the pandemic I always paid $35 and if trimming is needed than an additional $10 so $45. While rendering payment she told me it was $45 for a blow out while pointing to a sign that says blow outs start from $40-80. So I asked her why not additional $5 instead of $10 as my hair is not a difficult texture and has a normal length that they are used to doing and no ends were trimmed. She then placed the blame on the stylist(Esperanza) although she is the owner and has the final say. Not to mention a customer prior complained that she was not made aware by the owner's sister that the salon's conditioner from the owner if $5 more and the customer stated it was her first time there. All in all I told her that I would not be back because she is not making her customers(and existing customers) aware of her inflation increase and waits until you have received services. It seems as though due to the pandemic she is trying to secure previous monies she has missed out on prior trying to recover monies previous lost. However, that does not mean that the owner should use trickery and be dishonest. I advise all to request pricing via telephone once she calls back to schedule you and if she says that she has to see the length of hair once you arrive ask upfront how much it is going to be prior to receiving service!
