The lone Connecticut location occupies a high-profile anchor position in South Windsor's Evergreen Walk complex. Their space is split into two distinct halves with a big bar on the right and a big dining room on the left. We sat in a dining room booth for today's lunch. And it was a very pleasant lunch experience! Our server, Luke, was pleasant and attentive, and brought us waters right away as we were checking out their deep menu. We saw a nice blend of bar-food appetizers (wings, tenders, nachos, tots, Buffalo Cauliflower, and Bang Bang Broccoli) on the menu. Salads, Bowls, burgers, sandwiches, and main dish entrees fill out the rest of the food choices. I went with their Thai Chicken Salad ($21.95) with marinated chicken, edamame, quinoa, julienned vegetables, mixed greens, cucumbers, red peppers, toasted almonds, scallions, cilantro, and a ginger soy dressing. It was a beautiful dish full of color and crunch, and the chicken breast was moist and quite yummy. My wife chose the Classic Burger ($17.50) with lettuce, tomato, red onions, and American cheese. She had a choice of a side dish among French Fries, onion strings, rice and quinoa mix, broccoli, and green beans. She chose the onion strings which I couldn't resist sampling, and I have to tell you, they were GREAT. They were very "light" and their batter reminded me of Tempura. There was none of the heavy oil-drenched breadcrumbs one often sees with these. They were light and crunchy and excellent. Our $42 lunch yielded leftovers of half the salad, half the burger, and half of those onion strings, so that $42 got stretched pretty far. Everything can be made gluten free, but they were also quick to check for other allergens, and the kitchen and the manager double checked. This was my first time coming to this place and I was really excited because I wanted to go to some of the restaurants within Evergreen walk. We got seated immediately and really liked the ambience and the decorations. The food was even better. We ordered a burger with Parmesan fries that we were splitting between two. The server was nice enough to cut it in half for us and split it evenly into two plates so we didn't have to do it ourselves. Their menu is full of American classics, burgers, nachos, tacos, etc. We decided on the Harvest Bowl and the Baja Fish Tacos with sweet potato fries. Our food arrived pretty quickly. The Harvest Bowl was filled with a nutritious variety of ingredients, there was quinoa, roasted sweet potatoes and brussels sprouts, cranberries, cauliflower, and goat cheese. It was fresh, crunchy, and tasty, while the cranberries offered some unexpected sweetness. The Baja Fish Tacos were a disappointment. These came as a bundle of three on soft shell tacos. These were completely flavorless, the pineapple didn't do anything for these tacos. They were super dry and flat. I did enjoy the sweet potato fries that came as a side. They were generously cut, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Due to the very underwhelming tacos, I'm giving Red Heat Tavern three stars. read more

My wife & I were First Timers to the Red Heat Tavern in Manchester recently. When we entered (mid-afternoon on a Sunday), there was no greeter present. Two individuals were ahead of us, when the greeter did finally show up (a wait of over 5 minutes), she proceeded to process a takeout order that these guys wanted to place. Another waitress walked by us several times and I made eye contact with her, and she finally took the initiative to bring us to a table. During all this, a family had come in behind us, became frustrated with waiting, and left. After taking well over 10 minutes of standing around to get a seat, I was starting to wonder whether eating here was worth it myself, the place was already giving me a vibe of being disorganized. Only half the tables were occupied at that time. So we started off with a skillet cornbread and fried pickles appetizers. Cornbread was very good, we enjoyed it. Portion for the fried pickles was generous, so much so, we couldn't finish it all. I had the fried fish sandwich and my wife went with the southern fried chicken entree. We felt our meals were OK, nothing was really bad, but I can't say anything stood out either. Doubtful if we'd come back again to the Red Heat Tavern. The food, with the exception of the skillet cornbread appetizer, was mediocre. It felt like we were eating at a chain restaurant, like Ruby Tuesday's or Applebee's. Today, I decided to try the fish tacos. Boy was that a huge mistake! The flour tortillas were hard, the fish pieces were very small and mostly all batter.
