It's time to update this review as it's been eight years and now under the ownership of VCA. I still love the doctors and the staff here although many have changed over the years but still some remain. I recently obtained a new puppy from a breeder, but unfortunately is ill. Dr Calle and nurse Sabrina took excellent care and all safety precautions to keep from contaminating any other areas wearing protective gear and having a room ready upon calling from parking lot if we could enter as we were aware of one of the highly contagious illnesses she has. Nurse Sierra has been wonderful too following up to check on us! After thorough examinations and many conversations, ensuring I understood everything, I was very impressed as I always have been! I love that they accept true companion, which pays direct if you have that insurance. They gave me a puppy goodie bag loaded with all kinds of stuff more than I've ever been given before. They are assisting me very well, keeping very detailed notes and providing me whatever I need. Offering advice whenever I call as we get through healing the puppy. My only caveat is prices are outrageous when it comes to spaying. I asked for a quote on a 65 pound one year-old golden doodle and with blood work and they are asking for $1600 and that is not even laparoscopy spraying, which they no longer do as I was told nobody has the training for it. That's quite disappointing as that's a ridiculous price. Most insurance companies will only give you back $250 and some only give you $100 and some don't even cover it at all. Sadly , I will not be proceeding with spaying here like I used to and we'll have to find a different hospital that is cheaper. I've already called around and found another for half the price. I did enjoy also that I didn't have to go to reception to pay. They quickly texted me a link while I was in the room with the doctor and I was able to pay right there off my phone. I still highly recommend this hospital and it is still my first choice. read more

When I called Rutherford animal hospital to ask a simple question about my bunny, the girl named Alex answered the phone, not only did she have a very nasty attitude, but it seemed like she hated her job. She said "due to your pet never being here before I can't give you any information, the next appointment is the end of may so until then it is what it is". Being that there is very few vets in the area that care for exotic animals such as rabbits, I figured they might be able to help me with a SIMPLE thing. Thankfully I didn't have an emergency because they way this girl spoke to me on the phone, I wouldn't take any of my pets here.... ever. If you love your pet, please DO NOT TAKE HIM HERE. My dog was misdiagnosed two years ago. They treated my dog for a skin condition. Their philosophy is let's prescribe meds and see what happens. I've heard this for the past three months. Took my boy to Marsh Vet Hospital in Verona. One look at him and the doctor said "your dog had Canine Parvovirus". He gave my boy a thorough examination and said his immune system is compromised. If caught earlier he could have been saved. My boy suffered badly for the past three months. Now he's DEAD. I've been taking my dog here for several years. Staff is very friendly. I brought my dog for a checkup visit today that included a Bordetella vaccine and heartwarm/tick disease test. We did the same exact visit one year ago on 11/8/22 and the cost has increased by 38%! Last year the total was $265 and this year it was $365. That's quite a big jump in one year. Here's the breakdown from 2022 to 2023: Exam: 107.50 to 129.00 -- 20% increase Bordetella: 41.80 to 61.20 -- 48% increase HW/Tick Test: 129.95 to 216.00 -- 66% increase I understand businesses are also impacted by inflation, but these increases are out of line. Is it really necessary to fleece pet owners like this? Seems excessive and greedy. I feel bad for people that have more than one animal. Costs are going to really add up. What a shame. Update: I sent an email to them as suggested, but no one has called me yet. Seems like everyone gets the same canned reply. Update 2: 12/6/23 - waited almost a month and still no one called. Went in to visit the office again to speak with a manager and got an assistant supervisor. I expressed my concerns and the reply I got was that I am lucky because the office only had 2 price increases this year, while one of their other offices had three. Essentially, the explanation I received was that it's due to inflation. Two price hikes in 1 year? Totally out of line. How does the cost of a common vaccine go up 48% in one year? Absurd! Start off by saying the office staff is absolutely wonderful, very sweet and very welcoming The vet techs are also amazing especially christine and Katie The main review is for Dr Vokal she has been absolutely wonderful since my dog has been diagnosed with IVDD. She also performs acupuncture on her as well. Not only does she treat the dog but she follows up and actually cares. He bedside manner is wonderful and it really makes a difference. Unfortunately I have seen her many time in the past few months due to multiple episodes with my dog including, seizures, back pain, exams, acupuncture, and so on but other then having to pay a bill at the end of the visit this is such a huge improvement to my other vet that I used to go to. I have a few vets between my house and Rutherford but I wouldn't dare go anywhere else at this point. I'm grateful that Katie referred me to this place. I will be going here for all my future and current animals from here on out as long as the same staff is still working there. Also the place is always clean as it should be being a medical environment. My last vet was always unprepared, unprofessional and not as sanitary once the main person