If i have to order my food through a plexiglass glass window with a cut out speaker i need to take my food to go & enjoy it elsewhere. I ordered it right on the side thank God because they give you plenty if you get it on top! They do have other sauce flavors! The wings are seasoned well & perfectly crispy . Every bite is good! Their fries are crispy & flavorful. They offer lunch specials with #'d wing and tender pieces, desserts, other sides. I also tried the fried macaroni which i thought was okay just a bit over cooked. I haven't actually been to this restaurant, but I have eaten here several times via takeout thanks to a coworker. Each time I've gotten chicken wings with the sauce on the side. My coworker suggested getting on the sauce on the side because they can drench it. The sauce makes the wings. They give you a large portion of fries. I flip between the 2 and 4 piece. I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois so I am very familiar with Harold's Chicken restaurants. This Harold's Chicken location is not good at all‼ Let's start with the lobby area to the food last. The floor in the lobby area was extremely dirty and sticky (video provided), the "No waiting in the lobby signs" are all over the lobby area. The cashier/cook said, "Those signs have been up since COVID, you can wait in the lobby or in your car and come back in 15 minutes." I waited in the lobby area and took some pictures. The price list for the food is blacked out, there were food crumbs along the counter but you can not dine in, there was a big box in the corner that had a waste tank for camping, the fries were old and cold, I asked for a 4 wing dinner fried hard with salt and pepper with sauce on the side. The chicken was previously fried and he fried it again in old grease and taste like pork skins, salt pork or bacon. I really couldn't tell which one but it might have been a combination of all flavors. The $7.50 that I spent for a 4 wing dinner was a waste of my money and time. I give them 1 star and that's for the picture of Barack Obama on the wall. I should have known that the food was not going to be good since they were basically inside/attached to a gas station ‍ but hey I saw a Harold's and got excited since it's a spot from back home. Nestled away right next to a gas station this place is pretty much a carry out joint. This restaurant is not in the best area of the city. They have a small dining area, but it is pretty tight. The chicken is pretty good, but as many have said before me, save some time and call your order in. They do have lunch specials and some intriguing desert choices like toffee grapes. Food here is reasonably priced. I got two lunches for under $10 (what can I say, I like my food). Parking is also limited there as the small lot is shared with the gas station. All in all the fried chicken is pretty good and a 3.5 rating would be more accurate, but I opted to round down. read more

I called my order in and was advised 20-25 mins. It wasn't ready when I got there.... now I've heard they were slow so call in your order. Not sure why they move so slow. I ordered the chicken and perch combo and it was $14.0 and some change. I asked for mild sauce on it and hot sauce on the side... no matter how slow they are the recipe is the same so the food was seasoned well with no issues. My food was pipping hot and fresh. I would have preferred a little more sauce on my food but overall it was good. My chicken wings were very crunchy and my perch was fried (soft) crunchy. I would have preferred it to be cooked a little bit longer. From a business operations position. I feel like they need to implement a better way to service so orders can be processed timely and a bit more organized. Sad to say, this business did not last as long as its long awaited opening! The quality/taste of food deteriorated and the open for business hours have declined as well! You are gambling on them being open each to you go to the location. They didn't reopen the cooking area for viewing and were still serving food from the side door. Alright - so let's get to it. DISCLAIMER: This location only gets three stars because of things related to the service; NOT the food. I am so excited that Harold's chicken shack is back! Many of you might remember the other location on Shadeland and its troubles (odd times open, never answering phones, etc). So when I heard this one was opening, I was extremely excited. A native of the Chicagoland area, I love Harold's. Love the MILD SAUCE! If you haven't tried it, you need to. It's just a must. So when I visited on Super Bowl Sunday, I totally expected it to be swamped. I was willing to take the risk. Their Facebook page had a post explaining that they were taking advance orders for the game, which was pretty cool seeing as though they weren't "officially" open until February 5th. When I pulled up, I saw that the restaurant is adjacent to the Phillips 66 service station on Lafayette Rd. which means - no parking! I managed to snag a spot over by the side of the station, but that was by chance. I fully expected to be told that they weren't taking single orders as it was so busy, but that wasn't the case. The workers were really really doing a great job filling orders and I was able to put mine in quickly. Warning: they're only taking cash right now, and when you place your order you must talk into the speaker. The staff is hidden behind plexiglass. They told me my wait would be about 30-35 mins but I think it was actually less than that. There's a door on the side of the counter/window where the staff brings our orders and calls your name. The young lady who first came out was so friendly and kind, I didn't mind waiting while chatting with her. There was also a young gentleman answering phones who was very polite with each customer. I was pleased to see that. My food was hot and fresh and absolutely divine. A few things - menus are now at the counter so grab one when you come in. Sometimes the phones will ring busy. Keep trying if you want to place an advance order. The store is pretty cold because it's really not that big. There's about 6 small tables where you can dine in. Be sure to check your food BEFORE you leave to make sure it's accurate. They won't accommodate issues after you leave the store. Sorry, I don't have any pics because I ate my food too fast. The location is a bit inconvenient since it's connected to a gas station on an extremely busy street. The food was done after about 15-20 minutes. Everything was cooked well, not too hard, not too soft. The fish could have used a little more seasoning, there honestly wasn't much flavor. Something is off about the chicken and it's not quite like Harolds back home. Kind of seems like maybe it's not enough lemon pepper on it or something. Every since the little older Lady that ran the front left, their service has been on the decline. Either they dont answer the phone or its off the hook. When you show up to ask why they didnt answer, you get a lame excuse. Like "We too busy", "Its just us here", "Im doing a big/catering order", etc. They dont make the order the way you asked. I love the food and fun staff here. This is my local chicken joint and it never disappoints. I usually stick to the chicken and shrimp combo. But, the perch is on point. I will suggest that you order before time because it's made to order (with love) and takes a little bit of a wait, so be patient. I was a bit hesitant at its opening simply because of my stigma with "gas station chicken" but the gas station is next door and not apart. If you do not want your chicken drenched in mild sauce they will assume you don't want any, the amount will be very stingy or they will not give you any at all. Okay ya'll- this is the real deal! I've read about the bumps and inconsistencies they've had in the beginning but yesterday's chicken was awesome! If you are from Chicago (home of Harold's) then you know that the sauce and fries are just as important as the chicken and they were perfect. Now for those in a hurry; I have never been to a Harold's where you didn't have to wait for your chicken because it's dropped fresh. I'm okay with that. Some people aren't. Now, if you want good chicken, you're gonna have to cop a squat. Everything down to the pictures on the wall reminded me of home and my trips to Harold's on the southside of Chicago. I really wish employees would value their employment as much as the employer would appreciate them too. So, three stars, becos at least the fryer functions accordingly and the seasoning to the mushrooms and all that good seasoned fry food is on point. With that said, there is a huge management issue that needs to be addressed in order for this restaurant to fully work properly. The music they play for one got all kinds of explicit lyrics and worse, it's always a problem with either who ever took the order over the phone or the tablet working. While I was their picking up an order I placed over the phone that nobody apparently took down, the girl that works there was telling a food delivery person that they didn't get the order and had to wait another 15 minutes for them to make it since the tablet was down. I called the restaurant and they tried to say that I shouldn't have ordered through Door Dash, even though Door Dash has no impact on how cooked the fish is. Amazing chicken wings, catfish and shrimp. Everything is fresh, never frozen. They don't even have a freezer in the back! That means it's really really fresh, good food. Excellent customer service. You have to wait longer but that's because the food is cooked to order, not sitting under heat lamps like KFC, Popeyes or Church's. Hard to find a better spot in Indy that's open late for good food.
