We bring both of our cats here and the experience has been very positive. The staff, techs, and vets are all really knowledgeable. I find the hospital to be knowledgeable and wonderful at engaging with pets and pet parents alike. I'm appalled by the lack of proper veterinary care and basic empathy exhibited by the vet Marlene Jan towards my mom and her elderly cat. Dr Jan was combative and made personal accusations towards my mom's ability to take care of an elderly, deaf, previously feral cat that she has kept alive and healthy for near twenty years. My mom went in with a simple concern about her cat's loud meowing- as we have long ago noticed she is deaf. She only wanted information about potential nighttime sedatives or relaxers as the cat is obviously healthy and not in pain, eating normally and purrs as soon as she is picked up and held. Dr Jan's response? Calling my mom an incompetent pet owner pressing her to euthanize. I think that's insane. I think it's terrible. She sent my mom home in tears and I'm enraged. This cat is a member of our family. We only sought something to help her sleep at night in her old age. I have never left a bad review in my life but I think if your immediate response is to euthanize a member of my family and insinuate my mother can not care for a cat she has kept healthy and happy for two decades, you should not be a veterinarian. I made this yelp account solely to warn other concerned pet parents about Dr Marlene Jan. You will receive no empathy or constructive solutions from her. I had to have a tiny foster puppy with a complicated birth defect diagnosed (and eventually euthanized) at this clinic. I can not say enough about Dr. Gaetz, she, and her staff were so wonderful. This all took place in the middle of Covid-19, and although this puppy's unfortunate circumstance brought me to this place, I now would not go anywhere else but to Dr Gaetz for my animals. I had a similar positive experience at Devotion Animal Hospital back in 2012, I don't remember the name of the female vet that helped me then- but she was also wonderful. I would give 6 stars if I could. That's all you reeeeeaaally need to know. But, if you want to know why, here's the scoop. You know how they say dogs look like their owners? Well, we have a lot more in common than our big heads and muscular builds. My 80lb rescued pit bull, Leroy and I are both young, outgoing, and healthy. Unfortunately, we are both very uncoordinated and totally prone to injury. Despite all this, we are active, we do everything together, we go to work together, we go on runs together (until I trip over him because we got distracted by a nearby sprinkler... I twist my ankle and stop running for a month) Honestly, until last weekend I truly believed we were invincible. Sometimes, you jump up to catch a toy and you land wrong and just break your leg in half. It happens...right? No! It doesn't just happen but of course it had to happen to my dog on a Saturday night. I rushed Leroy to the nearby emergency hospital where they had little regard for his back leg dangling from his body when dysfunctionally transporting him from the car to the hospital. Did I mention his leg is broken? They gave me an estimate of somewhere between $5k-$8k for surgery before a horrified dog mom decided to wait until Monday morning to hopefully get a second opinion and find an amazing orthopedic surgeon (at non emergency vet hospital prices) to put Leroy's tibia/fibula back together. A friend of the family caught wind of Leroy's incident and messaged me on Facebook explaining how she has taken her entire pack of dogs to Dr Barros for years. He had performed several orthopedic surgeries for her pups, and she drives from Pacifica to Santa Rosa (70mi) even for routine appointments because he is simply the best there is. Here I am, Monday morning and I am racing against traffic from Oakland to get Leroy into Devotion animal hospital. I probably called and talked to Sally about 20 times regarding every single thought that was racing through my head on the way there. Should I bring his food? Am I picking him up today? Is it ok that he won't pee? Should I give him pain meds this morning? Can someone help me get him out of my car? Is it ok if I'm 5 minutes late? Should he be hyperventilating? Why do his ears feel cold? Poor Sally. Thank you for being so patient and helpful. Leroy hobbled his way into the hospital and into an exam room. Dr Barros gave me the low down on the procedure, the estimated recovery time, and what to expect. I was very impressed with the level of care we received from Dr Barros, the vet techs and staff at the hospital. 24 hours later Leroy WALKED out of that hospital and into the car. A cone, 27 staples, and a plate to mend his fractured tibia/fibula. Amazing customer service, they were able to accommodate us that same day for major orthopedic surgery. I am just floored by how great the procedure went and how such a stressful, traumatic situation became the start of the road to Leroy's recovery. I can't wait until our follow up appointment next week so that I can personally thank Dr Barros myself...he really the saved the day! If not Leroy's life. You get twice the TLC for less than half the cost. I will never go anywhere else. read more