retired. So again, I'm grateful for everything the staff has done for me so far in Rutherford and hopefully they can help get my dog through these times. No you don't live here, no you don't know my cats or my house, I'm here for you to diagnose my pet's health, not tell me to buy a fourth cat tree. Prices are ridiculous, wait times are super painfully long, and the veterinary assistants are not too useful for other than telling them what you will tell the doctor is the reason why you came to the vet in the first place. Neither doctor nor assistant listen when you give them instructions, like, please do not wrap my cat up in a towel as that will upset him. Meanwhile, they wrap him up and he's hissing and screaming up a storm. I would sign a waiver to handle the cat myself, but the pretentious staff here assume they know better than you. Nearly killed my other cat; gave her two shots, then decided it would have been a smart idea to check for allergies. So, thirty minutes later, puking and shitting everywhere, my cat nearly went into anaphylaxis. To add insult to injury they made us pay for the follow up medicinal treatments to keep the cat alive. They no longer keep animals overnight for treatment, so the cat I brought in which had a broke leg, and needed to be fix, left largely untreated. Avoid any hospital managed by VCA its just corrporate greed. I normally do not put reviews, but if you love your pet and you don't want him close to dying and getting charged overprice, stay away from this place. My dog has been healthy all his 13 years, took him for an exam / consultation (120.60) a rabies shot (59.50), they suggested the DA2P-Pv Vaccine (77.65), which I foolishly agreed since we are planning to travel overseas, was there for over an hour, I work from home so had limited time and needed to get back home after my hour break. My dog seemed fine, he pooped normal at the vet office, but then he threw up a yellow liquid and that's when the doctor said that he should stay "to keep an eye on him" and that the vaccine may had giving him a bad reaction. I again foolishly agreed. Left him there at 2:45PM, I then get a phone call at 3PM at my home office from the vet stating that my dog is in bad shape and that they needed to administer IV Catheter Peripheral (68.00) and Anesthesia (82.00) and lastly another charge for Pre/Post Vaccine Reaction 29.10 (what a crock) Long story short ended up paying 437.65, I honestly do not see anything wrong with my dog, he is running, eating, playing like he always does, there is no proof that they administered anesthesia and all the other things they added in my bill. I know we are going through a financial crisis, (Thanks Joe Biden) But that doesn't give you the right to rip people off, I am too affected by this terrible economy, but whatever, it is what it is. Tonight our ferret Murr let out a scream we never heard before. When we ran to check on him he was limping and pulling his leg up in toward his body. Fearing a broken bone we frantically started calling the local emergency clinics. None of them had a vet that treated exotics. We usually see Dr. Beeber in Little Falls but they were closed. So we called Rutherford Animal Hospital where we know Dr Beeber also practices and they told us to bring him right in. Cindy the technician and Dr. Petrone were so wonderful with him. They really fussed over him and gave him TLC. Best part.. his arm isn't broken! The bill was super reasonable as well. This is a great clinic staffed with incredible people who really love animals. VCA saved my dog and got the proper diagnosis when nobody else would. My 12 year old miniature pincher Butter had fallen Ill. He was treated by my original vet, who did not run bloodwork and just chalked up his illness to a sensitive stomach from antibiotics, even when I insisted there was more. Another vet suggested I come to VCA, which I did. I liked that it was open seven days a week with longer hours than the other clinics. That way, if anything happened outside of business hours, I knew there would be a good chance somebody could care for him. Yes they do charge slightly more than the other vets- and I do mean SLIGHTLY! But as far as I'm concerned at this stage in his life I want the best care I can possibly afford. They were honest and compassionate about his situation and prognosis(diabetes ketoacidosis.)The staff was personable and understanding. They let me stay in a room with him and spend heartfelt time before he was admitted for treatment. They stabilized his condition and got him to the best state I had seen in the close to a month period that he took his decline. He came home 2 days earlier than expected, greeted his kitty bff, and went on a vigorous walk! Yes I can still tell that there are some affects from his illness, but I am optimistic for the first time in a while. I recommend VCA to people that need the best care possible for these delicate times. read more

My Sydney has been going to the Rutherford Animal Hospital since I adopted her 2 years ago. 4 weeks ago I bought her in because she had diarrhea for 3 days. She was examined and given medication. The diarrhea continued for 3 weeks regard less of the additional medication that they tried. I woke up with her diarrhea everywhere 3 weeks later and I called to make an appointment to bring her back in . This was on a Tuesday. I was told by Lynn that there were no availabilities for appointments until next week. Seriously? They were treating her for 3 weeks with no good results and they could not fit her in? I took her to an emergency Room that took care of her and found that she was allergic to chicken. In the meantime, four years of endless appointments and surgeries mean nothing to this organization. I was treated like a new customer coming for the first time. I had my