I've been to a few restaurants over here and so far this one was the best. we were seated promptly and you had a choice of sitting inside or on the outside deck. I ordered the New England clam chowder that was the best I had in a long time, plenty of clams and a creamy flavorful texture. Close to the ferry at Ocean Beach. Indoor and outdoor seating. Fast friendly service. The fish tacos were tasty. Grilled fish topped with mangoes and some other fruit, good salsa and guacamole. The burrito was not good. It was filled with some kind of rice pilaf with peas and carrots and grilled chicken. The food and service were great - seafood was super fresh - new england clam chowder was nice and chunky, and the shrimp in garlic sauce on linguine and garlic sauce was very good. For apps, the nachos were great - order with the ground beef. The salmon was excellent - large portion, crusted with pistachio. Burrito was also great - large, packed with chicken- Only downsides : baked clams small and a bit dried out. Came to Ocean Beach for the day to celebrate my husban's bday. I expected a casual lunch here but even for casual our experience was such a disappointment . I privately let the server know it was his bday and she didn't even say happy bday to him at any point during our time there Nor did she smile or say anything friendly at all at any point. When we first got seated i gor up to grab menus and she snapped at me for that. When the bill arrived, turns out the drink special didn't apply since we were at a table. Instead of just saying that, she gave me an unnecessary attitude when I asked about it and said she had already explained that when we asked. I never asked so she must've confused us with a different table. It was so unnecessar. I'm a server and this was awful service. I'll def never go back. My daughter also didn't like her burger so we ordered a different kids meal. We didn't get the full meal, just the chicken since the burger came with fries but they still charged us full price. People probably love this place, I'm not one of them unfortunately. It takes a lot for me to be grossed out, a lot. I am willing to try anything food wise, if I don't like it, I'll check it off my list, no big deal. However the steamed clams we were served yesterday afternoon almost made me hurl, I've never been so disgusted by anything served to me in a restaurant. We were undecided about where to go for lunch, mostly because there really is not one solid, consistent, guaranteed always good restaurant in Fire Island. I had been to Albatross before years ago so when we saw shrimp cocktail on their specials board we decided this was the spot. It was around 1:30 in the afternoon on a Sunday and there were only two other tables occupied outside on their patio and some people enjoying Sunday Funday at the bar. Their patio is nice because you can people watch the town but you dont have a water view. It is also a nice spot to be at if you're waiting to catch the next Ferry as you're able to see the line start to form from right outside of the restaurant. They had a $10 shrimp cocktail special and a $15 steamed clams special. Our server was great, young girl who was attentive and friendly. We inquired about how many shrimp came with the shrimp cocktail and there were only 3 so we asked for 2 orders of shrimp cocktail, an order of steamed clams and I also added in a LARGE mixed greens salad. Large being capitalized with a purpose. The steamed clams came out and I wanted to hurl. They came out covered in dirty with the rubbery tails still attached. I do not have a queasy stomach, like I said earlier, I'll try anything but these were disgusting. Clearly being that they were a special, the people in the back weren't doing anything sanitary in regards to prep work. These clams were tossed in a bowl and served. I can't get the vision of the filthy rubber tails out of my mind. Shrimp cocktail came out shortly after. Three shrimp, nothing special about them, not bad, not great. Just standard shrimp with poop veins still in them, again, a special so no prep work done to make them more appealing for customers. Next came the larged mixed green salad, which was laughable. This was a side salad portion at best. I ate it in four bites. For $10, advertised as a large salad, it was definitely something I wish I hadn't ordered. Adding chicken or another protein would have jacked the price up to $18 and I'm telling you right now if that salad was brought to me with a 4 ounce portion of grilled chicken for $18 I would have said no way. The onion on top was slimy and past it's use by date. Sigh. We got two bud lights, two white claws, the only flavor they had was black cherry, two orders of shrimp cocktail, steamed clams and a mixed green salad. It was the fastest $86 I have ever spent and not worth the money at all. I would have much rather go to the deli next door and ordered sandwiches to bring with us on the ferry home for $20. I will skip this place next time, for sure. read more

Hey Albatross, if you had no signage asking folks not to swing the lights, I feel like no one would swing the lights. But you tell drunk idiots not to do something, then damn it they will not be able to handle the psychological burden* of not doing it. I'm personally cursed with drunk idiot friends that just want to swing lights all the time, when all I want is to drink in peace, without swinging lights giving me a headache. So I don't love Albatross all the time. But I like it most of the time. There's darts, and Vlad the awesome bartender knows his biz. He'll even fresh-squeeze some grapefruits if you ask nicely. (That isn't a euphemism, they just serve a good greyhound here). He's also the first bartender in recorded history to refuse a slice of pizza, which in hindsight probably did not speak well of the pizza. I also want to say nice work on the decor, Guy Who Designed The Albatross. I'm not normally a trough guy, but the troughs in your bathrooms are really quite tasteful. Long story short: great food, great prices! We were looking for both seafood and non-seafood options to please all. There seemed to be a good mix of restaurants on the main strip, but Albatross offered a nice amount of seafood apps and entrees as well as poultry - and all for reasonable prices! We ordered clams and calamari to start. The clams looked nice and meaty and I was told they tasted very good (I'm personally not a fan of raw fish unless it's wrapped in a sushi roll). We also ordered the Mediterranean calamari; you can order Cajun style or original with marinara sauce, but we wanted to try something new. The Mediterranean style was very tasty - garlic, herbs, olive oil, Parmesan cheese. One friend got a tuna