I never had to complain about an employee until maybe the last 6 months. Kelly had worked on my pet before and sometimes oversee's check ups. There have been a few times when in close proximity of the exam rooms that she smells faintly like alcohol in the afternoon. There was one time she had the lingering odor of marijuana first thing in the morning. Which makes sense as I have seen her leaving a local dispensary. Since my concerns had me voiced her demeanor towards customers have changed. She does not approach, when she has to converse she is short and almost angry. She is kept away from people as if she is trying to be hidden to make this concern seem addressed and to go away. If she's causing animals to get sick or die this could be a huge liability. I am deeply concerned about the lack of accountability by Devotation now as to the fact that I have reported my concerns to the owners. As well as her own yelp page as it clearly indicates that she is a lush and a lot of the places reviewed can be gone to on her lunch and near by. This is not acceptable for someone in the medical field to smell of any drugs/ alcohol while attempting to practice Medicine. You wouldn't let your child be seen by a doctor who was under the influence- Why should our pets? Find a vet that has a ZERO tolerance policy and strictly enforces it. If your animal has been sicker after visiting or died I would be exercising my right to know who cared for my animal. I have also contacted the veterinary board to have them look into the facility and licenses. They too agreed that this is not in good practice. read more

I kept going back to this place after multiple bad experiences because my dogs really liked going. I finally left after paying over $5000 to a have what I was told was a 'spindle cell tumor' removed from my dogs rear ankle. The Vet was very sure about the diagnosis & wanted to act as fast as possible to keep it from spreading & hopefully avoid chemo and radiation so I asked her to please do what she could to save him. It was a painful surgery (they over medicated him, I'd never seen him so miserable!! He was struggling to breathe and just wailing and crying for hours afterwards) and a long recovery. After refusing to see him weeks later when he had some more complications because they were too busy, I went to another Vet who told me after looking at his records that it had been a non-cancerous growth. As a single mother who really couldn't afford the surgery but love my dogs so much I am sick to have learned I was taken advantage of in this way. I desperately wish I would have waited for the biopsy to come back and gotten a second opinion. I'll give it to them though, Devotion really knows how to play your heart strings! I took my other dog here to have a foxtail removed from his paw (I saw the end of the foxtail go in but I couldn't get it with tweezers) but the vet couldn't find it after ripping up his poor paw (after which he was on meds & out of commission for weeks) She was sure it wasn't in there. A month later the foxtail came out higher on his leg and I pulled it out with tweezers. I told the vet about this at our next appointment and she just shrugged. read more

They are only devoted to their bottom line not your animals well being. I did not feel this way a year ago but recent events have made me feel that way based off their actions. They don't follow up and they said they do, but have no proof of email or text and didn't leave a voicemail. I don't have a voice mail set up, so the staff member (Kelly) just lied to me when she said she left me a voice mail. All I could do was laugh at this point, I have not had it set up for a year. Dr. Dennis Barrios DVM and his staff are so proffessional and caring I recomend them to anyone needing vetinary care for their pets. We have a very sweet geriatric doggie who has seen Dr. Barrios a few times and had surgery to remove many rotten teeth last year and a small surgery for anal sac problems. Today our sweetie had some very bad sneezing fits and I called up, imediately the tech on the phone said bring her in she might have a foxtail and it needs to be taken out if so. 45 min later our doggie is being seen by the vet, he notices that she has a heart murmor that she did not have last year. Ran some Xrays and lets us know that she has 2 other serious problems besides the foxtail. He was so careful to explain everthing...give us a estimate and said he would remove the foxtail right away and our doggie would be ready to go home in a few hours. I loved this place when Dr Barros was there. The staff at the desk are great. I just really don't like the new doctor. She has a hard time working with my dog who has never had an issue with anyone. She now has prescribed him sedatives so he will be easier to work on. She's very pushy on the phone. In speaking with other people, two people I work with have also left after having bad experiences with her. I am not comfortable having my dog go into appointments with her when I cannot go with him. After having bad luck with veterinarians in Sonoma County since moving here, I ended up finding Dr. Barros almost by accident. A friend recommended the vet who used to operate in Devotion's location. I called, and was told that he had retired but Dr. Barros now owned the business. Once I found out that some of the staff from the original vet stayed on, I figured I'd give them a try. Dr. Barros is very friendly and clearly loves animals. I know that should go without saying when you're talking about vets but, trust me, I've been to at least two in SoCo who didn't seem to care about animals very much at all. My dog Vinnie has had a few different procedures there and they've all gone very well. Last year, after getting a cyst removed, someone from Dr. Barros' office called twice to see how Vinnie was recovering- which I thought was very sweet and thorough. Price-wise, Dr. Barros is not the cheapest, but I would say his prices are reasonable- especially considering the level of service and how good he seems to be at what he does. The staff is also very friendly and knowledgeable and the office and exam rooms are very CLEAN! Again, something you would assume would be the case, but it clearly is not as I've seen a couple vets' offices locally that have dirt and hair gathered in the corners and other troubling signs of poor hygiene. I'm not very generous with my five-star reviews but in this case, it is more than deserved. I trust him with our only pet- which says a lot. read more

