Money hungry company!! They are always trying to charge extra for things you don't need, they sent me to another vet cause they were booked for a checkup but won't accept those checkup records 3 days later when I tried to schedule with Vca even though they sent me to that vet!! i asked to get blood work done but they apparently need the extra money for a check up, that literally only consist of lookimg at their teeth and listening to their heart, in order for them to do the bloodwork, it's very upsetting cause I take 4 animals here and now have to find a new vet to take my animals to read more

My cat had an abscess on his chin that showed up over the weekend and I got put on the waitlist. Soon after I was notified about an opening. They went over their treatment plan/estimate and wanted to start conservative. Their plan worked and there was no pressure to get any more services. The price was more than fair and he was treated very well. Just a day later and he's back to normal. Aftercare instructions were also very clear and all my questions were answered. My girl broke her nail down to the base during Thanksgiving dinner and VCA could get her in first. Not only was the staff extremely professional and kind, they gave her top notch care and saved me about 1k in contrast to what the other emergency vets and my primary were looking at charging. The vet tech helped me get my giant dog into the car and lifted her from the back- taking most of the brunt and she gave me very specific and kind instructions for after care. Had appointment... For my two...dogs...arrived early...and one of my pups got the vet jitters ...and ..made his way..back to the parking lot......just so happens....my boy made it behind another car ....it was the doc... As ...The doc was heading in....she turned and gave me the rudest and coldest ..eye contact...didn't offer help..or make any warming remarks ..as my boy was clearly scared... Made inside..for their shots.......mmmm..but the two minute glance over for both my dogs cost me 85.00 each......and you claim it was an exam fee...WTF....i already filled out the pre online screen .....their health was great and i told you that in person during the visit... I Didn't have an exam appt...didn't ask for one either..... it was just for vacc updates.. Moving on to the shots ...so i get asked by the vet tech how my dog reacts... I tell her if he doesn't know you ....he doesn't like you around his head or neck... ... What does she do... She kneels down and pulls him in close around his neck... So he begins to growl ........I tell her he doesn't like you up in his space.... and not to put your arms around his neck... She continues to do so.... Well ok....put a muzzle on him...keep it safe..... Ok...But let's still continue to put your arms around his neck to make him uncomfortable as hell... .... And let's just disregard that I mentioned that he doesn't like it... My next dog is a sweet boy .....there were no issues with him... So the dogs get their shots... Next thing I know is the vet tech decides to give my dogs each a cookie... I'm thinking she'll try to be sweet to my dog and hand feed him .....to maybe make some amends and make him feel safe... ... Nope she throws it across the room and hits..him square in the head ......good grief..... Oh ...... I get hit with a $400 bill... $85 each for the 2.6 minute "exam"...... And then of course for the shots and vaccinations..... By the way .....I recommend you check other more pet loving friendly vets.... and their cost of vaccinations and..... " exams"!... I came to VCA because of a new residence.. However.... I will be returning to my previous vet who is much more pet loving ...friendly and warming....and their costs are reasonable.... Remember .....when my dog ran out in the parking lot because he was scared ......and ran into the doctor... Unacceptable service when it came to our dog and her puppies. First we came in for an ultrasound to which the doctor didn't want to answer any questions and was rushed to get to the next customer instead of answering any pregnancy questions for a first time mother. Due to covid we could only speak to Dr at car for 2 minutes as he spoke about his wife's pregnancy. When I called back to speak to the doctor, the receptionist refused to let me speak to one and I could only ask her questions. The DR did tell us we need to schedule an appointment within 48 hours of mom giving birth. Upon calling to schedule appointment, we were not allowed to book ahead of time to plan ahead. When it came time to schedule, we were pushed out an extra 5 days before they'd see the mom and puppies. We show up today, 6 days after birth and now VCA refuses to see the mother and says, "oh this is a puppy appointment" even though the receptionist messed up when the whole point of the appointment was to check out the new mother AND puppies. Seems to be a recurring thing that VCA of Thornton only cares about $$$$ and getting multiple appointments and not working with someone even on Care Club plan. Not the first time either the receptionist has messed up. I will NOT be bringing my dogs back here NOR will I ever recommend them to someone else. I would recommend Community Pet Hospital on Washington. Their emergency service is top notch! read more

