First time visit after living on Long Island for 52 years. I've driven by this hole in the wall at least once a week and never decided to stop until today. Hospitality, quaint little hole in the wall, specials galore. Not an overwhelming menu, but the food is overwhelming. On point, delicious, well prepared, and fresh. Highly recommend. The food was delicious. Let's get that out of the way. I had the crab corn chowder and the fried clam strips. It was just like being a kid again. It was wonderful. My lunch companion had the fish tacos and they were great. You may ask why only three stars? Well, the place is filthy -charming, but filthy. It needs a good cleaning. I just dropped by for a quick lunch, and I must say that I loved their food. Their clam strips are deliciously crispy, and their fish tacos taste great. Small hidden gem on maintain highway. I always have passed and wanted to stop and finally one day was today. I was cruising in my classic car just having me time and I stopped and had the cod fish and chips. It was so good. I talked to Kathryn/ Kathrin and Patty. Was down here for work... naturally I wanted some New England soul food... lobster rolls I do myself but I did want some fried cod and some scallops. Farney's is a nice little shackish joint.. and being it's Long Island a very very local crowd (Long Islanders tend to really provincial...maybe a function of geography... even the ones that have flooded Saratoga Springs in the last 10 years). Portions are a bit small but very fresh... and they do source locally per my waitress. Cod and scallops had a nice crispy breading.... almost like cornmeal. Fries are classic bag version and slightly wilted...pretty underwhelming but I wasn't here for the potatoes. My food and a pint of Greenpoint ale w tip was 56 clams. One star off for the price versus portion but it is Long Island and it was very good. Friendly staff as well. read more

Great server and attentive runner! My mom has been on a lobster roll mission. She has had 3 in one week! This was the third and she said it was by far the best. I had fried shrimp which had a cornmeal breading. The shrimp was tasty and not at all oily. The baked clams were not super flavorful. Chicken tenders were prepared like the shrimp and were a hit. Wow what a great place for dinner! I got the Baymen special and got a ton of food for the price. The mussels were incredible and I could almost drink the sauce. If I wasn't familiar with Varney's and I just walked in off the street, I would think twice about eating there since it looks unkempt & the walls a bit dirty. So a paint job would be nice. Went to Varney's recently with friends from out of town. It was perfect timing as there was only one table seated when we arrived, but by the time we left, there was only outdoor seating available!! The decor is local beach vibe and the restaurant is pleasant, bright and clean!! The service was pleasant and attentive, as always. The food was fresh and delicious! I had a cup of chowder and a lobster roll!! Yum!! My other friends were equally impressed with their meal! I felt it was well worth the $ we paid!! Service of our main waitress was very friendly and gave excellent recommendations which we loved. The first waitress who got us our drinks was a little tired, which I excused as it was a very busy lunch schedule. The French onion soup was great, but a bit salty for me. Oddly, my husbands wasn't as salty. We ordered the Fra Diablo plate for two which was made up of Snow crab, bay scallops, shrimp and mussels over linguini! We chose white sauce cause I prefer that to red sauce. Also on the side we were given Parmesan cheese and a small loaf of French bread. We were disappointed in the amount of the type Of seafood given. There were only 5 clams, 3 shrimp and one half of a snow crab portion. The rest was mussels and bay scallops. It is a charming place but the flours and table was sticky. I surely wouldn't eat anything that touched the table. The ladies room was neat and clean but my husband said someone threw up in the men's room and it's not like they ran into clean it. Amazing Lobster Roll, so we had both the hot version and cold version, equally enjoyable. We also had Bloody Mary's! We were staying in Bellport and considered going out but as we were a big bunch, we chose to get takeout and enjoy the beach vibes. We passed Varney's while we were driving and it looked packed. We decided to grab some mussels, some lobster rolls, a shrimp cocktail and some other assorted goodies. Staff was friendly and efficient even though they were slammed. We got out take out and drove the 5 minutes back to our hotel and it was still delicious and warm. Great little seafood shack. Would go back again. read more

