Stopped in at Vans today 1 star at its best and im only giving that because they had good customer service and the place was clean enough. They offer a few dry goods on the shelves, noodles, Chinese candies, etc. They also offer a very small selection of fruits and vegetables as well as fresh and frozen fish and a variety of other frozen seafood. They fry fish as well and thats where the problem is. I ordered a seafood combo #1 with catfish filet, perch, shrimp huspuppies and fries and I also ordered a whole catfish dinner which came with 2 "whole catfish". It was all burnt and fried to a crisp, wayyyy to hard. It lacked flavor and for the price of the catfish #15 it was real skimpy. Well not the cleanest place at times but it has ingredients one would be need in Asian cooking. They also have delish Vietnamese desserts and snacks usually made fresh on Sundays. There's "exotic" veggies, frozen stuff, canned foods, and fish/seafood. Freshness is not always guaranteed so just beware and take time to look and judge. I was having a fish fry an purchased catfish filets, tilapia, perch, stripped bass & salmon and OMG it was super fresh! The cuts were just as I requested but the freshness of the fig was as though they'd just been caught and fried up the same day! This will b my go to place for all things seafood! read more

As you guess, I love going to Van's Fish Market to buy FISH! They have a pretty decent selection of fishes and some shrimp. You will also find it helpful that they have certain fishes in different cut such as already filleted or cut into streaks. On restocking days (Wednesday?), you can also find LIVE clams, razor clams, blue crab, and conch. They do not just stop at live seafood but they will fry your fish for you to take home. That's pretty convenience, get your weekly grocery while they lend a hand with dinner. Their vegetables selection is pretty limited and mostly catered to Asian cooking. They have a good variety of dried goods and frozen items. Like I have said in other Asian market review, get into the habit of checking expiration dates on canned goods. I would also be careful with freezer items, I have brought home spoiled items before. If you know what the item is suppose to look like or smell like, do a thorough examination. A lot of time the owners are pretty honest when you ask them how long it has been out. Since i'm a regular there, the "mom" of the shop pretty much tells me what I need to steer away from. They do not carry any fresh meat I don't think, it's usually in the freezer. Overall, pretty decent Vietnamese market. read more

Although it's primarily known as a fish market, I only come here on Sundays to check out the other goodies - tropical fruits and Vietnamese desserts. Sometimes they have shipments of Texas oranges, lychee, longan, rambutan, mangosteen, and dragonfruit when they're in season. Prices are premium for these, but they look pretty fresh. I believe the desserts are homemade and brought to the store fresh in self-labeled plastic containers. Just to name a few there are banana leaf wrapped sweet rice, coconut, mung bean, corn, tapioca desserts. They recently got a sugar cane juice (nuoc mia "pronounced: nook me") machine and you can order that at the counter to go. Taste? Sweet, refreshing served with loads of ice. The sugar cane juice may not be as good as overseas, but it comes very close. It's the best you'll get in Indy at least. read more

This place is quite deceiving because to me it doesn't come at all as a fish market, more like a Vietnamese market. The smell doesn't bother me because it quite typical being an Asian market. Right when you walk in you see the self serve fish area and than next to it was the fried seafood counter. They have all kinds of Asian goods here, and I only found myself here because saraga was a mad house. My complaint here is they don't put prices on anything! Literally from veggies to can goods, or packages, no prices. And also, they don't label anything on the fridge, so you really don't even know what half the stuff is. And the way they bag there frozen good quite unsanitary in regular plastic bags instead of nice styrofoam plates like other grocery stores. Stuff is such all over the place here and I'm pretty sure half the stuff is expired. I grabbed my unlabeled price goods and ordered 2 banh mi at the check out counter. And again since there was no prices on anything I end up spending over $40 which I found was quite high compare to other Asian grocery stores with the minimal items I got. I loaded up my groceries and came back for my banh mi which were wrap and toasted but was badly wrapped. Like the paper they wrapped it with doesn't fit the bread entirely. But anyways, the banh mi was good and they packed it with lots of meat and spread. I think that's the only thing I enjoy about this store that they sell banh mi and like I didn't die from eating it. Like I wish I could bring myself to order the fried stuff, I don't think my stomach could handle it. I don't plan to do my Asian grocery shopping here again, only if I need 1 or 2 items. Overall this store is not worth coming back too, it's dirty and stuff all over the place. And who knows if those fishes are really fresh. Definitely a market you probably see in the streets of Vietnam that would not need to pass any health codes. read more

I will never ever come back to this smelly place. The guy there was very rude. I wanted some crab legs, he said go to the back and look in the white containers. I went back there and found crab legs that was brown, and some bags were busted open. I ask the man at the front if they had more crab legs. He said no. I asked him if he had the jumbo snow crab legs I seen on the website. He said we have no website. I told him so what I seen on the website for Van's Fish Market on Lafayette road is not this place. He said again agitated "We have no website" I left and went up the street to the Saratoga International Food Market and got some of the most beautiful looking crab legs and they were very tasty as well. read more

this place is BOOMMBB!!! I came here after a friend told me that it was the best fish place in town and I found out he wasn't lying! Prices are cheap and the fried fish dinners here are phenomenal. I'd recommend the tilapia and catfish dinners. Perch is pretty good too. So let's discuss my adventure here at Van's... I came here with my buddy and his family, and once I walk in the front door this place smelled horrifying! I mean, a baby's smelly behind smells like flowers compared to the inside of this place. As I tried to tolerate the smell has best as I could, my experience kept going downhill faster and faster. All I came to buy from here was shrimp to boil. I asked the cashier where I could find some shrimp, she then told me "We don't have any shrimp, leave me alone now!!!" Well alright then lady... I searched on and on for some shrimp. Eventually, I came across shrimp. I got a bag of shrimp and small can of Mountain Dew, and went to the counter to check out. I asked the lady instantly, "Why did you lie to me?!" She looked at me very rudely, and said "Because you and your friends shouldn't be here, you need to leave after I check you out!" I was very outraged, and tried to keep my cool as best as I possibly could. My total for a small bag of shrimp and a small can of mountain dew: $14.45, with tax included... WHAT THE HELL??!!! I asked the lady, "Ma'am, is that the real price, or are you just making that up so I can have a bad day??" "Shut up and hand over the money!!!" She replied. I threw her a 20 dollar bill at her face, and left. Wouldn't you know, 2 days later, I cooked the shrimp. The result, I ended up with severe diarrhea and one week's worth of food poising!!! They're lucky they're getting the health inspector to shut them down, nor a law suit to take away all their money!!! I recommend, NEVER, EVER come here!!!!! read more

Van's Fish Market reminded me of the Great Mart on Georgetown Road but on a much larger scale. They carry spices, cookware, fresh and frozen fish, teas, sauces with many more isles and rows of fish. I didn't purchase fish today since I wasn't going straight home but I'll shop again to try the fresh fish. read more