records sent to me and I bought them to another local veterinarian. (By the way, the new vet price was almost half to walk in, compared to Rutherford animal hospital). I'm done. The sad part is that they really have a couple of great doctors! NOT FAIR is being charged $99.50 for a Exam/ConsultationWell Patient that I didn't request or get. I called the office to explain I didn't want or need a Wellness visit and was told because the DOCTOR gave the shot I was charged the $99.50. OUTRAGES! Ask for the technician to give the shot and save 100 bucks. The technician was very kind and animal friendly. Her name is KIKI and a shout out to her for wonderful disposition. A week ago, we had to say goodbye to Crowley, after a long struggle with diabetes and, ultimately, heart failure. He was a good cat and our hearts are broken. Bear with me while I have a say about our experience with his final days. A few weeks ago, he began having trouble breathing, and we took him to our regular veterinary practice, #rutherfordanimalhospital, which is owned by #VCAanimalhospitals. After over $1K in tests and x-rays, it was determined that he had heart failure, and that we could bring him home to be with us, with the instructions that if he stopped eating or seemed like he was struggling, we should call immediately. Last Friday morning, we called the hospital because he was having trouble breathing and was in distress. I left messages for both vets who treat him regularly, and was very detailed about his condition. I never got a call back, and we ended up finding a traveling vet who could come to the house and put him to sleep with kindness and dignity. But it took all day to find someone, and poor Crowley suffered. It was terrible. The next morning, I called the Rutherford Animal Hospital to let them know what happened. Although the receptionist offered her condolences, she had no response about the vets not calling us back, except to confirm that our records showed that we called. I again left a message for our vets, saying that I was extremely upset. I didn't get a callback until Monday, and the only thing the vet had to say was that she wasn't in on Friday. I was angry and asked what the point of a group practice is, if you can't get help when you need it. All she offered was for me to speak to an office manager. I agreed, and she told me to expect a call. Well, I never did get a phone call from that manager. I guess #rutherfordanimalhospital #VCAanimalshospitals don't care. Ridiculous that they make you call the poison control hotline where you have to pay an additional $70...plus their fee of having of $100 emergency. I completely understand the emergency fee but why do we even need to call poison control and pay the fee? We obviously came here for a reason. I've been to other animal hospitals for a similar situation and our vet did not have us call poison control nor pay that additional fee. Also, most vets, even in emergent situations, will run you through what will be done and an estimated of what you will be expected to pay. I am touched by and grateful for the TLC our Gracie must have received during a recent stay at Rutherford Animal Hospital. Shortly before, she was diagnosed with a serious heart condition. Although the hospital has our complete confidence after thirty years of excellent service by Dr. Beeber and his team, I was very stressed at even the thought of boarding her for a week. In my head, I knew it was going to be okay. My heart told me something different. Fortunately, the hospital administrator, Kathy Sylvester, was kind enough to spend a long time discussing my concerns and allaying my fears. I left home knowing Gracie was going to be in wonderful hands. I am delighted to be able to say that when we picked her up she was in great shape. Stay away from these people. They left me in the examination room waiting for the doctor for 45 minutes. The doctor came in and spent all of five minutes with my cat. She said she would write up a treatment plan. Another 20 minutes later they came back with an extensive testing program for almost $1000. The doctor never told me what might be wrong. I left paying 88 dollars to learn absolutely nothing. I took my kitty to another vet. He diagnosed her with advanced cancer in her leg within five minutes. Stay away!!!!! The MOST unprofessional place I have ever been in my life -- between all of the restaurants, schools, organizations, doctors, etc. I have ever dealt with. About 2 months ago, my sweet dog was tragically hit and killed by a car. I rushed my dog to Rutherford Animal Hospital, but she was already gone. I was a mess - I don't even remember the whole debacle, but it's not even about that, it's about what happened following this horrific time of my life. While at the vet the day of my dog's untimely death, I paid in full for her individual cremation. They told me I would have them back in a couple of weeks. About a month goes by -- still heard nothing. I decided to call Rutherford Animal Hospital to find out what was going on with my dog's cremains. Turns out my sweet dog's body was STILL in their freezer. They NEVER sent her body out for cremation. Can you believe that? A dog's dead body sitting in a freezer for over a month. What would they have done if I never called to check on her cremains? Who knows who was to blame for this. I don't even care- there was barely an apology. The receptionist had to deal with me and the office manager NEVER reached out. They offered a 20% refund for my "troubles". What a joke. I didn't even accept the 20% - felt like it was insulting. To add insult to injury, when I went to FINALLY pick up my dog's cremains, the date of her birth on the paw print was WRONG. They put 2010 when my dog was in fact born in 2009. There's no way they can fix this since clearly there