We were around the neighborhood and saw that this place had outdoor seating. We chose this restaurant because we had our dog with us and dining outside was our only option. There's ample parking and the outdoor dining area is really cute. So we were looking forward to eating here. We went inside to let the workers know that we were dining outside. We sat down and was handed a menu and asked what we wanted to drink. As soon as our server came out with the beer, a bunch of bees came out! We thought we could just swat them off but these bees were relentless! The server came back out and told us that they'd had issues with bees and that a few of the employees got stung on occasion. Not something you want to hear. We continued to wait for the rest of our order, but more bees came. As we were swatting them off, one did a kamikaze dive right into the beer and died in there. Yeesh. We got our bee replaced and this time we got up and moved to another table ways away from where we were and no flowers around, no plants. Still more bees. So we finally had the last straw and asked to get our food to go. They complied and were very apologetic. We were annoyed but yet very gracious to them for getting our food packed to-go fairly quickly and that to get the hell out of there. Here's what we ordered: - mussels (white wine) - lobster roll (hot butter) comes with a pickle and fries - manhattan clam chowder The reason for my 3 stars is attributed to the food being satisfactory. The food was delicious and came out fast. This place lost 2 stars due to the bees and feeling rushed. When the server initially took our orders, we were able to order drinks an app and one entree, but I wasn't able to order my entree. She just walked away...i wanted to add my order when she came back but by then...the bees! When we told the server a bee died in our beer, she looked at us like we did something wrong. Where do I start. I have driven past Varneys for 40 years and today I finally wandered in. So freaking good. Started with baked clams and the mussels. The clams were delicious. A combination of clams, garlic, onion, breading and a hint of bacon. Tender and delicious. The clams in white wine and garlic served with a loaf of buttered Italian bread.. We asked for whole belly clams, though not on the menu. It's been a long time since I had such delicious clams. The Cosmos were on point and the beets frosty cold. I will be back, soon. 5 plus plus plus Highly recommend Great food, Great service Im really surprised that Varney's is only 3 1/2 stars. We almost skipped it based on the yelp rating. I rarely go into a place cold that has a Yelp rating under 4. However, we were drawn in by the lobster roll sign! Glad we stopped in! Varney's is a small quaint establishment along Montauk Highway in Bellport. The exterior visual is of a small New England roadside chowder house. There was a hand written sign that said "Lobster rolls". The "lobster roll" sign worked, it sucked us into the place. Varney's could easily be on a beachside road in Maine or elsewhere in New England. As you enter, the interior matches what you would expect to see on a movie set depicting a New England chowder house. I could almost imagine Chief Brody and Captain Quint from the original Jaws, having a lunch meeting at a back table. Mugs of steaming coffee and chowder on the table between the two men. Although the New England chowder house similarity is apparent, Varny's has its own unique Long Island clam and fish house theme and history. There are local shellfish and even Long Island duck selections on Varney's menu. At one time, the waters a few miles from Varney's supplied most of the Nations shellfish. Upon entering, we were greeted by our server who promptly seated us, took our drink orders, and answered our menu questions. Service was a 5 +++++. There are about 12 tables spread out in 3 separate dining areas. The layout gives some separation and privacy while maximizing useable space without crowding. The space is neat, clean, and efficient. Varney's created a good space to enjoy your meal in a relaxing, comfortable setting. There are white boards with menu items, daily specials, and a daily beer menu. They have a full liquor license. We were not drinking, but A gentlemen at the next table appeared to be enjoying a Scotch on the rocks. Thats cool! Varney's is more "luncheon" style than a super fancy table cloth dining room. The crowd appeared to be a mix of local regulars, "passer-by's", and families. Varney's seems family and kid friendly. Also there are non-seafood and kid options on the menu for non seafood people. As expected, The kitchen is is the rear of Varneys. The kitchen is somewhat visible to the patrons. I like that! You can see into Varney's kitchen and it appears clean and neat. A good sign! Nothing to hide! We had a cold Maine style lobster roll. The cold (Maine style) lobster roll is lightly mayonnaise-ed cold chunky lobster meat served in an overstuffed buttered and toasted hotdog style roll. The lobster roll was served with a full plate of delicious crinkle cut fries. The lobster was, fresh, flavorful, and the right tenderness. The mayo was just the the right amount to bind the lobster meat and subtly add a mild creamy and buttery flavor. The lobster roll was near perfect and may very well be the best regional lobster roll! Fantastic lobster roll! +++++++ Our server also recommended the fish sandwich with cod. Three word; WOW-WOW-WOW. The cod fish sandwich was a unique Masterpiece with a Long Island flair! The sandwich was constructed on a Long Island deli style poppy seed roll with lettuce and tomato. The roll was soft and airy inside with a flaky and barley crunchy crust. Perfect roll! They must source the rolls locally. You just dont see this style of roll outside of the region. The cod was battered and fried. The batter was crispy, light, with no oily greasy after taste or run off. The fried cod and fries alone would have made a great fish and chips meal by themselves. The sandwich was plated with delicious crispy non-greasy crinkle cut fries. Just a comment on the fries: Alot of very good establishments over look the rest of the plate and just dump a greasy, over or under cooked pile of cut salted potatoes as a plate filler. That is not the case at Varney's! Varney's crinkle cut fries are a flavorful crispy non-greasy plate garnish and compliment to the main event! Nice job on the fries Varney's! Almost forgot, i has a cup of Manhattan Clam chowder. It was clearly house made, packed with clams, flavor, and quite delicious! Dont skip the chowder! I should have got some to go! I washed it all down with bottomless homemade unsweetened iced tea. The bill was around $50 for 2 people, actually quite reasonable for what we ordered and enjoyed. BTW, I think, Varney's could be perfect stop over place if stuck in Hamptons traffic! I will return! I highly recommend Varney's. read more

We gave varneys another chance and were glad we did! We had a much nicer experience, were seated within 5 min even on a busy Saturday. I love finding local gems when I travel and this is for sure one of those spots. I wanted some fried sea food and they didn't disappoint. Ended up starting with sea food bisque and it was great. Never had anything like it so not much to compare to, but with crackers it was pretty great. We also had wings for the table (Buffalo) and the fry was perfect. Could have been spicier but that's just my opinion. Buddy had lobster tacos, which is not a thing but he asked them and they made it happen. I got a sea food platter with cod and clams. The breading was light, good crunch and a bit of cornmeal. I really enjoyed it. Only thing I wasn't in love with was the fries. They were bland, crinkle fries from a frozen bag I'm sure. A shame when everything else was so fresh and perfect. It's very small too. So get there early or at not so busy times. Service was amazing. Super friendly, super knowledgeable and made awesome recommendations. Even the local beer I had (blue point toasted lager) went perfect with my meal. All that for $100. Not bad at all. Nice little find in Bellport. 4.5 stars really. Came in with party of 4 - their website does not say anything about reservations, but definitely call and make one. Service started out a little slow, but super friendly with helpful recommendations. We had the lobster rolls (hot with butter), Philly steak sandwich and fish tacos. The lobster rolls went over well and fish tacos got two thumbs up. The Philly was more like a hot roast beef and was good, but a little too heavy on the gravy - made it feel very heavy. Three of us went for dessert - rice pudding and mousse. All seemed to enjoy them. The atmosphere here is fun and friendly.
