I visited this location on pet vaccination day to get my sweet cat vaccinated. I waited in a short line after checking in during my appointment time. The staff and volunteers were so kind. I was a little nervous letting my cat go by herself, I wasn't sure how my cat would respond. Everyone reassured me she would be ok. Meanwhile, there were plenty of gently used toys, collars and other products to look through. One of the staff members even got an ice cream for my mini me from one of the street vendors. I had the opportunity to volunteer at this PAWS location and I am super impressed by the loving care of all of the creatures here as well as how the staff treated me as a volunteer! Exceptionally clean facility with strict infection control policies in place. I was welcomed, given an orientation, provided with a gown/gloves (for the kitty room) and shown how to interact carefully with the animals. I was able to spend some time with the kittens and a few rooms of dogs. I fell in love with one dog, of course, but we are not able to adopt at this time. I was happy to hear that someone else, a very lucky family, took her home shortly after my visit. I am so grateful to the whole team at PAWS Chicago and wish everyone a very Happy New Years! IF YOU WANT TO WASTE YOUR TIME BEING STRUNG ALONG, IGNORED AND REJECTED BY RUDE, LYING EMPLOYEES GO TO PAWS CHICAGO! I feed stray cats and of course one of them got pregnant. I brought her inside and took care of mom and her two kittens but I could not keep them became I already have 5 other furbabies that mom didn't get along with. I knew mom had to nurse atleast 3mths so in the meantime I called 10-15 no kill shelters desperately trying to surrender this sweet cat family. I'd used Paws Chicago spay/neuter program years ago so was familiar with their services. I was not a fan of the their cold/distant/nonchalant employees but I tried to ignore it for the greater good of the furbabies. They NEVER answer the phone so I communicated via email for a month trying to organize the drop-off. Even years later, I encountered the same type of employees. They initially pretended like they would help this cat family but that suddenly downgraded to "moms not adoptive, only wanted her kids". FINE! Even human babies in foster care are more desirable than older kids. So I tried to make an appt for surrendering the kittens. SILENCE. I tried a 3rd time WHY!!! CALL ME CRAZY I APPLIED TWICE TO BE A CAT COLONY CARETAKER WITH PAWS AND NEVER HEARD BACK. Then I get an email "We will not offer a timeframe for drop-off" W Y L I E ,YET YOUR LITTLE VILLAGE LOCATION IS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC WITHOUT AN APPT WHICH YOU WONT GIVE ME. So basically NOW you don't even want the kitten but your staff is either too stupid or patronizing to just say that. I've had Aries as a 3 month old though kitten . A coworker had to give him up . I wasn't sure about spay / neutering until my apartment smells of cat . I have changed cat litters thinking that was the problem . This ammonia scent is strong. Looked online and found this organization. Took a later stage pregnant, one year old feral cat for spay- She would've died if I did take her to ER vet afterwards-#1 Hemorrhaging at uterine stump/#2 two areas of left ovarian pedicle. Had to have blood transfusion and multiple days of hospitalization. $4200 to save her! I don't know who the surgeon was at Lurie at this moment, it's probably on my paperwork. But after utilizing the clinics feral spay service many years, I will no longer take a cat there. I could've had this done safely at my regular vet for say, $500, but it cost me total $4300! Unreal! They screwed up bad. These are not the typical complication risks, this is rare and they really screwed up, especially letting me take her home in this deadly condition! I am disgusted with my experience from Paws Chicago Lurie Family Spay-Neuter Clinic. I took my two dogs to get spayed today and my heart is literally breaking from the experience. I feel as if I took my babies to a butcher. I get a call from the surgeon telling me they had an issue with my little one. They told me that she was so stressed during the prep that her eye popped out. Her eye literally popped out of her head, they put it back in and sewed it shut to try and save her eye. She might lose sight in her right eye. We won't know that for another two weeks or so. The surgeon tried to make excuses that this happens to Shih tuzs and had I noticed her eyes popping out before from stress. If they know this is a risk for Shih tuzs then why weren't some other precautions taken? I ask myself, how were they treating my dog that she freaked out so much that her eye popped out. They obviously weren't treating her as an individual dog, but more as a number. They didn't care that she was having a stress attack. When I got my dogs home, I realize that the little one was covered in dried #2. It was all on her backside and on her back paws. How is that sanitary post-surgery? They couldn't even clean her up? On another note, the wound looks as if someone cut her open with an old kitchen knife and the stitches closing her eye look like a butch job as well. I feel sick to my stomach that I took my dogs to Paws Chicago Lurie Family Spay-Neuter. I thought they were supposed to be professionals, but it looks more like they are a butcher shop, getting as many spay and neuters done. I have an appointment at my vet tomorrow morning and I'm hoping they can give me more information and help my little fur baby. read more

