Pandan being one of the reasons why we were drawn into this store. Pandan leaves are quite expensive and hard to keep ( just check out the ABC supermarket next door). And Pandan leaves are used in Indonesian desserts, along with Malaysian cooking such as Nasi Lemak and the infamous Kaya jam used to spread on white bread or toast. Bought the pandan waffle and couple of mini patechauds. The waffle quite filling and tasty but too bad should have been served warm. The patechauds were quite a disappointment. My family and I only come to Van's for their sweets and pate chaud... I love love love their chicken pate chaud, 5 stars! But as I got older, I realized that when it comes to their sweets... especially their fruit tart cake... I definitely like Le Croissant Dore's better! My bf still likes it from Van's, but their cream just taste so plain and uneventful... kinda like plain tapioca pudding... I like the fruit tart cake cream to be creamy and rich like at Le C.D. I thought the cakes here were just OK, though very beautifully presented, with curls of chocolate positioned just so, and raspberries clinging onto the edges by the skin of their teeth. The flavor of the chocolate-raspberry cake was too mild, though, and I had to struggle to taste the chocolate at all over the cream and the fruit. The other one, kind of graham-crackery if I had to guess, was tough in the middle. They also have bulk items which seemed a little expensive, compared to others in the area. I got a sampling of two kinds of squid jerky and those candied citrus-y fruits and was surprised at the total. I would contribute to the Yelp page by telling you when they close, but I asked and they said '7'. At the time, it was 7:30. So it's a mystery! read more

Their coffee is meh. The random snacks and bakery items are good. And it's one of the few places I know that sell com chay -- "burnt rice". This stuff is so damn addictive. They're fried rice crispy treats with shredded dry pork and spices. They're so good. You have to understand that it's very hard to find a bakery shop in Little Saigon that has every item being good. I used to always go to this place for a smoothie after eating at a nearby restaurant. I have tried both the strawberry and vanilla flavors countless times and I have to recommend getting the vanilla one. Most places I have to make their vanilla flavors either too icy or too sweet (even artificial tasting!). The staff is nice and they even remember what I usually order, even if I did not come by for months. They used to have yogurt dispensers, but I guess those didn't work out. Be sure to check their baked goods (i.e. cakes, macaroons, tarts, and more). It gets busy around Asian holidays lol. read more

I had my wedding at a nearby banquet hall, and they partner with Van's Bakery to provide a free wedding cake when we surpass the threshold of guests. My wedding was to have 400 guests, so we had ordered a 4 tiered cake. I love the fact that each tier of the cake is a different flavor. On our wedding day, the cake was delivered at the requested time and was absolutely beautiful! The cake itself was very soft and delicious. My guests loved it!! The only downside was that we had to drive all the way back there to return the cake tiers in order to get our $50 deposit back. read more

