I've been bringing my pets to VCA Arbor Animal Clinic since moving to Austin over ten years ago, and I've consistently had positive experiences with the staff and doctors. The clinic offers a comfortable environment with over five different rooms and a decent space to hang out with your pet while you wait, making visits more pleasant. The veterinarians at VCA Arbor are always straightforward and provide alternative options for the care of my dogs, which I greatly appreciate. Especially with the rising cost of everything. Sadly, earlier this year, I faced the heartbreaking decision to put down my senior dog, Aries, due to various age-related issues. Dr. Sandy, along with the rest of the staff, was incredibly sympathetic and supportive during that difficult time. They were all very sweet and gentle with me, helping me navigate such a sad moment. I'm grateful for their kindness and compassion during such a hard time for me and my family. I'll truly never forget the compassion they showed me. On another note, over the years, I've noticed that the cost of services at VCA Arbor Animal Clinic has increased. For example, the price for teeth cleaning has risen significantly from $400 to over $1,000. While this can be attributed to the current economic situation, it can still be a bit of a shock. Thankfully, the clinic offers the Care Club, which has been a great way to manage costs. It provides a more affordable option that covers various services throughout the year, making it easier to budget and avoid large upfront expenses. Initially, I was skeptical and thought it was just a sales pitch, but it turned out to be well worth it. Overall, despite the rising costs, the quality of care and the compassionate staff at VCA Arbor Animal Clinic make it a reliable choice for pet owners. I highly recommend them for their professional and caring approach to veterinary care. I'll never go to a different vet and I'll always choose VCA Arbor. My dog has allergy symptom and previous vet I used doctoer was out so I tried this one. They picked up some newer drug called prednison instead of using traditional drug for allergy and we asked side effect and was told no side effect. Our dog start vomitting immediately after taking the drug and we searched and found the drug has side effect sometimes. VCA refused to return the drug and when we take dog for visit they tried to pursuade us to spend more money for extra treatment and special food from them. Our dog just stop taking this drug and switch to old one we use and she is good. We are charged for the second doctor visit and did not get refund for the drug. read more

We have moved away from this location but because our membership is only for this one we drive here without any hesitation. The staff from the front desk to the vets are top notch. We used Yelp to find this place and always so grateful for other members leaving honest reviews. The vets are so caring as well as the techs. They truly care for each pet and it shows. We will stay with the VCA group but will have to move to a different one in a few months closer to home. We highly recommend the VCA group!!! read more

Dr. Ortiz saw our cat on a Saturday for an emergency. Hans had the best treatment! My cat feels so much better! Arbor was so amazing to work my geriatric cat in for an appointment ... I was in tears that I thought he was so ill. The situation was nowhere near as bad as I thought, and I appreciate their compassionate and conservative treatment. read more

I recently put my dog down. The staff here was so amazing. The office felt more like a funeral home than a vet clinic. The doctor and techs were so sympathetic and caring. Their prices were financially more viable than other clinics I called around to. I will be returning to this clinic with my other dog in the future for sure! read more

Dr Sandy Curran was horrible, she had horrible bed side manners and zero professional raised her hand at me multiple times and her finger, I had to ask her to calm down she gave me multiple different answers to my questions and then was rude to me because she didn't know right from left with what her procedure with my cat would be, would never recommend her to anyone if she treats humans this way their is no telling how she would treat any animal. I would recommend Dr Elizabeth Wood though! She had a passion for animals and was genuinely so kind and professional! If you want your pet in good hands go with Elizabeth!! She will be sure to care for your pet along with all the knowledge to ease your mind! Moving to the other side of town means I needed to find a new vet for my cat. I had used VCA Tanglewood down in South Austin but I didn't want to trek all the way down there since my cat gets car sick. Plus she a reputation. I think the place silently rejoiced when I called to get a copy of her vet records for the new vet. When I called VCA Arbor I was able to schedule a curbside appointment the next day for my cat's annual exam and shave. Thanks 'Rona for the curbside and PPE. Anyway, the curbside process went smoothly as I was one of the first people to show up. They took a few additional pieces of information at curbside and I was on my way for the morning. I got a call from the vet around noon who was super nice and explained a few things that will need to be done in the near future. I was also able to get my cat a prescription for her anxiety for the future vet visit which was extremely helpful. I am hoping it helps so no more puke or poop in her carrier. read more

