I really enjoyed dinner here on a Sunday night. Lovely ambiance with some great albeit a little bit pricey food and attentive service. Our waiter was super friendly and offered some solid recommendations. Of the two dishes I shared, I would definitely recommend the rainbow trout, really just an overall great dish. The butter melts off the beautifully seared fish onto bulgur and vegetables below. The bulgur really brings the dish together, adding a nice base that absorbs the flavor of the fish while providing a nice grainy texture. The vegetables add a loveliness and dash of color. Great presentation and super tasty. The bistro filet was also quite enjoyable, especially the meat itself, although the dish as a whole was somewhat underwhelming. The steak was incredibly tender and flavorful but a somewhat small portion. Really I just didn't care for the sides. Sure they were good but they felt disconnected and didn't complement the steak at all. They were relatively fancy versions of standard sides (potato, brocollini, and onions) that felt disjointed from the rest of the plate. My beau and I enjoyed Vermilion's restaurant week lunch special this past weekend: an appetizer, entrée, and dessert for $20, it's a great deal! For apps, he got the hushpuppies, which were moist and delicious but pretty heavy so I stopped after eating 1.5 haha. I got the spinach/endive salad with walnuts & pomegranate which was refreshing and crisp. We both chose the salmon (cooked medium) as our entrées because the other options of the pasta and omelette weren't appealing. It was pretty good but nothing really memorable to the point we'll come back again specifically for the salmon. As for desserts, we tried the oreo cheesecake & the banana key lime custard, which were perfect complements since one was densely rich with chocolate and the other more tart/fruity. The service was a bit slow, but it seemed like they were really busy before we came in for lunch which was around 2 pm so I can understand them needing a break. I had never tried hush puppies before, and don't think I'll need to try them anywhere else. Ever. It has to be the sauces that come with these puppies at Vermillion. It's really life-changing. Aside from the hush puppies, the service is great. Both times I've been--once at the end of the lunch rush, and once for late night drinks--we've had fantastic service. I've come to expect very little from the wait staff at restaurants on King Street, but Vermillion is above the rest. About a 2-2.5: I was very excited to finally try this restaurant out, as it has been on my list for years! We came here for a brunch reservation. Our server was Melissa, and she was very sweet. We were seated upstairs, and although it was a tight squeeze, I did like the decor of the wall with the pickled jars as well as the wine bottles lining the walls. We started off with the Roasted Winter Squash Soup (chicken crackling, stayman apple, and clobbered cream) and the cornmeal Hushpuppies (bread & butter pickles and 3 dipping sauces - garlic aioli, roumelade, and chipotle mayo). The soup was warm and thick, kind of had a consistency of mango mousse - I liked the bitterness of the sunflower sprouts and the clobbered cream for extra creaminess. The hushpuppies were okay, and I wasn't a fan of the trio of the sauces - I think I would have preferred just a butter spread. We were also given a basket of chocolate chip pecan muffins, and they had a slightly crispy exterior and melting chocolate chips inside - not too sweet, but it was good. For the entrees, we ordered the Baked Eggs (which came with cheddar grits, roasted mushroom, chorizo and fresno pepper), and Buttermilk Pancakes (with spiced apples, whipped sorghum butter and a choice of pork - we went with the housemade sausage). The baked eggs were fine - I like it when the yolk has that slight jelly consistency; the cubed chorizo were very 'crunchy' and hard, and seemed like 'bacon bits' in chorizo form. My favorite out of the whole meal were the pancakes - it had a slight crispy exterior and the flavors were quite nice! It wasn't overly sweet at all, with the right amount of cinnamon and spices; the apples were also complementary, and the combination of the creamy sorghum butter and the nice syrup made the dish quite nice. I don't eat meat so my choices at that time were limited. I enjoyed the atmosphere and service yet based on that one experience, never went back...until today. The menu is vegetarian friendly too! My gal pal treated my mom and me to a birthday brunch. Well, smack me on the side of the head. I will make sure i become a more familiar face from now on! -excellent service and attentive -ample (sounds like my hips after a chocolate binge) portions -delicious food And to top it off, they brought out this snickers dessert with a candle ( one candle = 57 years) and yes, even a hand written note in an envelope wishing me a Happy