In Napa recently and wanted a dog friendly place to sit and have some wine. Vermeil Winery is on 1st street with a wonderful outdoor seating area with comfy sofas. Perfect place to people watch and have some adult refreshments. We were greeted by Don 2 who was welcoming, gracious and knowledgeable about wines He helped us choose a wine. He came out to check (and chat) on us several times. We selected a bottle of old vine Zinfandel and their Charcuterie board. OH so good! The wine was wonderful and so smooth paired with the meat and cheeses we were on cloud nine. Their tasting was on the pricey side which is why we elected to get a full bottle. Absolutely amazing! Went with my husband and in laws, we walked in and immediately got seated in comfy leather chairs around a glass table. We were able to chat with one of the servers(unfortunately I can't remember his name) but he gave us the history of how the business got started generations back of growing grapes. He related to my husband and father in law in the military(gave us the military discount which is always a perk). We got the chocolate paired flight for $50 each, really good price in my opinion for the quality of the wine and chocolates! It wasn't too loud and overwhelming like a lot of the other wine tasting places we walked by, great for when you want to just enjoy the wine, history, and conversation with your group. I always walk pass this place whenever I'm downtown but actually went in for some wine with a friend. Bought a bottle that wasn't released by Vermeil yet but somewhat worth it. There is a perfect little outdoor patio section with couches and lots of sunshine that we took full advantage of. The inside decor is sleek and modern. I can imagine this would be perfect for a date! I thought this winery boutique shop was just ok. My fiancée and I came in for their classic Flights for around $35/pp that consists of 5 glasses with generous pours. I thought each glass tasted a bit too sour (maybe because the grapes were a few years young?). We did enjoy their XXXIV red blend which had a nice soft tone. It was a bit dryer than the other reds and had a pretty well balanced fruity taste. I asked for a glass of water at the beginning but got ignored, the employees were nice but didn't seem interested in answering our questions or didn't really give detailed facts about each glass; he sort of rushed it. The boutique shop itself is cozy and modernized which I liked a lot. I wish the TV was on and I wish the employees were more interactive with their guests about how we liked our wines, food pairing, etc. I think if you're in downtown, this is a great winery to stop in for some tastings. read more

Located off of a plaza, near Starbucks in downtown Napa sits Vermeil Wines. I had studied up on their wines prior to our visit. Their winemaker is my favorite in the business Thomas Rivers Brown. Thomas is a wine savant. He has made more perfect wines than any other I have tasted and I have tasted a lot of great wines. Plenty of comfortable leather seating in this upscale tasting room. Relaxed, we went through the entire portfolio of wines Vermeil had to offer. Whites, Reds and blends all tasted fantastic. I was especially impressed with the single vineyard Cabernets. This is where Thomas shines and it showed with these Cabs. Tasting fees are on par for this quality of wine and we were grateful that ours were waived after I purchased some of the single vineyard cabs. Because Vermeil Wines is open longer than most tasting rooms this is a great stop if you venture downtown for dinner, in fact it is an easy walk to the Bounty Hunter or Coles Chophouse. First-Class Coach Makes Fabulous Wine!!! We happen to stumble upon Vermeil's while waiting for a table at Bounty Hunter. I had no idea that Dick owned a winery. He is my all-time favorite coach (Chief Fan) and as I looked around I realized that I was standing in Dick Vermeil's Place. The atmosphere is awesome and the wine even better! Stopped by on a Friday night and it was empty. Perfect for my husband and I after a long drive from LA. We each did a tasting of two different flights. Plenty of seating room and large TV's. It was like being at home, the set up is very relaxing. It's a mix of a wine lounge with a sport feel to it. The lady working that night was very informative and friendly. If you are a sports fan this is a very cool place to come visit. If you are a wine lover it is just average. The set up of the bar and its surrounding tables is very quaint. They have a large sitting area and a small private area off to the side.. We chose a table/booth off to the side and were brought a menu and glasses quickly. My wife had a flight that included whites and reds and I chose the zinfandel only flight. Both flights were reasonable about 25-40 dollars. The glasses are HUGE and they poor heavy. You almost get a full glass of wine with each tasting. I had a good time sipping on my wine and looking at all the sports memorabilia. My zis were very heavy. The tannin level on the younger wines were very pronounced. They would have done well to decant them a bit. We ended up hanging out for a while and picked up a bottle of wine. I buy wine for the memories. Months our years later I will open a bottle and immediately be brought back to that moment. I am giving them 2 stars due to the lack luster service. The two employees had groups of friends stop in for some quick pours and we felt bit forgotten. The employees were more interested in the NCAA tournament and less in discussing wine.