Dr Lucia is the best vet ever. I was so worried about my 10 year old Pomeranian getting a teeth cleaning (that he desperately needed) and she made me feel assured the whole way. My 6-month-old kitten needs to be neutered so this required a wellness exam as it was also the first time that they had seen us. They were the best clinic I had spoken to BY FAR. Simply put, they actually answered my questions without an attitude, unlike at other vet clinics. The exams alone are $91 which is pretty pricey compared to the at-home service from The Vets Austin (also great vets without leaving your home). I was given an estimate for the neuter for about $345 so let's see how true this is once we do go through the surgery. The reception staff and techs were really nice and sweet, although the tech seemed a bit nervous when approaching my kitten. I have seen Dr. Wood and Dr. Curran and both were great thus far! They both answered my questions and Dr. Curran reassured me about the process for the neuter. The one thing that I did notice on both visits is that the wait time was pretty long, more than 30 minutes to actually see the vet so if you are taking time off work, I would suggest taking up to 1 hour extra off work to accommodate any delays. We were fortunate that we were in the exam room for the majority of the wait period so my kitten was able to stay calm and not be around other animals but this is something that could be an issue for other fur babies. read more

We originally went to VCA Arbor Animal Hospital because it was close to our apartment and they offered a first visit free for adopting from APA. We're moving far further south now but we'll be sticking with VCA Arbor because we love them. Here are a few reasons why: 1. Great Care When we got Nugget, our dog, she had an eye infection, ear infection, and both types of mange. The poor thing was a mess! She had no fur and many scars on her face from the mange and was incessantly scratching. They prescribed a course of action (admittedly laborious but that's to be expected) and checked-in often. Even after those initial impressions, we've always gotten great care. 2. Interested in Pet Wellness I can tell that the staff there is actually interested in my dog's wellbeing. Yes, we have to pay for services but they definitely aren't penny-pinching. I remember that my dog got into some vitamins once and I was worried senseless, almost in tears. (She's my first dog so give me a break). I called an animal poison control hotline and they were going to charge me $60 just to ask my question. I would have paid it but my husband suggest I try the vet first. VCA Arbor asked me a few questions, did a littele bit of research, and called me back with their suggested course of action. It was simply "she's probably fine but bring her in if she shows X,Y,Z symptoms." (She was fine in the end.) 3. Helpful Staff We've done a ton of moving around, name changing, and just new-dog-owner mess-ups and VCA Arbor has been helpful each step of the way. They're very accommodating, which really does help us do our best for our dog. For example, we were traveling abroad for work so she was staying with my husband's family out in Nebraska. While there, we realized we had run out of her medication and needed a refill prescription. VCA Arbor could have said "she's a month overdue for her check-up" and not allowed us the refill, which happens. However, they knew that would delay her getting her medicine on time so they issued the refill and booked us a check-up appointment for when we're back in Austin. I've been to lots of vets and this was by far the best experience yet. Great covid protocols and Dr. Jacqueline Ortiz was amazing. Her and her assistant technician (sorry forgot her name) are a great duo. I brought in my maltipoo and King Charles spaniel for a check up and my dogs were shaking and they both took so much care and patience while taking a look at them. They were so comforting and understanding, you can tell they really love animals. They both took their time to go over any questions and concerns we had and I just can't tell you enough how amazing they are as vets and also as people! This is such a great vet! I have been taking my dogs here for almost 10 years. Not only are the doctors thorough but the front staff is extraordinarily friendly whether it's in person or on the phone. I never feel rushed or that I'm asking too many questions. They always keep me updated on everything I need to know about my dogs health, appointments, etc. They even sent me a picture today after my dog had her procedure and was sleeping off the anesthesia. VCA is, without a doubt, the best animal hospital that my kitty Linus and I have ever been to - in 11 years of going to the vet! Dr. Ortiz, Dr. Fuller and the rest of the Arbor Woods team have provided excellent care for Linus. They've been there for his routine checkups, kitty acne flare-ups, and UTI issues. Most recently, I texted VCA with photos of Linus's kitty acne and they called right back, helped me get medicated wipes for his chin and an antibiotic shot to heal up the sores. Appointments have always been on time and efficient without feeling rushed. Pricing is reasonable and transparent. Can't ask for much more than that from a vet's office. I might update this review later & subtract 2 more stars, depending on results we will get back from the lab, & future costs for something that could've & should've been addressed & treated during the several post operative follow ups we had to schedule. Let me just say that every time I get a call "... so what exactly are we looking at today?" 