My dog needs his medicine, i have a standing Rx for him from this vet as well as another vet, however even though i have those medical records, they want to keep you only seeing them so they can charge for another visit, more fees, etc to dispense eye drop medications. So they would rather my dog go without his med's because they wont't accept a Rx and vet visit from other vet's. No thanks! read more

Me and my wife decided to give this place a try since we were not happy with our last Vet. We paid about $500 for some blood tests and other stuff you would think someone would call you with the blood test results but Noooooo !!!! We got some stupid Fu**ing excuse about a visiting Dr. and we're so sorry and blah blah blah. Our dog is a family member to us and deserves better follow up from your practice. Not a good 1st experience and we will not be going back there. NO FOLLOW UP. NO COMMUNICATION. NOT VERY PROFFESSIONAL. Do not bring your pets here you'll be sorry. Meanwhile our baby is still suffering. And the Dr. was very rude to me and when the Tech brought my dog back in the room she was almost dragging him from the neck area making him choke. read more

The vet that I had taken my pets to for years closed after the owner/lead vet retired, and many of their customers were referred to VCA Thornton. I wasn't too hesitant with going to a new location because my golden retriever Echo has always loved going to the vet (to the point where people ask what's wrong with her because dogs are supposed to hate the vet, haha). However, I was curious how this new vet would work our for us solely because Echo had been going to our previous vet her whole life. Her name was written on a whiteboard welcoming us to the facility and she immediately tried to go around the front desk to see the receptionists because people are her absolute favorite and she wasn't nervous at all, not that I expected her to be. We were seen by Dr. Mason who sat down on the floor where I had placed myself to keep Echo still just from the excitement of meeting new people. We were there for an overall checkup, an examination of a small bump, and a refill on previous allergy meds. Dr. Mason was very courteous and engaging and didn't just give Echo a once-over and go--he played with her and she gave him "the butt of affection" and got some long-awaited belly rubs to the point where she almost fell asleep from pure bliss. The checkup went well and Echo didn't want to leave after a vet assistant checked us out because she was soaking up the attention. I could even hear them talking about her in the back room, gushing over her, which always makes a pet owner happy to know their fur baby is loved by people that hardly even know them. We received a welcoming card and a follow-up phone call to check in on Echo afterwards and did have to go back a week or two later from some blocked anal glands that were cleared right up (and even though Echo really did not like that process, the second they finished, she was all hugs and kisses). I've been to vets that take a glance at the animals and prescribe some pain meds before shooing you out the door and VCA Thornton is on the opposite end of the spectrum from that unpleasant business. They aren't condescending with pet owners like I've seen other vets be, writing off concerns that owners have for abnormalities in their pets. I'm grateful to have found such wonderful people to take care of my girl and glad that they love her as much as she loves them. read more

I have used them for a couple of years now and everyone seems to be generally pleasant. My problem is the cost of their services. Everything they do is focused on getting you to enroll in the monthly subscription plan for your pet. They quote you an astronomically high price and then offer you the monthly plan as a way to "save" some money. In the end, you get financially screwed either way. I was given an estimate of almost $800 to neuter my dog. Other places charge roughly $100-$200. VCA is a nationwide chain. Switching my business somewhere local. read more

