We had walked by this location several time and always noticed they had lines out the door in the evening. On our last night in NYC, we decided to go ahead and pop in. They were having a summer special featuring two flavors. I remember thinking the pistachio was just okay (I've had better) but the straciatella was nice. It was my last day in NYC. The sun was shining and it seemed like a perfect time for an afternoon treat. I came upon this wonderful place and had to go inside. They had my favorite flavor of gelato, stracciatella. The scoop was presented in a cup lined with dark chocolate. I had a choice between dark or milk for the lining, duh! Dark! Then a coating of caramelized hazel nuts. The scoop of stracciatella was nestled on top. What a fabulous combination! The walls are lined with chocolate bars and bulk candies. However, it is the intimate seating area at the back of the shop that steals the show. You have the impression of sitting next to walls of cascading chocolate. Oh my venchi this spot is soooo good. Honestly hands down the best pistachio gelato spot for me! First when you walk in you are at the counter where all the gelato flavors await. You order first and then you go in front of the gelato flavors to watch them make your scoops. I got one scoop on a cone and the only weird thing was you order first and then you get your scoop and able to sample afterward. There's multiple people scooping so the line moves pretty fast. I got pistachio on a cone and it was so freaking good and comes with a tiny chocolate circle piece. It was about $7. Not sure if this is an accurate review considering I've never even tried the gelato here, but I love their hot chocolate and make a point to get some everytime I'm in town. The Suprema is extremely decadent with its hazelnut spread, and hazelnut crumbles but it's so so good. I always drink half and then save the other half for my morning coffee the next day. Staff is al always super sweet and helpful. Their chocolate assortments are lovely for gifts and j definitely will be back at some point to try their famous gelato. read more

I visited Venchi this past Sunday around 7 PM. Service at the counter was fine, but the table area in the rear of the store was disgusting. There were multiple stains on the mirror top tables, which could not be removed with a napkin. There was all kinds of trash on the floor: broken spoons, food, receipts, smudges, and stains from dropped food bits. Four people behind the counter and in the hour that we were there with friends from out of town, catching up, no one ever came back to clean, even when I pointed out the table problem. Venchi is a real treat. It's located directly across from Union Square Park and so easy to get to via the 4 train. I was fortunate to be able to visit by way of a chocolate tour. Venchi was the first spot on the tour. The location is not large but they still have seating in the back. The seating area is actually very attractive. In the seating area, there's a waterfall of sorts that makes the space so beautiful. The water wall is the perfect place to sit down and enjoy some delicious chocolate. Venchi was not the only chocolate spot I visited that day but it certainly was one of the best. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I was able to get some white chocolate and a few white chocolate raspberry heart shaped chocolates. I really enjoyed my brief visit at Venchi and the chocolate is die for. I thought I heard wrong and said, excuse me? can I get a taste of a flavor to see if it might be too sweet for me and he repeated again, you can taste it after you buy and I said, if I buy, that would not be a test so what kind of taste test is that? he ignored me after I questioned him. Last time we were in NYC, inconveniently I was not feeling all that well. I was getting a cold and was without much appetite...here in the city of fab food and restaurants no less! As my husband and I were strolling about the city, we passed by Venchi and I noted that they sold gelato which was about the only thing I actually felt like eating. What a beautiful store this is! Not only does Venchi sell absolutely delicious gelato, but all kinds of wonderful imported candies and chocolates too. What you can't miss is the flowing wall of chocolate which makes a dramatic backdrop. In fact we learned that this is America's largest chocolate waterfall which is kind of funny to think about since I have never seen a chocolate waterfall anywhere else. You can find Venchi shops throughout Rome and just like in Rome the gelato here is made in the Italian artisan tradition. Both water and milk based gelato is offered. It's nice to have that option for those who are dairy free. I'm not dairy free but I chose a water based flavor and it was still creamy and amazing. A man who worked there who was very outgoing and very friendly gave us samples of some of the chocolates...delicious. I also sampled a number of gelato flavors before I decided. Unfortunately too much time has gone by and I don't remember what flavor I ended up with but I do remember that I loved everything I sampled and that it was difficult to choose. I had Venchi several times in Italy and I can say that the mango flavor is pretty on point (I only had two flavors my entire time in Italy - mango and strawberry). My partner and I got the crepe nougatine and a small serving of gelato with raspberry and mango flavors. The line is usually out the door but it's pretty safe to say that they usually do not close on time. This is the second location I have gone to near closing time and no one was turned away for getting in line after the place was "closed". CREPE NOUGATINE. Soft chewy texture with chocolatey goodness and slight nougatine crunch and whipped cream to balance it all out. We both were surprised by the quality of the crepe given this is mostly a place for gelato or chocolate candy! We both really enjoyed it! GELATO. Raspberry and mango are delicious on those hot summer days when you want something refreshing and not heavy and creamy. Raspberry has a slight tart kick while the mango also has a strong refreshing flavor. The mango tastes just as it did in Italy (I can attest to that because I had venchi sometimes twice in one day!). I knocked off a star because Venchi in Italy always asks if you'd like a piece of chocolate on top of your gelato and I saw that several people were not offered this. If this is not offered to you, please ask for it as it's all part of the experience and Venchi is well known for their chocolates! The Devil Made Me Do IT! After I left Breads Bakery I was gonna check out another bakery on 18th Street. As I was passing the Storefront I saw HUGE Ice Cream Cones Out front. Then I noticed boxed chocolate and loose candies for sale by the pound. But I wasn't interested except to snap photos for you to see. I went straight to the the ice cream! There's only one flavor I was interested in trying. Pistachio! The employees were so friendly and answered my questions about ingredients and ice cream preparation. Then I was offered a taste. That's all it took. I ordered the small. It's deceptive but was plenty for me after I already ate recently! A scoop of the 'Baby ' size is $5.99 in a plain cup. I didn't ask the cost of a cone. I photographed the menu for you. I wasn't interested in the cone. I had a comfortable seat and enjoyed my ice cream. It's very special quality to me. This stuff is the real deal. There you have it.
