It was my first time to walk into this bakery and I was impressed with their impressive display of fruit cakes and other goodies. This is definitely one of the first things you see on the left side of the bakery when you enter. The right side is more of like a grocery style setting with shelves of bread and refreshments. In the middle are tables of more goodies like crackers, cookies etc. Towards the back is an even bigger surprise because they have setup very similar to Yogurtland. They have self served yogurt and then a toppings bar. The create your own yogurt is 30 cents an ounce. When I went in here, I was really looking for some breakfast bread. I found myself looking at their hot pastries and chose to get the chicken pate chaud. The chicken pate chaud are a $1 each. I bought four of the chicken pate chaud but I wish I bought more. Flaky, crispy crust and big chunks of chicken in the inside, these chicken pate chauds are some of the best empanadas I've had. What a winner for only a $1. I would definitely not mind coming back here to get more of those! This is a great breakfast treat and snack place! read more

I usually frequent the Brookhurst or Harbor locations, but decided to try this one out today because I wanted to see if this location offers Ice Cream Macarons - which they do. This Vans is on Bolsa just west of Magnolia - away from the asian garden mall. It took me a while to find it, but this store seems to be the brightest and most modern looking store out of all the Vans Bakeries and I was hopeful of good things. Unfortunately, the cashier (in her 40s) took advantage of the fact that I am not Vietnamese. I asked the cost of a small round cake and was quoted $19, when a viet customer purchased the very same for $14. The other locations on Brookhurst and Harbor sell their macarons at $1.50 each or buy 10, get 2 free at $15.00 per dozen. I asked how much it was for a dozen and the cashier lady said "$1.50 Each - No special, never!". WTF. I looked on their yelp page after I left and other customers have purchased it at that discounted price! On top of getting gypped, the macarons were hard, brittle with no flavor. I'm not sure how the Vans Bakeries work - if the baked goods are all baked in 1 warehouse and distributed, or prepared by each individual store, but I prefer the macarons at Harbor and Brookhurst locations. The macarons at those locations are moist and hold more flavor. Oh and if you're still wondering - this location did in fact have Ice Cream Macarons. Thai Tea, Strawberry, and Jasmine Tea. $3.50 each. Meh. Here is my observation as far as all Vans: - Harbor: If its your 1st time going, the cashier lady may seem a little harsh as far as attitude - she just has a dry personality, but is straight up and always helpful. The macarons here are the best out of the rest of the Vans in my opinion. - Brookhurst: Friendly! The workers here are probably the nicest out of all the bakeries. This store holds more variety as far as dried goods, snacks & drinks. Not a bad store at all. - Bolsa/Magnolia: Eh. Read my review above. - Bolsa Asian Garden Mall: I have yet to try. Van's bakery used to be the go to place for birthday cakes. Now, so many bakeries are popping up. I usually go to the Korean bakeries as their cakes are more delicious! The must trys at Van's: --chicken/pork pate chauds --pork sung --flan cake: topped with fresh fruit. Yummy! --Vietnamese yogurt --Fruit smoothies: avocado is the best. Soursop is also good! --Ice blended coffee: my fave is the cappuccino. Very bold coffee flavor with a hint of sweetness. The bakery is located in the same plaza as ABC supermarket and BofA. Parking is difficult depending on the time of day. They accept credit which is a perk. I am still a fan of Van's for the past 2 decades. read more

