it was my first time, taking my pet in for a physical/wellness visit... I had more anticipation about taking him to the doctor than I do about myself... they were very nice from the very beginning, clearly informative and professional, and answered any and all of my questions, even through my hyper feelings about being at the doctor and not knowing much about my pets needs.. There was a vet tech there named Brendan I believe who did the blood test and other tests necessary along with a treatment... he was calm and friendly, and assured me that everything went great.. Consistent with the reviews I read this is a great vet service.. I would highly recommend this veterinarian hospital to anybody.. thanks for all your help read more

Run, don't walk away with your fur baby. They basically performed the most expensive exam and failed to perform a basic blood test that would have helped in identifying what was wrong with our pup. Had to take our pup to Tufts, was told they'd send the test results - guess what they never sent them. $1k and hours of lost time, only to go to Tufts for our pup to be admitted. First off, the office staff, techs and vets are great. No complaints there. Our dog has always been treated well and the medical care is very good. The thing we can't get past is the pricing, which is high. It' snot JUST that the pricing is high; (we understand that as the industry grows and develops that costs usually rise concomitant with standards of care,) but the last three times I took my dog there, they sent a tech in with a tablet to up-sell extra lab work, treatment plans and the like. This is really an issue with the parent company and the 7.7 billion dollar purchase price. This is a chain of animal hospitals 800 hospitals strong, over 60 labs. You ARE a number, and subject to the whims of greasy sales practices baked up in the corporate offices of Mars, Inc. Yes, you read that right: they are owned by a megacorporation that started out making candy. I'd rather take my animals to a clinic owned by and operated by the vets themselves, thank you. At least when THEY offer additional services or lab work, it's because there is a clinical reason and not just some extra revenue involved. To wit: a week after my dog was seen for lab work for kidney/liver function and an exam to continue his current medications, I get a reminder in the mail and by e-mail that he is due for his kidney/liver function lab work. It was JUST done and the results were already obtained and interpreted. That to me, is a red flag. One hand is not talking to the other here. They're already pushing techs to up-sell additional services, the base price of the services has gone up recently and is higher than most in the area, and here they are trying to "remind" me that my dog is due for the same tests we just paid for. We're taking our dog elsewhere, and it's not the staff or vets that we take issue with -it's the greasy corporate shit that we hate. We aren't there to help some office administrators and senior managers show off slightly better numbers to corporate at the quarterly meetings; we're there for medical care and treatment. There is a disconnect between the standard of care and their billing/sales practices that cannot be ignored, and for that reason, we are out. EDIT: See the following comment by their community manager stating they do NOT up-sell. That's false. They told me my dog needed to have a kidney/liver panel and a basic set of labs, but then they tried to sell me two more advanced, (and more expensive,) options before I balked and they offered the basic panel I was told was necessary. Even then... the cost was around $275! I say, if you're in a pinch, their hours are good and the vets/staff are competent. If you have time to shop around, find a clinic that is vet-owned and avoid the marketing pitches. read more

My husband and I went here the day before we had to drive out to California, the morning prior our Australian shepard had a fecal with roundworms! They were so amazing and understanding about us leaving the next day, they even called me on the road about her fecal results, gave us tips on being on the road with her and if she was feeling ill. On June 13th, brought my 3 month old kitten Chloe in for a checkup. Long story short, After her exam, it was determined that she had FIP, and it would be best to euthanize her. We were stunned, but had to make a decision on what to do. Dr. Faeth and Ashley showed so much compassion for us and our dilemma. Answered all of our questions, and gave us as much time as we needed to make a decision, and to say goodbye to our baby. Not all veterinary practices are equal and the one I used before finding the VCA Lancaster Hospital left much to be desired. My dog had a serious eye condition, that came upon suddenly, and he couldn't eat and looked terrible. I called the previous office and they said they would see him the following week, no exceptions, and were not at all moved by his distress. That's when we called a friend and she suggested VCA and I called and was told to immediately bring him in. It turned out to be a serious issue with a tooth, that affected his eye, and they operated within 24 hours and couldn't have been more professional or concerned. I never looked back after that incident and since then have been going to VCA. Each visit I'm more impressed and grateful by their caring, organization, expertise and flexibility. The doctors and entire staff are wonderful and I highly recommend them to anyone interested in quality care for their treasured pets. Thank you!!! read more