This place is open but don't try to call them they only work via email. So if you want to schedule an appointment you need to email them. The day of your appointment you have to sign in on the sign in sheet on the chair and wait in your car until they call you. Then they answer any questions you might have. You also pay via email. I'm happy with the way this place answered all my questions and concerns. I took my kitten here to be neutered and get his shots. He's one happy playful kitten now since he's allowed to run and jump cause he couldn't a few days after his surgery. read more

Like so many many others, you cannot leave a voice message as suggested by clinic manager Rosario. You cannot make an appointment except by email and it takes weeks and weeks. You have to live in the neighborhood, go wait an hour in hopes of making an appointment. So sad they have a this great $5million renovation that has made the entire establishment useless and unavailable to 90% of the south side animal TnR community. Getting stray and feral cats spayed/neutered chipped n tipped at PAWS is not an option anymore. From the other reviews, just getting low cost vet care is not an option here either. I've driven 370 miles this month to get 2 cats TNR'd I have the means to do that for 2 cats. That means there are ?-1,000's-? of cats that cannot be helped. Expect to wait an additional hour/two hours after scheduled appointment. I gave this place three stars because when I called in to check up on my dogs well being I was told EVERYTHING was fine! However, when I picked up my fur baby her eyes were swollen from crying, and red. I was told she was stressed out. Not once was i told anything when I made my check up call earlier in the day. Later on in the day there was a note on the bottom of my dogs invoice stating they called and left a voicemail regarding the stress of my dog and to pick up her up early. Had I known this when I did my check up call I would've picked up my fur baby a long time ago! No trace of call was made nor voicemail. Also a secondary number was left and there was no contact made! HOWEVER the vet-tech Jennifer explained the procedure really well and the process so three stars to that! UPDATE: After the cone was taken off my dog formed a horrible skin condition. It's unknown if she caught something there at the clinic. It's now spreading all over her back! Could the spaying process have messed with her hormones? Updating as of 11/03/21. About a week ago, the awesome vets at Paws, specifically Dr. H. Gave me their insight into Zooey's condition. I've spent the last ten days digesting it all. Originally I was going to tell Dr H that I didn't want to medicate Zooey for what's suspected to be a focal seizure. But the last 3 days have proven my instincts wrong. I'll be messaging the team in the AM that we do indeed need to start medication as my sweet girl needs a bit of help to deal with what's happening. My heart hurts. Wow. I was so nervous to send my cat here because she was a rescue and never had any surgeries/vaccines so I wasn't sure how'd she'd be but they treated her so well. Even though I wasn't there I could tell by how fast she recovered, almost instantly. I applied for the low cost spay and got the service for free which I was very grateful for. The nurses were very helpful and answered any questions I had about the recovery process. My cat is doing well, very grateful. There is a bit of a wait for drop off maybe like 10 minutes and 5 minutes for pickup, but overall quick process read more