If I could give them zero stars I would. We made a painful decision to euthanize our dogs in May. Ripley is 13 and has hip dysplasia that was diagnosed via x-ray when she was just a puppy. Her pain meds were no longer doing their job. Her legs were going out from under her several times a day. Roscoe is nearly 13 and is deaf, arthritic, and has fecal incontinence. Both dogs frequently pee in the house due to their health issues and our attempts at mitigation have failed. If we were at a different point in our lives we might have been able to go to greater lengths to keep the dogs in our family, but we have a 3 year old and are expecting twins. The incontinence issues represent a health hazard to our family. So, since they have been together since they were puppies, we made the heart wrenching decision to put them down together. I was out of town, and my husband, having never been to their current vet, took them to the vet we had taken them to previously (I left this vet years ago due to issues with up-selling on their part), Firehouse, which is now VCA Thornton. He was treated disdainfully from the moment he walked in. He was informed that fecal incontinence is "an inconvenience" that should be dealt with, and that they do not euthanize "for convenience". Already upset, my husband opted to leave them for euthanization with VCA. The vet tech (no vet had seen them at this point) said that they could try adopting them out and that we would be notified once they had been seen by the vet. We were out of town for the following week, during which time no attempt to contact us was made by VCA Thornton. We had been charged nearly $500 for euthanasia to our credit card. I went through our mail upon return looking for a condolence card, but saw none. I called VCA Thornton asking for an explanation. Two days later I received a call back from the vet tech, who informed me that the vet had determined them perfectly healthy other than being arthritic, that they exhibited NONE of the conditions my husband had described, and that they were being placed with a senior dog rescue called Izzy's Place. The vet tech again informed me that they do not euthanize "for inconvenience". I asked to be given an update and was told, "of course." Izzy's Place has our dogs up for adoption and is woefully misrepresenting their treatment and health condition, assumably due to misinformation from VCA Thornton. They are lying about the dogs' ages, and nowhere mention any hip dysplasia, deafness, or fecal incontinence. Grossly, VCA Thornton performed surgery on Roscoe to remove teeth and on Ripley to remove teeth and fatty lipomas. As recently as August 2011, they were diagnosed by Banfield Animal Hospital in Northglenn as not needing surgery for either of these issues. They performed unneccsary and risky surgery on our dogs to make them "more adoptable". We are filing a complaint with the Colorado State Veterinary Board against VCA Thornton for their misconduct, and have filed a dispute with our credit card company for the euthanasia charges. read more

Moved to the area and had to take my dog for a check up since he seems to have seasonal allergies. Hoping I could see what may be going on with my dog, I decided to stop by this clinic and took up the offer of the first free pet check up they had out for bait. After my dog's examination, he had a hot spot on his chest so the vet tech took my dog into the back to shave the area and cleaned it and did a terrible job of shaving the area of his chest. More was shaved off than needed. Plus never have I ever been charged for cleaning such a simple wound at any vet where I've gone to (and this was not his first hot). They prescribed me some anti-fungal shampoo I've already used for my dog and did not work in the past. I've had my dog on flea medications and they just decided to add it on since it was a 'possiblilty'. He then gave me some anti-biotic for my dog for the hot spot. After having prescribed me some hypoallergenic dog food I left questioning what happened with my visit. Left with a bill of $130 for three useless things I didn't need. Keep in mind this was with the FREE pet examination. Didn't have the experience I thought I would. read more

I have no real complaints about this place. we've gone here for a few months now, and have always received great customer service. plus, since our pup is super energetic, I like that its almost always quiet in the lobby with minimal distractions. the doctors and techs have always been patient and gentle with our dog. they also always call after an appointment to check in. my only gripe is about the cost - I have been to other vets and paid less for similar service. plus, I appreciated the extra time they took one day to help me figure out what I could do with a stray dog that wandered into our yard. read more