Took my dog here in the fall of '20, because she was coughing and panting. Asked them to check her heart, I have the records, they said her heart was fine. Just went to another vet, not a chain, but a personal vet, to find out SHE HAS AN ENLARGED HEART, A MURMUR (3) and perhaps collapsing trachea. Which were causing her problems. Basically she is in congestive heart failure, and the veT said SHE IS NOT AT THE BEGINNING. VCA Lancaster MISDIAGNOSED my dog, and I am mad as hell! Avoid this place if you love your pet. read more

DON'T bring your pet here if you are looking for a vet for your new pet! No matter how long or how many pets you have been bringing there, they don't have enough vets to be available for you if you ever have a concern with your pet and want them to take a look. They are booked months out with limited Dr's and will just recommend that you take your pet to an emergency care location whenever you call with a concern. This has happened to me numerous times over the years, this is not a one time issue. My dog does not have an emergency, but she has something on her leg that she keeps licking and making bigger and a new growth on her snout so I'm concerned she's uncomfortable with whatever this is and I tried to get her an appointment to have it looked at by her vet that she's had for the last 7+ years. NOPE. Booked out for months! I was informed by the rude receptionist on the phone that their strict policy is that you have to just try to call each day and see if they have an opening. Won't book in advance, you need to play the "same-day appt" roulette of trying to get your vet to see your pet. This policy sends a very clear signal that their priority and cash-cow is in annual exams and shots and not sick pet exams. Go somewhere else if you are looking for care when your pet is sick, not just when they need their expensive shots. We are getting our dog out of there and going somewhere that they are committed to their animal patients, not the parents pocketbook. read more

We brought our girl Ginger in to VCA after she was diagnosed with cancer and battling a tough decision on what to do. We decided to end her suffering and brought her to VCA in Lancaster. I would imagine that the staff would know what you were there for when you give your name, but I guess not. We were brought into a room and went over what was going to happen... My sweet girl was laying on the floor with her head in my lap and they gave her the shot. She was calm and went peacefully. About 2 minutes after the shot, the receptionist came in and asked how we were going to pay. Now mind you - my girls head is still on my lap. I'm crying like a baby, my husband is crying... We tell her to leave us alone and we will come out when we were ready. After figuring out what to do we left.... Months and months go by and I keep getting emails from the hospital about updating Gingers page and shots and things that she needs. Do they not know that they put my sweet girl to sleep??? Every month, I respond and ask them to take me off their list. It kills me to see emails about her! I even got a Christmas card for her. Not very compassionate if you ask me. read more

Before I get into the substance of what prompted me to write this review, I would like to say this about the vet techs and vets: they have been amazing in caring for my two dogs. I can only speak in superlatives about the quality of care and the welcome that they've received. The issue I have is the at times abysmally deficient communication to which we've been subjected. The first round occurred in early January and was documented by Laurie H. on 1/11/2020. The Hospital Manager, Bree Walsh, apologized profusely and assured me the failure to provide information would never happen again. I guess now is never. Our dog's biopsies were inconclusive - and we completely understand that medical tests sometimes are inconclusive. However, our dog has been in slowly increasing discomfort and was put on medication for this. The medication had been effective and her quality of life remained quite high. Recently, however, the medication hasn't been quite as effective, so I called VCA Lancaster on Wednesday (3/11) to get information about pain management. I spoke with the person who answered the phone and explained that my dog was in pain and that I needed specific questions answered. She took down my questions and said she'd give them to one of the vets for a response. I did some online research and came up with a stop-gap plan, as I couldn't let my dog suffer in the interim. By Monday (3/16) I still hadn't heard back so I called. I spoke with the same person who expressed surprise that I hadn't heard back from VCA Lancaster. She had me speak with a supervising vet tech who told me that the person who answered my call had in fact forgotten to give the message to a vet. Let me repeat that: SHE HAD FORGOTTEN TO GIVE MY MESSAGE ABOUT MY DOG BEING IN PAIN TO A VET. In addition, the Hospital Manager was out, so I couldn't speak with her about this. In fact, the only person I could speak to was the supervising vet tech. I called back today, Wednesday (3/18) and the Hospital Manager is still out and it's uncertain when she will return. In her absence there is no acting Hospital Manager. I asked to speak with the Medical Director but was told that she is at VCA Lancaster only on Saturdays, but not every Saturday. So it seems that VCA Lancaster is set up so that it's impossible to communicate a concern about how bad the communication at VCA Lancaster can be. Irony abounds. In short, our dogs get great care when they are present, but if they are not present ... well, not so much. read more

