My wife and I visited the chicken place next door then sat down for a drink outside Vaughn's. The cocktails were amazing. We decided to come back a few days later for another round of drinks and ordered food. I truly expected typical bar food, but I couldn't be more wrong. The food was exceptional to match the drinks. With outside dining it has been a good place to bring the kids as well. The bartender/ waitresses are the best too. I also liked their loyalty program. Day 3 of sheltered-in order was St Patrick's Day and we ordered delivery from Vaughan's. Of course like everyone else, we had wanted to partake of this day from the comforts of our home and they were overwhelmed. Got a call from the restaurant as one of dishes was sold out and they asked if I was willing to swap out for something else. I could tell they were slammed and in the weeds, but the lady on the phone was so apologetic and kind. This was our first time ordering from them and we were not disappointed. I just had the most bizarre interaction with these folks. I went in on a Friday night, pleasantly full, got a stool, ordered a beer & fish-n-chips. Beer selection is standard Chicago, chips were fine, fish was VERY good. Got 2nd beer. 2nd beer was plopped, inadvertently, onto my dinner & into my lap. I refused the proffered comp dinner as I was mostly done. I finished the replacement beer. Was then ignored for 30+ minutes, but needed to leave, as aforementioned mishandled beer had soaked into my underwear. Put down a 20 and walked to my car. Was chased out into the snow asking for more money! ("I can't authorize that!" or some crazy BS.) Too bad, as I had initially wanted to ask to bring my club here, would've been ~50 people on a once-a-month basis. Can't do that now. ... Now reading other reviews... f&c is AYCE? The beer is great. The food is ok. The French onion soup was about 4.5 stars of 5. Curry wings were about a 3.5. Mac piggy (Mac and cheese with sausage and bacon was around 4 stars And was really thick cheese which we liked. Some of the other bad reviews I read about this place are a little misleading. I hope this place has a post covid-rebirth. Nothing on their menu reflects an Irish Bar. My friends ordered the Buffalo chicken wrap with chips and the wrap lacked sauce and seemed like a low budget sysco order. I also had the tavern pizza which was a little worse than $3 frozen jacks. It was very doughy. Lastly the queso dip was clearly store bought tostiotos and microwaved and not made in house. Either way this isn't a Irish bar nor worth your time. (Edit. The legitimately kind folks here refunded me the entirety of the missing sandwich. That along with the other positive reviews is why three stars instead of one. My experience was probably very rare. I have a feeling this was an off night for these kind folks). Sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats from the uncovered dumpster in the alley behind Vaughan's Pub. After finding a coupon for free delivery and 25% off on Grubhub (perhaps a gentle whisper of a clue) for this old Chicago joint I ordered a baked chicken sandwich (because chill out Michael) and Parmesan fries (because I got a baked chicken sandwich!) and when it arrived I opened my dinner box to discover four pieces of cold fried almost meatless chicken and four plain wet French fries. Four. Which to me is actually pretty funny. Just four old wet depressed fries sitting by what was chicken that may have last drawn breath in the Cretaceous period. My kids ordered the sausage flatbread and they got a soggy rectangle of bread with old tomatoes and some undercooked cheese on it. My son looked at it and actually called it a "dreadful impression of pizza". Which I gotta give him a bit of credit for. I also ordered the giant pretzel with pub cheese for everyone and got instead fossilized pretzelish matter with a side of cold baked beans instead of cheese. The cold baked beans was a stroke of almost evil genius. Yum. Cold baked beans and remicrowaved pretzel. A Manson family favorite. The one upside was that the folks at Vaughn's (at least the person on the phone) were (all judgmental zingers only funny to me aside) very very nice when I called and they took a whole (cue sad drumroll backed up by even sadder trombone) 7 bucks off the order (which also to their credit I didn't discover the pizza and pretzel issues until after my phone call about the fried chicken mixup and had decided that calling back probably would be an exercise in Faustian futility). My suspicion given the professional and kind person on the other end of the line is that they have someone in the kitchen who is from outer space and has never seen human food before. The combinations of starches and proteins are confusing to his zinc based brain. Too much humans! Too weird!! Does not compute!!! Syntax error!!!! The other possibility is that it was almost closing time for online orders and they just didn't care... but that's no fun. I'm sticking with the alien thing. I'll benefit the old well worn doubt here and chalk this up to a rough night for the folks at Vaughan's because judging by the online reviews most folks seem to dig it. It's dreadfully hard to mess up pizza and baked chicken sandwiches but perhaps what showed up to my house on a rainy October night was someone's grad-school thesis Dadaist art project. I don't know. Complaining online is such a sad and depressing act...so you know...I got that going for me. 2 stars because the nice person on the phone reminded me of my Mom and you can't get mad at your Momma. read more

