Good stuff. We all ordered the small catfish dinner. Salad, coleslaw pinto beans okra. All very good. Glad we give the small, could only eat half. Could have shared and still would have been plenty. I was politely impressed by Vernon's. I am by far a fine dining kind of babe. But the down home chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, and green beans were just what I needed to remind me of grandma. Everything was seasoned to perfection. The steak was crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. The potatoes were perfectly whipped. I even tried the catfish which was nice and flavorful and crisp. Never been here before and only because we don't live in Conroe. But went fishing on lake Conroe and my guide mentioned to us to get some hush puppies on way home to go with the fish we caught. We found info online and called in our order so we could just jump out of truck and pick up. Price was great $2.50 per dozen we order 6 dozen and when we picked up they also gave us some sorta of tomato relish to dip them into and it was really good... Hush puppies were hot and of course made to order...we ordered the spicy ones and they had a nice kick to them. Chicken fried steak was good, really good, as was the homemade white cream gravy, but the star of the meal was the pickled tomato relish with hush puppies they served as a free appetizer. Sooooo yummy! I don't even like seafood and i like their catfish! The fries are fresh cut and so good! They serve you homemade hush puppies, which are amazing!, and tomato relish at the beginning of your meal. I love the fried pickles as an appetizer! They have fried green tomatoes and fried squash as well. I will get the choose three next time and do the pickles, tomatoes & squash! The chicken fried steak is the best I have ever had. It is tender and can be cut with a fork...it does not have gristle and is not chewy. I have had it several times and it has been consistently good. "Old School". Has quickly turned into my favorite restaurant in Conroe. Excellent service and the people are all very nice.

My husband has been going here since he was a kid and has been telling me he wanted me to try this place for years. We finally went for lunch a few weeks ago, and I was not disappointed. For starters, their portions are huge, so come hungry and be prepared to have left overs. They give you free hush puppies as an appetizer, and they are fantastic! We both got our own entrees, as I was looking forward to having left overs to go home with. I got chicken tenders with macaroni and fried ocra. We ordered some onion rings to share, and my husband got a fried fish platter that had catfish and other fish. Everything was hot and delicious. I am a "sides" person and their sides are amazing. I could just order a whole bunch of sides and be happy. The chicken tenders were enough for probably 3 people, so I had plenty to take home. We also got dessert, and it was hard to pick because all their options sounded delicious. We decided on apple pie and ice cream which I would highly recommend. Stopped in there today for lunch with our family that was visiting from South Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan. It's been a while since I've been here. I noticed that they remodeled the remodeling job looks really good. There was a total of 13 of us. The waitress did an outstanding job taking care of us splitting the ticket as we requested two thumbs up. Also, the food was delicious. We all tried a little bit of everything so everybody could enjoy what they liked. We finally got to try this place out after always driving by and seeing the parking lot full of cars just about any time of day and have to say we were glad we did. Nice little family style restaurant, friendly staff. The chicken fried chicken was delicious! I would go back just for that. Locals love Vernon's, but as someone new to town I have a little different take -- it's just ok. I've visited 3-4 times now, so this review is a combination of what I've experienced. 1. You can tell the menu is focused on fried entrees as soon as you walk in the door because of the smell. It can be unpleasant. 2. Vernon's catfish is hit-n-miss -- sometimes it is fantastic, sometimes it is over-cooked & dry. When it's at its best Vernon's catfish is really really good, but seems purely like luck of the draw. 3. I've tried many of their sides & they have all been super salty. Feels like salt is the only spice they know about. 4. Service has been great on each of my visits. I mean, it's decent "home cooking" & I'll go back I'm sure, but IMO Vernon's food really is just mid based on my experiences. read more

I've tried this place a few times and have never been served a truly delicious meal. Everything I've tried has been pretty mediocre.... Last item tried was the shrimp creole. It tasted like canned tomato sauce and lacked any true flavor or seasoning. The sauce was thin and pretty watery. I managed to eat 3-4 bites before I gave up. There's so much hype about this place, but I've yet to find a good satisfying meal after the numerous times I've tried. The service is good, everyone is very friendly. The sweet tea is delicious and the green beans had a nice peppery kick to them. However, the okra was not crispy and was warm to the touch as though it had been sitting. Vernon's Kuntry Katfish is a delicious and friendly place to stop and get good southern cooking. We shared the large fried catfish plate, which comes with delicious hushpuppies and two sides. Even though the food is brought in hot and delicious, it's my opinion that it's too expensive to eat here, especially in today's economy.
