Next door to Krupps (which we also loved) and this was just as amazing. Our party of four split one bottle of wine, and two of us got the flights with chocolate. All I can say is wow. Delicious wine, and the chocolate pairing really surprised me. I'm skeptical about "pairings" most of the time (or maybe my pallet isn't as refined, who can say) but these chocolates were paired AMAZINGLY with wines, and really changed my perspective on pairings in general. Outdoor area was just as nice as Krupps, and the service was top notch from Tom and our other server with a great sense of humor (forgot his name). Will be back! read more

Having spent the previous day on Platypus Tours wine tasting we were ready to do one more tasting before heading home. I downloaded a wine tasting finder app on my iPhone and saw the Mark Herold tasting room. The spelling of the name Herold is not common - people always misspell it (usually Harold). So, since we share the same last name I couldn't resist. I had never heard of Mark's wines before. The wines were fantastic. The pourer, Blake, is a very nice kid who told us about the cult status of the wines. We had a good time with him, and since we were the only ones in the store it was like a private tasting. We walked off with some wine of course, and couldn't resist the Herold engraved wine bottle openers. With the Oxbow Market next store this is a perfect spot to try amazing wines. You will love this winery. A wine tasting costs $20 but it is absolutely worth it (and they'll surely waive the fee with a purchase as they are remarkably friendly). There is also a chocolate pairing to go with the wine tasting which I did not have but I'm sure would be great. A main reason you will love this winery is the excellent service. They are knowledgable, attentive and will adjust your tasting to meet your needs/preferences. On top of that, the wine is fantastic. I personally loved the Riesling, which was one of the best wines on my vacation and of which I ended up buying a bottle (and even considered purchasing a case). After our tasting and buying the wines, our server surprised us with a complementary sample of the reserve Cabernet (a $195 bottle). It may have been the best wine I have ever had! They have a special menu of their 3 sweetest wines and I loved all 3. The first was a Riesling which was crisp and delicious. The other two were reds and the last was so sweet I nearly choked. This place has phenominal wines with a wonderful staff. We came here and did their joy flight ($25) with their chocolate pairing ($20) and it was worth every penny. Their rose is very unique for only $20. We came here on recommendation from our Bed & Breakfast, and it was a wonderful experience. Rachel was our pourer and she was so friendly, fun, and knowledgeable. She was also very accommodating- I don't enjoy red wine, so she substituted different wines for me to try. Eric was there helping as well. You HAVE to get the chocolate pairings. They are incredible. It costs $18 and it is worth every penny. The chocolates pair perfectly, and are delicious on their own as well. They are made exclusively for Mark Herold and made the experience perfect. We were in Napa for our friends wedding and we decided to make a pit stop to try some wine at Mark Herold because we had heard some good things. Boy were we impressed when we walked in the door. This place has such a cool vibe and we were immediately greeted by Tessa behind the bar. We ordered the wine flight and chocolate pairing. Tessa walked us through the flight and showed us a great time while we were there. The manager Mike was very friendly and continued to make sure we had a good time throughout our visit. After our wine flight we ended up buying a bottle of Rose and a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. We're very happy with Mark Herold, we'll definitely recommend to friends and we'll be back the next time we're in Napa. read more