If I could give them 0/5stars, I would. I trusted them to have my dog spayed there and after 2 weeks of her being spayed, she ended up with an abscess inside her abdomen and was still bleeding as if she was in heat. After notifying PAWS via email, 3 days had passed and I decided to call them. I left a message and still hadn't heard from anyone. After taking my dog to the ER an abdominal ultrasound was conducted to find an abscess inside of my dog as well as the uterine stump still being intact. Surgery was mandatory and my dog had to have it removed. After spending thousands of dollars for the surgery to be conducted, I called PAWS a 4th time and someone actually answered. I was told that due to the management being out the door for the day, I was told they were informed of the situation and someone would get back to me. Once the surgery was completed, the surgeon discovered there was still ovarian and uterine tissue left behind (although this should've been removed during the spay) and because of that, it got infected and the abscess formed. I emailed all the documents invoices, post findings, tests, etc. no one reached out to me for a week. I had to contact them yet again. SO DISAPPOINTING from an organization I trusted with my pet. They denied that they were responsible for this happening to my dog. They took no responsibility for not removing all the tissue during her spay. I would NEVER recommend them to anyone that needs pet care. They stated my dog having pyometra was a "complication" after her spay and they weren't responsible. They even had the audacity to compare it to an oil change! How disgusting!! Not to mention there was no documentation or verbal communication regarding any complications prior to my dog being spayed. My dog endured two surgeries in 3 weeks because of an inexperienced surgeon that PAWS has spaying dogs. Luckily, my dog is back to being her normal self all thanks to the surgeon who saved her. read more

I made an appointment with a receptionist for my 8-month old yorkie poo to get neutered and a couple weeks later, I brought my pup in. I had to get there between 7:15a and 7:45a. That wasn't too bad since I could find parking on the street more easily at this time of day. The wait for my dog to get called up was about an hour and a half, but it was tolerable. The other people that I was waiting with made the time go by faster since we shared stories and talked about our pets. When I was called up and had time to speak with the vet, I told her that some of my dog's baby teeth were still in (about four of them). She said that it wasn't a problem to have those removed along with getting him neutered. It was an additional charge of $50. What a deal! After saying goodbye to my dog, I was told to come back at 4:30p the same day to pick up my dog. When I went back to the location, it took half an hour to get called up, but once they released him to me, he seemed to be his normal self, bursting with energy. I had been searching and searching for a reasonable and good place to take my 8 month old puppy to get neutered. I came across PAWS and after reading the great reviews I decided to take the chance. I made the appointment and even thou the appointment was a month away I didn't mind. I was advised to get there early, so I arrived around 7ish even thou they don't take dogs till 8am. I wanted to get there early as it might get packed. Once you arrive at the clinic you write your name on a list and add your phone number and they can call you once they are ready, so you can wait in the car! How awesome is that! You don't have to sit/stand there for an hour, you can let your dog nap/rest in the car. I was 3rd on the list and was in and out by 8:30am! At time of pickup they were on time and very efficient! They show you a quick 7min video and before they handed me my dog Erin spent the time to explain how my dog Cody was doing and how he might feel! Seriously the front desk, the doctors, the techs everyone was just AMAZING AND SUPER NICE!!! I felt comfortable leaving my dog there and would definitely recommend PAWS to other dog owners! So all the great reviews are correct!! Don't hesitant to make the appointment, everyone was wonderful!!! Even the price! I mean how reasonable can neutering be! I had the most fantastic experience getting my little buddy neutered here yesterday! First, I know a lot of people are complaining about them not picking up the phone but they respond to email really quickly! I started communication with them last week and by Sunday, we were in for his neutering appointment (due to a cancellation). We arrived at 6:35, per others' advice saying that lines get long, put our name in, waited in the car, and he was taken in a little after 7. The people that I spoke to were super friendly and knowledgeable! The best part is that I paid ~$265 to have him neutered, get a heartworm test, and get a shot, which is unheard of!! Other vet clinics had quoted me upwards of $900 just for the neutering procedure! My boy slept in the car on the way home and was good to go a little bit after. I've followed all the directions I got from the clinic completely and he is doing great today, only 24 hours after his procedure. I'm so glad I went with PAWS!! You guys are providing an incredible service to the community :) read more

