Gluten free heaven!! I happily travel 1-2 hours to visit. Yes, for me, it is worth it. My favorites are the hand pies, the tarts and the cream puffs. The flavors of hand pies vary, but all are good. Whether sweet or savory the filling will be ensconced in crisp, buttery, flaky, crunchy perfection. I just had a "Rueben style" (thinly sliced brisket layered with pickles, mustard and cheese -I think there was cheese in there) and I would be grateful if I could have it again. I wish I'd bought all of them, but I have no idea if they freeze well (Hahahaha, as though one could show enough self-control to not gobble up ALL of them) Please make that flavor again on a Saturday. Unbelievably good. The banana foster hand pies from a few months back was also a show stopper. I ask after the citrus tarts when I am in Boston. Today there was a blueberry tart and a cherry clafoutis. I'm sure they will be lovely, but the citrus ones make my mouth water every time I reminisce. I thought I would never have a cream puff again courtesy of Celiac. But, no, this dream can still be realized! If the flavor is something exotic like black sesame, don't let that stop you. Jump right in and enjoy the foil of lightly sweetened cream against a crispy choux pastry shell. I should also mention the scones. They are different from the scones I remember from when I still ate gluten. These are much lighter with a delicate crumb. At the price point, I expected the food to be life changing and so I feel compelled to write a review to help others set their expectations. The chocolate chip cookie was fine, but nothing so spectacular as to warrant a whopping $5.50 price tag. Similarly, the outrageously priced $7 Ube brownie did not leave me spellbound. I also wasn't expecting it to have a purple hue (??). Maybe I missed the memo about some special ingredient that causes the tint and justifies the price. The spicy chili biscuit sandwich was good, but really messy/difficult to eat and I felt the volume of jam overpowered the rest of the ingredients. This was my first time trying Verveine Cafe, and I am so happy my boyfriend found this spot. As someone who must be gluten free, I have been looking for a gluten free bakery in town. We were almost turned off by the line outside the building, but we decided to tough out the wind and cold. The line moved pretty quickly, we had to wait about 15-20 minutes. Once we got to the front, I noticed that they had a wide assortment of goodies, and I also noticed the price. We tried 5 things, the funfetti cookie, cherry tart, the peach pastry, the brownie and the chocolate banana bread. My favorites are the brownies cookie and cherry tart. I also liked the bread. I don't have to have the peach pastry again, but it was still good! Each pastry was moist and seemed fresh. My boyfriend who is not gluten free also enjoyed the goodies. Only 2 not positive things we noticed- the prices are a bit high, even though the pastries are good, it was pricey. The were also some fruit flies landing on some of the pastries on displays Hopefully they can try rosemary or another method to keep the fruit flies off the food, especially while it's on display waiting to be purchased. I was also sad they ran out of the cinnamon bun hours before closing, so we will have to visit earlier next time! I recommend this place and plan to return. read more

Took forever to make it out here because their hours honestly make it hard to visit if you're a working gal but glad I finally was able to try this new gluten free bakery! There were so many things that looked fantastic that I wanted to try but had to settle on two! I got the ube brownie, which had a nice consistency and slightly gritty texture to it but was honestly a solid pastry! I also got tried their spicy scone sandwich that I substituted their egg for bacon and it was pretty good but nothing revolutionary. The lady was so nice about switching my eggs out for bacon because I didn't realize the "fluff" meant eggs! The only thing I would say is that gluten free does not mean allergen friendly! There are still nuts and eggs in a lot of their products but I think they are trying to eventually make it so that they have some pastries without! Overall, would go back to try their other mouthwatering pastries and 'za sandwich that's during lunch hours! read more

Would you like a nice dose of hipster attitude, inefficiency, and high prices? This is the place for you! Saturday afternoon, with at least 6 staff "working" and I was refused a warm pastry because, "We don't heat anything on the weekend because it takes too long." Well, when a tiny pastry is priced at $8 I expect 30s in a convection oven. Looking around, the source of the line was obvious. Slow staff. When my compatriot finally received her order of some sort of pretentious toast it was microscopic. This new, all gluten-free Cambridge bakery and cafe has made a big splash in a short time. I finally got over to Central Square to experience the hype first-hand and was not disappointed in the least. The spicy chili biscuit was a perfect breakfast sandwich - fluffy eggs, rich avocado, and a little sweet-heat finish from the jam on a surprisingly soft and airy biscuit compared to what I typically expect of gluten-free breads. The congee was incredibly cozy with beautiful, blended umami flavor from the mushroom, onion, egg and sausage. I couldn't resist trying a bunch of the baked goods, the flavors of which appear to rotate with some frequency. The cookies and brownies were both fantastic and, again, I would never have known they were gluten-free. The brownie was soft, moist and packed with ube flavor and the cookies were just the way I like - a little crunch and crumb on the surface but soft and chewy in the center. Definitely the best GF bakery I've been to and certainly among the best all-around bakeries in Boston, regardless of gluten status. It will be a must-visit spot with GF friends going forward and as a gluten-eater, myself, I'm sure I will be back soon with or without them in tow! read more