I was pretty happy with our latest visit this month. Let me preface with this: I own a three year old pit mix who is a giant tub o' love, but he never really warmed up to the vets at this clinic when it was Firehouse. I have to admit, I never warmed up to their vets, either. They seemed more concerned with upsell than care, and that bothered me. So, when Ferris needed shots for an upcoming stay at doggy daycare, I was more than nervous. Dr. Pete and the staff put me at ease immediately. This is not Firehouse anymore! The entire staff was helpful and friendly, and Ferris warmed up to Dr. Pete instantly. We got the shots we needed with no pressure for extra services, a recommendation for a lepto vaccine later this spring before hiking, and a suggestion for Ferris to cut down on the treats (he's getting a little pudgy.) I have been to all the VCA Animal Hospitals around town - Firehouse being my typical vet. I have had wonderful experiences at Aspenwood and VCA Alameda, all of whom were very friendly and accommodating, working with me however possible to provide assistance to my little furry friend. It is unfortunate that I cannot say the same for VCA Thornton. Without actually ever needing to bring my cat to to this location (due to the fact that I live in close proximity to Firehouse), I have only on occasional needed to go Thornton to purchase food for my cat due to scheduling conflicts. Regardless, the front desk staff was very rude and condescending, making it seem as though I was there to obtain prescription food for black market resale as opposed to simply for feeding my cat. Today, I had called into this VCA to make sure that they had prescription food for my cat. The woman on the phone was fairly kind and stated she would assist me by calling my general vet and getting a copy of my prescription so that I could obtain the phone. Hours later, upon walking into the hospital, an unsmiling lady named Bobbi was immediately abrasive, challenging me that I had ever spoken to anyone on their staff because I could not remember the name of the individual. Eventually, they were able to figure out that the person who previously had worked the front desk had left for the day, so they called her and confirm that yes, indeed I had spoken with someone. The paperwork was apparently easy enough to find from there, but despite any attempt to lighten the mood with my kindness, the front desk lady remained stoic. When it comes to healthcare, regardless of it is for yourself or your pets, you want someone caring and endearing who will make you feel taken care of. This hospital, for the second time, has now made me feel bristled, and even though it is one of the few VCAs open on a Sunday, I would go out of my way not to visit this animal hospital for any reason, not even to purchase food. I will make sure that in the future, I am better scheduled so I can continue going to the kind VCAs down south and avoid the cruel demeanor of those in Thornton's VCA. read more

I would not recommend this place unless you want to get pushed into unnecessary surgery! I've went to this vet 2 times total and I will not be going back. My first time at VCA was fine. My cat just had a regular exam and they didn't do much. They offer first time guests a free exam to get you in the door. Good marketing technique. The next time, I had to call them after my cat got lily pollen all over his tail. I wasn't aware the pollen is toxic to cats, so I called VCA Thornton and they suggested I go to the nearby pet hospital if I wanted to be on the safe side. (This is the only reason I am giving them 2 stars for giving me advise over the phone.) My cat ended up spending the weekend in the pet hospital. After we picked him up, they wanted to do another blood test to double check his kidneys. Which I had no problem with. Better safe than sorry. This is when it went downhill... When I took my cat in for the blood tests at VCA, the male vet (I forget his name) did an ultrasound of my cats bladder and said he had bladder stones. He suggested I get an x-ray done for almost $200 dollars and then surgery to remove the stone for $2,000-$3,000. He also said I need to get this done quickly because it can lead to death. I never asked for an ultra sound, so I was surprised when they told me my cat had a stone and that he could die if they don't do surgery quickly. Obviously any pet owner will be concerned if they are told their pet could die. After hearing this, I went to another vet in Denver for a second opinion and an x-ray. They didn't see or feel any stones! The vet at this clinic said he would only believe the ultrasound picture that the VCA vet gave me, if a radiologist looked at it. I called VCA and the vet said a radiologist didn't look at this and that it would cost $150 to have that done. A few months went by and I decided to take my cat in for his teeth to get cleaned at a nearby vet clinic that had excellent online reviews. I talked to the vet about the stones again and they said they could do an ultrasound again to stop ALL concerns I had. They did the ultrasound and said his bladder was perfect!! Clearly, this vet will be my permanent vet moving forward. They are caring, compassionate, and actually know how to care for pets unlike VCA Thornton. To conclude this long review, VCA Thornton only cares about making money by using scare tactics. read more