My 7 year old lab tore her ACL in Dec. 2017. She had been limping for a bit of time, and it started to get worse. I had no idea what it was, so I called Devotion. Same day appointment near the holidays, and Dr. Barros did the physical and a very quick x-ray to confirm. He explained the surgery (TPLO) very clearly and concisely, showed me x-rays and what the surgery would look like, and had her scheduled the very next day. Also showed hip dysplasia x-rays and recommendations for future surgery. TPLO Surgery went well, and follow up appointments showed no issues with the surgery. Post-op was difficult, but she made a full recovery. A year later, she hurt herself on the opposite leg. I brought her in, and a quick x-ray and his outdoor gait exam of her proved just a muscle injury most likely. He is the only vet I will bring her too and is an absolute pleasure to work with. Staff is also extremely friendly. I have been to great vets in Santa Rosa, but Dr. Barros is by far the best. read more

I still love this wonderful vet- We have lost a cat and dog since this was last posted and the whole office could not have been more wonderful- they have seen our pets through seizures, cancer and diabetes. I was even able to bring in one of my chickens when she had a bad growth. VCA Devotion animal hospital made us feel so welcomed and did a fabulous job easing our dog in as he met them for the first time.. After our outstanding visit they were even sweet enough to call a few days later and send a letter in the mail to check on our dog and thank us for choosing them. When our vet was unavailable, VCA Devotion was there for us. We will be switching over to them and making them our primary care provider for our pup. Our cat Precious (15-18 YO rescue, ours for the last 12 years) has been suffering from renal failure from her advanced age. Dr. Barros, the original owner of Devotion Animal hospital (we had been very happy clients of his for 14 years), had installed a sub-cutaneous port several years ago to allow us to inject her with ringers lactate weekly to help flush her kidneys and keep her going for a couple more years. He had also proscribed Meloxicam oral suspension (Metacam) to help alleviate arthritis pain that she also has. It has been very helpful in alleviating that pain for several years. Dr. Barros retired this year, and the new vet, Dr Goethe, refuses to give us Metacam for her, because it can help cause kidney failure. What the Vet is refusing to recognize is that we are giving her palliative care, trying to help her be comfortable while she reaches end-of-life. Right now she is limping around the house and not eating because she is in so much pain. What Dr. Goethe has prescribed instead of the arthritis medicine is a sedative. We gave it to her, she kept limping around, sleeping more, and not eating. We also had Dr. Goethe re-suture the port Dr. Barros had installed because the cat had scratched several of the sutures loose. She did that, but did not stabilize the tube that goes from the port underneath the cats skin to allow the Ringers Lactate to be delivered to the right place near her lower back. Precious has scratched at this tube, and at least 1 1/2 inches is now pulled out from under her skin. If she manages to pull this tube out all the way, Precious will die soon, since we will be unable to help flush her kidneys. We try and cover this area, but she can be very persistent at the scratching. We are very unhappy, and are searching for another vet. We recommend caution in using VCA Devotion Animal Hospital under the new owners. Gene Zierdt read more

These people are responsible (in my eyes) for my old dog's death back in 2014. He had mistakenly found some bones and eaten them and they got stuck and were not able to pass through. All they did was give him an enema. The bones were still there. They did not try to help us with even offering surgery to remove the bones. We received our dog back with feces all over his backside, they did not even bother to clean him up. He passed away a couple days later. They were completely unprofessional, no sympathy and all they wanted/cared about was the large amount of money they charged us. I would NEVER recommend this place to ANYONE. Beware. read more

