To start with , I ordered a special (philly steak combo) and 1pound of brisket. The guy rang only the brisket and - when I got my receipt back I told him' this can't be correct' and then he rang up the other 1/2 of my order. The delay started there- my brisket came out and around 5 minutes (min) later the special came out. Food portion for the special was weak. My wife looked at me and said 'is that $12 worth of meat?' I gave her some of my brisket, (approximately 1/3 of my meat was fat) and she was happy at least. read more

Van's has the best bbq menu and everything I've ever ordered has tasted awesome! The ribs and green beans are my favorite and they helped me many times with my holiday meal by preparing everything to just come and pick up! My family loves our Vans holiday meals. We met 14-year-employee Justin Bennet at our visit last week and he is AMAZING. He is so happy and helpful to come to our table and get whatever refills we needed and he DANCED around the restaurant. We were in town for an OU game and wanted good old BBQ. Van's hit the spot. The brisket was smoky and tender, the hot links were deliciously spicy, and the ribs were perfectly seasoned and tender. Side options were all tasty. Will definitely come again when I'm back in town. read more

Tried the 2 meat with ribs and brisket and potato salad and mac and cheese. Ribs were some of the best I've had and brisket had good flavor. Mac and cheese was moist and flavorful and potato salad reminded me of traditional picnic salad. Overall great plate for $14!! Sauces were a touch on the sweet side for my liking but not bad. I'd for sure go back if in Norman! read more

This place was awesome! The ribs were great!! I worked in bbq for 5 years so I'm picky about bbq but this was the bomb. The ribs are fall off the bone, bark and season were excellent. I'm sorry. I've paid $9 for a cold grisly sandwich and soggy French fries for the last time. I'm not exactly sure what happened to Van's but it's not the same place it was even a couple of years ago. Maybe they have to know you personally before they treat you like they care whether or not you come back. All I know is that enough is enough. read more

We have been going to Van's Pig Stand in Moore, Ok for 7 - 8 years. Today we took a couple with us that had not been there before. They will not be back. We probably won't. The chicken was very dry. The ribs looked and tasted like they had been around for 2 - 3 days. They were tough and all the edges could not be eaten. The workers were not friendly. Usually someone comes by your table to see how things are and offers to get more drinks if you need them. No one came by today. I wondered if it had changed hands or something. It definitely was not the Van's I am familiar with. What a disappointment! read more

(Norman) ambiance is amazing and the staff were super friendly and helpful with our questions. There was a wait to order, but with so much to look at, and extra time to look over the menu, it passed quickly. So their tv ads argue between with or without the sauce. I'm a fan of without when it come to Van's BBQ meats. Their spices and rubs really hit the spot. My hubs really liked the sauce, so one could say we are a house divided. Aside from a bit of a heavy hand with the salt, they have an amazing side of greens. And I mean GREENS! I couldn't stop eating them, it was so delicious Stop by Van's and try them out. Shawnee may have a reputation of producing little for the world besides plentiful casinos, meth labs, gambling addicts and criminals, but its proponents are quick to tell you that Brad Pitt was born there and Sonic Drive Ins were started there. A Hollywood A-lister is nice, but does that make up for plaguing the world with thousands and thousands of car stalls where you can pull up and scarf down a double cheeseburger and tots with the engine running, pumping out CO2 like there's no tomorrow? (guilty as charged!) Se7en was admittedly pretty awesome, but on the balance, not hardly! However, there is one thing that may bring redemption to Shawnee for all the ugliness borne of the Pott County region (yes that includes yours truly), and that is Van's Pig Stand. Van's started in Shawnee many moons ago, back in the prehistoric era (aka "the good old days" in Shawnee), when men were men and women knew their place. Over the ensuing decades they've been smoking up pork and beef slathered with their perfect sauce through world wars, oil booms, oil busts, social upheaval and all that, without skipping a beat. Sometime in the 1990's, Van's opened a restaurant in Norman, bringing their recipes, smoker and sauce with them. Some BBQ "aficionados" will tell you that good BBQ doesn't even need sauce, but these people are delusional and/or developmentally challenged. Van's BBQ sauce may be the best I have ever tried. Being raised on Van's BBQ has spoiled me for life. Van's brisket is amazing (chopped or sliced)... Their ribs are tender and fantastic.... And their pork sandwich ("pig sandwich") with a small dab of pickle relish is truly Shawnee's gift to the world. Put a little squirt (or a lot) of their heavenly sauce on it and it's like I'm instantly transported back to Shawnee, where you're always looking over your shoulder, always concerned that you may go outside to find your car vandalized (if not stolen outright), or that some hobos from the nearby train tracks may have used that rolled down window as an invitation to take a whiz. But that wonderful smoky smell and tangy sauce overcomes all. You have not truly lived until you've feasted upon a "Vanized" double baked potato, with a dollop of garlic butter melting on top. And Van's famous curly fries... and baked beans.. all the sides are top notch. At Thanksgiving, we order a smoked turkey from Van's and it is always an incredible bird, moist and tender and smoked to absolute perfection, which we feast upon for a solid week. Another wonderful item on the Van's menu which I often overlook are their burgers. It has always seemed a waste to me to visit Van's and not get BBQ, so it rarely happens that I order a burger, but given a recent Groupon promo I was reintroduced to them. And boy howdy, were they amazing. Honest to goodness, they were great. So great that I can actually envision future trips to my favorite BBQ place for a burger, insane as it may sound! Van's BBQ has been a constant presence my entire life and that is certainly one thing to be grateful for! read more

