The short review: my baby girl is now gone, and Oz Animal Hospital and MedVet did nothing to help her. Two weeks ago, I took my cat to Oz Animal Hospital to see Dr. Bruner for what I thought was an ear infection. Instead, I was told she had a "mass" with a secondary infection. A tissue sample was taken and sent to pathology. We were sent home with antibiotic ear drops intended for dogs (used off-label on my cat) and told we'd need to see a surgeon or dermatologist. The biopsy came back inconclusive because it was dead tissue. Meanwhile, those drops began affecting her inner ear almost immediately. Within three days, my sweet girl was losing her balance and acting completely unlike herself. I then went to MedVet Chicago to see Dr. Wyatt, hoping for urgent care. He examined her and admitted he wasn't sure there was even a mass, but his recommendation? A series of tests and surgery totaling $11,000. I stopped him and said, "No one has treated the infection. Can we please start there?" I requested a bacterial culture and an antibiotic injection. He took the culture but refused the injection, saying systemic antibiotics aren't typically effective for ear infections and that topical treatment would be better. He said that he would call with results. Two days later, he called with preliminary results and said he'd call again five days later (after Labor Day) with the full report and a treatment plan to get us started while we waited to get into a dermatologist elsewhere (earliest was October 8). I asked again for an antibiotic injection, and again, I was told to wait. Meanwhile, my cat was declining rapidly. When her condition worsened, I called Oz Animal Hospital sobbing for help. None of their three locations could see her. I asked if she could at least get an antibiotic injection, and they told me to contact MedVet. So between two supposedly reputable veterinary providers, I was told to wait, to go elsewhere, and to do nothing while my baby's life slipped away. Yesterday, she passed away in my arms. And it didn't have to happen. What did I learn? That Oz Animal Hospital and MedVet Chicago failed my cat at every step. No urgency. No compassion. No basic care. Just expensive recommendations and passing the responsibility back and forth. If you value your pet's life, please do not trust these clinics. Ask hard questions. Demand action. Don't assume these people will do what's right for your pet. They didn't for mine.

    On our way home.

Huge thank you to the team at Medvet. My senior pup was suffering from pneumonia aspiration and was rushed to medvet from our vet as she was not breathing well without oxygen support. My poor girl barely made the 15min drive as she was struggling to breathe. Upon arriving the team was quick to respond and also provided a special waiting room and social worker to make sure i was also being supported in this extremely emotional and stressful process. Doctors were compassionate and thorough through her whole 2 day stay in ICU. They were communicative in every step and made sure i felt confident in all the next steps of her treatment without making me feel like i was being pressured or taken advantage of financially in such a traumatic time. After 2 days in ICU, my tough girl pulled through and was able to come home to rest and recover. I truly believe they did everything to bring her home to me and genuinely care about their patients as well as their owners. They created a safe place to feel and stay positive while also being realistic and leading with empathy. Additionally, facilities were clean and professional just as any human hospital should be. My babygirl is now on the road to a speedy recovery. Thank you to the team at Medvet for saving my best friend.

This review is exclusively for the end-of-life services that we utilized at MedVet on California Ave. We did not utilize any other veterinary or specialty services. We were also not previously a customer here. We knew that the time had come for our beautiful 16-year-old pit mix, Odie, to cross the Rainbow Bridge just a few days ago. When we woke up in the morning, it was very obvious that this was going to be her last day. She was struggling and suffering so much that we reached out to our local neighborhood Facebook group for recommendations of where to take her. We were recommended MedVet multiple times. Our family is glad that we chose this particular practice. First of all, if you, like us, find yourself in need of end-of-life services for your pet, I highly recommend this location. The room that they will take you to is NOT an exam room. It has a couch and a couple chairs. There is enough space for your whole family to be there. It is roughly a 12x14 room They have plenty of tissue boxes as well. They did not limit how many people we had in the room for the euthanization. For the record, there were 4 of us. We asked them if there was a limit for how many people could be in the room and they said absolutely not. They were so kind to us. So respectful in the way that they spoke to us. It was about $450 to put our 80 lb dog to sleep, receive her remains afterwards, along with a memorial footprint in clay. That cost was so much lower than the five other places that we reached out to. Not to mention our attempt to have it done at home, which the bare minimum for that would have been $750. The room is clean, roomy and comfortable. They will provide you a blanket to lay on the floor if you do not bring something for yourself. They absolutely allow you to bring your pet's blankets or your pet's bed with you if you would like and there is plenty of room in there to lay that down. The vet came in and asked our permission for every. single. thing. she did. Asking us if we were ready, before each individual step that she did. We did not feel rushed in any way. After the euthanasia, there is a doorbell on the wall inside the room that you can push when your family is ready for your pet to be taken out of the room. They give you the option to watch your pet be placed on the gurney and removed from the room, or you can elect to leave your pet with the vet tech and your family can leave the room before that happens. It's 100% based on what works best for your family. But there is no rush. You are welcome to have locks of hair cut by the vet tech and given to you in a keepsake bag for no extra charge. They created three separate keepsake bags for us and we were not charged anything for that. All you have to do is ask. They were absolutely wonderful to us. We could not have asked for better. The staff was kind, quiet, calm, respectful and accommodating. We just wanted to let others know, if you are looking for end-of-life services for your pet, this location would be a wonderful choice, especially if you cannot afford the incredibly expensive in-home euthanization. Thank you MedVet Chicago. You made a very heartbreaking situation more bearable. We appreciate you!!

