"Old School". Has quickly turned into my favorite restaurant in Conroe. Excellent service and the people are all very nice.

Sooooo yummy! I don't even like seafood and i like their catfish! The fries are fresh cut and so good! They serve you homemade hush puppies, which are amazing!, and tomato relish at the beginning of your meal. I love the fried pickles as an appetizer! They have fried green tomatoes and fried squash as well. I will get the choose three next time and do the pickles, tomatoes & squash! The chicken fried steak is the best I have ever had. It is tender and can be cut with a fork...it does not have gristle and is not chewy. I have had it several times and it has been consistently good. If you like tea their tea is really good too. 10/10 for Vernons every single visit! Service is impeccable and the atmosphere is very relaxing. Don't worry about dressing up. Best. Day. My husband has been going here since he was a kid and has been telling me he wanted me to try this place for years. We finally went for lunch a few weeks ago, and I was not disappointed. For starters, their portions are huge, so come hungry and be prepared to have left overs. They give you free hush puppies as an appetizer, and they are fantastic! We both got our own entrees, as I was looking forward to having left overs to go home with. I got chicken tenders with macaroni and fried ocra. We ordered some onion rings to share, and my husband got a fried fish platter that had catfish and other fish. Everything was hot and delicious. I am a "sides" person and their sides are amazing. I could just order a whole bunch of sides and be happy. The chicken tenders were enough for probably 3 people, so I had plenty to take home. We also got dessert, and it was hard to pick because all their options sounded delicious. We decided on apple pie and ice cream which I would highly recommend. We love the food here so much. The service is always warm and welcoming, and they treat veterans and military families with extra love which we really appreciate. Amazing atmosphere, friendly service, and the food was excellent. The desserts were phenomenal...three words...homemade whipped cream!

We finally got to try this place out after always driving by and seeing the parking lot full of cars just about any time of day and have to say we were glad we did. Stopped in there today for lunch with our family that was visiting from South Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan. It's been a while since I've been here. I noticed that they remodeled the remodeling job looks really good. There was a total of 13 of us. The waitress did an outstanding job taking care of us splitting the ticket as we requested two thumbs up. Also, the food was delicious. We all tried a little bit of everything so everybody could enjoy what they liked. Enjoyed our meal a great deal. We have dined here for years but have refrained from eating here for no other reason than location. Locals love Vernon's, but as someone new to town I have a little different take -- it's just ok. I've visited 3-4 times now, so this review is a combination of what I've experienced. 1. You can tell the menu is focused on fried entrees as soon as you walk in the door because of the smell. It can be unpleasant. 2. Vernon's catfish is hit-n-miss -- sometimes it is fantastic, sometimes it is over-cooked & dry. When it's at its best Vernon's catfish is really really good, but seems purely like luck of the draw. 3. I've tried many of their sides & they have all been super salty. Feels like salt is the only spice they know about. 4. Service has been great on each of my visits. I mean, it's decent "home cooking" & I'll go back I'm sure, but IMO Vernon's food really is just mid based on my experiences. read more

Vernon's Kuntry Katfish is a delicious and friendly place to stop and get good southern cooking. We shared the large fried catfish plate, which comes with delicious hushpuppies and two sides. Vernon is exactly as the name implies. It's a typical country cafe. The catfish is very good, crispy without being overcooked. The sides were just ok. Nothing spectacular but not bad. I've tried this place a few times and have never been served a truly delicious meal. Everything I've tried has been pretty mediocre.... Last item tried was the shrimp creole. It tasted like canned tomato sauce and lacked any true flavor or seasoning. The sauce was thin and pretty watery. I managed to eat 3-4 bites before I gave up. There's so much hype about this place, but I've yet to find a good satisfying meal after the numerous times I've tried. The service is good, everyone is very friendly. The sweet tea is delicious and the green beans had a nice peppery kick to them. However, the okra was not crispy and was warm to the touch as though it had been sitting. Best catfish in the area. My husband and I go eat here quite often. The 3 piece fish plate is what he and I both get and I never finish mine and sometimes he doesn't finish his. That's how big the fish fillets are. You get 2 sides and hush puppies which are so good. I have not have anything there that I have not liked. Everyone is so nice and helpful even if you aren't their table. As soon as you walk in you are greeted. We go early, like around 5 and we usually have about a 5-10 minute wait.