My Cat had been acting strangely this morning, not eating or drinking water and her eye looked swollen. I went off to work and hoped she would come out of it herself as she has done in the past with a heat blanket and rest. I got home from work at 7:00 pm and Phoebe was in worse shape then I had left her. I immediately called every pet hospital around Thornton area, all which had a near $100 visit fee alone. VCA Thornton animal hospital did not have an emergency visit fee. Even though they close at 8:00pm they were able to get us in immediately. Dr. Lori Ouzoonian and vet tech Pam did an outstanding job with getting Phoebe into the office and treating her even when Phoebe was showing signs of irritation. Vey pleased with my late visit. Phoebe is now home and eating. I will be going back in future for any of my cats needs. read more

I would not recommend this place... the 1st vet tech that we had, Jess, was RUDE, NOT FRIENDLY at all... said nothing nice, left us sitting in a room for almost 30 minutes, with no updates, no "the doctor should be in shortly", nothing!! NO CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS AT ALL!! She seemed to be really friendly with her friend up front at the front desk, as they were whispering & then giggling, then they would look at me, so I believe that they both were rude & you should talk about people right in front of them!! They are expensive & will charge you for absolutely the littlest of things! The rabies tag that they gave me with the metal s-shaped hook, came off, cause they are so cheaply done here & got charged $5.00, after spending $300 on the 1st visit, then on 2nd visit to get booster shots & bloodwork, another $275, got charged for the tag!! What a joke!! Then 1 lady brought her dogs to work & got upset with me as I was paying my bill, checking out with my dogs, like it was my fault my dogs barked at her dogs... AMAZING. AMAZING. AMAZING. I was passing through Thornton on my way to Louisiana with my two dogs when one of them cut their paw HORRIBLY. I have never been to the area before so I looked up the closest vet with good reviews and found VCA. They had a full schedule that day but Dr. Pete was AMAZING and got us in right away. I felt so bad because we were getting blood all over their clinic and I was frantic but the entire staff was very patient and helpful to us. They were kind and very fast to get us in and processed through. They put my dog before the paperwork which was a first for me. Of course I did fill out all forms before the clinic took him from me but they had their priorities straight and I appreciate that! Dr. Pete ended up needing to schedule surgery right away for my poor pup and was attentive to my injured dog, my second dog and myself. He was very informative and answered all of my questions and was so wonderful about reassuring me that my dog was going to be just fine as I was crying and never rushed me. He walked me through what to expect with the surgery and post operatively and called me as soon as he was done. The front office staff were just as kind and made everything SO EASY. I called later that night with a few concerns expecting to talk to an assistant but Dr. Pete got on the phone right away and once again answered all of my questions with grace and kindness. If I weren't just passing through I would have Dr. Pete be our vet for the rest of our lives. The compassion and care that he has can be so hard to find and I will not only remember, but highly recommend, him and his office forever. I never once felt like a number or a way for them to make money as I have in some offices in the past. I brought my dogs to VCA after moving to Colorado from Arizona. Dr. Katie Powers spent over 45 minuets with me, going over the history of both dogs and addressing any questions I had. She explained all of the necessary things they needed to be protected in Colorado. There was no pressure or "sales" techniques like many other vets. Several days later I got a hand written letter from her. My dogs are my children and I take their health very seriously. I felt like Dr. Powers gave me the right advance and suggestions without over selling anything. She was warm and friendly and extremely knowledgeable. read more