sandwich/burger ordered rare, my boyfriend ordered the supreme burger (beef), and me and my other friend ordered the Buffalo Chicken Wrap special (a usual order for myself). All of our plates were eaten clean! The tuna sandwich was very interesting to me as I had not seen one before; it was generously meaty and received a great review. I have to say I LOVED the Buffalo wrap, it had the perfect amount of spicy chicken, lettuce, and tomato. I did ask for blue cheese on the side for my fries. The only somewhat negative comment I heard was that the salted ale didn't taste very different compared to a regular blonde type ale. Other than that, we all loved everything! Had late lunch/or early dinner at about 4:30. It seems this time on Fire Island is not the best time to eat since dinner menu is not used yet. We had two appetizers and an entire. The steamers were awesome! Some of the best I've ever had. On hindsight this would have the perfect meal for me and I should have stopped there. Also had the shrimp dumpling appetizer. Most people would likely have loved this, but I don't like fried dumplings and forgot to check. Finally, we also split a quesadilla which was ok - black beans were included inside and while I love black beans, I did not like them in the quesadilla . The menu "specials" is what caught my eye to try the place out. I walked around and viewed other menus at the other restaurants first, but ultimately came back here because I was craving the certain dish they featured on their specials listed outside. When walking in, I was a bit taken back by how small it was inside. Only a few tables to eat, and then a bar. It was empty inside so it really was not an issue to have a wait on this specific day. But if you are here during the Summer, I suggest you come during the non-peak meal hours. I ordered one of the specials which is why I chose this place for lunch to begin with. The Shrimp Taco Salad which was $17. My mom basically ordered the same but instead ordered the Garden Salad for $8 and added shrimp for additional $8 so realistically same price. When presented our meals, the portions looked big...but don't be fooled. They served the salads on these huge deep dish plates but when you look underneath..there was barely any lettuce to feed a rabbit. For an entree salad, I would expect more than a measly cup of lettuce. And as for a "taco salad" there wasn't much "taco" about it. It was topped with a few slices avocado, and garnished with onion, corn, black beans, cheese and stale tortilla chips. Usually a taco salad you expect some chopped or shredded iceberg or romaine, and served in some sort of taco shell with salsa, guacamole, sour cream, etc. This was not enough to satisfy. I got the 4 jumbo shrimp which were seasoned and really good, but just was very disappointed with the salad which was the whole point of the meal. The dressing they served was more of a cocktail sauce and too spicy, so I asked for ranch instead. My mom's salad was basically the same and she could not agree more with the portions. She was still hungry as well. Although the food and portions were nothing to rave about, the waiter was very nice and attentive. We had the mediterranean calamari that was pretty good, the little beck clams that were regular size clams, the kids had chicken fingers and pasta with sauce and a French onion soup. Our fist time in Fire Island we went to Ocean Beach. We yelped the reviews and this place seemed to get good ones and I was craving little neck clams. So 10 of is in our party. The server was on top of us for our order and drinks which was good after food came that was it. I had to ask twice for napkins and lemons. The straws for drinks were made of paper which disintegrate. The little neck clams were not little necks but were ok anyway. The Mediterranean fried calamari with the fried Italian peppers were delicious! The nachos were better than expected but didn't need the lettuce. The chicken fingers the kids didn't care for and left them, the kids pasta for the 10 bucks was pitiful. The fried filet sandwich was fine. The rib plate plentiful. The kids entrees come with ice cream but no drinks. Over priced restaurant. The ladies room was dark and dank and had nothing to dry your hands with. The lights over the bar are all the hanging type and sure enough, the ceiling all around them are scarred up from the swinging action. This is a great bar located in the land of NO. Conveniently located right near the ferry landing it is a good place to start and end the weekend out on Ocean Beach. They have bar food that is pretty decent and the place rocks all night with the day trippers and the summer rental peeps. read more

No problem waiting on busy Saturday. BIG PROBLEM with wife and 4-year old getting screamed at and asked to leave at by the OWNER for having the audacity to want water. Here's how it went down. Very nice waitress came and took our order. Bus boy came and delivered water to the 3 tables around us. Ten minutes go by, I ask the bus boy for water. He disappears. Five minutes later, I get 3 glasses from the bartender and grab water from the busser's station. At this point, the head food runner comes up and asks what the problem is. I tell him. He says "talk to the owner." I say "sure." Owner comes over. I tell him the problem. He say's "it's the head food runner's fault, not his." I say the "fish rots from the head down." He leaves in a huff, comes back and yells at my wife and 4-year-old, who is happily coloring, that the order ticket only went in 5 minutes ago and we could either stay and shut up or leave right now. Guess what we decided to do when screamed at? Issue wasn't the order ticket. Or the wait on a Saturday night. Or even having to serve our own water. As we were leaving, the very nice waitress asked "what happened"? At which point, head food runner positions himself in front of me asking if I'm leaving or staying. I say I'm just telling the waitress the problem. He makes like he's threatening me, I ask if he's gonna assault me in front of a room full of people. Yes, you definitely should swing the lights. When the sun sets on Ocean Beach, Albatross is one of the go-tos for locals and vacationers alike. One of their premiere attractions are their hanging pendant lights that bar flies spin in circles, and while there are signs that read "please don't spin the lights," it's an empty threat, as even the bartenders get in on the swinging action. Who knows there the stunt started, but it's become something of a rite of passage when spending time on Fire Island. Aside from the lights, it's a pretty standard dive bar. Perhaps their most notable cocktail is the greyhound, which gets freshly squeezed on the spot.