Birthday and thanking us for coming in. I was quite surprised and impressed. Not many people provide birthday desserts - that can get costly and i've never received a hand written note thanking us for our business - i have seen personalized menus but this was a first. Restaurant Week Review: My good friend and I decided to go to Vermilion for Restaurant Week. We ventured out and finally found the restaurant. Inside was very warm, red, and had a quiet cozy atmosphere that was comfortable and not stuffy. As my first course, I ordered the Strobe Ranch Waygu Carpiccio which was meltingly delicious. There was home made "gold fish" cheddar crackers - very good combo with the beef. The description says 'spicy' but it was exactly like goldfish crackers - simple which was good and did not take away from the beef. The caramelized onion aolii was amazing and was great with the way waygu, shitakes, and crackers. I left nothing on the plate. My second course, I ordered the Salmon. I don't know why I ordered fish two days in a row (first was Hook) but it was one of the best salmon dishes (beside my mother's asian style with oyster sauce) but it was NOT overcooked at all. Extremely moist and not dry at all! (salmon is easily overcooked and can be quite dry if so). I finished the entire thing. :) Dessert - ooommmggg. I LOVE LOVE exotic "different" desserts. Any place that can make the extra effort to make desserts amazing or even offer a different twist/take on it...they are great in my favor. I forget the name but it was basically orange and vanilla ice cream with small balls of melon and cantaloupe, a melon/cantaloupe soup, and delicious lemon meringue cookies - soo light yet crisp. The "melon soup" was different, I'm not a big fan of melon but with the lemon cookies and ice cream, it was a light and refreshing summer dessert. Simple yet the soup added the 'twist' that made it memorable for me. Service - awesome. No coldness, snootiness, or attitude. Very helpful, prompt, refilled our waters, and made sure we did not need anything. They also did not rush us which I find a plus especially during the typical RW. Portions were perfect - I was stuffed at the end. I forget what cocktail I ordered but it was a good recommendation from our server and went well with my salmon. Actual date visited: August 15, 2009 After reading many, many Yelp reviews I decided to give Vermilion a chance. It was the boyfriend's birthday and an ideal place to start off what would be a long night of wild celebrations. Ambiance: The dress attire looks to be business casual. I wouldn't walk in with my ripped jeans and old t-shirt but jeans with a blazer on top of a casual shirt would suffice. I called in ahead and requested for a corner table, upstairs, next to the windows. There are three tables with next to window seatings, as there are three windows overlooking King Street. Kudos to the hostess for being able to accommodate my request. The upstairs is definitely more of a dining area versus the downstairs, where the bar is located. They have brick walls, giving off an intimate dining feel and one side of the wall devoted to wines. Food: For starters we ordered the boudin sausage and the half rack of crispy dragon creek oysters. Why does the half rack only consist of five oysters? Although tasty, I admit I was a bit disappointed at the quantity, thinking I'd be getting six oysters. I didn't care too much for the sausage either, as it seemed a bit salty for my taste. For my main, I ordered the barbecued spring chicken and him the pork chop milanese. I had been craving for a juicy tender chicken and the dish was 100% on target. I wish the mashed potatoes was more potatoes and less all the other ingredients. There was too much flavor and texture going on, taking the mashed potatoes concept away. The boyfriends pork chop was a bit under cooked, showing a little pink in the meat. I'm not a fan of partially cooked pork, so I didn't think to delve into it. We ordered a bottle of rose, which was light enough and a good pairing for both our dishes. Service: Our waiter was attentive and not pushy. I noticed, from the corner of my eye, he tried to come over a few times but backed away when he saw we were in midst a conversation. He did bring out the wrong bottle of wine but that was easily forgiven. I did overhear him recommend to the table next to us some of his favorites, which he lacked to do for us. Overall: The portions to price ratio is right on target, for the class of restaurants Vermilion would fall under. I was completely full and wasn't able to try their dessert selection. Vermilion gets three stars because the menu isn't very diverse and a bit bland. Although I was satisfied with my main dish, the other three dishes seemed a bit boring and lacking the flavor I was anticipating. The manager stopped by a couple times and was funny and professional at the same time. The food was delicious. Most