This was a no frills, local BBQ joint. I loved it. The ribs were better than I expected as I've had bad experiences with BBQ in OKC up to this point. Before each bite, I slathered a good helping of BBQ sauce on the rib meat. Yum! The meat wasn't fall-off-the-bone fork tender, but it was still pretty good BBQ. The BBQ sauce was awesome! The menu was flexible and I was able to order a rib dinner without all the sides. I just wanted the meat. That's it. Prices were very affordable. I was sad to read some mediocre reviews for this place. They have the best barbecue around. Their chopped beef is soo good. The ribs are excellent as well. The fries are hand cut and curly. The portions served are more than enough, but so yummy you won't want to share. All of their sides are delicious, if you like baked potatoes, you should try the "vanized" potato. Somewhat a twice baked potato with butter. Really excellent, They have yummy desserts now as well, too. I recommend the cupcakes. read more

Good yes, but not great. Everything at vans is good yes. I will agree to that but not out of this world great as far as I'm concerned. With my experiences currently I have yet to experience great barbecue in Oklahoma. Hopefully one day this will change. I've been going to van since I was in high school that was about 16, 17,18 I don't know too many years ago to count it seems like. Back then I thought this is awesome barbecue. Little did I realize I just really love the sauce everything else is just pretty good. The good thing about vans that it is probably will the best in the market. The brisket here it's pretty good probly the best thing on the menu. Next up the ribs well I think they leave something to be desired. The sides here are pretty good but nothing to really write home about. It seems the highlight to all all my visits here are the sauce. (Note if you don't like sweets of Vans of won't be for you. Because vans off is definitely a sweet barbecue sauce.) Any knowledgeable self respecting pitmaster will tell you the best thing you can say about a meat is it doesn't need the sauce. Unfortunately van needs the sauce. Will I be back to vans. Probably many times in the future. Like I said I really like this sauce. I usually will stop in and buy a bottle of it just for my own stuff at home. As well if there is a game in Norman and there's nothing better sounding that day, I might as well go to vans. I went to the restaurant in Moore, but I assume all of the locations are similar.... I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the food coming out of this hole-in-the-wall shop. Great BBQ sauce, good brisket, and the beans and coleslaw were good too! My friends tried the chopped pork and sausage and liked those as well. If you want great quality (fast food) BBQ, go to Dickey's. If you want cheap BBQ, go to Rudy's. If you want expensive, "meh" BBQ, go to Van's. I really don't see what the fuss is about. I got a sandwich with a side of fries to go. Although I ordered a chopped beef sandwich, they gave me sliced beef, which I wouldn't mind too much except it's happened on more than one occasion here. The bigger problem on this visit was the fries; they were so undercooked and greasy it was like a big pile of wet noodles. Either their cooking oil is not hot enough or they're putting too many fries in the fryer at one time, and based on the huge amount of fries they give you I'd assume that's probably the cause. I could only eat a couple bites of the fries and discarded the rest. Should be an easy fix to get their fries right, but nearly every time I've gotten fries there they were limp, greasy, and undercooked. read more

