This was our second visit to Velchoff's. We loved the fries last time so we had to come back to try their other menu items. We got hungry after running errands so went out for dinner this Thursday around 6pm, parked on the street (free parking), and seated immediately by a friendly hostess. We chose to eat indoors since it was hot out (90's) so we sat at table 1 for the high top seats to accommodate my husband's height. There were around 5 other tables occupied and the rest of the dining area was empty. Our server was Boo and she had a delightfully bubbly personality, letting us know the specials and local origins of the food. We ordered Coke no ice, ginger ale no ice, cajun fries no bacon, well-done Swamp Burger, buffalo chicken bites, and a mahi mahi fish basket. My husband decided to use their restroom, which interestingly enough, are located outside around the corner of the building. I'm guessing this was done so the chefs in the cooking area (in the food truck) could use them easily. Our drinks arrived in minutes and appetizer (cajun fries) arrived around 10 minutes later. The rest of the food was brought out about 10 more minutes after that. The entire order was correct and made very well. Cajun fries were crispy with gooey cheese sauce and cajun spices. Fish basket was tasty and not fishy at all (yay!). My husband said his burger was good and not oily. All in all, cost was about $95 with a generous tip. We would come back for another date here, hopefully with Boo as our server again :) read more

The service here was good as well as the drink and food options. We started with oysters. We had a dozen raw, a dozen palf a dozen garlic butter. All were delicious. I ordered the Ribeye steak, side salad, collards and dirty rice. The two drier sides came in separate containers but the collars came on the plate with the steak. The steak was cooked past my request and was sitting in a bath of collard juices. My biggest turn off were the flies. I do not enjoy swatting flies while trying to enjoy dinner. May try again in the winter or if they get the fly situation under control. read more

Susan and I stopped at Velchoff's Corner after a boat ride on the St. Johns River, and this place continues to impress us every time. It is a permanently placed food truck with patio and indoor seating, and everything about it feels intentional and welcoming. The food is outstanding. The Cracker Swamp Burger is hands down the best burger I have ever had and earned our Best of the Best award. Susan loves the shrimp and grits, and the fried chicken gumbo and shrimp buffalo bites were excellent. Quality is top shelf across the board. We were so hungry when we found a place to eat and jumped the gun a but. But we were all happy after our first bites and it definitely needs to be reviewed. This cute little place right near the river has it all! Food--10/10. We tried a little bit of everything here. A French dip for my sister, and my mother, son and myself hit all the baskets (fish, chicken and shrimp respectively). The French dip was delicious and the au jus was liquid gold. The fried dishes were perfectly breaded and fried. Not overly breaded, just enough for a little crunch and flavor and didn't take away from the main attraction at all. Their "the best fries" really live up to their name. I was surprised to enjoy them so much and the comeback slaw will DEFINITELY have me coming back. Service--10/10. Our server was cheerful, fun, and personable. She was a delight and welcoming to everyone, even those not at her tables. Atmosphere--10/10. Even though our visit was in December, it was beautiful and thankfully a nice enough day we could sit outside. Just ate here - it was great, the kitchen is actually in a food truck but there is a large, cozy dining room and a beautiful patio with a great view of the St John's. Great friendly service. Our server, Zach, made our time delightful. From point A to point B, he was the best. It was even his first day serving, but he knew how to do it right! The food is incredible. Had lunch at Velchoff's during a recent visit to Florida. Very good lunch. The food was yummy, the service very attentive and the decor in the old brick building was great. The ambiance was the first thing that got my attention. Upon arrival the look and feel of the place was so welcoming. Outdoor seating on a beautiful day with an awesome guitar player and a seating area filled with unpretentious beautiful plants. The food comes out of a big food truck and don't let that disappoint or discourage you because the food was very good. The staff were so friendly as if you were one of their regular patrons. Well we will be for sure! The park was only step away & beautiful right on the St. John's river. The only downside was that we wished the coffee shop was opened next door to Velchoff's & the shops too on the very small Main Street were closed or non existent. Palatka is an up and coming and Velchoff's Corner is the rising shining star. We will return. Oh& the fries are delicious! And the waitress from New York made you feel as if you had been going there for years and it was our first visit but not our last for sure. read more