07/13 Spay & Gastropexy (for GDV) to return for suture removal 14 days post-op. 07/19 SUNDAY of course this VCA location is closed all weekend so I call the # on the post op care sheet I was given for their "after hours referral line", I was told they'd be aware of Gaea's procedure and that if she were to need emergency care beyond VCA operation they would be ready to care for her & had her paperwork already. We wait 2 1/2 hours before central tx vet hospital even comes out to take vitals yet tells me multiple times it is like a triage facility. Just can't compute how a triage can determine priority patients without initial vital checks!!! Dr tells us sutures need out NOW - 14 days would've been too long, the skin was basically rejecting them at this point. Sends us home with more sedatives & a corticosteroid cream. Beginning of August we follow up after the emergency visit - we are told it's healing normal - that the pus bubble forming is normal. (Which she initially didn't even see hence the what exactly are we looking at..) I was then told at some point a loop of internal sutures would eventually pop out from the skins surface & to bring her by to have them trim off. They instructed me not to use any type of corticosteroid cream on it or it would make it worse. Bubble gradually turns dark purple & appears as keloid for another month. September- I call I bring her in because it is swollen. I am sent with anti inflammatory meds. It's still normal. October around the 8th or something - I bring her in for alleged foot or leg injury. We do agility so when she stretches abdomen during functions she will yelp and flail around as if getting sharp pains. They again can't even see what I'm talking about meanwhile it's CV19 season so it's curbside and just trrrible all around honestly. Hard to describe certain areas when you must rotate the limb a certain way to see muscle insertions & origins where I was seeing swelling. We are again sent with anti inflammatory and told her anxiety is so high they don't think she's showing any signs of pain so they don't think it is anything serious. We go home. Literally a week later the whole incision starts hardening so I sharpied a circle to compare changes in size. Slipped my mind we had a very busy week & when I checked it on the 25th & wound up at the Veterinary Specialists Hospital. I can't tell you how shitty it feels to be treated like you're a hypochondriac for your dog when time after time the vet has overlooked significant things numerous times- on your wallet!! Might I add that I scheduled an ultrasonogram for the 10/08 appt as I stated twice on phone & had my list in front of me. I was scheduled showed up checked in dog taken back and I get the initial call they ask what we were doing today- I told them uhhh- ultrasound? She told me they don't even HAVE an ultrasound machine. Mind you- this was at 430pm on a FRIDAY. Gastropexy procedure mortality is detrimental to catch EARLY. Your chances of survival once the stomach twists, enters necrosis, or the animal experiences sepsis- are LESS THAN 30% per NCBI data. I'm including pictures of her incision to validate this whole tragedy. To be honest, I'm not sure if I will return for the HeartGuard we've been overdue for and trying to purchase but somehow also keeps getting overlooked / forgotten. We take 3 pets here and have spent over $3,000 in 2020 alone- and the year isn't even over. Our other dog went in for a heart worm test and 2 weeks later we receive another appt reminder about him being due for 1 year wellness exam. They could have caught that & saved us both time & money by putting these exams together. They've even sent us home with the wrong dosage instructions on a post op medication. I'm not usually one to split hairs, but by God if I haven't had it right up to my witts end just trying to make sure our animals are healthy & alive. Had I have known this facility has no medical capability to view the inside of the area of the surgery- I would have never gotten the surgery there. I love this vet's office - from office staff, to vet techs, to the vets - they are the best I've encountered in Austin. Appointments are on-time and if you have an emergency, they are easy to work with to get your pet in quickly. Big extra shout out to Kelly, a vet tech, who bonded with my skittish kitty better than I've ever seen. I feel my beloved Arbor Animal Clinic has been on the downhill since the VCA takeover. I've been going here for multiple pets for nearly 10 years, but my latest experience there has me weary. First, they tried charging me over $100 for a follow up that was supposed to be included in the initial vet visit and payment. They reduced my payment without question after I questioned it, but it makes me wonder how many other people are being inadvertently charged for check ups for no reason. Secondly, what good is a vet with a phone that doesn't work? My dog had a procedure yesterday and I missed a check up call this morning (it strangely came in as "No Caller ID", which I never pick up), and now as I attempt to call back, it's going straight to a disconnect. I have a couple important questions for the vet, yet no way to contact them. I even tried sending a message through their website, and I was redirected to a barebones error page with no confirmation that my message was sent. I'm now stuck in limbo, hoping that my 5th attempt at calling them later today will work. After all this mess, this will probably be my last time going to VCA and I'll be on the search for a better option. read more

