My go-to pizza is the Porreca Piccante which includes fresh mozzarella, hot soppressata, Nduja (spicy spreadable pork sausage in ragu sauce), cherry vesuvian tomatoes, hot Italian peppers, Pecorino Romano, basil... So, I've returned to Varuni Napoli for more visits and must say, the experience was spectacular. Over the course of the year, you can tell that the restaurant matured into being much more than an improved Antico and developed its own style. Let's go through this point by point: - COOL VIBES. First and foremost, the ambiance is very cool. You can see everything being made, the cleanliness was impressive given the number of things going on. Italian music playing in the background at a great volume that allows for conversation without shouting. The patio is like a little oasis of its own, with couches and tables. - CASUAL, BUT CLASSY. From the outfits of the servers to the knowledgeable folks working here, the atmosphere is a great mix of casual and classy. You can easily wear shorts here or whatever you prefer, at the same time the staff is knowledgeable and nice. For example, the employee at the bar gave us a description of all the cocktail infusions they have, such as house made limoncello, arugula infusion and others. - SPACCA NAPOLI IS A MUST. My favorite pizza on the menu that I've tried so far, loaded with mushrooms, Tellagio and caramelized onions. The crust was excellent, I have to say much tastier than it was a year ago when I visited. PROSECCO ON TAP. Enough said, get it. TIRAMISU was great. Not over-sweetened at all, which was nice. Much heavier on coffee than Tiramisu, so don't plan to go to sleep anytime soon. PISTACHIO CANNOLI is a must if you are picking out a desert, along with PASTIERA. What delicious truly italian pizza. It's been a minute since I've had pizza that truly reminds me of italy and this place was able to do it. I ordered the white sauce Mamma pizza. It came with delightfully smoked mozzarella, sweet cherry tomatoes, fresh arugula, Prosciutto and Romano cheese on top. The uncooked cold meats really sent me back to italy with this dish. The crust was nice and thin traditional to napolitano pizza and the ingredients on the pizza really worked well together and was presented beautifully. Through the open kitchen, you can see the dough​ being hand-stretched and then cooked at extremely high temperatures in a wood-fired oven to achieve the ideal texture of the pizza base. They offer pizza in generally two categories, white base and red base, distinguished by the amount of cheese and the use of tomato sauce. Personally, I favor the red base more as I found the white base was a little bit too cheesy. I got tired of it after the first two slices. But go for it if you're big on Chinese​. Overall, I think Varuni Napoli is among the top three in the midtown area with respect to the quality of the pizzas. Pizzeria at its best! My test in food is if they do the simplest items properly, then their probability of delivering complex items is much greater. So we had Neapolitan signature, Margarita. It had perfect dough, fresh basil fragrance, enough but not over whelming tomato sauce with fresh buffala. I literally inhaled the slices!!! So so good. Also tried their tiramisu and Nutella cannoli. Their tiramisu is outsourced but it's about authentic Tuscan recipe as it gets. I didn't post pictures of the dessert b/c we ate them faster than the pizza. Luca, the owner is friendly and charming. Ordering is fast casual and besides pizza, they offer a few appetizers, salads, gelato, desserts and wine. Gelato is quite good with the chocolate being the best. Ambiance is bright and open dining room with a full view into the kitchen. It's a welcome change to Antico with sufficient climate control (AC) and they have a bus boy who comes often to clear the dishes away. Another positive is that there's an ample parking in the back . You grab your food from the vendor/shop and find yourself a spot to eat. You are most likely going to have to share your table or even hit your elbow with the stranger sitting next to you. It adds to the ambience. However, some shops, like Varuni Napoli, have their own bar seating so you can grab a stool there. The market has an attached parking deck, which is free larking, but it also gets filled up pretty easily. Otherwise there's street parking for free or pay a few bucks to get a parking spot around. Review: it's a three start for (1) the food was not-too-bad but not -So-great either (2) choice of meat options. Yes, Italian cruising is a lot bout sausage but it would be nice if Varuni could introduce some beef or chicken in the menu. Bit I must say - their dough was SO fresh and flaky. Tucked behind Varuni Napoli's dining room sits a hidden garden patio with a leafy tree