When my husband and I were first dating over 10 years ago, he introduced me to Vargas. This place is a little whole in the wall with no tables to sit down and eat or any cute decorations. I was not impressed. I asked him to order for me as I had no idea why we were even there. He ordered two burritos. A carnitas burrito and a carne asada burrito. Both with green chile. Still rolling my eyes, i asked him where were we going to eat? We literally found a parking spot on street and he opened the bag. i have been coming here for 40 some years and it hasn't changed .homemade enchilada sauce,chicharron are very good nice and spicy and they have fideo sopa daily. some things are not the the best like the taquitos are frozen ,but that what we grew up in the 1970 and 80;s frozen taquitos and water down guacamole, and reminds me of my younger days the hard tacos are homemade good taste but small .(i still like them).the staff is very friendly they diffrent things here youll like it read more

Some of the best places are and my goodness it's to die for, Their menudo is out of sight, their tamales are so moist and perfect, you'll be foolish to order "a few" .. I say, order more, trust me, after one you'll attack a second. I have had varies burritos there and the beans were juicy a reminiscent of home style cooking. It is family owned and operated. Vargas has literally been in my family for years.. My grand parents, parents, aunts&uncles, cousins...everyone whos Pico know Vargas. My usual is a carne asada burrito with cheese and green sauce..mmm.. there tostadas chile rellenos, tamales on christmas..tacos, wet burritos. its all good and thee best, nicest home cooked meal you can get! The origial lady is still there Irene at 70+...If ever she makes your food it may take a little longer but it so worth it cause she makes it best. I had read the great reviews on this place and thought I would give it a try. I went in on 12/24 yesterday at 4:00 PM to order 1dozen red tamales. They said they would be ready at 4:30 no problem I paid in advance and waited in my car. Went in at 4:30 they said another 20 minutes. So after a 55 minute wait I get home and start to prepare dinner. They looked great but the TASTE , I'm sorry but can honestly say they were the worst I've had in my 60 years. What was inside ? I have never ordered anything other than Menudo so I can't comment on anything else but I will say that their Menudo is the best I've tasted. It doesn't stink, it does not have grease floating on top, the tripe is cut perfect size, the hominy and tripe are balanced 50/50. We usually order their homemade corn tortillas and what ever tortillas we have left over, we use to make quesadillas the same day. I just had food from Vargas for lunch the other day. My colleagues get super excited when our co-worker's husband is going to make a stop before he brings her lunch. I finally decided to give it a shot. Everyone was raving about the Chile Relleno burrito. Let me start by saying I'm super picky about the Chile Relleno itself; I never eat it with a tortilla because I always thought it took away from experiencing the flavor of the main dish. I decided to suck it up and try the burrito. Man, it was SO delicious!!! I've been deprived all of these years! Sometimes it's tricky to eat my lunch in one sitting so my burrito got cold but it was STILL yummy! Lastly, I didn't feel bloated or disgustingly fat after I tore the burrito up. The best place you can find next to your moms home cooking! Lived about two blocks away and taste has never changed it's so good the Chile verde is just mouth watering. I've been coming here since I could walk. Masa has been ordered for tamale season you can let beat it. My usual order has been a Chile verde burrito but I change it up at times. You can't order one thing bad it's good. This is a family oriented they have been great staff is friendly you really can't beat that. My kids love it to lil Nieces. Dont understand how its been in business for so many years. The girl behind the counter kept acting like she didnt speak spanish when i spoke to her in spanish. But when the grandma behind the counter working with her spoke to her in spanish she responded and understood very well. Aside from that they were very rude and not courteous at all. I'm very dissapointed on my visit today. I've been coming for more than 20 years never had a complaint before. Today I asked the lady how's the chicharones today are they spicy hot I asked that because I have gall stones and I can't eat them too hot she told me no they weren't hot so I bought a medium container and I bought some refried beans. When I got home I ate one and it was so spicy hot fire bomb I couldn't eat them so I went back to tell them if I was able to get rice instead the owner lady got so furious with me that she told me that you never bring food back. I told her that I wasn't able to eat them can I get rice instead ? I wasn't happy on the way they were. Well things hot so bad she gave me my money back. And I told her please can I buye some rice she flatly refused to sell me anything she told me that I can't buye anything any more. I was banned forever Omg how I felt furious!!! I should have kept those stupid Flaming chicharones if I would have known she was going to be so mad. Question? Whenever you go to a place were they sell food if something is not right aren't the business should satisfy the customer and work with the customer so they leave in a happier manner. Oh how I love Vargas! As a kid my Great Grandma watched me while my parents were at work and she lived around the corner from Vargas so I used to eat this place a few times a week. Since I don't go out towards Pico too often it's rare that I get to get my favorite burrito but when I do get down there it's nice to see some of the same familiar faces that worked there back when I was a little girl. This is a smaller place as other reviewers stated but they always have a good traffic flow of customers going through there. This is a "to-go" type place since there is no seating inside so don't expect to stop in to sit down and eat. I always get the carnitas burrito with beans and cheese and add both their red and green sauce (since I can never choose which one I like better)....maybe there are other people who order that out there but I'm proposing that Vargas name this burrito "The Chella Bella". ;) read more

Wow, where do I begin. Vargas has changed so much and is not the Vargas I grew up with.. Read peoples stories and have to agree the ladies have an attitude with no personality. The food is tasteless and over priced.. I grew up in Pico and knew the ORIGINAL Vargas family personally and the food was DELICIOUS! Once the old grumpy ladies bought it years ago, it was down hill from there. I moved away and was in the area and thought I'd give it another chance, cause I USE to love the red burritos with chunks of beef. Nothing's changed with the slow working old ladies and no warm welcome, and,the red burritos was even worse HORRIBLE. The red chili was not red and the meat was not chunky. No flavor or spiciness.. The beans were lousy aswell.. I was so Disappointed, again. They are making their dishes with the cheapest ingriedients in turn it shows in their taste. Go back to how they use to make the food with love.. Sad it will never be that way again. I guess these grumpy old ladies personality is a reflection in the taste of their food.. YUCK! read more

This place has been here for many many years! I used to work at Rio Hondo College and I would pick up food for lunch. I'm retired now but I still make the 45 minute round trip to experience their food once in awhile. It's really good! I love the Special Quesadilla with green chile and the Chile Relleno burritos! Another thing that I have noticed is that everyone (the customers) in line are really polite and smile and talk to you like you are part of something that has been going on for decades!