I have nothing but good things to say! I brought my cat here for about 7 years - from a kitten until we recently moved out of Austin. During that time, management changed to VCA. Vaccine specials were discontinued which was disappointing but I never noticed a decline in service for our cat Shipley or dog Cheddar. It may be on the pricier side but the service and care we received was worth it for us. Everyone was always wonderful but I have to say the vet techs always stood out to me for being so caring and obviously love what they do. They always did their best to keep my cat Shipley calm and dote on him, despite his anxiousness every time (we are the ones always apologizing because he urinated in the cage on the way...yep so fun!). I do want to brag on my final experience with the clinic. Shipley was brought in for a routine teeth cleaning. Long story short, he unexpectedly needed several (11) teeth removed due to a diagnosis no one could have foreseen. It was so stressful, but we were updated right away and staff was thoughtful about preparing us for our options, cost, etc. We got text updates and pictures which put me at ease. We were told we would likely notice improvements in his behavior - I couldn't believe how much better he is eating, playing and totally not bothered by having a few less teeth! We let staff know we were moving and they immediately offered to send us their records by email. THANK YOU to the staff who were always so helpful and caring, especially towards Shipley who had his fair share of visits in the last several years. I found out about this place via yelp and ended up making an appt for a check-up for my newly adopted 1 yr old Lab Mix due to the great rating and reviews I saw. Im sorry, but I just didn't feel the same "wow" factor that I read in theses reviews. I had dogs as a child but this my first full ownership and responsibility for a dog, so I've never been to a vet before and had no idea what to expect so I feel that has a lot to do with my outlook and review here. I had the last appointment on a Monday, so maybe that why I felt the staff's energy was low. The staff wasn't negative or it's not like they were not helpful, but I just didn't feel any type of connection to this place. I just felt like a customer in the end, paying for services rendered. Not sure we will become "regulars" here, but I also wouldn't hesitate to come back if I had no other options. read more

I've been taking my dog to Arbor Animal Clinic for two years and I always leave feeling like I've been overcharged. A typical visit runs between $200-$400 dollars. I recently went in for a follow-up that i thought was free and was charged $70 for testing. I initially started seeing Dr. Butcher for allergy testing and treatments and she started me on the most expensive treatments first. When they didn't work, she offered a more cost effective option, which ended up being what my dog needed. It made me so uncomfortable that she went straight for the most expensive treatment that I stopped scheduling appointments with her. I called this morning to talk to Dr. Kennedy about a health concern I have for my dog. I was hoping to chat over the phone and explain the symptoms and get a little guidance as how to go forward. I left a message with my concerns with the receptionist and asked that she give me a call back. Much later in the afternoon I received a voicemail from the receptionist saying that if I think my dog is sick, then I should make an appointment. I hung up the phone feeling embarrassed, disappointed, and completely unheard. A 5 minute return call would have gone a long way to show that they care about establishing relationships with patients and not just about billing. I feel confident that they would have steered me towards the most expensive treatment options for what may be something really simple. I won't be talking my dog back to this clinic. read more