canopy, tons of shade, comfy couches, and a Koi pond. It's a small oasis in the heart of the busy city that's perfect for a date night or even after dinner drinks and dessert. Sitting on the patio, we sipped on a white sangria while dining on delicious Neapolitan style pizza and being pampered with the delightful desserts. It was the perfect early Saturday dinner. Let's dig in. If you didn't know, Neapolitan style is known as wet pizza, that can be eaten with a fork and knife. It's typically hard to pick up with a soft crust near the middle and we dig it. The two we tried were the Bastardo and the Pako. Starting with the Bastardo, it's one of those dream pizza's that has everything, like the perfect flavor of the cheese and pepperoni and some of the best sauce ever! The sauce, known as Nduja, is spicy with a blend of the Calabrian chili and chili oil mixed with ground up pepperoni, sausage, pancetta, and other types of meat. They dolloped it on and it really was one of those pizzas you didn't need any salt, garlic, or even parmesan on the top. Amazing. Don't know if you know but I (Liz) have a threshold issue with dairy, so I asked if they could do one pizza without cheese and they said absolutely, so we got a Pako that boasts of sausage, onions, pepperoni, red peppers, mushrooms, all just without the cheese. Just because you don't have cheese doesn't mean you can't get a ton of flavor out of your pizza! With the spiciness of the sausage, tender pepperoni, and a mound of veggies, there was no lack of flavor from the Pako. What made this pizza was the caramelized onions and paired with the sausage and pepperoni was the perfect combo. What's a specialty pizza restaurant without some surprisingly delicious desserts and a good cocktail and wine list? When you arrive, we'd recommend starting off with something refreshing, like the white sangria! A perfect mix of white wine, citrus forward lemon, as well as the right amount of fruit like apple! It's the perfect patio sipper that's one-part cool and one-part fresh. They also have a full beer list with local favorites, as well as a large wine list! Salut! After your meal, leave room for a dessert or two like the build your own cannoli or tiramisu! Of the ones we tried, the cannoli was perfectly fried and the cream was light, lemony, and had a lot of chocolate chips. Crunchy and creamy! What, out of 234 reviews, no love for the Friariello pizza? Well, I'm here to show my appreciation for this particular pie. Our group came here on a weeknight to find Varuni Napoli bustling and busier than we'd expected. Positive signs right off the bat, and we hadn't even eaten anything yet. Parking was a cinch in the lot behind the restaurant. We were lucky to nab a table; it's first come first served regarding the seating situation. It took me forever to decide but after making up my mind that I wanted a white pie, I chose the Friariello ($20) since it sounded pretty delightful. Description from the Varuni Napoli website: "Fresh buffalo mozzarella, rapini, Italian sausage, diced prosciutto di Parma, EVOO and Pecorino Romano" I like how the pizzaiolos (a word I learned from reading the Yelp reviews for Varuni Napoli) don't skim on the sausage and cheese. Maybe more rapini would be nice, but I can deal. The crust was great with a bit of chew and not too burnt. The slices were not too floppy too, awesome. I'll admit I had some pizza envy when admiring the pies of the others, but once I chomped into my Friariello, all that went out of the window. The other folks were all jazzed about their pizzas as well. What added to the enjoyment of the pizza was the warm and friendly service. Despite no official table service, there was a smiling manager-type guy who checked on us periodically and made sure we had what we needed (more water, to-go boxes). The fellow taking our orders up front was super nice too. The main dining room was toasty, likely due to the open kitchen and pizza ovens basically being right there. Yessssssssss I will further my review with an explanation. This pizza was amazing. I went on a diet before I went on vacation (no pizza and pasta for two months) and I wanted my first pizza back in the game to really change my life and this one did. I ate 7/8 slices in the first sitting as well as a whole serving of tiramisu. I ordered the Porreca Picante ($21) and I LOVE that they have a signature "spicy" pizza. They have peppers, Ragu, sausage, and pepperoni. The peppers they used aren't just ground red chili flakes, they're legit peppers and def have a little heat to them but I always ask for a side of peppers or chili bc I like my food super spicy. I loved the sauce, it was perfectly mild with the tiniest sweetness which went amazingly with the saltiness of all the meat and the spices