Pancakes - look good, however a bit dry
    Marjorie P.

We dine here every few months & it's always a decent meal. They used to be open 24/7, but since Covid, they have kept more limited hours. I wish the late nights would come back for those midnight snacks I sometimes crave. The Vernon Diner has a large diverse menu. And there are all the cakes & pastries displayed in the glass case when you come inside - all look delicious. They recently built a really nice and bright enclosed porch complete with heaters & a/c. The service is always very good. Parking can be an issue during busy times, and we often have to end up parking near the bank next door. This visit was breakfast. I usually order the egg sandwich, however I opted for the pancakes this time. They were ok - large, fluffy. But a bit dry. So I'm back to my tried & true breakfast sandwich next time.

Big fan of diner food, and they didn't disappoint! I'm a simple breakfast guy, so I the basic grand slam is my thing! I swear the food was on the table before I finished ordering it. I was worried when I pulled into the parking lot because it was packed! I got seated pretty quickly as they managed the tables without making me feel it's time to go.

For our monthly get together, stopped in w 3 friends after morning Mass at St. Luke's in Ellington. Signs on the front doors proudly proclaiming Best Diner in Hartford area in both 2024 and 2025. So I was excited, especially this being my first time at VD. Having grown up in Yonkers NY where, as a young adult, there were no less than eight 24/7, 365 diners w/I a 5-mi radius from home, I was totally underwhelmed by the Vernon Diner. First, the positives: service excellent, prices pretty reasonable, HFs good. However, I literally ate the last gulp off my first cup of coffee. The bottom and side of my cup covered in grinds. Nasty. Replacement cup better, but bitter. The rye toast was actually marble rye bread, barely warm. The 3 of is who had it agreed. My meat lover's omelet was good, not great. To my liking, a bit overcooked. If the criteria for being voted best diner is that you must have the actual word "diner" in your name, then maybe VD rates. However, there are so many better breakfast spots in Hartford county, in my opinion. 2 and 1/2 grounded stars

    Kinda dry pastrami, great slaw

Traveling south we stopped for a late lunch at the Diner. Sometime we will have to just plan on dessert, cuz so far we've not had room after our meal! I opted for a pastrami on rye, it was a bit too dry for me - slathered mustard and wished I'd said no to toasting it. Wayne had a special - Mac & cheese served with a crab cake - it was fabulous. Our server was great, attentive and pleasant.

This is our favorite diner!!! The atmosphere is so clean and retro! And the food is amazing, the sandwiches and wraps are delightful and the waffle fries are so crunchy. Our server was very kind and attentive! This is our go-to diner for lunch!

Nice atmosphere great people! Exit 65 off i-84 route 30 Wonderful ambience traditional diner feeling sickeningly delicious looking pastries!

Service was mediocre; not the best or worst I've had here. The corned beef hash is always good but it's extra good if you get it extra extra crispy!!! It's the only way I'll get them with all the crispy bits. Their desserts are always good, especially the baklava. Ambiance is typical diner. Inside could use updating but they just built an indoor patio area but I have yet to be eaten in the area. It looks really nice and updated though. Parking can be a little tough sometimes if you go during peak hours. Their handicap parking is on the side and limited.

A huge selection on their menu can satisfy everyone in your party. And 0MG leave room for cake. My favorite is the carrot cake.

Also, the Chick-fil-A drive thru which dominates the three restaurants in the building was jammin. So cars were coming and going like it was rush-hour on the Long Island Expressway. We ordered at the counter, and the food was delivered to us at our table. There were two televisions, going one with a football game on it from I don't know where or who is playing, and the Senate hearings were going on another television. In the background was music. It was a little busy noise wise to say the least. I ordered a lamb Gyro, , which which included tzatziki sauce, cucumber, tomato, and onion. Also included with this order, were shoestring french fries that were well seasoned, crisp, and on point. The fries reminded me of McDonald's. Also included was a fountain drink. The restaurant was slow, with one party of two just finishing up when we walked in. I saw only one other customer walk in when we were eating. So in other words, this place was dead. Jersey Mike's next-door was hopping, along with two doors down Chick-fil-A. Lunch was quite expensive at $32 for two. My friend had a cheesesteak with fries which didn't look big at all. All in all, I don't see the value here. The food was good, but really pricey. This was a destination to try once. On the way out, I did notice pizzas on the counter selling per slice. Those didn't look appetizing. With so many restaurants in Glastonbury, there are many better choices than this On a positive note, it was nice seeing the lamb carved from a spit that was going behind the counter.

If the truth be known and you need to trust me on this, my wife and I find our way to the Crazy one's doorsteps at least once a month. A pair of gyros happens to be our standard order proof of which, at least in my mind, is as we entered the cashier/server held up 2 fingers to which my wife and I affirmed by nodding our heads as we proceeded directly to one of the inside tables. Also included in our order was a diet coke for the lady and a Mythos beer for me. The gyros arrived hot with an abundance of meat freshly sliced off the rotisserie grill and heated further on a horizontal grill before being enveloped along with tomatoes, lettuce, red onion and tzatziki sauce in a heated pita. Parking is therefore pretty good, and there is outdoor and indoor seating. There are picnic tables outside, and regular tables and chairs inside. There is a restroom. The food was ready quickly. The hummus had a little kick to it, more then say a store brand. The crazy Greek gyro was huge. The sauce had something I didnt care for texture wise, but the taste was good . The chicken was savory. The serving was huge! Definitely a cute stop.

The inside was entirely empty, a few people stopped by to pick up their orders, but no one was dining inside. On the wall they have awards they've received from 2011 to 2025, all for being in the top 10 restaurants. It was a bit awkward being the only ones here, but there are bigger issues in the world. Their menu offers pizzas, pasta, gyros, salads and more. We first got an order of their sautéed calamari. This had a nice tender and chewy texture. This is unlike what most places offer. The sauce was also very flavorful, we actually ate it by the spoonful like a soup. Their garlic bread was great for dipping into the sauce. Not a very garlicky garlic bread but not bad. We all got some variation of the gyro, with salad, fries or rice. Mine was with the Greek Salad. This Greek Salad was very fresh and the feta cheese on it sealed it all together. Unfortunately the lamb in the gyro was very overcooked and dry. It wasn't good at all. The tzatziki sauce is always a favorite. Overall I wasn't super impressed with my meal. I might stop by sometime in the future and try something else.

But as we know this IS the spot on the map for the best pizza, not the south end of the state, its up here in the middle. And Adriatik blends right in. You looking for a pasta dish, you'll find something worth checking out. Baked Manicotti was good. Prices are getting up there, as they are everywhere. Plenty of tables inside, has an old school pizza place vibe. Staff is always friendly and happy to see you.