This is a follow up to a review I gave back in November on google. At that time, I was focused on the fact that I was able to call 9:00AM on a Sunday and got a 11:00AM appointment, and the way Dr Morawski was able to tailor a treatment plan to fit my budget. It wasn't till a few months later that I realized that I was amiss in not also mentioning that Dr Faeth has been caring for my dog Roger for a few years now in the same way. Roger is an elderly dog with a few issues over that past couple years. Dr Faeth has been great in coming up with a treatment plan to keep Roger comfortable in his golden years and working within my budget. And never making me feel guilty if I can't afford all the treatment option available. And of course, all the Vet Techs have been very attentive to all Roger's needs as he's been a regular as of late, so much in fact he's usually greeted by name as soon as he walks in the door. And on last nights visit the Vet Techs gave him extra special care above what was I was even charged for. I would recommend the entire staff for anyone who needs somewhere to take their pet. read more

We were very happy with our recent visit to VCA Lancaster Animal Hospital for our puppy's first checkup! The staff was genuinely warm and friendly, giving our puppy doggy treats while we waited. The technician and doctor both were very helpful, answering our questions and providing additional information to help us during the puppy stage. They handled our puppy very gently, making every effort to keep her at ease as they examined her. We even got her micro-chipped that same day. I brought my guinea pig Miles to see Dr. Handy on 5/5/18 because he had stopped eating and I feared the worst. I live in Worcester and couldn't find anyone who could see me in an emergency aside from Tufts. I was able to get an appointment and she saved him! Her and the staff were wonderful to us. I left with a treatment plan and I'm happy to share he's doing better. I'm traveling extra just to visit this location because I felt like they really cared about the well-being of my beloved guinea pig. read more

The vets are great. They are kind of expensive, but not extremely. The reason for the 3 star rating is that the staff/assistants are as rude as can be. They are the reason we are switching vets. Dr Handy would be well advised finding staff that's more professional and friendly or she'll be losing more customers. read more

I cannot say enough nice things about this location. We love Dr. Gramlich and she has been so good to all of our animals. We had to put our dog down last year and my then 17 year old daughter wanted to stay in the room. Dr. Gramlich was professional but also compassionate. She even shed a tear with us while we were grieving. We recently moved and they asked if I wanted to go to another location closer to our home and there was no way I was going to change locations. My youngest dog has a small heart murmur and Dr. Gramlich is great about monitoring it and giving useful information for the future. My older dog is going to be 13 and they have been great about what meds to use to keep him comfortable in his senior years. I love this vca and am so glad I made the switch to them a couple of years ago. We also just took in an injured hamster who was seen by the male vet there( I forget his last name) and he was great with her. read more

Sadly I have been taking my dogs to this practice for 8 years. I also volunteer for a local shelter and recommended them to them. I foster besides having my own. I have always liked VCA Lancaster and have always spoken of them with high regards. Lately their prices seem to have sky rocketed and even the shelter had to switch because they couldn't afford it anymore. Today my 16 year old Pappillion was having a very difficult time which happens periodically but today it seemed worse so I made that difficult decision to take him in and have him euthanized. I explained on the phone that I was shorton money this week only having $54. In the bank to get me through the week. They said we totally understand and could accept payments due to the situation. I traveled all the way from Winchendon to Lancaster and sat waiting while holding my poor old man. The tech camein and explained that the cost would be $145.! Which was shocking enough but then she told me she understood I was in need of paying when I received my next paycheck, but they needed me to apply for a credit card first. I told them I didn't want a credit card. I don't like credit cards. And she once again told me I had to do this first. I said so you're forcing me to get a credit card? She said no we just need you to apply for one first. I left there with my dog and took him to one of my former Veterinarians who graciously helped me and understood. Sadly VCA has become just another money hungry vet practice that only cares about the money not the pets or their owners. I also feel I need to mention that in the 8 years of bringing my dogs there I never asked for a financial favor, and the main reason I started going was because I had one of those "free" first puppy exams because I adopted from a local shelter. So think about that.....first time puppy visit free.......euthanasia $145. for 16 year old dog! Go for your free visit but beware of continuing care. read more