I had to bring in my Meowth, who was 12 years old with chronic kidney disease that was diagnosed a couple of years ago. He lost a bunch of weight and didn't really eat well for a few days. I naively thought that he didn't like the wet food I bought so I purchased another brand to see if he would eat. Little did I know that I was too late to save his life. He was admitted to the hospital at 10pm ish on a Monday evening and we were there until 3am the next day. We were assigned a room and the assistant performed the intake immediately. After that, the wait was long; hence, I had to deduct one star for this review. Nevertheless, once it was our turn, the vet on duty told us the blood work was necessary and then we were just patiently waiting for the results and were wondering how Meowth was doing. Everyone was compassionate and kind. The lobby had coffee, tea, and vending machines selling snacks and pops. It turned out that Meowth had to be on a watch for another day and would be receiving the rehydration treatment and ultrasound. I knew some bills definitely would need to be paid. The good thing was an itemized bill would always be provided for me to review, so I understood what each treatment or medicine cost. Doctor Pratt spoke to me on the phone in the afternoon and patiently explained the results from the ultrasound. As I guessed, they didn't look promising. Doctor Pratt answered all my questions and it helped make the decision for Meowth. We picked up Meowth after work. Medicine and discharge instructions were given. In addition, resources for euthanasia were handed to me. Unfortunately, I ended up choosing in-home euthanasia for Meowth the following day so that the entire family, including his feline bonding mate, Persian, could witness and perhaps have some closure. I didn't know Meowth developed an aggressive form of carcinoma in a such short amount of time. Doctor Pratt informed me the affected area and told me the life expectancy after chemotherapy if I were to elect that route. I really appreciated her honesty. At least I gained clarity on Meowth's conditions and I wanted to do what was best for him. I know this is an unusual review with lack of happiness. In the end, I am beyond grateful for the 24-hour service that "Premier Veterinary Group" offers. I still have the other cat with me and I do hope that things will be less tragic when it comes to health emergency on a pet. However, I will not hesitate to visit here again for any concern about my cat, especially when an appointment with my regular vet office is unavailable.

Premier had the best availability, was close to home, and came highly recommended by friends. I'm not going to lie, specialists and emergency vets aren't cheap. We first saw a specialist who said there was a 50/50 chance we could remove the carcinoma. If we good, Mel had years ahead of them. If they couldn't, it was more like months. When I dropped Mel off, the veterinary assistant collected my info and asked if he could have a photoshoot. As expected Mel charmed the pants off everyone and his photoshoot was more than I could've imagined. Unfortunately, the surgery revealed that his cancer was advanced and everywhere. When we took him home, they noted all of the ways he tried to con them into removing his cone and truly seemed enamored with him. Over the holidays, we knew the end was close and had scheduled an at home euthanasia for New Year's Day. Unfortunately Mel's little body had other plans. He started crashing NYE morning, so we called them to tell them we were coming. They started an IV and let me hold him in my arms while we said goodbye. They gave us options as to how present we wanted to be during the process and never once rushed us. They didn't bat an eye when I came in disheveled and crying. A few days later they called to check on us and sent a sympathy card. Losing a pet is like losing a family member. I'm grateful they did all they good to make it as stress free as possible.

Looking back, it felt like a money machine. They ran a bunch of tests, including some that our regular vet later said were absolutely unnecessary. After all that, they still couldn't tell us what was wrong. What they could do was recommend leaving him overnight on oxygen for around $2.5k per night. Ridiculous! Of course I said no because he was already much better. We left with a $1.7k bill and no diagnosis, only guesses. They also referred us to a specialist, where we spent another $1k on tests only to be told that our dog was fine. Fast forward to recently. My dog has colitis and occasionally has flare-ups. He developed diarrhea and, unlike previous episodes, stopped drinking water. Our regular vet got us in the next morning, but I was worried about dehydration overnight, so I called this clinic because it was late in the evening. I specifically asked whether they could evaluate him and give him fluids to help get him through the night until his appointment. I explained that he already has a known history of colitis and that we already had a plan with our regular vet. Women on the phone was very rude and basically told me that none of that mattered. I was told they require a standard list of diagnostic tests no matter what, and then the veterinarian could decide if even more tests were needed. When I asked if we could skip the full workup and just provide supportive treatment, I was told no, that's their policy. So instead I went to another emergency clinic in Buffalo Grove. They gave him fluids, got him hydrated, and sent us on our way to follow up with our regular vet the next day. No endless testing, no pressure, no trying to turn a straightforward situation into a several thousand dollar visit. Based on my experiences, this place seems far more interested in selling diagnostics than providing practical care. Stop giving your money to this clinic, they don't care about you or your pet, they only care about your money!