Stopped by here on the recommendation of Christian at Gabrielle Winery and Breanna could not have been more welcoming! I have always been a Chardonnay fan, but was not having great luck finding ones I loved with how I was describing them. Small place with cool decor. Didn't care much for this place tho. All the grapes are imported from Lodi and other areas. I didn't come to Napa to drink wine made from grapes from others areas. Napa is know for its unique climate and ability to grow excellent cabs. local wineries should stick to what they do best. I would not go to this place again. Nor would I recommend. AVOID THIS WINERY -- mediocre, overpriced wines and atrocious customer service. We had never heard of Mark Herold wines but we were headed down through Napa for a day of tasting (we are locals, giving the whole "wine valley tour" to some family/guests), and when we stopped into hope & grace in Yountville (great wines, btw), the pourer gave us Mark Herold referral / 2-for-1 tasting coupon. So, when we ended up in Napa, getting a snack at Oxbow, we decided to stop into Mark Herold. That was a mistake we won't ever make again. 1) As soon as they saw the 2-for-1 tasting coupon, they stopped smiling and got fairly cold towards us. (look, if you don't want to do discount tastings, why do you hand out 2-for-1 promotion cards? Oh, I know why: because without it, your tasting is overpriced and we would have never stopped in to even try your wines in the first place!) 2) Two couples each decided to share their middle-level of tastings (I, for one, am usually a big Tempranillo fan; we were curious about some of the Tempranillo and Grenache blends) 3) Most of the wines were okay, but nothing memorable, and certainly nothing I would spend $60 (!!) on. That's absurd. The tempranillo blends were the best of the ones we tried, but still fairly mediocre; not as good as Numanthia Termes, which you can get for half that price. 4) After tasting, they tried to sell us hard on purchasing wines, and that they would waive the tasting fee if we bought a certain amount (I believe it was $75)... look, if your wines were good, you wouldn't have to convince me to buy them. I would be throwing my money at you. The wines should sell themselves. The fact that they don't, and the pourer has to try the hard sell, means one of two things: (a) They aren't good enough, or (b) They aren't priced correctly. 5) So we said "No, thank you, we'll just pay for the tasting." When they ran the card, apparently the machine got set to AUTOMATICALLY TIP the pourer, to the tune of over 20% (a $25 tasting fee turned into $32); this wasn't caught by us (because, um, it's not normal to tip at tasting rooms?) until it was processed and the final balance showed up. We asked to void the transaction and redo it at the correct price, and a taller man with long hair who seemed to be in charge at the moment indifferently said "No, we're not going to do that, we're too busy." When my wife started demanding it (on principle, if nothing else), he yelled "Fine, here's your money back!" and handed over $7 in cash. Overcharging your customers -- and then treating them like crap when they call you out for it -- is no way to run a business, especially when you are dealing with locals who otherwise might have returned (but probably wouldn't, because the wines are mediocre and overpriced, and so is the tasting if you don't get the 2-for-1 price.) read more

This was an awesome find! This was the second stop of our bachelorette party! 1.) Great service, great people! 2.) Tasting was 25 dollars, however our person who serviced us threw in so many more than the scheduled five. Definitely worth it! We also got chocolate to go with it. 3.) Our last stop of the day on our first day of wine tasting, and this was definitely the most fun place we visited. The tasting room has a cool funky vibe - it's small but there are a lot of fun things to look at crammed in there. You sit around the bar for the tasting. We went with a chocolate pairing as well that was super cool - delicious chocolates that are actually made with the wines for the tasting! Do it! Our host was a younger guy (sorry, I can't remember your name!) who was knowledgeable and fun, and let us sample quite a few other wines. The wines were great here and I loved the variety of different wines they offered. I went home with a bottle of the Flux Rose. I highly recommend this place to anyone who likes good wine paired with a cool tasting room and friendly staff. There is a younger vibe for sure, but I wouldn't say it's just for younger people - just come by and check this place out! read more

First the wines: rather plain and unexciting. I'd give them a two to three star rating if all we were rating were the wines. Unfortunately the quality of the wine is marred by the pouring into whiskey glasses instead of wine glasses. Also using the same glass for all the pairings blurs all aspects of considering the wine. Very small pours. So while the wines were palatable, they could not be really considered because of the inadequate glass(es). Also it's extremely rude to offer additional tastings to only some members of the same party. If you choose to visit this tasting room, just be clear that offensiveness is their strong point, apparently opted for due to inability to compete with the professional standard in Napa Valley. From the disturbing art on the walls to the heavy metal music, to the T-shirt wearing pourers to the offensive jokes which never end, this establishment certainly represents the height of classlessness. The degree of low-ball sexual jokes in particular represents a sort of verbal sexual harassment. Inquiring about where my party and I met, the host suggested that we must have met at "grinder". The host pointed out that 'everything in the space is a sexual innuendo', making sure to point out that large plastic fish head on the wall was pointing to the crotch of a female mannequin- all part of their tasteless decor. I don't mind a host with character- but with constant offensiveness? Dean, our host, is apparently more interested in low-ball humor, references to 'getting high', feigned sexual passes at his colleague behind the counter, and relentless insulting than attempting to do justice to the winemaker's efforts. His introductory comment that "nothing is sacred" inside the space was really an understatement. A suggestion: let your guests attempt to taste wine in a decent atmosphere. read more