I really liked this place. The atmosphere is beautiful, with TONS of natural woodwork. They have a good selection of beer, and it is reasonably priced. In addition to the beautiful atmosphere, and great beer, we had teriyaki chicken wings that were great. They were a little greasy, but what are wings without a little grease? By the way, I should mention that we ordered them after 11:30PM. So, that's also a plus, that you can order that late. Great place that reminded me of some of the pubs I visited in small towns in Ireland. It's very European in that the bartender typically waits on all the tables too, so if you're looking to binge drink, this may not be the place for you if you're planning to consume lotsa adult beverages in a small amount of time. It's well off the beaten path, unless the beaten path is Northwest Highway, in which case you've lucked out because it's right there. Lots of street parking, though you should not attempt to drive home after enjoying a bit of the craic, and the transit access isn't so hot. If time is not of the essence, and you're looking for a cozy, comfortable place to relax with good friends that also offers some might fine specials, well, you have arrived. read more

Consistent fish n chips here. It's what I get pretty much every time I go here now that I don't eat chicken or meat and they're always good. I don't appreciate other Irish pubs saying fish and chips and then serving rock hard fish with shoestring fries. Chips are what we Americans know as steak fries...not shoestring! They set the bar pretty high here in regards to their Irish fare, I've yet to try a place that comes close. They also have great specials throughout the week, weekends too. I really, really, really like Vaughn's. I work nearby but it is still far enough that if i go, nobody will know me there. Sometimes you want that. Many times at lunch, my buddy and I would go in and grab a seat at the bar. The Irish bartender, which i believe is the owner maybe, tells us tales of her childhood and then proceeds to watch sports and talk shit. It's great. Vaughn's has a dive-bar feel but with a great pub environment. You feel like you are in a pub in Ireland and everyone is down to earth, laid back and cool to talk to and be around. They also have great specials, a great menu and great beers on tap. So why 4 stars instead of 5? Well, they used to serve "Matilda" on tap and they removed it recently. It's hard to find Matilda anywhere so it was a huge plus for me. They still have great things to substitute but Matilda from the bottle just isn't the same. read more