of their menu is available in tasting sizes and we took advantage of this. We tasted several meals in a tapas style. The duck liver croquettes, spicy steak tartare, braise veal terrine, stelle, ricotta gnocchi, and Tagliatelle were all fantastic!! Vermilion was too good. Our waiter, Anthony, was great. He made several suggestions that were great. First of all, the Charred Octopus was excellent. I definitely recommend that. I had a glass of Pinot Noir from Sicily that was very good. For dinner, the Pork Loin was good. I really liked the peas and mushrooms that accompanied it in a delicious sauce. Desert was the Chocolate Ganache. If you love chocolate, it is a must. The restaurant is very aesthetically pleasing from outside in. The bar is beautiful and the seating area reminds me of my favorite bar in Santa Cruz where you can have an intimate conversation with your libations. If you're in the area of DC or Alexandria, it would be fair to say that you should definitely try Vermilion. read more

I have wanted to dine at Vermilion for a while and made sure I had reservations during Restaurant Week. The building is great and so is the enterer. For a medium sized space, it's being utilized very well. We arrived a bit early and were escorted to the bar until we were ready to be seated. We sat upstairs and I really liked the space. The service was impeccable. The staff is friendly and professional; they must sample all the dishes because our server knew exactly what we would like and not like. She made excellent recommendations. Appetizer: I ordered the crispy pork keftedes with shaved zucchini "carpaccio," house made yogurt, almonds & torn spearmint. Wonderful is all I can say. A bit more salty than I thought it would be but it was really good. I could have eaten another plate full. I also sampled the squid ink fettuccini, I'm not a fan of squid ink but if you like squid ink then you will really like this dish. It wasn't overall powerful just a subtle flavor. Entrée: My entrée was the faroe island atlantic salmon with grilled butter crunch lettuce, local filet beans & everything "niçoise". I ordered the salmon medium instead of medium rare. Which may not be the chef's choice but I loved it. The enter entrée was wonderful. Loved it. I tried my friends fresh goat cheese tortelloni roasted baby beets & their greens, poppy seeds & toasted walnut froth. I'm not a goat cheese person or even a cheese person but I believe you should always try things from different restaurants. The chef's put their own spin on the food and you never know what you will enjoy. This was better than I had anticipated. This dish it was really rich and flavorful, I have to admit, I did like it. Dessert: I ordered the warm ricotta fritters with whipped vanilla pudding, pecans & raspberry sorbet. I'm a huge fan of fritters and anything raspberry, so I was thrilled with my dessert, very good. I wish I could write a better review but I can't. Vermilion is just a quaint restaurant with a charming exterior, drab interior, and subpar food. Ouch. We stopped in during restaurant week and were disappointed in practically everything except the buttery bread for the table. Our server did everything he could to avoid doing his job. We saw him for our food and drink order but he went missing up until we finally got our check. Thank goodness the water boys were attentive. The fluke was fishy and the garlic soup was beef broth. Not even a vampire could detect garlic flavor. The tagliatelle had an offensive spicy seasoning and the broccoli rabe had the same gross taste. It tasted like sour red pepper flakes or spoiled cumin or something else very unappetizing that doesn't belong in the dish. The kitchen must have drizzled this certain something awful across all dishes as the flavor of the night. The doughnuts had the wrong consistency and tasted like chunky nothing powder. The olive oil cake was absolutely delicious. Well that's good. Because you can't just make it on table bread alone. read more

We made a last minute brunch reservation on a Sunday and it was the perfect choice. We were promptly greeted and led upstairs to a table for two overlooking King Street, which made for great people watching as we waited. Our waiter had a great sense of humor and made great craft cocktail reconditions. We both ordered the prix fixe brunch-- a screaming deal at $22. Between us we had a yogurt parfait, tagliatelle, roasted salmon, and a salmon Benedict. All fabulous. We were never rushed and had a lovely brunch. I live around the corner from Vermilion and have been a handful of times. The lounge area has some counches for a comfy feel, the bar, a couple small tables and a long community table. You can generally find a spot to sit any time and the service is friendly. For happy hour definitely the hush puppies, artichoke dip or pimiento dip. Pass on the fried calamari - it's a tiny serving even at happy hour prices. Good wine and spirits selection. Specialty cocktails are good as well. Check them out for dinner, just be prepared when you get the check - not a cheap meal for entrees and drinks. They were good but I stick to drinks and appetizers. read more