This place is truly awesome. . . that is if you like small batch wines without the attitude, all of the fun, and loads of balanced flavor! I stumbled on these guys by accident when heading to the Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa (they/re next door) to grab some oysters and bubbly at Hog Island Oyster Company (also highly recommended!) Man, was I glad I did. The tasting room has one of the coolest vibes I've yet to experience in wine country and you dont have the hassle of driving the Silverado Trail or Hwy 29 Great music and a lively funky, eclectic industrial vibe that is hard to explain but really chill and relaxing. I was told by the host pouring the wines that it's pretty much all from the mind of a "genius, mad scientist bon vivant" known as Mark Herold. If so, I got to meet this guy! From the giant marlin with a custom show-car paint job to the "Marquis de Sade" argon gas wine dispensing system (I'm told built by Mark) this place rates an "A+" in originality. If that weren't enough - the wines are pretty damn tasty and the choice really diverse. Tastings cost $20 and include 6 wines in the line-up. It's rare tthat I actually enjoy everything I taste, but that's exactly what happened. On a personal note, I really liked the Acha Blanca - 100% Albarinho grape. It's about as crisp as crisp can be. I was also surprised by one of Herold's client wines called MAZE - it was really elegant - surprising because I think of 100% Cabs as "monster juice" but this was really smooth and polished. Oh, and make sure to ask about the Kobalt Port - its not on the list but they will give you a taste if you ask - fortified with Viognier Grappa - Yowza, its good! Before I forget - the guy running the tasting room really knows what he's talking about but without any of that pompous attitude that can rear it's ugly head in Napa. He's also pretty funny - a perfect fit in a tasting room that's all about having a good time. Something else I like that you really don't see in tasting rooms is the option to just get a glass if you are not in the mood for the usual full-on tasting experience. I could easily see just popping in for glass on the way to lunch or dinner since there are so many restaurants in downtown Napa now. So what's the take-away? Don't miss "Wines by Mark Herold!" P.S. Having tried the ACHA at Bounty Hunter up the street, the boyfriend and I became very curious about Mark Herold wines. We were walking back from the farmer's market and realized that his tasting room was right there!! Of course we had to stop in for a tasting. The atmosphere of the place is super cool to start off with. The wine dispensing system is so smart and keeps the wine from being exposed to air. The design is very cool, incorporating elements from the sea and creates what could be a vintage laboratory (since Mr. Herold was first a fish biologist) that just so happens to serve wine. The wine was excellent and we were taken through it by Dean, the sole person working there. He seemed to enjoy having run of his own show and was very knowledgeable and you can tell he's involved in many different aspects of the business. He's not just another pourer. The tasting was $20, but was waived since we walked away with a very light and refreshing 2010 Flux Blanc and a 2008 ACHA. it was a wonderful experience and I know we will be back to purchase more. read more

Found this spot using the tasting card for downtown Napa. The tasting included with the card for this particular spot was underwhelming. However, the point of he card is to get you exploring! The setting is pretty funky and cool, definitely a neat place to come and hang out. Unfortunately, there isn't much seating and maybe it was the time we came in but we felt rushed as far as the tasting goes. They did seem slightly busy but the rushing and unwelcoming vibe made us leave early than we would have any other place. If you have the card go check it out, maybe it was just an off time for us. So let's get one thing clear-- I don't drink alcohol. So it's almost dumb that I'm reviewing this place. But I am a local, in that I work in the valley and I like to give props where they're due and be critical when I think it may be helpful. Here's a bit of both. This place is chill. Right next to Oxbow. And it feels a lot more calm than Oxbow. There are only a few tables so you can't have a bunch of people sitting. But if you're stopping by to just taste, the bar is sufficient. There are a bunch of quirky guys, mostly, working the place. They are borderline offensive and for whatever reason, it was so refreshing to be there because the place didn't feel pretentious or too classy. Went today with my homie, colleague and she drank wine-- they let me bring my iced tea in, which was cool. Saw some women across from us, young-ish, playing cards and drinking wine. So good times. Pretty sure I could come back and chill with colleagues. The borderline offensive didn't seem to bother me as much as it could have because dude who was talking to us read our vibe pretty quick and asked where we were from, etc. read more