I've passed by this quaint place and this time I stopped in. Was greeted by super friendly staff that loved where they worked and what they did. Had the Blackened Mahi sandwich and it was hands down the best one I've ever had. Fresh caught, thick and moist without too much tartar sauce trying to mask anything. Crab spinach dip very tiny portion overwhelmed with the topping and fried crackers, ordered as an appetizer and arrived after the main course came out. Out west today for work, we made our way into the coolest place in Palatka called Velchoff's Corner They have indoor seating but also a really cool outdoor space! They cook out of the food truck and pump out some seriously good stuff! We shared a burger topped with pimento cheese and a fried green tomato, cooked perfectly with these amazingly seasoned scratch made fries And this chicken sandwich with slaw, come back sauce and pickles, with a side of the most amazing, creamy cheesy grits! First off Velchoff's is a wonderful place to dine outside. So beautiful and a nice view of the river. The food was excellent, a little pricey but worth it. Wow, what a great find! Housed in a historic building, this charming restaurant serves up really comforting and well-prepared southern fare. My blue crab and corn chowder was an easy 10/10. My friend's daughter enjoyed her chicken gumbo. My friend's whole fried branzino looked very appetizing and tasted wonderful, she said. We were all impressed with the quality and quantity of dishes that came out. Service was friendly and helpful. They had plentiful seating indoors and outdoors. I think the bar scene could be fun based on the looks of their setup. During the day, this restaurant works for families and people on day dates alike. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are exploring Palatka or coming back from the spectacular Ravines Garden State Park (also recommend). I have read and heard that north Florida feels more southern culturally than its southern portion, and this restaurant definitely provides beautifully prepared dishes representative of or inspired by southern cuisine. read more

About once a month, we make the trip from Tampa to Saint Augustine to see our grandchildren. While, there's a direct route on the interstates, tend to avoid that because it takes us through Orlando, which is hell on earth. Alternatively, we take a route on I 75 to go north of Ocala and then start taking the back roads to Saint Augustine, which brings you through beautiful scenery, as well as many little towns. A couple of months ago we stopped in Palatka and had a Sunday brunch at this restaurant. It was their first or second Sunday brunch so they were working out some kinks and still very delicious. I may have even reviewed it back then. So today we're on our regular journey to Saint Augustine and decided to stop in again and try their regular menu. We were not disappointed. It took us quite a while to figure out what we were gonna have. Joannie chose their burger of the day, which was a two patty smash burgerwith caramelized onions with a dat cream sauce on Texas toast with a side of their comeback slaw. Let me start off by saying I don't want to offend the locals, but someone please tell me how Palatka, FL has been blessed with this gem of a restaurant. After eating at some other local places my hotel recommended, I decided to walk across the grass to try Velchoff's. I asked about a bar, and they directed me past the food truck (which I thought was cooking for the outdoor tables). I walked in, was immediately greeted and took at seat at the bar. The ambiance was that of a speakeasy, and there were many choices for drinks. I ordered the blackened mahi and shrimp, and let em tell you, I live in Savannah now, and there is not one restaurant there who can touch what I ate tonight...none! I've live in Europe for 9 years, and all over the U.S., and this simple meal ranks easily in the top 10 I've ever had. The food is fresh, locally sourced, some grown on site. The flavors are balanced and complimentary to each other; just all around composed well! I ended with the bourbon glazed bread pudding with an old fashioned. One of the best bread puddings I've had. I may not have to come to Palatka again for work, but I will definitely exit 95 to swing through and eat here in the future. Oh, and I forgot to mention, the food truck...yeah, all of the food is cooked in it....RIDICULOUS!!! This place is slaying it! read more

Somebody ought to put our waiter in a corner; that smug bastage!!! I would have walked right the @#$% out of there if it weren't for others in our party. They don't deserve the business with waitstaff like that. Otherwise, food's something like a solid three or more, I guess; I just didn't see it is all. Not after the offending service. For me, the place impresses better than it is. Foods not thrilling, but nice. Everybody seemed to enjoy it enough. Cracker Swamp burger was good. So was the corn chowder. My drink was very delayed in coming out, but that was probably the waiter punishing me. No follow up service, water refills, etc. unless we chased them down. One of the bar backs was caught gawking at us and later strafed by the table unnecessarily brushing his arm overtop my teenage daughter's head. Awkward creep. It's sort of a scattershot of a business. Restaurant, coffee house, oyster bar, etc. In all my travels, I've never seen a food truck servicing a brick and mortar restaurant before; but yeah, the kitchen's a food truck. Don't go here. My wife's food was brought out before mine. She took her time and 15 minutes after she finished they still had not brought out my salad with blackened mahi. It's not like this was fresh off the dock mahi either. This stuff comes frozen and was the only fish they offered so on everything from fish dinners to fish sandwiches to fish salad so should have been an easy and quick fish to prepare. I had to retrieve the manager since we had not seen our waitress in forever. Told him just to bring me my check. He apologized for the miscommunication in "two separate kitchens" they have. Apology from the manager, but this was horrendous service. He should have comped my wife's meal and the warm ice tea with no ice. When the manager came out with the check, I pointed out two other customers who sat down after us and both had salads with fish or chicken (couldn't quite tell and didn't really care at that point). He just apologized again with no explanation. I will never be back to this place. Terrible service and terrible management. Go somewhere else for your meal! read more

We were down in Palatka so decided to check out this place. Very cool vibe, nice courtyard area with seats and live music. We sat inside and it was divided into 2 sections. The restrooms we're located outside and around the building which wasn't convenient. The pimento cheese was excellent and so were the oysters. The steak was not cooked too my liking. I asked for medium but it was very raw. I asked for them to throw it back on the grill for a little longer but still just wasn't a great cut of meat. My friend liked the shrimp and grits. The ambiance inside was boring, they need to revamp the inside of the space. read more
