This place is incredible so few places left like this on earth. A woman opened it by herself years ago gorgeous cakes in the front also makes homemade cookies, etc. a lot of the stuff. Of course I was unfamiliar with because I think it's specific to her culture. She had all these insanely gorgeous cake toppers like any event you ever had. You could get something beautiful and very unique there for it. I wish I had a Celebration for them! We got a fruit tart 12 inch. Didn't know the bakery was so popular until I saw the reviews. Judging by the reviews, this place seems like it's a staple of the surrounding neighborhoods. I hate to do this but I'm going to have to give it a 3 based on my ice cream cake. It was 90% ice cream and 10% icing/whip cream--not what i consider a cake. We a strawberry cake so, essentially it was a block of strawberry ice cream. Nothing good or bad about it. I want to come back and try a normal cake. I'm sure it'll be a lot better. They have different flavors you can choose from: Vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, durian, pandan, and ube. They can also write a message on the cake when you buy them. I have gotten ice cream cakes here a few times and they've been good so far. The strawberry was good. The ube was unique. It was good and tasted like a taro boba in ice cream form. It could get a bit overwhelming after a while so it's good for sharing. The frosting was okay, not bad but not the best I've had. The price was $30 for a 6 inch cake. We've been going to this place for cakes (specifically pandan, strawberry, and fruit tarts) since I was a child. My grandma loves the pandan/coconut cake they sell! - I won't lie, the place is a bit dusty and a portion of the store isn't used (mostly used for storage). - The owners were always nice to us with our orders, although sometimes it's hard to communicate with the language barrier. As beautiful as their cakes are, sometimes they are old. There was a time, a few years ago, where we bought a fruit cake for my sister's graduation and it had moldy strawberries. However, that was the only time it came like that. Some of their pastries are a little hard depending on the time you get them (whether they were made recently or not). This place is not of the quality of the other family location on Brookhurst. The tart cakes (pies) here are still really good (8" -$38.00). I try to get the pate chaud often but they are usually cold and old, even when you ask if they were freshly made (she lies). Again, I drive over to Brookhurst now most of the time unfortunately. I love this family owned bakery. Their strawberry cake is so moist and fluffy. It's not too sweet and the whip cream is light flavorful without being too over powering. We always get their cakes for birthday parties and celebrations. They do wedding cakes too! The store owner and his wife are so friendly and kind. They always greet us with a smile. I've also ordered their fruit tart cake and that too is a family favorite. I can never find good macaroons that aren't 5 or more dollars each. UNTIL i found Van's Bakery. They have such a wide variety of choices i felt overwhelmed haha. Although we used to have Van's cake a lot of times before, this was my first time coming into this location, which was located closer to the corner of Harbor and Garden Grove. We went for a last-minute birthday cake and chose the flan and Vietnamese jello cake that looked very good. The cost was $35 and I thought it was a reasonable price, given the cake itself was enough for more than 8 people. Customer service was not exceptionally good, but was not too bad either. I thought they were just having a really long day at the time when we got in there haha. Parking was easy to find. We went around 5pm on a Sunday and the lot was half empty. They also have a lot of other things like ice-cream cakes, snacks, cookies, and pastries around the store if you have some times to shop around. I'll be back when we have a birthday party to try their durian cake and durian ice-cream cake!!! read more

I have been to this location for many years, especially for customs cakes. The owner really go out of their way in making your wish come true. Extra bonus is they do not over charge you for custom cake. I did once went to a bakery that they charge $10 extra for just to make a cake blue. Here, they would not charge you that. For years, I've provided pictures from the internet and Pinterest with revisions that fit what I want. Anne has been so great in turning what I want from picture to cake! Mostly recently, she make this super gorgeous mermaid cake that blew me away. It was sooo cute, I wanted to preserve it forever. Van's bakery was my family's go to bakery but not anymore. At least not this location. I went into the bakery just so I can ask and look at all the cake to ensure that my cake would be exactly what I wanted. I asked the lady if they have pandan jello cake and what would be in there. She literally told me yea and that it's a layer of pandan and a layer of coffee with coconut on top. I said there wouldn't be other fruits on there and she said no just coconut unless I wanted to add fruits and I specifically told her only coconut. Instead they gave my sister a fruit cake when it was time for pick up and they told my sister that they don't make pandan jello cake. I didn't pay attention to the order that she wrote but she wrote fruit. These people are so untruthful and would say yes to everything to cheat your money. I am so disappointed at this bakery. I even spoke the same language as them so it definitely wasn't a language barrier issue. They would say yes to your wants but write something completely different on the order. This place doesn't even deserve a star. read more
