We ate here many times, especially 2011-2014, but for some reason haven't for quite sometime. We decided to get some to-go tonight. Rib platter, pulled pork, brisket with sides and toast. Ribs were an extremely small portion for $15. Especially since I could have bought and cooked my own whole rack for the same price with a better result. 6 ribs, 4 were tiny, tough, without much flavor or edible meat. Seriously, two bites per rib with the rest cartilage and bone. The 2 larger ribs actually had flavor and good texture and reminded me of Van's ribs of the past. Pulled pork and brisket were pedestrian, with little flavor and overall dry. The biggest issue, everything needs seasoning. Pinto beans, bland. Green beans were tasty, for canned green beans. Fries were very, very soggy, not in the least cooked enough or properly. Toast was done, but really just had no flavor. BBQ sauce tasted fine, but now they only gave us one type. They didnt have the spicy BBQ sauce that was one of my highlights. For $30, it was absolutely not worth it for 2 people. I really wanted this to be the Van's I remember, but it was just a shadow of its former self. Made me sad. I won't be back. read more

Ordered Chopped Brisket Dinner with Baked Beans and Fried Okra. The brisket was not even warm much less hot. It was also not trimmed before it was chopped which resulted it being full of fat in every bite. If that wasn't enough the baked beans weren't baked beans. They were pork and beans with no seasonings. The okra was hot but a little greasy. Needless to say we were not satisfied. This was not a $30+ meal. We won't be back. read more

Ordered one of our french fries well done, but both orders tasted the same. Not crispy. I decided to order some BBQ this time. Figured since it's Van's Pig Stand- I should order something with pork. I ordered the chopped pork with cole slaw and potato salad. I like the Texas Toast and the cole slaw was crispy. The pork was meh. The flavor of my sauce was my favorite thing- tangy, sweet with peppery notes. I think I was expecting the texture to be more soft.... Good local place for bbq! I really like Rudy's (which I've visited more recently), but love that this place is local and has a really neat vibe (it's in an old filling station building). Every time I visit Norman with someone who hasn't tried true southern bbq, I take them here. Everything I've ever had is great! I wish I could comment more on the food, but I haven't been in awhile (since the time I introduced my now husband to southern bbq years ago). I hope it's still as great as it always was! read more

I had an online order, due to Covid, for pick-up. The rack of ribs were burned and tough on one side. Opening the carton of the pound of brisket was disgusting. It practically floated in grease. By the time I cut the fat out of the meat, there were maybe 6 good slices left. They do make the best fried okra so that increased this review from no stars to two stars. read more

Wow, very impressive. I've had bbq in several states, including TX, and this place ranks up there with some of the best. Had the 2 meat plate, pork ribs and brisket, and the ribs were quite meaty, moist, and flavorful. The brisket had nice spices and also was moist, and both portions were more than substantial and filling. Tasty sides of pinto beans and potato salad (mustard based). I would definitely recommend this small establishment for quality and value. Oh, and eating the banana pudding brought back fond childhood memories of how my mom and other family used to make it as fresh as this was. read more

Their sides are okay but they skimp on them big time and when that began happening we slowed way down on visiting this place because the prices went up a little and side servings were cut in half - boo! I have to say though I have cooked bbq for an FCCLA dinner and it is really hard to keep things clean when you are dealing with wood to smoke meat with, seasonings, and sauce. It's the best BBQ place I've tried in Norman (admittedly, I haven't made it to Ray's yet which I hear is also good). I split a 3-meat platter, with okra and potato salad. All of the meat was tasty, as were the sides. 4 stars because the prices are a bit high for the amount of meat and/or sides. Van's was thoroughly average. Dry, fairly tough ribs. The sides were nothing to write home about. Friendly, prompt service for sure, and a nice atmosphere. But as a BBQ lover, there was not a lot to write home about, as least when it comes to the ribs. Have been to this restaurant twice and enjoyed my meals. My go to is the brisket and turkey. Both delicious and highly recommend.

My son who is a bbq fan gives high marks to the food here. I , although not a BBQ lover, found the place to very creatively decorated in keeping with the theme. The opposite of a hole in the wall. My only critique is the house salad was quite plain and bland and the blue cheese dressing mainly salt. How about some shredded cabbage and other greens in addition to iceberg. What can I say, it is good bbq. I love the pulled pork, the brisket, the ribs are usually very juicy and tender. Their okra is really good, as are most of the sides I have tried. Our kids love to come here, as well. When I am in the mood for bbq, this is where I go. read more