I started going to Lancaster Vca because my best friend works there. I just got a German Shepard puppy named Jethro a few months ago and just like most puppies he's a handful. I just have to compliment the staff who are always ready and willing to take on anything my little man throws at them. This was our second non-scheduled visit and goodness am I grateful for them! They treat my little guy as if he were their own and always do it with a smile! What's huge to me is that they break everything down for me so I understand exactly what they're doing and why they're doing it so I don't leave there confused on how to handle the situation at hand. I know when I go in they're doing all they can to make Jethro feel better than when he arrived. Great first time experience for myself and the new kitteh. Appt was a bit challenging as the receptionist asked me three times for my name and purpose of the appt. When I arrived, I could not have wished for a better experience of prompt, considerate care of a scared feline. Took my dog there for ear infection. Was asked if i wanted to have the bacteria tested in my dogs ear. I said because i dont see alot of brown stuff in his ear i want the doctor to look in his ears first before determining if i wanna run the test. So she swiped my dogs ears and left the room and then came back in the room with the doctor. So the doctor looks in my dogs ears and said they don't look bad that she'd recommend a medicated ear cleaning so i said GREAT. I said then i wouldn't need that test done. The girl says I ALREADY DID IT i said "i told you i wanted the doctor to look in his ears first. So the doctor comes back in the room with someone else and basically says we cannot take that test off the bill. BEWARE OF THIS because obviously me saying it once wasnt enough in regards to not doing that test b4 the doctor looks in my dogs ears. I wouldn't of did that test because the doctor said that they didnt look bad and she just recommended a medicated ear cleaner. read more

I have been long overdue writing this review. We had just moved to the area back in September of last year when my cat experienced digestive distress. He had experienced the same issue a couple times previously, both of which required an emergency visit to clear up. I called the VCA Hospital on a Saturday morning to see if they could see my cat who was in a great deal of distress; not only they were able to fit us in and solve the problem, but Dr. Handy tool the time to explain what I could do to help prevent future issues. Super helpful staff (including Amy Chickering the vet tech) and I could not have been more happy to have found my new vet!! read more

I am a first time dog owner and was very nervous in choosing a good vet. This location was mentioned to me with great reviews and so I went for it. Making my appointment over the phone was a breeze and it took less than 5 minutes. Upon arriving they were very friendly and the office is nice and clean, and had big windows that let the sunlight in help make the place welcoming for animals. As a first time owner, I really appreciate the extra time they took to explain all the basics and terminology with me. They also gave great care to my new-to-me chihuahua and he left their office happy. The finances were explained very thoroughly and there was no pressure to do anything I wasn't comfortable with. Highly recommend this location and staff for any pet needs, and will continue bringing my chihuahua. read more

I adopted a cat last week from Dakin Humane Society in Springfield. With my cats adoption I received a certificate for a free vet exam if used within 2 weeks of the adoption date. VCA Lancaster Animal Hospital was just under 40 minutes from me which was the closest on the list of vets I had to choose from. Having not had a previous vet preference having the list was helpful. I was going to get a vet visit anyway for my peace of mind sooo to get a free one was a nice surprise. I expected a "catch" or to be pressured into additional services or products but it was not like that at all. They were sooo sweet with Harley and she barely even moved during her nail trim (not included with the free certificate which I was fine with paying for as I requested it). I feel that VCA besides being close to where we live offers a full range of services so I will not need to ever bring Harley anywhere else for care. I had my kids with me during the exam which was poor planning on my part but they were still friendly and helpful as I clearly had my hands full. The generous welcome to the practice gift we received was awesome. Overall I would give them 10 stars if I could and I am excited to work with them to keep my cat happy & healthy. read more

