I've been chipping away at it over the last two days, and it's the gift that keeps on giving. Milk Bar is just another dessert place. It is not that special. It's overrated and overhyped simply from TV exposure. The desserts are non-traditional, but I am not sure they work. For example, their signature birthday cake has crunchy cookie crumbs in it. To me, those crunchy cookie crumbs taste like random crystals that do not belong in a cake (1 star off). For happy celebratory moments like birthdays, you expect a slightly sweet, smooth cake that easily melts in the mouth. After taking a bite, you want that "Ahh this bite makes this moment special" feeling. After a bite of the birthday cake here, I get a "What the heck is this hard thing" feeling instead. This applies tp their other cakes as well. The red velvet cheesecake not only has crunchy cookie crumbs, but it also has crunchy chocolate chips. So when you take a bite of what you expect to be a smooth cheesecake, you get that "What the heck is this hard thing" twice (1 star off). Don't even bother ordering their birthday cake for shipping. After a day or two in transit, it is no longer fresh. I ordered one during COVID pandemic and it tasted several days old. I wanted to visit this flagship store to give them another chance. The storefront ones do taste more fresh than shipped ones, but the storefront ones can even be a day or so old. Their "truffles" are non-traditional as well. They are more like cake pops mashed from leftover cake scraps and frosting. I was not into them. Lastly, the bathroom is gross (1 star off). For a cute bakery like this, I expected they would take some care to make their bathroom cute, or at the very least clean. It is messy and smelly. I will tell you that the only thing I like from the Milk Bar is their milk-and-cereal soft-serve.