I took my cat, who had swallowed a ribbon, here after my longtime vet practice was unable to give us any assistance. The careful exam, conservative treatment, and reassuring prognosis from Dr. Ortiz were greatly appreciated, and the ribbon was eventually passed without incident as she predicted. Arbor is an amazing clinic. I have been to several vets in the Austin/Pflugerville area and was impressed by the skills of Dr Ortiz and Dr Woods. I will only take my pups here and trust their advice and expertise. One of my pups is incredibly high maintenance with insurmountable medical issues, and Dr Ortiz helped me discover the primary causes of her stomach issues, after adjusting her diet my girl is no longer sick every day! Also, unlike other vets they don't unnecessarily push expensive treatments or procedures, they come up with options that make the most sense for the health of the pet. If they do advise an expensive treatment, I know it's truly what's necessary for the health of my pet. They are rather far from my home, but it is absolutely worth the drive. I took a little dog that had nerve damage (wasn't mine but the people it belonged had no resources to help this little guy), among other symptoms he couldn't stand, most likely from eating a rat that had been poisoned. Over the past few years I have done countless, successful fund raisers for animals through my usual vet but on that day...they were way too overbooked to take him in, so they referred me here. I had already contacted several vets in Killeen, none would work with me on taking in donations, including one down the road from this clinic and they all took a rather uncaring position. But... not Arbor Animal Hospital!!! From the start they expressed a sincere desire help, while explaining the limitations to what the could do. Like the other vets, they couldn't take called in donations, unlike the other vets they kept referring to their desire to help and offered many suggestions for how to make it work with them or how to get help elsewhere. Because I was willing to contribute $50 for this little guy's care, I paid for the examination which confirmed nerve damage. The treatment however, could cost thousands. That was more than I felt like I could raise in my network... so I returned the little guy to his people with food and instructions and informed them of their options. The employees of this vet clinic demonstrated a true commitment and compassion for their animal patients, far above any veterinarian I have ever been to (except my vet)... if I ever can't get in to my vet I will go here!!! read more

It makes me so sad, but I feel I need to update my previous review. I have to agree with many of the new reviews, it is not the same as when we first started bringing our pets here. After Dr. Kautz left and opened his own office (Crestview Clinic), we have only been using Arbor for boarding services. Our last two experiences have just been terrible from the poor front desk customer service (specifically Riley) and then botching a simple $15 nail trim for a cat... we unfortunately will be looking elsewhere. The new Drs seem polite, but very impersonal, trying to give directions in the middle of a crowded waiting room, unable to answer any questions? Front desk Riley was rude with an attitude and unable to understand simple feeding instructions!? Our last few visits they have charged us for services our pets did not receive so make sure you read over your bill yourself!! Last month my boyfriend and I took our pet to get his annual rabies shot. The vet Jennifer Moon took literally one minute to "exam" our dog, and the examination fee turned out to be about 55 dollars. Moreover, our dog is only 10 pounds, and the vet suggested us to get all three vaccinations on the same day. I rejected her idea, and our dog still felt quite uncomfortable the 2nd day with only two vaccinations. During our visit there, all she tried to do is to sell us stuff (services and medications). She doesn't really concern about the well being of the pet, rather she only cares about pushing us to pay more at the clinic. The whole visit she spent less than 10 minutes with us, and the exam fee was over 150 dollars. I was extremely unsatisfied about what happened. We went back to the clinic and a nice front desk lady processed our refund for part of the services (thanks for her help). What is really ridiculous is I scheduled another appointment to get my dog the other vaccination he needed. Without telling us, they exam him again and charged another 40 dollars examination fee! We didn't argue with them, but we decided never to come back again. I don't know if the experience I had is an exception, but this place definitely does not deserve a 4.5 review. I suspect that most of the reviews are not real. I would never recommend anyone to visit this place. read more

Really bad experience, after years of great care. Appointment for annual checkup went terribly wrong. New policies in place?? New ownership it seems since there's a name change to the clinic. No longer allows owner to be with dog for check up, requires staff to hold him which was terrifying. Never saw the vet he knows "in surgery ". Never given the option to reschedule and felt like assembly line parade through without the caring touch. Even the new front desk people are corporate feeling read more

My 11 year old dog was diagnosis healthy in another pet hospital months ago, he has been active and no symptoms. We moved to this neighborhood and want to have dental clean for our dog, we are asked to pay for $153.55 for bloodtest (which is pretty standard) before dental clean, and beside dental clean cost, we are required to pay $144.40 more for x-ray if we want to get dental clean. Later blood test report came back, we are asked to pay $391.20 + $550 for more diagnosis of the kidney disease, if not, we can't proceed dental clean. I'm not sure it's the vet or the hospitals' way of doing things, but definitely a very bad experience for me. read more