I would recommend another paws location for spay and neutering. When I entered the facility with my very large German shepherd I was immediately told to go wait in my car and wait for a call. Since I arrived in Uber that clearly was not an option. It was clear the employees did not want to be there and made it known through attitude and side comments. So, this is my 200th review. I wanted it to be special. I decided to finally review Paws. I know it's going to be controversial. I'm sure people will be pissed off. All the makings for a 200th review if you ask me... I brought my pup here to be spayed. The whole wait process is excruciating. It reminds me of the wait at Cook County Hospital (shuddering at the thought). The staff was nice enough I suppose. Some random puppy was pooping all the floor. I sat with my pup huddled in the chair. I didn't want to touch ANYTHING. Too many people and too many dogs. Oh and the sign about no kids in the waiting area? ha! You can forget that. My favorite part was when a lady came to drop off her 6 cats. The whole waiting area smelled like cat urine. Anyway. I leave my pup and when I return to get her she's barely moving. So I pick her up and she yelps. Of course this freaked me and everyone else in the waiting area out. The worker has the nerve to tell me "Oh she's been our little drama queen today" This pissed me off to no end. How dare she blow off my dog's feelings? Maybe she was trying to tell you something lady!! (I'm getting upset just thinking about it...) Oh and I really hate the fact that they send the dog home with NOTHING but a cone on their head. No antibiotics...pain meds...NOTHING. So of course my pup doesn't get any better. I end up taking her to the vet and she has an infection and a fever. So I ended up spending the money anyway. After this whole ordeal I got to thinking... 1. Would I ever take my child to the free clinic? 2. Would I ever think it's okay for someone to perform same day surgery on someone I love and send them home with no meds? 3. Is it really worth it to treat something I love this way just to save some money? HELL NO. read more