Came back to try some pastries. The chai latte was less sweet than I remember but also, I was eating pastries, so it probably was the same level of sweetness lol. I tried the matcha honeycomb cookie, the ube brownie, and some kind of lemon tart. The matcha honeycomb was incredible--crispy, chewy, lovely flavors. Ube brownie was an intriguing concept in flavor but slightly disappointing, because I love chewy brownies and this one had some chew but leaned more cake-like. The lemon tart was appropriately lemony but the crust was more crumbly than I like it, maybe because it's gluten-free. The pastries overall are super good, definitely recommend getting them. read more

Very cute gluten-free bakery near Central Square/MIT! They had unique flavors like black sesame, ube, and miso, and I couldn't tell that the pastries were gluten-free! I really enjoyed the Black Sesame Cream Puff with banana cream and sesame paste filling. The banana cream flavor reminded me of banana pudding. The black sesame latte had good black sesame flavor, but there was also an earthy after taste and I found it overpriced overall. What an awesome place! Everything is GF. Tons of pastries to enjoy. We had the BEC - a milk bun bacon egg and cheese sandwich. The egg was perfectly runny and the sauce had a little kick to it. The first time I went was Saturday morning 10 minutes after they opened and I waited for 2 hours between getting through the line and getting my food. The next time I went midweek, it was a completely different experience, as there were only 4 people in front of us in line. First off if you decide to check out this place on a Saturday be prepared to be waiting in a long line outside, but it does move quickly. Once you get inside this tiny cafe you get see the baker at work from making fresh bread, and other delicious treats. The place is small very cozy the seating is like family style everyone is sitting close to each other, the food is served on this very cool looking high tea time china. However the main reason I came here was for the BLT. Because few days before I was going on my daily walk and stopped by the cafe to see what they served. BLT caught my eye with the heirloom tomatoes baby lettuce, bacon, bacon jam on a Japanese milk bread. I couldn't stop thinking about the sandwich so I went back on a Saturday to order one. The wait wasn't that long, the ordering system could be a little more organized because a lot of patron were standing wondering what order number the restaurant was on since no receipt was given to them. I finally got a chance to sit down and bite into the sandwich the flavors was so vibrant the tomato's was so sweet I really enjoyed every bite that II brought the other half home so my parents so could enjoy the sandwich. I will be returning soon in the future to try the cafe other dishes. read more

As a gluten-free person, I cannot say enough about how great Verveine is. I've had a multitude of their offerings and each time, I've been amazed. It is also inspiring that pastries and breads can taste so good that I've been doing more baking at home. I've stopped by when they originally opened and since then I've returned plenty of times. I'm a big fan of their bread selection such as their pita bread as well as baguettes. I haven't tried any of their grain bowls or sandwiches, but I really enjoy their pastry selection. Their chocolate chip cookie in my opinion is the best in the greater Boston area. Service has always been pleasant and besides their opening, I don't usually wait a terrible amount of time. I like their seating selection, primarily by their windows, as it's aesthetically pleasing for photo ops. It's always buzzing inside and their outdoor seats are great too during the summer. I'm looking forward to seeing what they make next as they continue to offer a variety of goods like pizza rolls and churros. read more

I've visited Verveine Cafe twice now. The first time, the line was very long, which is expected for a new place. I ordered a tuna melt, matcha latte, peanut butter cookie and chocolate chip cookie. The tuna melt and the matcha latte were delicious. However, the peanut butter cookie was too fragile, and the choc chip cookie was too sweet for my taste. On my second visit, I tried the Moni's spicy chili biscuit, which was good but the biscuit fell apart easily. Overall both experiences have been solid. My only concern is that Verveine is a bit overpriced, but I understand they need to over rent/ employees given the location. read more

