Fantastic guacamole trio and chips (mango, traditional, and pineapple)
Anne S.

Wow were we impressed by how upscale this place was. I picked a restaurant walking distance from downtown to eat at while seeing the holiday lights (techincally this was walking distance, but in the dark and cold my 6 year old was unimpressed by the walk). Inside is lovely, and there was live music on Saturday evening. We felt comfortable being there with a kid, but it also looked like a few tables were out for a date night. The music was a little loud, so we chose to sit in the back where it was fine. It was really cold though. The food was delicous. Started with complimentary potatoe flautas, which were fine. (They had sour cream on them which I hate. I wiped it off, but who knows how much more I would have liked them without it.) -Guacomole trio with traditional, pineapple, and mango guacomole's. All of them were great, but the pineapple was trully outstaning. I plan to return here because of how amazing the pineapple guacomole was. -Vegetarian fajitas with flour tortillas (no sour cream) and they were great, with a side of coconut rice which was just okay to me. -Kids quesadilla with Mexican rice, great expect that it had sour cream and crumbled cheese on top. This is great for fancy adults, but picky kids it's easier if they know exactly what to expect. Mexican rice was great. --Mojito was fantastic. Great service! Delicious food, and lovely space! Kid and baby friendly- They have a kids meal, high chairs and booster seats, and while they don't have a changing pad the bathrooms are both clean, large, single user spaces with good enough floor space for someone to lay out a changing mat.

The margarita menu was very confusing to start. I asked for a shot of grand Marnier to add to my margarita and the server gave me grab gala instead. When I said I'm sorry I wanted grand Marnier she said that goes in the Cadillac margarita and I ordered the ultra premium. I was confused bc I ordered the shot separately so that shouldn't have mattered. The lime sour is not home made it's from a bottle so it wasn't good made the margarita super average. This restaurant doesn't give complimentary chips and salsa like every other Mexican restaurant. Paid for chips and queso and for a 3 oz side of salsa was $3. Way overpriced. We got one margarita and a side of cups and queso and our bill was $55!!!

The food was good but pricey for portion size. The pictures online do not compare to what I got. The calamari was the circumference of a quarter and some were the size of a dime. The calamari were the smallest I have ever had. The steak pieces were small but fat free.

I saw pics of this place come across my Facebook feed and I've been waiting to try. We ended up having to be in Valparaiso and , so we stopped around 4 PM Before the dinner rush. The prices are higher but it's so worth the elevated ingredients and the food was just worth it. The Barbacoa tacos were the best and meatiest I've ever had. They bring out some complimentary flautas instead of chips. The house margaritas were on special that evening and very fresh and delicious! The coconut rice. Omg the COCONUT RICE! So amazing! The service was on point and now we were informed that they are opening another location with tequila bar in Merrillville! We are going to be back. Kudos to the chef!

The chips with the micro amount of salsa and the $5 bowl of salsa they charged us for.

My friend and I decided to try a new place, and needless to say we were both very disappointed, wont be returning, and definitely would not recommend this to our friends. Luckily we were starving and wanted to try a new place other than our regular spots. [[HIGHLIGHT]]First, they made us sit outside, luckily it was warm when we arrived but we left as soon as we paid bc it was getting windy and we were cold. But the moral is we weren't even asked if we wanted to sit inside and there was no one inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ordered the chips and salsa, look at the pic. The ratio is WAY OFF. Needless to say we asked for more salsa and it was $5 extra. On top of that, the "fresh housemade" chips must have been made last week and left out bc they were chewy. I got the lobster burrito which was $27, not worth it, and small. So for a Dr.pepper, chips and salsa, and a burrito, I paid $41. I'm not sure how this place stays in business or how it has 4.2 stars, but like I said I won't be back, and I'd recommend going to just about any other one of the great Mexican places there are in valpo.

Lobster benedict

We had an outstanding brunch, 13 people and had impeccable service. I had the lobster benedict, loaded with lobster! The atmosphere was great for families, live music was so classy and made the birthday brunch extra special and memorable.

We were driving back home and would enter new buffalo in about an hour, according to Maps. Hit a snag with road construction, looked like we would arrive about twenty minutes after my reservation time, called the restaurant to see if i could update my reservation and was told if i arrived more than fifteen minutes past my time, they would " try to accommodate " me. Well imagine my surprise when we arrived ten minutes past and there were at least six empty tables inside and more outside? Why not change my reservation then? We were greeted promptly by our friendly snd animated server who helped us with a description of the concept and the menu items, and some very strange looking water glasses. We both ordered the chicken skewer with mango chutney. Chicken skewer was fine but just a tiny dish of chutney. I did ask for and received more. (Still more empty tables, btw). The breaded fries came in a large shareable bowl for $10. Left somewhat disappointed by the stress of the reservation issue and somewhat overpriced menu items. Still better than other restaurant choices we have had there.

Made last minute reservations for brunch next day after the infamous architecture tour. It was quiet as we've put in an early morning. All the more better to savor all intricate dishes from start to finish. Like the name, The Purple Pig, their specialty is pork dishes so majority of our orders were this. Daily special of the bone marrow bacon jam toast - glazed, slippery off the bone, savory and sweet. Always love a good bone marrow dish to get the sweetness off it. This was so good that there were bits of the marrow and jam left stuck to the bone, I took a piece of the toast and scooped the bone dry. Nothing left for anyone to attack this. Non pork dishes were the Mushroom 3 ways and Spanish octopus. Mushroom dish was savory with all the coated sauces elevating this. Spanish octopus was kicked lightly and easily can bite in to enjoy the tender and charred portions. But the award went to my main course - the braised pork shoulder with saffron, apricots and Swiss chard. Aside from the rippable pork meat when dining on it, the sauces fused together on this dish elevated it and had everyone coming back for more. I needed an official Chicago culinary experience and found it at The Purple Pig without a doubt.

We ordered a flight of whiskey sours, which contained whiskeys from Japan, Vietnam, and Wisconsin. I also was able to order an amaretto sour, which they made with freshly hand beaten egg whites, which was a nice cherry on the top. As far as the whiskey flights go, I think the best one was the Vietnam flight because it had a slightly lemongrass twang and was a little bit lighter than the other two. The heaviest one was the Wisconsin which came with a little bit of a bite at the end, but it still wasn't bad if you're trying to blackout on a $15 budget. I would definitely come back with a larger group this seems like a great place, but is a little bit loud- so if you be prepared to yell or wear earplugs. The bathroom took my a second to find, which should have been intuitive considering it was on the opposite end of where you come in. I blame the lighting as things are already pretty hard to find in the dark, but eventually I made it there-Pat myself on the back.

The patatas bravas were flavorful. The garlic shrimp was cooked perfectly. The fried calamari was the only dish that missed the mark for us, as it was a bit too greasy. The highlight of the meal was the seafood paella. Both the shrimp and scallops were cooked perfectly, but what really impressed us was the rice. Paella can be difficult to get right, and the rice had excellent texture and flavor, making the dish a pleasure to eat. We ended with the butterscotch custard which was perfect and the almond caramel bar. After several disappointing dining experiences during our short trip to Chicago, Café Ba-Ba-Reeba finally delivered a meal that left us satisfied. The service was great.