WHY DID YOU TAKE AWAY THE FROZEN YOGURT?! I don't want a wedding cake, I want yogurt! I don't come here for the bakery at all, I come here for the coffee (especially now that the fro-yo is gone). In my opinion, Van's Bakery has the best Vietnamese coffee in the area when I'm comparing it to Lee's or Banh Mi Che Cali. If you know of another place worth trying, please let me know. Oh Vans bakery, I really wanted you to be good! I have had vans cakes several times and each time it looks soooo good, but the flavor is lacking! The cake was dry and the fruit on top was tart and a little one the hard side. Negative: Slow service, and bad customer service, showing attitude with the customer. I came to order my wedding cake and the lady who helped me order the cake was really upset. Same face I saw when I came to return the stuffs. Her face looks like she has a funeral at home or something. The store is big but they only have a few assisitance to take help so the line is always long and take forever to get your order. THere is no clear line for guests to wait in line. This store will charge deposit $50 for the cake holder which only cost around $20. What kind of deposit is this? if you lose it, you lose $50 for something worth only $20. Positive: parking is really big. Big store with variety of food to choose. To the owner: tell your lady (i think she is around 40-50 years old.) Love this bakery. Not only does it have a little bit of everything, its consistently good. Avocado shake-creamy and just slightly sweet. Cream puffs-yummy albeit a bit swishier than I would like, but as far as I am concerned, its all about the custard filling and that does not disappoint; mung bean cakes-yummy! All three of these goodies only cost $5.50. Great deal! I have had the regular sized pate chaud, fruit tarts and some of the packaged goodies as well. Good and fresh. AND it doesn't hurt that you get to stare at all of the beautiful cakes and goodies while waiting for that shake to be made. This is my go-to bakery in the area. Good selection of pastries, not exactly the most delicious pastries (kinda stale sometimes comparatively, actually) but the prices are cheap and reasonable. Think of it as the McDonalds' of Vietnamese bakeries and you'd have a pretty good idea. Most of their pastries/steamed rolls are refrigerated, so they don't taste as fresh. Their cakes are delicious, though. I love their frosting sooooooo much. I usually hate frosting on cake, since they're generally too sweet and not buttery enough...not Van's. The frosting here is buttery, rich, slightly sweet, utterly creamy. I could eat an entire cake made of frosting here. Credit cards accepted with more than $10 purchase only. read more

Request 1) In a nut shell, I'm asking that this bakery sell fresh goods, and if they are going to sell old pastries, at least put a date sticker so I can gauge how dry it will be...Customers like CONSISTENCY Request 2) Can you have pastries ready in the morning? I love me so fruit tart, sponge cake, and almond croissant. HOWEVER, when I come here in the morning (not crack of dawn, 8-10am) for breakfast they still have yet to have their various croissants ready. I understand that baking takes time, but I'm sure you are losing so much business from not having your BASIC items ready for morning go-ers. I've come here several mornings asking for the same thing, hoping that the owner would catch on that there are patrons who would like to enjoy their goods in the morning. With that said, today, i came in a tad before 8, didn't have croissants on display, but i always ask, just in case they are hot off the trays in the back. The nice lady checks back they bring out the sweets, and then I wait another two minutes and she brings out the ham and cheese i ordered. (Yay!) So i thought, for once I've been at the perfect time when things are fresh and hot, so I snagged a chocolate one as well. Got in my car and chomped.... The HAM AND CHEESE WAS COLD -_- they basically took an old pastry and put it in the toaster. You cant bake a croissant golden brown without having the ham and cheese melt to ooey gooey ness. Of course the chocolate one was old too. I also get the mocha roll here a lot. But its always hit or miss, because it can either be fresh or a week old. LOVE it when its fresh, sad when its dry. They also ruined my sister's wedding cake. I CRAVE AND LUST after asian wedding/birthday cake. However, my sister's was wet, soggy, and not soft to the palette. My sister had two receptions, and we ordered another cake from the other vans down the street, and that was the cake was amazing and brag worthy. So please, some consistency (or letting patrons know when things arent fresh) and having your basic goods ready at a more reasonable time would bump this bakery up to 3-4 stars. read more

3.5 stars Every time I come to Santa Ana during the day time, my family tend to frequent this place. My family frequents this place for the ice coffee as opposed to the competitor nearby (Banh Mi Che Cali). Once you walk in you just want to try everything since it all looks so good. I've always wanted to try the flan with fruit on top but haven't really had the occasion for that. Also not many people like flan. They even have DURIAN cake. Those two cakes definitely make Van's standout compared to other bakeries. Van's also has a soft yogurt section and sells other dry goods. Overall, great place to satisfy all your sweet tooth cravings with the exception of Vietnamese coconut-based desserts (may have to walk over to Banh Mi Che Cali for that). read more