is no longer a paw to print. Again, NOT apologetic at all. Oh, and a week later they were more than happy to send me a receipt for the cremation, but NEVER sent a sympathy card. I always believed that people who work in the veterinary field really cared for animals. This place doesn't care about the animals who they service. All they care about is making money. I went on multiple ferret websites to find a vet, including ferrethealth.org/vets, which is really helpful in quickly locating a place. Rutherford Animal Hospital was the place closest to where I live, which is really convenient because it's right near my dad's business! I have seen Dr. Cantamessa multiple times now and am so grateful to have found her! My one ferret Duchess just got diagnosed with Insulinoma and Dr. Cantamessa has been very vigilant in trying to get her blood sugar up. I think we've been successful as my little Dutchie has been a lot more active recently, climbing all over everything, and being her crazy old self again!! She has also been monitoring my other ferret, Grizzly, who has been having all kinds of weird issues that we are trying to get to the bottom of. Dr. Cantamessa is very practical in treating him instead of running all kinds of unnecessary (and probably expensive) tests right off the bat. I feel comfortable with the attention and care that they are both receiving, and it goes without saying that Dr. Cantamessa really knows her stuff! Additionally, I have never had any problems making or cancelling appointments. I feel that the wait times are reasonable and the receptionists are always very understanding and accommodating. This is what was said to me by the receptionist: "I can't find the price in the computer, you must come in {and pay} for an office visit to find out the price". I booked an appointment there for my puppy's digestion disorder. The front desk is neither very professional nor welcoming. I was called in 10 minutes late which is, to me, pretty acceptable. The doctor's assistant was wonderful, she really seemed to care about the pup and liked her job, which is why I'm comfortable giving the place the 1 little star on this review. The doctor was okay (but far from fantastic). She was very dry and didn't seem to be listening to my concerns or questions. She answered before I had even finished formulating anything. She didn't ask questions about the pup's diet, which was essential to his condition. It was all about testing testing testing (of course, it costs money). The doctor was also very bossy with me. While the (poor) pup was about to get a rectal touch (sorry for providing details here), she almost yelled at me: "don't give him treats right now he is already sick". Even though she might be right, I certainly did not appreciate her tone towards me and her lack of compassion for the puppy. Finally, the 2 things that made me white this negative review: -the checkout took 45 minutes of me, waiting for the front desk to do their jobs, which was: 1) giving me dog diet food, 2) giving me some medication, 3) providing a pack of probiotics and 4) charging me for it. Everything seems to be very disorganized, nobody knew what they were doing and I wasted a tremendous amount of time in that place. -as mentioned above they gave me a pack of probiotics for the pup that they charged me 55 dollars for. These very same probiotic bag costs 12 dollars online. Personally, I call that a rip off. I will never be going there again because they wasted my time and are not trustworthy, plus they are very average (not to say poor) at what they do. read more

I've been bringing my Pug here for years and have had a good experience with the Vets. The Vets have always been sweet to her and some even smother her. (Perhaps they are partial to pugs as there was a big picture of two pugs in the waiting area.) At our most recent yearly exam they did bloodwork, heartworm test, stool test, checked her teeth and eyes, checked heartbeat, and felt around her organs. My pug has an anal gland issue so they also did the "expression" procedure which I won't go into detail on. She was up to date on shots, so they didn't push anything additional which I was happy about. Also want to note, I asked to get an estimate on all the procedures prior to having anything done, and the vet tech obliged. She came back with the itemized list. I had the option to opt out of anything. Also, the next day they called back with the results of the tests. So the customer service is good. The only downside is the price. I was torn between a 3 and 4 star rating because of the price I pay. I always end up spending more than $300 each visit. Is that normal? That is what I used to pay in the city. I feel it should be less in NJ. I am tempted to find another Vet to see if I am being overcharged, but I really like the Vets here. read more

If you want to spend unnecessary money go to this hospital. Unfortunately I lost my pet 2 weeks ago and sent for her to be cremated and return, I had to call a few times to see if she returned. I finally called again and they said they returned her sorry. Are you kidding me? We have an English Bulldog and we looked far and wide around Northern NJ to ensure our pup would be with a place that understood the uniqueness of our breed. Rutherford, from Day 1, was lovely in welcoming us in with open arms (and paws). They treat our little Monster like family: showering him with pets and treats. Our dog never has any issues coming in with the team and letting them take him away for a bit. We've been coming here now for almost a year and we still cant be happier! They also do boarding, in case you need someone to watch your pet for a long period of time - they let you book the dates in advance and, if anything pops up that you need to adjust, they are extremely flexible. read more