This Van's Bakery is located in the most dangerous shopping center in all of Little Saigon in Westminster. Expect to leave this parking lot with a few dents and major scratches on your car. Culprit? Most likely a psycho Vietnamese mom driving in a Toyota Camry, Corolla, Sienna or Honda Accord, Civic or Odyssey. I came here Christmas day to pick up our Xmas Log Cake from Van's. The parking lot was FILLED with Asian drivers and little grandmas walking around with their bags of goodies from the supermarket. So let's just say, it was WAY beyond packed. But even with the craziness, this bakery seems to run efficiently. I walked right up to the counter and gave them my pickup ticket and got our cake within a few minutes. Super easy transaction! They installed a new FroYo section here too: Van's Frozen Yogurt. I didn't get to try it, but I saw tons of little kiddies screaming with delight when they filled their froyo cups up with tons of candied toppings. I love all the cheap Vietnamese bite-sized desserts they have up at the register. And you can never go wrong with Vietnamese beef jerky! The best there is out there I tell ya! I wouldn't order my wedding cake here like most fobs do...but I do love stopping in if I'm ever thirsty for something old fashioned and sweet or if I'm having the sweet tooth munchies. Van's Bakery is where I have been going to over the past few years to purchase Banh Chung (rice cake) - which is a traditional gift to give to your elders, loved ones and friends during the Vietnamese New Year (Tet). It is also one of my favorite "traditional" Vietnamese foods. Van's sells these massively square cakes (about 2lbs each) at $15 to $16 a piece, and it comes in these festively "lucky" red gift bags. Each cake comes with rice, mung beans and seasoned pork. While other Vietnamese bakeries in the area also sell banh chung, I've been getting mine at Van's since they seem to be the tastiest. With about four locations throughout the Little Saigon area, it pretty much comes down to which location is more convenient for you - as each Van's location is in a high traffic shopping center (which comes with the packed parking lot/typical "Asian" drivers situation). In addition to the seasonal foods like banh chung, you can also buy vietnamese snacks and prepared foods such as my favorite - Xoi Lap Suong (sweet rice with pork, chinese sausage, fried onions), Banh Gio (Vietnamese Rice Flour Cake with pork and quail eggs), pate chauds, spring rolls, etc. I've also noticed that Van's Cafe Sua Da (Vietnamese Iced Coffee) is probably one of the stronger types available in the area, and the taste is rich, creamy and sweet as well. There is also a small "grocery" type aisle where you can buy jerky/snacks by the pound, french quarter coffee grounds, gift-ready chocolates and there's even a self-serve frozen yogurt section. During the busier seasons - such as Tet or near Trung Tho (Autumn Festival), I've noticed this location employs a few younger bi-lingual staff to assist with those who do not speak Vietnamese. My parents enjoy Asian-style baked goods. You know the stuff that isn't too sweet, but just sweet enough. At least for the cakes anyway. Today is my mom's birthday, but since I can't spend it with her, I decided to surprise her with a cake from Van's Bakery last weekend. My mom loves the green coconut cakes here. Personally, I'm a fan of the strawberry cakes but it's her birthday so that's what I bought. Actually I bought two slices of strawberry cakes for my brother and me too. Here's the thing about Asian cakes. They are spongy like angel food and frosted with whipped frosting not butter-cream. The result is an airy tasting cake. They are usually filled with some sort of fresh fruit like strawberries or mangoes. This is what I grew up eating every birthday. For a small cake, it was about $15, which is pretty cheap. A similar cake at J.Sweet will cost you $24, but it won't have coconut in it. Then I insisted her if I can buy a gift bag? She went, the gift bag is not for sale. We had Van's Bakery for our wedding cake. The design of the cake is beautiful. I show the photo of cake that I want and they make my wedding cake looks exactly the same as the photo. The taste of the cake is delicious and all the guest love the cake. We brought back the rest of the cake, after one or two weeks. It still taste fresh. We have to put the deposit for the cake stand, but unfortunately, the venue throw our stand away so we can't take our deposit back. Overall, we love this place. Thank you Van's Bakery. read more

I went here to get food a week ago on Saturday. They sold cured nem chua in their fridge. I bought two trays. I ate three and became violently ill with vomit, diarrhea, fever, cold chills and hard of breathing. I did not eat any other protein on 5e day I had this item. I kept the trays in the fridge and ate the day after i bought them so no way did I let it go bad. They must have kept these in the fridge for a looooooong time before selling or the temperature was not kept cold enough. I was worried that I caught covid-19 and got tested for it. I did not have covid. What I had was cured pork that went bad and became toxic. I'm never going back to a place that doesn't check on expiration. I have been so so sick for a whole week and still not back to normal and can only eat baby food, white congee and hot water. If Yelp allows no star review, I would have selected it. read more

Price is reasonable (actually compared to other bakeries, they're cheap). We tried some macaroons and they were not bad (considering they're only $1.50 and bigger than other places). We tried a few of their pastries and their taste and quality were comparable to the typical Asian chain (I found these to be a bit better as it wasn't that sweet), but cost less. My husband and I choose Van's bakery to make our wedding cake mostly based on price, we paid 70% of what we planned to pay for a 3 tier cake at Final Touch or Gival and got a 6 tier cake. The sponge cake is not as light and doesn't come in fancy flavors like passionfruit but its much tastier than overly sweet American cake. It is good just not the BEST but after a 7 course dinner, most guest wont even eat cake, never mind noticing if the cake was amazing. The cake was moist, not too sweet and tasted freshly made. Be aware to ask for prices at each Van's bakery, although they're owned by the same family, the cake prices vary store to store. I gave the owner pictures of what I wanted but I ended up getting a different design, its not ugly, pretty in fact, just not what I expected. I was ok with it considering what a deal I got and it still turned out pretty. Because I got such a big cake I asked if I can have boxes to give guests cake to take home but I guess they forgot. Anyways, among their vast selection of goodies and sweets, I ALWAYS order a box of cream puffs in the end. The custard inside is just so divine. I'm giving this place 4 stars because of the yummies, however a star is getting knocked off because their service really isn't star quality. They usually mix up orders and it's really hard because they don't really have a menu. You just have to know the names of the desserts, so trying something new is difficult. Normally this bakery provides delicious Vietnamese baked goods I can't ordinarily get anywhere else. I think over the years, it's definitely gone downhill. My sister bought me a banh Tet (chung) for Tet (because I live 50 miles away) there's not many places that sell it year-round so usually we get it from here if we're in the area. For the lunar new year, we thought they would be even more delicious and plentiful. When I cut into this $18 roll, it was THE saddest piece of pork and mung bean in a large rice roll. The flavor of the rice was weird and chalky and pork meat was fatty. Rice wasn't even steamed right because the rice was undercooked and crumbly instead of a soft and sticky. What a disappointment. The small square ones were made right and are much cheaper. I would say stick to the smaller ones because they'll rip you off on the big round ones. I'm sure theres other bakeries in the area that do it better so I'll be on he hunt for a new bakery. read more