Very disappointed in response to my inquiry. My dog had 5 biopsies on Tuesday. I was told 2 days to get the test results. I hadn't heard from them on Thursday or Friday. I called them Saturday a.m. and left a call back number with the receptionist. I was told a doctor would call me back. After not hearing from them all day, I called back at 3 p.m. I was told a vet tech would speak to me in a moment. After waiting a minute or two, the receptionist told me a doctor would have to call me back. Considering I'm worried sick about a Cancer diagnosis, waiting on pins and needles is an understatement. I called them back around 4:20 p.m. knowing they close around 5 on Saturdays. I got a taped message saying they were closed for the day and to call back tomorrow. I'm irate to say the least. My doctor couldn't take 3 minutes to tell me whether my dog was about to die or not? Unacceptable! read more

Lancaster VCA is wonderful - The whole entire staff is caring, patient and I always feel they take my concerns as a pet owner as if it was their pet. It is comforting to know whether it is a routine appointment or an emergency (and we have had several) that they get us right in to be seen as well as the comfort to have them so close to home. So, took my cat here for the last two weeks. Was told over and over again she was alright and far from being sick. Going to my fiancé and recommending she spend more and more money knowing they could get it out of her and not me. Received no paperwork on the cat, I mean NOTHING, just bill after bill after bill. Once again, let me remind you, MULTIPLE professionals said all of her tests came back normal and that nothing was out of the ordinary, gave her meds, sent us on our way. $1600 later I put an end to it when they suggested a $700 scan for the "healthy cat"? If I knew now my cat would endure a ripping, puking, writhing death in my arms this morning on my couch I would have saved the money to begin with, never mind the images burned into my mind from going through this. Do not read this as a distraught pet owner but someone who was blatantly LIED to for PROFIT. Take your animals elsewhere if you value and cherish them. Sick to my stomach that these people couldn't just say "yes your cat is moving on" but instead tried to filter as much money out of the situation as possible via my fiancé...... For the past decade we've been bringing our dog and cat to vet in another town. It was always a stressful experience for both but I thought that was normal. Then last summer we got a new puppy from a local shelter and it came with a free visit to the VCA Lancaster Animal Hospital so we thought we'd try that out. We were so very impressed with the amazing stress free atmosphere, the kindness, knowledge and amazing care that our puppy received we decided to switch all of our animals to them. Just brought my 12 year old lab mix to her first annual appointment with them and she was so relaxed that she actually slept in the lobby, there was no drooling and anxiety that usually accompanies her visits to the vets office. The follow up check up phone call was appreciated as well as the follow up care since. They are awesome! The only thing is that because they are so attentive to each of their furry clients, they sometimes get backed up with the schedule so go for morning appointments if you are in a hurry. Having said that, they are worth the wait, less expensive than other local vets, and have a holistic approach with an animal acupuncturist on staff too! They rock! read more

I have been going to VCA Lancaster for well over 10 years. I have 3 dogs (and had 2 cats) that have always been treated here. With this many animals I can say we frequent this animal hospital a lot! We have had well visits, emergency visits as well as the unfortunate visits where we had to euthanize my 2 elderly cats. The staff here is amazing! I believe my animals have been treated by just about every doctor at one time or another. However, I request Dr. Liz Ruark every chance I get. I just love the way she treats my dogs. She will get down on her knees and rub their bellies or pet their faces to make sure they are calm and comfortable with her before she even tries to do any examination. At every well visit she will discuss the different options for blood work and immunizations that may be needed. She has always taken her time with every visit treating my animals as if they are the only ones there. I especially appreciate that every single time one of my dogs needed tests done or were sick, Dr. Ruark would ALWAYS call to give us the results or check in and see how our Lilly, Bella or Molly was doing. The 2 occasions we had to make the decision to euthanize my cats, Dr. Ruark showed nothing but compassion for my cats and for me. She explained exactly what she was going to do and how my cats would react. They both passed away very peacefully and never did I feel rushed or abandoned by the staff, especially not by Dr. Ruark. It is horrible to go through the death or sickness of our furry family members but I am lucky to always have such wonderful care from the staff at VCA Lancaster, most especially Dr. Liz Ruark. read more