Horrible business practices. No value in customer service at all. Fruit tart cakes are usually if not always stale. Their macaroons are a horrible excuse of a macaroon. And the ingredients they use in their bun bao (specifically the meat and egg one) isn't exactly FDA approved considering the egg itself had two white layers and one of them had the texture of plastic like substance. When a customer brings back an item they bought and says there's something wrong with it and the owner agrees, have the decency to offer back a refund or exchange for another item that wasn't made from the bakery itself. Don't just stand there and say you won't use that ingredient again and hope the customer takes your word for it. The Health Department should really pay a visit to this bakery. read more

I can't believe I never stopped by this place in the 3 months I've lived in Westminster. I walked in and right away was greeted with an eyefull of wonderful pastires. I walked to the counter and was immediately helped by the women working there. Although their English was limited, they helped me choose different varities of desserts to try. I've had cakes with lots of frosting before but this is incredibly terrible. You can see for yourself that's it's at least 40% frosting compare to cake. I've bought many times here before but this is by far the worst. First they tried to rip my sister off by saying it's $60 for a each 6" cake until I said that I've ordered there before and that the price is not right they went down to 45 which is still expensive for just a 6 inch. No, i did not get any fancy design. It was plain white all around. They closed the lid to cake box therefore smushing the top. Both cakes were really leaning to one side. Overall this was the worst because it's not what I paid for. The only reason why I get cake here is that it's soft. Everything else needs a lot of improvement. We came here to pick up some baked goods. My dad picked out some desserts and my wife picked out some traditional Vietnamese meat pastries. Well, we missed lunch so my wife shared some with us. Overall, it was very good and happy we were able to try it. The chewy sesame candy was very chewy and just as my wife remembered. Next time, we will be sure to revisit this place. Here is another location that I have to stop at whenever I am in town. I love all the little pastries here. It is good and the price is right. My favorite here is the pate chauds. There is always room for a pate chauds from here, not matter how far the zipper has to go down or how many buttons I have to unbutton. The staff is always so nice and always smiling. Holy cow. I remember always going here every weekend when I was a kid with my family. On the weekends my family would make the drive from San Diego to Santa Ana to reup on their asian groceries and my mom would always stop by this bakery and we would order their popular fruit cakes, pandan cakes, and such. To be honest I was really sad coming here because they downsized and now the store size is a small portion of what it used to be. I guess they don't need that big of a space anymore. Regardless, I will always visit this little bakery and support it anytime that I am in the area because it takes me back to my childhood youth when my parents would buy me my favorite asian snacks/bakery. *My mother loves to purchase beef jerky here as well. Apparently they make jerky fresh and sell different varieties of them here. I think their jerky compeitor Vua Kho Bo is the reason why they downsized because when the shop was bigger they used to have different huge size tubs of jerky galore! read more

I've been going here ever since I was little, when my parents and I would come down from an hour away to stock up on groceries at ABC Supermarket. All my birthday cakes came from here, and even now I always stop by for their macarons and other pastries - they make everything French style, so it's not overly rich and sweet like the American bakeries I usually have to go to in my city for cakes. I had my first crème brûlée here, too, which probably was what got my sweet tooth going. They also have great pâté chaud, which always great to stock up on as weekday snacks. I'll probably always be stopping by when I'm down in Little Saigon, because they're not only a great bakery, but also because their location is extremely convenient. The texture wasn't my favorite - they're a bit too crunchy so it crumbles and you get little bits and pieces all over your pants after every bite. I make a 29 mile drive to come here. I specifically started coming here for Pandan cake aka Bahn Bo Noung.. which I love! More recently I have also started trying different things for example the casava sticks that are four for one dollar are so good.. I also like baguettes..there are so many options for pastries and that I don't know what else to purchase so the only bad thing about me coming here is the fact that no one understands what I am saying/asking and that they can't tell me what's good. We chose this place to do our wedding cake and the owners were very friendly and lenient. We showed them our cake inspiration picture and they captured it better than what we imagined. We brought in our cake topper, turned out the base was too big and we couldn't fix it in time. But! The owner gave us the reassurance that he was able to make it happen and he did! The female owner, helped with the ribbon decorations to capture our inspiration from Pinterest and she did a great job!
