Do you like unique cocktails and a cozy atmosphere while enjoying the low key vibe of downtown Bend? Apparently that's what does it for me too. Went on the recommendation to Velvet one night after dinner and half expected plush seats with a baller atmosphere. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to find a cabin-esque tavern with a hip edge and crafty concoctions behind the bar. Shawn, our super attentive bartender, crafted us a sweet (but not too sweet!) blueberry cocktail with quite the edge. Please note these were FRESH blueberries that were bouncing from our glasses passed our lips into our mouths. Quite the delish treat and surprisingly neutral flavor. Velvet is an interesting little bar downtown where your experience can differ wildly from visit to visit. I mean this is two ways specifically. In one way, it's a matter of what time you go and whether they have live music. In either case, the experience is quite good, just different. In the other way, Velvet can be a hit-or-miss experience with service, unfortunately. If you're visiting Velvet at dinnertime, expect a casual relaxing time. The tatoo'd bartender dude is great, talented and friendly. If you're in here when it's packed, it's also usually a good experience, with great music and good vibes from all the patrons. It'll be a much younger crowd when the musics beating too. Either way, I dig their newish food menu and they have some of the most unique (and sometimes comical) drinks in town, including 40's of PBR, (with or without paper bag), giant fishbowls of booze, and lots of awesome infusions and specialty cocktails. Unfortunately, there has been a time when we've walked out after waiting for service. We meet waitress...upstairs is full and she directs us downstairs...we grab a booth downstairs...and we wait until we get pissed and walk out. Not busy or anything, just bad service. On other occasions, we've had shotty table service as well, mostly when downstairs and when it's pretty dead, just the bartender and our confounded waitress. read more

Velvet is awesome. It's classy, relaxed and friendly with great drinks and excellent service. I hadn't been there in awhile, but stopped in on Friday evening after a grueling week at work. Vaughn is the best bartender. He makes delicious drinks and is very kind. He takes care to make sure you feel welcome and have a pleasant time. I highly recommend this establishment for their consistently excellent staff, their delicious recipes and the warm, local ambiance. read more

Adorable set up and very comfy! I was excited to try the food after having a lengthy conversation with the bartender over which happy hour item I should try. We settled on the warmed Brie and I ordered another bourbon to sip and enjoy with the snack. 45 minutes (and the end of happy hour)passed before I eventually return to the bar and inquire about the food.... As you guessed it, it was forgotten. Rookie move, especially after and conversation was had where pros and cons were discussed about several dishes. I would understand placing the wrong order but forgetting altogether was a big disappointment. The bar supervisor/manager was standing there when the mistake was discovered and claimed to take "a few bucks" off my bill as an apology but when I got the tab it was only totaled- not itemized. I was shocked at the tab. Let's just say I order the same bourbon everywhere I go. Either she gave me less than $2 off or I was robbed from the get go because those would have been the most expensive buffalo trace shots I've ever had (aside from the airport) From a bar managers perspective, comping my last drink- the drink I ordered to accompany the food- would have been the best way to make up for the 45 minute wait that ended in disappointment. I understand mistakes happen. That's just the only reason I can't give it 4 stars- never got to try the food and the recovery for it was half assed. My friends and I came here on a slow Tuesday night to hang out and grab a couple drinks. Upon arriving, we were greeted by the bartender who tells us she's new. That's all fine and dandy. We all (4 of us) order our drinks and sit down. 3/4 of the drinks were fine, but one was just horrible. My friend (being too nice to say anything) tries to drink the bad drink and simply cannot get it down. The other 3 of us try the drink and all agree that it's pretty bad. My friend goes back to the bartender and tells her that the drink is bad and was hoping to get a replacement. My friend is then charged for a second drink, even though her first one wasn't drinkable. I then take it into my hands to go to the other bartender and tell him the situation. I explain that the first drink was bad and she was hoping to get her second replaced for free, but she didn't, so she was hoping to get the third one for free. Either the bartender didn't understand me or he simply did not care, and the charges my friend for a third drink. So now my friend has paid $25+tip for 2 okay drinks and 1 that was so bad she couldn't drink it. In any other situation I've been in, if I (or anyone I was with) was served something that wasn't good, we were given a replacement for free. But apparently that's not how they roll at Velvet. Probably wouldn't be writing this if we had been treated with any respect or just simply got an apology; but the first bartender scoffed at my friend the first time she brought up her drink and the second bartender didn't even say anything besides "so you want me to throw this out". The rest of the drinks were fine but nothing special. The place was also very dirty, definitely not going back. read more

Such a lovely gem to find. You can easily just pass by it walking. But that would be a mistake. Providing both a great variety of craft beer and cocktails, they also serve a delish small bites menu to boot. They make their own "ginger beer". This is a sweet little bar with a cool decor, and they have ski and snowboard videos playing on loop on a flat screen. I'm not big on mixed drinks, so I can't say how their mixes are, but the beer selections are good but modest, as are the wines, and they have enough to keep you happy and hanging out for quite a while. For small plates, it's not particularly special or imaginitive, but it's decent. If you want some good local happy hour beer and tasty snacks for not a lot of money, this is a good choice for you. There are plenty of more expensive places in the neighborhood if that's your thing, but we had a nice time here. read more

It's just.... ok. service goes up and down at this Bar quite frequently. I feel like if I'm not a snowboarder I shouldn't be there. It has a very clicky dushbag atmosphere. We perched on 2 high seats at the nifty little bar in the upstairs/loft-y area and were treated to attentive (but not hovering) service. The drinks were bright & fresh, and beautiful to behold-- featuring fruits, fruit juices, fresh herbs. Enjoyed everything we tried, so I don't think you can go wrong, whatever you choose. This place was so quiet and felt so secret-- the music they were playing was just perfect for the atmosphere they are going for... and at just the right volume. Popped in on a Saturday night for a belated birthday drink with friends. Great atmosphere, music, lots of places to sit for such a small space. The bartender had an amazing mustache and made even better drinks. Try the Stimulus or the whiskey mint lemonade if you like bourbons. The "classy or trashy" was a perfect encapsulation of the place.