We went to have a dinner on Friday night without reservation. They said that the waiting time was 45 minutes. We put our name in a waiting list and waited at the bar. When I looked around, some of people dressed up some were casual. So the dress code does not matter. We sat at the booth. It was very comfortable to sit. I loved it. I had a cup of White Riesling. It was okay. It did not have much taste in a wine. When we were having a drink, we ordered Fried oysters. I liked that it had mint in it. It was a great combination of fried and mint. I really wanted to like this place, and I did -- but I wasn't wowed in any way, and I didn't feel like the meal I had deserves accolades to place Vermilion alongside all of the wonderful restaurants in DC proper, or even its competitors in Old Town. (If you're looking for a great meal on King Street, I'd recommend Brabo, a few blocks down.) The shrimp & grits starter was nice comfort food, but not much more; the cheddar grits had a great texture--not too smooth--and the Carolina shrimp were big and juicy. I felt like the spiced tomato sauce could have used a lot more "spice," because the dish was generally pretty bland. My entree, the pan-seared rainbow trout, didn't seem to me very unified. I was totally baffled by what I assume was the "stuffed squash blossom," which was fried and stuffed with an unknown substance. Absent that, the rest of the dish was pretty tasty. The local asparagus, baby zucchini, and toasted bulgur were lovely in combo with the tarragon butter that came on the fish. My "sparkling" riesling wasn't so sparkling, but it tasted fine. Maybe I was getting the last glass in the bottle? By the end of my meal, I felt a bit like I came to this restaurant after it had lost some of its air... Came by for my husband's birthday dinner. We started at the bar, the bartender with blue hair, I wish we had asked for her name, took great care of us. My husband loves anything with Campari and he said their Spritz was excellent. We also had steak tartare and the duck wings and they were delicious and bonus, their happy hour specials are seriously good value. Then when we sat down for dinner, I started feel a bit faint, and our server Skylar was really patient with us and went over the top offering me tea with ginger and I could tell she genuinely cared. We were sitting there for about 15-20 minutes debating going home and skipping dinner before I started to feel better. Throughout this entire time, Skylar constantly checked to see how I was doing and never made us feel rushed to order. Our food, which was recommended by our wonderful server, was excellent! We started with the garlic and corn ravioli which was perfectly cooked al dente (We will definitely be back for the pasta specials on monday nights). Then I had the NY Strip which was cooked perfectly and my husband had the Suckling Pig that Skylar recommended. You can tell the kitchen genuinely thinks about the composition of the dishes they put out. Not only are they cooked and seasoned perfectly, the presentation is immaculate. We finished with the fall fruit dessert. Usually we would have skipped dessert but we were having such a great time that we didn't want the night to end. One of my favorite restaurants in Old Town. Love the decor - very romantic. It's dark and candles create a nice ambiance for date night. I've also been here for dinner with the girls. Perfect for enjoying great drinks and a delicious meal. Some of my favorites: Calamari - light and crispy. Very good, definitely something to try. Vermillion is a solid, very Alexandrian restaurant that gets a lot of things right but doesn't blow my socks off in any particular way. Vermillion is a high-end restaurant located in what is effectively a row home on King Street. It's very nice and spacious inside, and very nicely decorated. Prices are fairly high, but not exorbitantly so, and service is great. The food here is decent but not the best. The steak tartare appetizer was good, but far from the best I've had, and a bit heavy on the wasabi (or horseradish?). The lamb loin was superbly cooked, but was a bit anemic in terms of portion size. The beans were also nice, though they dominated the dish a bit. The pineapple tart(?) I had for dessert was actually the best I had - genuinely enjoyed it. There's definitely a lot of skill that the cooks have, I'd just have hoped for a slightly better set of dishes. I'll definitely go back, though - you can tell that, with the right dish, this place would rock your socks off. read more