Let me first preface with how much I appreciate what Paws Chicago is all about! I fully support their mission in our community and their success with decreasing the feral animal population. But please let me tell you about my 2 female Himalayan kittens i took to the Laurie Clinic to get spayed in the Spring of 2009. I had to take BOTH of my kitties back in for post- surgery follow up visit due to to complications from their surgeries. 1st- Hilo, sweet blue eyed smooshed face lovie, had a bad reaction to the surgical glue used to close the skin-incision. It became very infected and she was put on antibiotics which helped over a 2 week period. ok, sometimes these things happen was my thought process back then in April. Plus, I DO have sensitive pets. NOW GET READY FOR THIS: 2nd- Mika, the "big sister" blue eyed beauty, had surgery the same day as her sis Hilo. 2 MONTHS POST SURGERY I noticed a steel staple sticking out of her abdomen. I kidd you not. it was evident mika wasn't feeling well, and i immediately took her to Paws where they removed the string of steel wire they use on ALL FEMALE ANIMALS to stitch closed the " body wall" underneath the skin. The skin is then closed with surgical glue. I was sick to my stomach that my poor kitty was in such pain, and that the Paws clinic vet pulled out the string of surgical steel wire while my kitty was fully conscious. Mika was given no pain meds, but an antibiotic was given for infection. why, steel wire is used to close the incision, is a mystery to me when more technologically advanced tools are readily accessible! That steel wire is PERMANENTLY in their bellies, and could come unravelled at anytime during the pets lifespan. this is what happened to my Mika 2 months post surgery. Mika is recovering well, thank the lord. so here is the controversy, right? as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for" right? Well, NO!!! when it comes to medical care - affordable or not- Why is the the norm in an American Democratic society? I don't want to say the typical- " Next time I will learn my lesson and take my pets to a full priced Vet and not a low -cost clinic" I WANT to support and contribute to Paws Chicago, and other non-profit clinics in our community. We as collective consumers, pet lovers, and protective "pet parents" need to ensure that these valuable organizations are hiring competent surgeons and staff that aim to serve the community and our pets well! More accountability needs to be placed on these non-profits directors, to oversee their staff to serve the community with integrity and be held to the highest standard, comparable to any Veterinarian. I will continue to support Paws Chicago, and as a concerned community member, voice my concern in ensuring safe, comprehensive pet surgical practices are being proved to the public by Paws Chicago. Please just be aware that female spaying is more involved, has higher risks involved for complications than male neutering be sure to ASK QUESTIONS when you leave your precious pet in their hands. LEARN the stats, Find out WHO will be performing the surgery and let Paws staff and vet techs know that you want to be informed/involved in every step of the surgery process. I do not believe that Paws surgeons performed either of my 2 kitties surgeries properly. The complications involved were due to negligence and sloppy surgical procedures. the Lead Paws Clinic vet told me there is approx. 1 death in every 1500 pets from standard spay/ neuter surgeries and Paws performs 15,000 surgeries per year. however what she failed to explain was the rate of potential post surgery complications. We just got our new kitten Khaleesi spayed here. So far so good. The place is located in a little bit of a shady neighborhood, but it's cheap so I can't really complain much. If you are planning on coming here, be ready for an early 6:45 appointment. We showed up on time and there was only standing room. It didn't really help that some people seemed to have brought everyone in their immediate family and parts of their extended family as well. They should really have a 2 person max per animal. It really is excessive to bring more people than that to have your animal neutered. Plus the place is VERY small. The wait is long. We were there for 3 hours. To be fair they did warn us of this when we made our appointment so I can't hold it against them. You need to bring a carrier for your pet! They sell them here for $5 for a cardboard one, if you don't have one. There was a man here the time that I went that got annoyed because his cat was meowing in the carrier so he took her out and put her in his jacket. The cat ended up getting freaked out because of the other animals and started to claw at the man and move around his jacket so he was dancing around trying to get the pissed off cat out. It took him and his mother to get the cat out. All while the lady at the desk was screaming at him to put the cat back in the carrier! haha so funny. The vet was very nice and she was gentle with our cat even while Khaleesi was hissing and scratching at her, They make you watch a 20 min video when you pick your pet up and tell you if you have any problems to bring her home. Khaleesi seems to be healing just fine and is very happy. At this point we feel it went well and have no complaints. read more

Saying good-bye to the World's Greatest Dog... Through a series of events it became clear that the hubs and I were not providing the type of life that our pup deserved. We both recently took jobs that caused us to have longer commutes, which meant many long hours in the house and crate for our doggy. We tried supplement his days with doggie daycare, but ultimately we knew that this was just not the life that our pride and joy deserved. We made the difficult decision put our dog up for adoption. We naturally thought of PAWS. Having heard about all the amazing things that this organizations does, we thought this would be the best place to help us with our good boy. We set an appointment and had begun the emotional process of saying goodbye. PAWS did not make this process easy. The people at the facility were to put it plainly unsympathetic. I understand that most of the people who work there are dog lovers, but they clearly are not fans of people. We were never once assure that we were making the right decision for choosing the happiest of our dog over our selfish desires to keep him forever. While the experience sucked and the people at PAWS were totally not cool, we know that in the end everything will work out for the best. Our pooch will make some family extremely happy as he's made us. read more

Place can get pretty crowded so go as early as possible. staff was friendly, I love the fact that it was low cost spay/neuter and everything this place stands for. 2 days later and my 8 month old pitbull is acting like she was never even spayed. One Thing That Does Bother Me Though- is that they used metal stitches on the inside and apparently those STAY IN FOR LIFE. I don't know if I like that very much, I've tried to do a little research but there's not much on this topic, but people have said that the stitches can poke through the skin after a couple years and they'll need to get trimmed. UPDATE: after leaving my review I was promptly contacted by a member of PAWS and she assured me that the stitches will not cause her harm, and that on rare ocassions the stitches do poke out but it's just a matter of trimming them (which they will do for free) very happy that they took the time out of their very busy schedule to call me just to reassure me :). I do wish that they offered options like dissolvable stitches or regular stitches even if it meant an extra fee out of pocket. read more