on the pizza. The crust was perfect and it was just soft enough in the middle to feel authentic but I didn't have the cheese and topping slide everywhere which I hate. I highly recommend this pizza!! Honestly the tiramisu ($6) might have been the best I have ever eaten. Literally. I looked at it and I was like aight cute. But then I had a bite and I think I blacked out bc I was watching like 30 seconds of the Incredibles and I looked down and it was GONE. The crème was sooo light and delicately sweet and the bottom layer of lady fingers still had a slight alcohol flavor while the middle and top ones were just perfectly moist (yeah i hate that word too). I want to order a whole sheet pan full. I will 100% come back and I love how they have appetizers and stuff too rather than just pizza so I'll be back to try those! Food: my food came out fairly quickly within about 8 minutes of ordering leading me to believe that my pizza was not cooked to orders. I have previously reviewed the other location for Varuni's in KSM and this is the first time we actually got to eat at this location. Stunning pizza as you would expect but some slight differences. This pizza place serves the authentic Italian pizza. They make the crust perfectly that manages to stay thin, not get soggy and holds up all its toppings. The important difference between this location and its twin sister in Krog is that the pizzas here are slightly bigger. While at Krog I can eat a single pizza to myself, this one I can generally get away with eating just half. Other than that, they have all the same ingredients and toppings. Got a chance to try their meatballs which comes 3 to an order and are awesome! I always order the margharita pizza and add sausage and salami as toppings. They have the perfect amount of sauce and the toppings are delicious. The service here is fantastic with people constantly checking in to see if you are enjoying your food and then thanking you for stopping by. People really seemed to enjoy their work and had pride in their food. Makes all the difference when you're sitting there eating what is possibly the best pizza in Atlanta. This location is located right next to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens so you can go over after cocktails in the garden. For starters, the staff is so helpful and welcoming. We had multiple staff members ask if we needed assistance throughout the visit and the cooks even waved on our way out. For the grub, of course had to go with the tried and true Margherita pizza. Could taste how fresh all of the ingredients were and the mozzarella and crust were especially delicious. Also got a cannoli for dessert and while I'm no cannoli sommelier, this one was great so would definitely recommend if you're still hungry post pizza. I have never written a review for a restaurant before, but after this experience I felt inclined to do so. My S.O. and I arrived at the restaurant around 8:25PM, and promptly placed an order for dine in around 8:30PM, hoping that we would be served quickly so that we could leave appropriately before closing.... After waiting for about 25 minutes for our food, we had to flag down a server to ask about the status of our food (as none of the other servers took the time to ask if we had been served). He went into the kitchen to find out our food had not been started and they had closed the kitchen. The server came back to let us know that they would still make the food and that we were okay staying at the restaurant past closing due to the mistake. After finally getting our food, about midway through our meal, a busboy came and aggressively removed our plates and mocked and laughed at us when we said were not finished eating and that we had been given permission from other staff to stay and finish the food and beer we had paid for. After a debating with the busboy to allow us to continue our meal in peace, he returned the plate (after touching the plate and the cutlery) and left. At this point, I sought out who the manager to ask if we had ordered our food too late and if this was the restaurant's way of letting us know that next time we need to either: a) order further in advance or, b) take the hint and order take out. Although the manager expressed his regret about the outcome of the situation and said he would investigate how/why this occurred, his only compensation for the whole outcome was too offer us a free meal the next time we came in. Which is fine, but ultimately places rectification of the situation on us to return to this establishment when that particular manager is in. Long story short, all the food is good (really the pizzas are great), but the staff can and will treat you like trash while permitting you to stay late, yet openly mock you and touch your food.