100% celiac safe establishment! I am so grateful Verveine opened up in central! The queue to get in and order took an hour (so prepare to wait). But, this is a lesson for how strong the demand is for places like this! It is 100% GF/celiac safe but it is not advertised as such to avoid stigma and promote business I believe. In terms of their food, the items I have tried so far are fantastic (baguette, galette, scone). They were delicious and VERY close to Parisian quality! They also offer sandwiches, bowls, etc. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed to see a huge chunk of their baked goods seem to be cookies and muffins. I'm hoping they start making more pastries, tarts, etc., moving forward since they are obviously trying to evoke a French style. Regardless, it's great and I'm so deeply grateful for the food here. It is so MASSIVELY superior to all other GF bakeries nearby! No comparison. It's on a whole other level of deliciousness and authenticity! These chefs are definitely masterful at their craft. Definitely get out here if you can. It's so nice to have a place like this nearby finally! I have seen other people comment that they wish this place would become a chain. I understand that. I would love to see more celiac safe places popping up everywhere. But, I deeply hope this never ever becomes a chain. Quality always tanks when that happens (just look at life alive). Hands down, best place ever!! They need to open up in California. This is a must go to place if you are gluten free. Everything is soo delicious. The ginger, cranberry orange muffin was so tasty and moist with the perfect amount of ginger. I stopped in for lunch with my partner, who is celiac (I am not and thus less familiar with gluten free options). I was very impressed with our lunch. We shared between us a jambon & beurre sandwich, a chocolate chip cookie, a peanut butter cookie, and a biscuit with eggs. All of it was delicious; I'd hardly know the cookies were gluten free at all. The sandwich was perhaps a bit light on the ham, but nonetheless tasty. I was also very impressed by the fact that they use real china for eating in. The staff were friendly and helpful and there is outdoor seating. I once thought I had celiac... so I decided I would cut gluten from my diet. Going on that diet was the hardest thing I could do. I told myself I couldn't do it because baked goods were my love of my life, and I just tend to love things with gluten in them. I got tested turns out I'm not celiac probs just a little on the spectrum of gluten intolerant. But anyways, I retract my statement that I couldn't do go gluten-free because now Verveine exists, and BOY IT IS SOO GOOD. Even if I wasn't gluten-free I would just come here to eat the gluten-free baked goods are everything. What I ordered: Maitake Congee: 4.5/5 It was surprisingly unique and good. I would say if congee had a baby with mushroom risotto, this would be it. A dish that is traditionally Chinese, but with a western twist. It had some parmesan and caramelized onions with it, which surprisingly complemented the dish. The maitake mushrooms in it were also really good and full of flavor. The Thai sausage in the congee and egg made the dish very hearty overall and very filling for one person. The only con: There was like I think a chili oil drizzle, but it just wasn't doing too much (lack of flavor). Ube brownie: Can't even rate... (do yourself a favor and just get it.... it's a must) I tried a sample. And right off the bat, I had to get it. It was soft and moist and everything you want from a brownie. Strawberry and cream choux 5/5 The choux were also very good and couldn't even tell it was gluten free. on the inside the was strawberry jam and a yogurt like cream. The filling was giving me a flash back to those Danimal yogurt cups (ifykyk) but make it elevated. That stuff was delicious. Service: Pretty quick. Got my food in less than 15 minutes. Some outdoor seating as well. The cafe offers the ube brownie edges as samples while you wait in line. Service was friendly and accommodating, as menus are kept at the counter. My take away order took over 12 minutes but it was also the Wednesday before Thanksgiving so I'm sure that's a factor. Visited this cafe last week and ordered the asparagus foccacia which was delicious. This resulted in me going back in 3 different times to try more things. We shared the pepperoni pizza and it was the very best gluten free pizza that we've had in years. (I honestly had to check a few times to make sure it was actually gluten free.) Then we had the chicken bacon ranch pita. The blend of flavors in their amazing pita bread was so so good! We had to buy some of their pita bread to take home. They we had the cream puff with the cherry filling and it was over the top! I wished we lived nearby so we could visit all of the time. In the meantime, can Verveine Cafe consider shipping of their pita bread and pizza crusts and/or any other baked goods that would ship well? Please? read more

I have gluten and dairy allergy. I asked the server which were both, she said the chocolate chip banana bread, mochi inspired caramel banana leaf wrapped, and a savory danish with walnuts. I opted for just the sweets and omg best gluten free and dairy free goods I've ever had. They did have coconut in them. But the servers are very knowledgeable about allergies. Plus you can literally see the staff making the pastries. Be prepared for a line, but worth the wait. read more

Having now seen the crowds calm down during the weekend breakfast rush hour I ventured in to check their offerings. While I only tried the gruyere and cheese hand pie I don't regret my choice.