Fantastic organization. Took my little black kitty here for a routine spay surgery, dropped her off early, picked her up later (albeit a more pissy kitty, doing just fine). The entire process was simple, the staff was helpful...organized, facility is clean. And you cannot beat the price: $25 (cats). It's literally hundreds less than the vet. We have been here twice. First to get our dog neutered and get his first round of puppy shots, and second today to get his last round of shots for the year, as well as an Avid microchip. For the two shots and Avid, it cost us $36! Amazing. If you are on any type of public assistance things are discounted, otherwise its a little more, not much though! Normally you would think that an animal would not be into being in a place like this. Like, they come in and just 'know.' Well, if our dog knew, he didnt mind. We had to wait about 2 hours when we brought him in for his neuter surgery, and about an hour to get his shots...but it was worth it for the price cut. And the people here are so friendly. One of the technicians assisting the vet who was doing his shots/Avid gave him "cookies" to distract him. He didn't feel a thing...he was eating cookies and couldn't be disturbed. Now...the Avid micro chop is inserted under the skin with a pretty hefty needle...he didn't even flinch. His neuter surgery went fine, and his shots and microchip insertion were flawless. I'm sure Ryno would give it a one star, being that he had his manhood surgically removed, but, from what I can tell, he wasn't really in any pain, except for the night he came home from PAWS. Everything was pain-free (except for my little man!), from waiting in the room to be called (which can be very long, so be sure to be there early to drop off and early to pick up!), purchasing Frontline and Heartguard at a discounted price, and staff was really understanding, and helpful! If I ever need to have another animal spayed/neutered, I'll be back at PAWS for sure! read more

Pros: The staff are truly animal lover. I felt comfortable leaving my 8month old cockatoo in their care. I did wait about an hour to be seen but it wasn't unbearable. Money is a bit right now and Paws has a great reputation. Cons: I had to wait an hr to be seen( if you are impatient don't bother ). Could get loud with some barking dogs. My dog was sent home with no pain meds and no antibiotics. Plan on losing a day due to drop off and pick up time. Internal metal suturing. I looked over reviews briefly know that paws had a good reputation. It was affordable and like I said above they were friendly and truly care about your pet. I had no questions leaving her there. Money being tight I wanted to be a responsible owner and get her spayed, but also keep her safe and happy. They also gave her some vaccinations she was due for and pulled a stubborn baby tooth. After picking her up they gave me no pain meds or antibiotics like the vet did with my older dog ( which I would have happily paid for ). When I asked about them the just said no and that I could see my regular vet if I wanted them. I also didn't know that they used internal metal suture and not dissolvable ones. That was my fault for not researching very deeply, but I had only heard wonderful things. Had I have known those two bits I would have chosen to take her to my vet. After 24 hrs my dogs has not urinated so I called my vet this am to has her checked out and to hopefully get her some pain meds to make her more comfortable. I will update. If you are low income or in a financial bind I would say to bring your pet here to them, just make sure you know all the facts. I love that Paws offer discount for people on public aide, and certain zip codes. For the comments below that say how unfair it is, they are selfish and cheap. The reason these neighborhoods have these discount is because of the amount of stray dogs and cats due to unwanted pregnancies. Paws is protecting the neighbors and the animals. read more

Made an appointment 5 months in advance for 8am on a Sunday. Came in, put our name down, waited over an hour, they then told us we have to pay BEFORE they even put us in line. No one ever mentioned this to us the 3 times we questioned our place in line. We again reiterated how we had an 8am appointment. The appointments mean nothing. After an hour+, they told us it would be at least ANOTHER hour before even being called back. So not worth it-gOing to pay the extra buck to go to an actual vet. Extremely disorganized and frustrating experience. read more