When I moved here from Texas, my husband took me to Vans. I have to say, being a native Texan- I am very particular on the bbq I eat. I was very impressed with their food, so much so- we eat here alot! Our office started ordering lunch there weekly as well. I am not sure what has happened over the past couple of months, but the service has gone WAY down! Between our office orders and my personal orders-- they have managed to mess up 12 out of 20 orders! In fact, one order was for our office- we picked it up and it was wrong. We went inside and they corrected it-- we did not check the second order because we THOUGHT it would be correct this time. We got back to the office and it was STILL wrong! We called and talked to the manager, who offered to drive it to us, which was great, BUT it was still wrong. We thought well maybe its just a bad day, nope we are still having in correct orders-however, we now check them before leaving and get them corrected. The other issue- our office orders online, to save time and we request curbside. The last 3 orders we have made, we order- wait about 10 minutes and go to curbside. We call them and they tell us oh we are just now making the order-- which makes us have to wait(almost every time, another 30-40 minutes). Now I understand mistakes happen, but its getting to where it is EVERY time we order. When you have an hour for lunch, you do curbside expecting it to be ready when you get there(to save time). This is not the case, our co-workers are spending almost an hour just to PICK up the food. So I have to say-- we have given this business so many chances to get back to where they used to be, that my office and my family have decided to not eat here any longer! This makes me sad, because their food is really quite good--when it is correct! read more

I had a craving for bbq which isnt often so I came to Vans since it was closest to my home. Its been a while since Ive been to this location because like I said I dont crave bbq very often. I ordered the chopped beef sandwich with a side of potato salad. I remember eating that last time I came and it was pretty good. Well I didnt have a great experience at all. For almost $10 for those 2 items and it was terrible. The sandwich was very small and loaded with grease and fat pieces. The bun was completely saturated with grease by the time I got home. The onion that I asked to be put on the sandwich was really cold causing my sandwich to be a little cold. The potato salad was awful! Not what I remember it being when I came last. It tasted and looked like the store bought potato salad. I dont remember it being that awful last time I came. You can tell when potato salad is freshly made and thats what it seemed to be the last time I came. I didnt even eat it. I had to remove the buns and eat some of the meat that was actually there. So $10 down the drain on a few pieces of actual tasting beef. Im so disappointed. The only thing that Vans has going for them is the ribs. Thats all! The curly fries are gross. Those are greasy and soggy all the time. The beans are no good. The greens are plain. This is probably the worse experience I have ever had to share on yelp. I really want my money back. For $10 I should be satisfied for the rest of the day but Im still hungry and that aint right! Horrible! Will never come back!! read more

It was very difficult finding Van's with the street construction right outside and no signs anywhere. Google maps kept telling us we were there so after detouring around several blocks we found a parking lot filled with big ass Ford pickups. Still nothing to tell us we had found Van's as the only signs indicated this was a Sinclair station ( those don't even exist do they?). A leaving patron carrying takeout saw our confusion and directed us to the entry and told us how to navigate to the order station. You can tell by now we are dedicated seekers of BBQ Meccas. I thought this place was the answer to our BBQ dreams when we saw the smoked meats just waiting for hungry diners. I ordered the brisket plate. The Texas toast and potato salad were fine but my brisket was more fat than meat. Seriously, when I finished slicing all the fat off I was left with 1/4 - 1/3 beef. My husband had the rib plate and he was happy with them but he's had better in a few places over the years. We won't be going back simply because of my brisket. Shame on any BBQ restaurant serving brisket like that. We wanted to love this place so badly and hoped it would become our go to place in Norman even though it was on the east side of town which is not a convenient location for us when we travel to Boomer Sooner town. read more

I have loved Van's since we moved here three years ago. I cannot BELIEVE that whoever made the decision to get rid of macaroni and cheese did so. I am extremely disappointed and to be honest don't know if we will be returning. I just had my first ever Van's meal without it, and I was unimpressed. I doubt that this has been a popular decision. I've been to Vans several times over many years. At one time it was good, however it has gone downhill and has gotten very pricey. - I've eaten at many local BBQ restaurants and so have a good basis for evaluation - My last visit was a short while back. I asked for a combo plate as I wanted to sample a few different styles of meat. I should have been paying better attention as my tab was well over $20.00 for only a typical sized plate of food. This entree wasn't anything special at all. Dry meats with only so-so sides, (potato salad and one other that I've forgotten) I didn't even eat most of this expensive entree. It just wasn't any good. I won't be back anytime soon ..if at all. Wanting some BBQ just a few days ago, I traveled to Leos BBQ in NE OKC.. - This opinion is for the Norman location only read more