We've been using VCA for a couple of years. We've paid them thousands of dollars in fees, monthly service costs, appointments, vaccines, stitches, etc...Our male cat of 8 years had an emergency last week and not only did VCA turn us away, send us to a vet that couldn't help us, but the front desk staff was overly rude about it. Since we had to go to a different vet, then another vet, then to an emergency room in Wheat Ridge, our cat passed away from his blood clot. VCA should be ashamed. The emergency vet said that had VCA administered a blood thinner and pain killers when we first noticed the issue, our cat would still be with us...We are soo mad and sad our VET turned us away...we spent hours running around NorCo looking for someone to help him only for his kidneys to fail 9 hours after we called VCA...we had to put him down...he wasn't ready, it wasn't his time, and I 100% blame VCA for not taking him in for an EMERGENCY! Pathetic and can't believe how we were treated by the staff...you killed our cat...Lastly, little did we know, cuz our vet sucks, our Persian cat had HCM....we didn't know they are prone to it, they didn't do any testing for it, and definitely didn't have us doing preventative medicines to keep him from the end, which is blood clots that kill and are super painful. I learned about VCA a few days ago after my German Shepherd unfortunately got into a brawl with another dog and needed immediate treatment for torn skin and some muscle damage. Dr. Pete and the entire staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and took good care of her. They were very accommodating, all the way down to rescheduling an appointment at no additional cost due to transportation issues. After rescuing a stray dog, we took him in to VCA because we saw they had a "Free First Visit" coupon online. Dr. DeTolve is extremely friendly, personable, and you can tell he really cares about animals. He took a genuine interest in our mutt, Calvin, and gave us RECOMMENDATIONS on which vaccinations and tests to give him, instead of telling us and having us just get the most expensive and unnecessary treatments. The receptionist is also extremely friendly. Their Vet Technicians are a little less enthusiastic/personable, but they're definitely not rude by any means. VERY expensive. It seemed they cared more about trying to sell me $4.5 a pound food than what we came there for. Our dog had been scratching her ears a lot and we thought she had an infection. They barely examed her ears and said nothing was wrong. Instead they just keep going on and on about prescription science diet and that we were pretty much bad pet owners if we didn't buy that food from them. A few weeks later we went to Banfield and sure enough, she had an ear infection. So not only that but their teeth cleaning and wellness plan are ridiculous expensive. Teeth cleaning at Banfield is only $250 and it includes everything. VCA is $700. Also the wellness plan is half the price and included all dental work. And they charge more for senior dogs! Completely outrageous. Don't fall for their free first exam. read more

Dr Kit Hunsberger is very knowledgeable professional and kind She remembers everything about my two cats which I find very impressive. I was very nervous taking my 9 year old lab beagle mix, Bentley, to a new vet. We moved from Aurora to Brighton and my dog hates long car rides. I did a lot of google searches on vets and came across VCA Thorton. My boss takes her dog to the one in Aurora and has said good things about the company as a whole. So I set up a consult to be seen by Dr. Pete so we could decide if this is who we wanted to trust our baby with. One of the reasons I asked for Dr. Pete was because he also went to MSU in Michigan for vet school, my husband and I are both from Michigan as well. I'm glad I chose Dr. Pete for the care of Bentley. At the consult appointment he was so kind and patient and let Bentley take his time coming up to him. He carefully showed my skiddish dog that it was okay to be looked at. As a Registered Dental Hygienist, my main concern for Bentley was his oral health, sadly it's been since 2016 since his last dental visit. I knew it was time to bite the bullet and have his teeth cleaned and have the ones that were periodontally effected removed. Dr Pete assured me that everything would be okay and that he wanted to run lab work and X-rays prior to the procedure due to him being a senior dog, I trusted that everything would go well. He called the following day to let me know Bentley was healthy and cleared for surgery. On the morning of surgery I was a nervous reck leaving my baby to be put under sedation knowing full well there would most likely be several teeth that needed extracted. I gave Dr Pete my consent to do what needs to be done as I wouldn't really be able to answer my phone due to being busy with my own patients but I did tell him he could call my office phone for anything. I received a call later in the morning from him on my offices phone saying that Bentley was doing great under anesthesia but the X-rays had shown that seven teeth would need to be extracted - one being a root tip. I gave him the go ahead and I'm so happy I did! Bentley was sore and out of it the first night home but with lots of love and cuddles he did great.. he was back to himself the next day! Dr Pete even called the next day to see how Bentley was doing and to see if I had any questions- how kind and thoughtful for him to check in! I'm looking forward to his 2 week follow up to see how the extractions are healing and see the X-rays of his teeth (per my personal request). Wow, such an amazing experience! Our new puppy had an ear infection and the vet saw him right away one morning. They were so accommodating and friendly, my husband and I were so pleased with the way they treated our puppy. The care is very thorough and we highly recommend this vet. Not to mention, our vet is a Michigan State grad - they have a very reputable vet program and GO STATE! :) read more
