My sisters and I go to this place for the masa and the masa only! IMHO, their tamales are bad (we only tried the red ones). They lacked flavor and they were on the dry side, very dry! On our most recent trip there, I ordered half a dozen and I felt like I was carrying a bag of bricks. It was mostly masa. Tamales should be about quality not quantity. My family's tamales are on the thin side but they TASTE AMAZING...at least that's what all my ex-colleagues say. Every year they would look forward to receiving tamales when I would go into the office and it's PARTIALLY due to the fact that this place has good masa. Vargas is my hometown favorite "go to" for my lazy Saturday mornings and breakfast before church on Sundays. I've been going to Vargas for their awesome tamales since I can remember (at least 20 years!!). During my first pregnancy their green burritos were the only food I could eat, my morning sickness was so bad but Vargas was my one and only remedy. I remember walking over from visiting my parents nauseated EVERYDAY for my burrito fix, and it had to be from Vargas. Sadly, I am no longer living in Pico, and every weekend I die a little craving their chicken and red tamales. It's torture craving them and being 2,000 or so miles away in Minnesota where the Mexican food sucks and every tamal you try is a dry and unflavored blob of masa and you still have to be grateful that at least there's that. Nothing compares to my Vargas tamales! I must add that the staff is AMAZING! On two occasions, they have specially made tamales just for me and these have been driven and flown across the country to my tummy in Minnesota!! After being asked what I needed/wanted from Pico and I jokingly replied "Vargas tamales" they made that dream a reality. The staff went out of their way to make these for me after my brother told them that I was craving them and living in Minnesota. I love you Vargas, you hold a very special place in my heart. Today was my first time going to this place my husband said they had delicious Carne Asada I believe him, we ordered 3 Carne Asada Burritos and I saw the young lady weighing the meat I was SHOCKED so I asked when we were paying for the food I asked the cashier out of curiosity how much meat to you put in your burrito she said 3oz the burritos price 9.00 each and there was not much meat I tasted the beans and cheese barley tasted the meat I was very disappointed I did let my family know and friends know it was awful I Really I don't mind paying 9.00 but I want to have meat in there so I can enjoy it.That was my first and last time to go there read more

My other half introduced me to this place after frequenting it for years as a kid. It's a small little place, with only street parking in front. It doesn't look like much but the food is delicious. We ordered tamales, a carnitas burrito (all meat), and rice and beans. Their tamales were yummy. Since it was a Sunday, we got all three: pork with green sauce, red sauce, and green chile and cheese tamales. The rice was okay, but the beans were phenomenal. They were just simple refried beans, but it was made with lard (I'm guessing.) They're super authentic, and it makes my belly happy. The carnitas burrito (just meat) was pretty tiny, though. I loved the flavors, but instead of adding extra meat to fill in the burrito, they just omitted everything else. So, it probably would've been a big burrito if we got it just the way it was supposed to come (with rice, beans, etc). Next time I come, I'll just get try it with everything, because it's the same price regardless. Everything we tried, though, was so worth it, even if it was a little pricier. This is a family run, cozy, neighborhood take-out deli. Big menu and a loyal customer base. A friend of the family raved about the green chile burrito. The burrito was big and filling and the green chile sauce was excellent tasting but the beans were so-so. I have been coming here with DH for at least 26 years. The special quesadilla is so worth the effort it takes to get there. So amazing so small so YUM! If your looking for a sitdown resturant with people to bring you chips, salsa and waters, ah no. Not there. This is a take away. We usually grab lunch and go the park up the street off Beverly. My two favorites are a carnitas burrito with green chile & cheese or a chile relleno burrito with green chile...phew! Vargas has the BEST Mexican food (besides mom's, of course). My family has been coming here literally for decades. This is where we bought masa at Christmas to make tamales, so this place is steeped in some serious family traditions for me. When you walk in, you can see how REAL Mexican food is made and prepared as you watch. I wish some Chipotle people would come see how to make and fold a burrito (and what a real burrito tastes like), since their burritos always seem to have a bite of all rice, or all meat. That doesn't happen here--Vargas does things the old way, which is usually the best way. My parents are gone and my family has all moved away, but when I walk into this place all I can think about is family and days gone by. I imagine my dad ordering at the counter I'm now standing at. Memories ... and great food! Vargas is real, legit Mexican food. Just delicious. If you give it less than 5 stars, then you don't know what Mexican food is. I came in to try the tamales unfortunately I was disappointed, I was told these were to be some of the best around, maybe they meant best on that street because I tried a few tamales and they all had the same brown almost sweet mole sauce and made the chicken tamales taste like the pork tamales, maybe they screwed up my order but the mole sauce tamales is just not for me. We came home and enjoyed our little feast. All tasting very good. I had the Carne Asada Burrito with the Green Sauce. Sooo delicious.
