It's been a while since I stopped by and I had visions of a really good diner in my head. Alas, it's a bit more of a standard diner. Standard fare with prices that aren't the cheapest around. Got a chili omelette and I didn't love the chili with far too many beans that were more like baked beans, than chili. The bacon too was nearly flavorless. Sigh. The chocolate chip pancakes my dining companion got fell apart upon slicing. They were rich though with plenty of chocolate chips. Service was good and the coffee was pretty good too. Horrible service. The person who was serving initially was courteous and friendly. The other person who served next was trying to push us leave the table, because we were having a good conversation. If you are worried about the revenue and pushing us out is going to bring more profit, when more than half the restaurant is empty. Chicken wings was friend chicken. After our very positive experience at the Vernon Diner, we walked up to the register to pay our bill, and chatted with the manager. The menu boasted that the diner was open 24/7, so we asked him about that and he said "We've been open every day since 2000." That was the equivalent of dropping the mic on the floor and taking a triumphant strut off the stage. This was our first visit, and we absolutely loved it. It's huge (the website says they can seat 300). It's beautiful -the booths are very comfortable and they are in such great condition (no worn cushions or duct tape) that they look new. The service was stellar -lots of friendly smiles and water and coffee refills. The menu is gigantic. The owner graduated from the French culinary institute in New York City and personally makes the diner's gorgeous cakes you'll see in a revolving showcase the minute you walk in. But despite of all this, you go to a diner for the food, and our food was great. They offer breakfast all day, and that's what we were in the mood for -a ham and cheese omelet ($8.45) and Huevos Rancheros ($9.50). Coffees were $2.10 each. This place use to be awesome, but has gone way downhill over the years (change in owners?). On my last visit I ordered a cheeseburger as I usually do and when it came out there was maybe a few shreds of cheese on it, so few I didn't think there was cheese on it, and the wait staff are inattentive at best and were very rude. It still looks exactly the same on the inside as it has after the renovations a few years ago, but they need a whole new crew (kitchen, wait, and management) if they're going to continue to survive. We've gone here for breakfast a few times a few years ago. We went for lunch today, I got the patty melt with onion rings. The flavor was great, the burger was a bit over cooked to how I asked for it and there was a TON of onions on it. Thankfully it didn't overpower the dish. I've been going to the Vernon Diner for many years. What I appreciate most is that it is somewhere you can go if you aren't sure what you are in the mood for. Being a "diner," it has a diverse menu and is open for about 15 hours a day. The owner takes great pride in his restaurant, investing money back into it to keep it up. And, when he's in, he enjoys meeting and socializing with the customers. With the exception of the calamari, most of the food is very good, visually appealing, and plentiful. The downside is that the friendliness and promptness of the servers is a hit or miss experience, and the prices of the entres can be quite pricey - up to $30. On the plus side, the desserts are homemade and the selection extensive. All-in-all, it's a good place to stop for a hot or cold meal that will "hit-the-spot." read more

If you're on your way to Boston going through Connecticut, this is a great little diner stop just off of I-84. Super friendly service (the lady server called us "Hon" and asked my son, "And what would you like, Honey?"). I love diners in Queens, but they can be expensive. Not so here because the prices are really good. Imagine you were back in the 80's. All the diner favorite burgers, sandwiches & breakfast served all day are in their voluminous menu. Add in the nightly dinner specials and you probably won't eat the same thing twice. For dinner, we ordered the mixed grill (chicken, sirloin steak & shrimp), stuffed mushrooms & grilled shrimp and the chicken marsala. We are regular Rein's patrons, but today the line there was out the door so we headed to the Vernon Diner instead. Which also had a line, but it appeared to be moving quickly. I have always considered Vernon to be something of a 'halfway point' in our drives to/from New York and Boston, so by the time we arrive, we are generally starving. And here is where the VD fell down. As one can surmise from previous reviews, I am the father of a very active almost two year-old, and he doesn't like to sit still unless occupied by something fascinating. So when his English muffin with a side of peanut butter didn't arrive for about twenty minutes, along with the salads my wife and I had ordered, he was closer to meltdown than Fukushima Daiichi. Anyway, the food arrived and was fine. I did myself a huge disservice by attempting to distract my son by standing in front of the dessert "rotisserie." The cakes and pies looked so good, I wound up buying a candy bar to satisfy what by the end of the meal had become a nagging sweet tooth. So, all in all, friendly service, decent food, but it just took too long to arrive. And for a place whose tag line is "the restaurant with a family atmosphere," you'd think they'd at least having changing tables. read more

We've been coming here at least once a month for years and have never had a bad meal. Usually, the meal is more than we can eat, so a box goes home with us. We always found the place clean, and the staff was courteous, although stretched thin at mealtime. If you are not in a hurry, go at mealtime. If you want quick in-and-out, go during off hours. The only time it was uncomfortable was when other diners had noisy, unruly kids, which was no fault of the restaurant. The desserts are fantastic. We usually get a piece of cheesecake to take home for later. Prices have gotten a little higher, thanks to the economy, but it's still worth going there when you compare what get at a chain restaurant. We introduced some of our friends to the diner and now travel from the Bristol area to eat there. We highly recommend the Vernon Diner! read more

Solid diner fair, and the salads and main dishes are better than to be expected. Everything seems fresh and the service is usually quite good. It's not firm to table but it's solid American food. Upgraded to 5 stars after I tried their decadent and well-crafted all American classic desserts. The cheesecake and mousse cake were comfortingly delicious -- rich without being heavy. read more

Waffle crispy on the outside soft on the inside. Just not hot. Butter wouldn't melt on it. Home fries with raw bell pepper. What really turned me off on this visit was my waitress, Charlene. First she took forever to take my order. I would also suggest a smile would go a long way. She brought me a sticky mess of a syrup bottle; she had to notice visually but even if she missed that when she picked it up she had to feel it as the handle was dirty as well-shame on her. I have been to this place multiple times. There are times when food doesn't come as expected. But mostly it was good. Yesterday I went for the Irish Benedict. Home fries were fried crispy and nice. Benedict was nice too. I also went for the stuffed french toast supreme. It was very nice. French toast stuffed with cream cheese and topped with fruits and whipped cream. We ordered three meals and literally enjoyed every single one. The burger was insaaaane. The sauce gave it a smokey chipotle flavor that was just delicious. Beware if you have food allergies. I asked repeatedly if one of their cakes had nuts and was assured it did not. Found out three bites into the cake that they were wrong. Definitely had nuts.