I called ahead of time to check on pricing for the exam, etc., and one of the Vets answered and was so kind and patient while I explained what was going on. When I got there, I was met with the warmest, kind, helpful energy from every single person who worked there. From the person who did our intake, to the techs who did her initial vitals and administered her IV later on, (and cleaned up her mess on the way out - TY) to the Vet herself, I felt more than comfortable that they had my girls best interest in mind but were also realistic with what I could spend and how far we wanted to go with her care considering that she's 15.5 years old. After the vet examined her, I was sent a quote via email I could approve via my phone, and while I paid cash, they have an instant link you can pay for your services via credit card through email as well, which I found amazingly efficient and made what I was spending and what was included crystal clear so there was no anxiety about hidden costs. (I also found this place to be INCREDIBLY reasonable in their pricing compared to the other Vets I've gone to in the city). Special shoutout to the tech with the amazing mustache and the woman who administered her IV.... He was down on the floor, with my pup's head in his lap, petting her and saying the sweetest, most reassuring things while the other tech also just gave her such praise that we got some little exhausted tail wags out of her during what couldn't have been a comfortable process. It was several months ago that I went at 11pm on a Wednesday night with my 15 year old Dory. I went…read morethinking she was not going to make it through the night. After developing years with a vet I trust, I was so scared what my experience would be at an emergency clinic I didn't know. Dr. William Fischbach and the rest of the team were all so wonderful. They all took such care, giving me empathy, patience, and humor when I needed. He even called his wife for her thoughts as she knows cats better. We had several more good weeks after that night. I would recommend to anyone. Thank you!

So my interactions with this place were years ago but it is important to pay it forward as someone…read moredid for me. This location also housed an exotic animal hospital and I loved one of the doctors with that place that has moved to a separate location. Every animal who was brought into this place has died. I understand these vets are not GOD and we are bringing in our beloved animals who are sick or ill and there may be nothing the vets could do HOWEVER..... I had a hamster I paid $5000 to remove I thought permanently, or so I thought it was permanent, a malocclusion or tooth that grew straight backwards into the poor creature's skull and out its face. Nope, grew back worse than before and that poor thing died horribly. That said I am attaching my review for the Northfield location because I found a Yelp review helpful when desperate to save my dog. I feel about the same at this point with this location. So here it is: Ummm so.... I found Rockford Animal Hospital from right here on Yelp . This BluePearl is part of a Corporate thing that is only interested in money. I guess it is the NorthShore and we need to justify a big salary and high real estate for this place but yeah.... This is involving a creature who is part of your family.... The staff was very cold and sorry that quote was insane. I have also been to the BluePearl in Skokie. If you find yourself in a financial pickle and you can drive to these locations, obviously NOT an option in some emergency situations.....BUT if you can, check out these places: they are worth the trip. I have a dog who had a tick and ended up with an autoimmune situation. $3500 paid to BluePearl here for just an antibiotic but quoted $13,000 for antibiotics, testing a a few days stay which I could NOT afford at that time and we went on our way. 1. Bowes Animal Hospital in Elgin just did dentistry on my poor baby when no one else would take her. They were affordable, competent, transparent, compassionate and made me feel at ease. 22 extractions and she is doing great! This is a 3 doctor place that is independently owned and operated. Delightful doctors, techs and office staff. They are wonderful!!! 2 hour drive 1 way. We will be driving back there next year for an annual checkup. 2. Premier Animal Emergency Hospital Ethos on Belmont in Chicago. This has been her "regular vet" since they have an internal medicine specialist since no one nearby seems knowledgeable about what her autoimmune situation is all about. Testing is much more affordable, kind and compassionate staff. I completely forgot this place did a crazy complicated surgery on my old JRT a decade and a half ago on his broken leg and involved 63 pins... My beloved dog literally ran full tilt on that leg until the day he died. 3. Rockford Emergency Animal Hospital in Rockford Illinois. My baby spent multiple nights over the course of a month when all of this started a few years ago to figure out what to do to help her. This is a 3 hour drive for me 1 way. Just to be clear, all of those visits and extended time staying many overnights with someone monitoring her extremely high fever, continuous IV, an entire panel of bloodwork antibiotic protocol and when that didn't work we went to steroids. This whole thing was a fraction of the $13,000 BluePearl quoted for just the little start. Even if you tag on the $1000 in missed tolls and hotel stay because I was in such duress driving hours back and forth in desperation to keep this sweet creature alive I think I might have gone a little over $5000. $13,000 would have wiped me out beyond imagination and would have ended up being a death sentence. All the visits to the 3 above places IN TOTAL over a few years has now have come to that $13,000 mark quoted way back and my dog is stable and thriving.