We have been going to DAH for several years, since it was recommended by another Labrador Mam and I am so glad! The kind staff have seen us the health and through the loss of two of our beloved dogs. I trust the doctors to be patient, honest, and fair with their examinations and procedures. The staff is super friendly and even allowed me to borrow a sling when my poor dog was having difficulty walking toward the end of his life. I feel like my animals are cared for here and I never ever feel overcharged which is something I find so frustrating with a lot of veterinarians in Sonoma County. They definitely trust owners to know what is right for their pets and do not push unnecessary vaccinations and medications to run up your costs. Thank you Devotion for everything. I love Devotion Animal Hospital. One of my cats has an autoimmune disorder and has to have very frequent vet appointments, so it is crucial that my vet is someone I trust and like. Dr. Barros has been seeing my cats for years now (including taking care of my 7 week old kitten that needed IV fluids and an overnight stay) and I can safely say he's the best vet I've ever gone to. Don't go here, it was great when Dr. Barros was there but now they are mainly focused on padding the bill and charging high prices. The place is dirty, there's grime caked in the corners of the linoleum flooring that needed to be changed 10 years ago. There is a sliding glass door in the hallway that hasn't been cleaned in what looks like years, and the exam rooms have no air circulation. You have to make a kind of pre-appointment before the actual appointment. I made an appt to have my cats' teeth cleaned and learned when i got there that no, the first appt is for the vet to look at the cats' teeth, then i would have to bring him back again for an actual appt when the service would take place. I try to limit the amount of times my cat is placed in stressful situations so having to bring him in twice for a teeth cleaning seems medically unnecessary and obviously a way to pad the bill. Even the prescription medicine is given in way-too-large quantities, adding to the expense. When I asked if the staff was vaccinated against covid, I was informed that they are not obligated to tell me, and they are not legally obligated, but from how dirty the whole place is I'm guessing they are not big on protection against germs and viruses on the whole. read more

I found Devotion Animal Hospital by accident and boy what a blessing it was! I have a 12 year old Jack Russell who need dental work done. Dr. Anderson is the new doctor and she treated my dog Popeye. She was wonderful! Very patient and informative. I had to take Popeye back because of some complications, which was no fault of theirs, and they got me right in without any questions asked.This time I worked with Dr. Barros. What a cool guy! Very down to earth and very knowledgable about animals. To make a long story short, Devotional Animal Hospital is amazing and I will continue bringing my animals to them for as long as I own animals...forever! read more

I brought my dod in for an exam and blood work on a Wednesday . They said she needed a biopsy on her liver. So Friday they do the biopsy she died on Saturday. They never called me until the next Wednesday to tell me the results. They still charged me the 1400.00 and never apologized not calling me. They have dealt with putting my cat to sleep and were extremely compassionate. My dog had a difficult condition to control but they hung in there until they found the right meds. He was very compassionate and up front when we had to put Chester down. Something I always totally respected. We went in thinking she was a gonner because of her injuries, but $800 and two weeks later, we were without our pet, further in debt, and it wasn't worth it. I've been taking my dogs to Devotion every since Dr. Barros took over the practice. I have always been glad that I stayed after the previous vet retired. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Barros and his staff. I am especially grateful for the care they gave our older GSD, just recently. She had a massive tumor, and after explaining the options we had decided to go ahead with surgery. Thankfully it was successful! What I appreciated the most is the fact that there was no pressure of " let's do everything we can." I said that I didn't want my dog to suffer, and Dr. Barros completely respected my request. We were so happy with this veterinarian. Our little chihuahua needed a procedure that not all vets do. We live 3 hours away but a family member recommend this vet so our vet faxed paperwork and we were able to schedule the surgery within two days. The staff was wonderful and the vet talked to us like she was a friend. Now our little chihuahua is recovering nicely back at home. This was a seamless event given the professional and friendly communication and process facilitated by the staff there. Hopefully we won't need any addition "specialty" procedures but if we do we will head back here. read more

Dr Barros and his fantastic staff - from the front to the back door - are fantastic. Best VET I have ever been to and I've had a lot of animals. Once, he determined what was wrong with my dog in less than 30 min and she had been to 2 ER clinics over the weekend and neither one of them had a clue (he had to do emergency surgery). It's the only office that my dog couldn't wait to enter - it was THAT good. Reasonable pricing and exceptional service. I would still be going there if my elderly dog didn't get sick going over the mtn. Some day I'll be back - even if I have to drive an hour or more! read more

I had the female vet today. I am extremely disappointed in the service from her. She didn't do a full exam, didn't listen to my dog's heart, didn't check the teeth, etc. I had to pay for a visit when she didn't even do anything! I definitely won't be back to this vet. read more