I've been here twice for brunch both before the Alexandria St. Patrick's day parade. I'll review this year's brunch, but last year's brunch was just as delicous (I still remember exactly what I got). The service here is very good. We had made a reservation for 4, but came in and said, we actually will need a table for 9, or some combination to accomade 9 people. The hostess and manager came up with two different combinations that worked well for us and were very nice about. The server was very knowledgeable about the menu and also offered good suggestions. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with two eggs and potato latkes. The biscuits were sweet potato, but didn't taste like it and were perfect. The gravy had a wonderful peppery taste. I ordered my eggs poached per the server's suggestion and the runny yolk worked perfectly with the gravy, the biscuits and the crispy latkes. It was a fantastic meal and very satisfying! Everyone at the table enjoyed their food and no one had anything negative to say. The experience was delightful and it's a very cozy and warm yet open restaurant. Besides the delicious food, my favorite things about this restaurant were the atmosphere as well as the excellent service. First off, I tried one of their pasta dishes and it was very good. Definitely recommend that. The waitress was very attentive and after telling her it was my birthday, she gave me a free birthday treat and a hand written birthday card. An over all good meal. I do have two comments. First, while the duck liver croquettes were delicious, I couldn't tell that there were any hint of duck liver there and I like the taste of liver. In fact, the menu described the dish of having smoked ricotta, I see the ricotta but couldn't taste any smoked flavor. The second thing is the breads. The breads are all very good and they bring them out quite warm. But my breads came after I already started on the first course. The focaccia was only good if you ate them hot but if you couldn't get to them right away and they cool off, they're too crispy to the point of hard. read more

Cute place (like everything on King street). Quiet. My roasted chicken, with split pea puree and ragout was delicious, but the chicken was a smidge undercooked. (Should have sent it back but I was in a rush) Otherwise it was perfectly crispy on outside and juicy on the inside. I asked for no onion so not sure if the dish was already made without it or they made a fresh batch for me. In either case since I have an onion "intolerance" I was a HAPPY lady. (Every restraunt messes this up. Most always.) The dish was delicious and zucchini was cooked perfectly. Black iced tea was above average. Only 3 stars because the service. Maybe others are better but our guy was a little abrasive and ignored me three times when I called for him to bring the check. However speed of service throughout was good. read more

We've been watching the reservations for Vermilion for quite a while and have been super excited to try it. I can't say it lived up to the hype. We had a reservation and were seated quickly but dinner was sub par and so was service. Our poor server was working his tail off and couldn't get any help. He had so many tables! We can't fault him for this but it is disappointing overall that we paid that much for dinner and still had a sub par experience. We ordered a bottle of wine with our appetizer and it didn't come until after we were completely finished with dinner and ready for a check. First time back at Vermillion since it reopened and I'm so sad to say it is nothing like it was previously. The food was bland and so very disappointing. So disappointed. Went here based on rave reviews. Reservation was at 7pm. Husband ordered Octupus. Waiter came back to say it was unavailable. Husband decided on braised short ribs. Not available. Waiter said there's a special of the day "rib eye". Husband ordered rib eye, medium rare. Orders arrived. Husband ate veggies, found steak (which chef had already sliced) tough and sinewy (@ medium rare?) Called the waiter to say this isn't rib eye - it looked and tasted like flank or london broil. Waiter said he'll check with chef. Waiter kept on coming back to other tables to serve. Never came back to our table - saw him serving others but forgot about us. Other waitstaff came to clear out our table. Husband's plate was left at our request. Finally asked for our waiter to come back to find out what was happening. He came back to say steak wasn't rib eye but skirt steak. No apology. He was going to talk to the manager to see what he could do but he could not promise anything. Also pointed out that my husband ate some of the steak - Duh! He was trying to eat it but just could not continue. Bait and Switch is not good business practice. If someone complains about the food the manager should have run to us to see what was wrong and see how he could make it right. Would not recommend this joint that poses as a fine dining restaurant but the food isn't "fine". Sorry. read more