The Stanger, in all his mightiness was drag racin' the Stange down NW Hwy lookin' for some strange last Thursday when something caught my eye. $1.75 Miller Lite pints!!!!!!!!!!!! The Stanger did a quick doughnut in the middle of the street to show all the babes watching how the Stanger rolls, and did a completely bad ass maneuver into a parking spot. There was no time to waste on the simple things, the Stanger needed one of those cheap Miller Lites quick. Q: Stanger, how did it go? Was it cool? Stanger, bro, you haven't said anything about the bar? A: Hold on dorks, Stanger is slammin' a cold one. Stanger got his brew from the frumpy lass behind the bar. She could have been quicker about it, but she was busy yelling at the kitchen staff. Stanger loves the drama. Stanger thought about watchin a little tv while enjoying his brew, but Stanger forgot his glasses and could barely see the picture on the 19" tvs. Not sure if they got a deal on computer monitors but why they have such small TVs is beyond the Stangers realm of comprehension, but then again, so is basic math. As Stanger has eluded to in the past, Stanger is a meat eatin' son of a gun, had some wings and a steak sandwich...both of which were prepared to perfection by the incompetents in the kitchen. This is a good pub. It's the kind of place where you won't just see guys sitting at the bar. You will see families eating here with their children. I always think that is a good sign. I like this place for the wings. Monday's are half price appetizer day and that's when I try to good because the sampler plate is only about $10. And $10 for a huge plate of wings, cheese sticks, onion rings and fried mushrooms is a good deal on a normal day so when it's half price it's a crazy deal. This place isn't a dump like the other reviewer said it was. If think is pretty clean when you look at other places. The steak sandwich is good and so are most things. I just had a buffalo burger that was a little overcooked. I asked for medium rare knowing that buffalo can be a little tough. But that was one time and usually the food is real good. Great pub. Never had anything on the menu I didn't like. I will devour the Santa Fe burger in a matter of minutes and can eat many, many mini-cheeseburgers. Servers are always nice. What a cute little neighborhood bar! It's definitely an Irish bar. I had the luck of going there for the first time the weekend before St. Patty's day for their Friday All you Can Eat Fish and Chips special. It was a Friday during Lent, and I was on a search for a fish fry in Illinois. I settled on fish and chips. With the St. Patrick's Day festivities going on, it was difficult to determine if the lack of a seat at 7pm on a Friday was due to the popularity of the bar, or the fact that many people were out celebrating the holiday early. In any case, we took the one open table they had upstairs (yes, there's an upstairs), ordered up a couple beers immediately, and put in for our fish and chips. It was loud. Really, really loud. Again, I think it was part of the festivities related to St. Patrick's Day weekend, but Irish music was blaring through the speakers, one of which was located directly above us. Plus, pretty frequently during the evening, there were two lovely Irish dancers dancing up and down the aisles of the restaurant. It was fun to watch, but I think that Irish dancers wouldn't be an everyday occurrence. Due to the place being packed, service was a bit slow, but nothing that was unexpected given the amount of people there. We weren't checked on very frequently, but we were asked if we wanted another round of both beer an fish. I declined, but my husband enjoyed more. As for the food itself, it was good, especially given how much food they must have been preparing. The fish was cooked well in that it was nice and crispy on the outside, but not overdone on the inside. The fries were OK, I mean I ate them all, so that says something. Never again. When you walk in this place hits you with the nastiest smell. I'm so glad I'm not a local and have better options. I feel bad if this is a family establishment but maybe if some maintenance was considered this place can be brought back to life and not be so empty and stinky any more. My family and I have been coming here on and off for a few years now. We haven't come since the start of the pandemic. This is mostly because the waitress who usually serves us, Anne, is usually rude and passive aggressive. We decided to give the pub another try. This time, we waited longer than necessary for our check. She looked at our table several times while we were waiting, directly into my sisters eyes, and still didn't come over. She then made a sarcastic comment to my sister when she went over to the counter to pay (we got tired of waiting for her to care enough to come over) saying "according to our system you haven't been here since 2019. You know we've been here this whole time." We aren't obligated to eat at this pub, and it's super unprofessional to treat someone poorly because they didn't come to your establishment during a financially difficult period. We will not be coming back until Anne learns to treat customers with respect. read more

When moving to a new apartment you need three things within walking distance: a grocer, a liquor store, and a good bar. Simply put: Vaughan's is one of the best neighborhood bars on the NW side. Super friendly staff, good food, great atmosphere. I've come here for weekend lunches with kids and solo to watch the Cubs lose. In both cases it fits the bill. And unlike a lot of trendier "neighborhood bars" this one isn't overpriced. Important tip: Get the rewards card and fill out the online surveys whenever you can. read more

The food is actually good, the staff is great, solid food and drink specials, good number of TVs without looking ridiculous, there's a rooftop, some outside seating in front, and it's really the only decent Jefferson Park restaurant/pub which isn't pretentious. BTW, there are groups of Gaelic football players/fans who sometimes flood the place after their own games locally or to watch via their hometeam on PayPerView... which is sort of like being teleported into Ireland (very cool). The fish was a little more greasy than I prefer, but you can just remove the batter if you like. Had no problem just ordering more fish. All you can eat Fish Fry for 10 bucks is what brought us to Vaughn's. HUGE pieces of fish that came with fries and peas. Very delicious. We also ordered the mac & cheese which was unique and tasty. They used Merck's or something because it was great. The only reason we are giving them 4 instead of 5 stars is because of the length of time we were there. The place was very crowded, we sat right away, but waited for for an extensively long time once we ordered. I like Vaughn's. I can walk there from my house, which is good. They have food and drink specials every night of the week, my husband and I can eat and drink a few beers for around $30 bucks for both of us. It's rather cute inside and the staff is nice. For the complainers I ask "have you been to some of the other bars in this neighborhood? Old man bars with six inces of cigarette butts to walk through to get in the door, then you walk in and are greated by a handfull of old drunks whose butts have fused to the stools they have been sitting in for the past 20 years! There's about 5 bars i this area that I would actually go to and Vaughn's is one of them. It's not fancy, but cute, the service is good, the mini cheeseburgers are yummy, and it's reasonably priced. read more
